Managing Risk – Process Safety
One of the greatest challenges to processing industries is ensuring the maximum
integrity of the finished product.
Failure to control contamination can be catastrophic with the real risk of causing personal harm to the consumer, product scrappage and recall costs. In
addition, adverse publicity can damage brand reputation. Contamination risks exist at most stages of production from goods inwards to end product despatch.
Understanding the risks and installing the correct preventative measures is a vital part of any process.
Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points
To protect themselves, major retailers now ask their suppliers to implement
auditable safety management systems. Most of these systems are based
on HACCP analysis, an international recognised system for reducing risks to
process integrity.
An HACCP system requires that potential hazards are identified and
controlled at specific points in the process to minimise or eliminate safety
hazards in the product.
How Can You Prevent An Incident?
All businesses, irrespective of size, should be taking all reasonable precautions
to ensure that the produce they supply meets safety requirements.
It is the responsibility of manufacturers, big and small, to ensure that the end
product is safe and fit for purpose.
A robust HACCP system involves:
1 Conducting hazard analysis
2 Identifying critical control points
3 Establishing critical limits
4 Establishing monitoring processes
5 Establishing corrective actions
6 Maintaining records
Food Safety Management Systems & Supplier Audits
Major food manufacturers now audit their
suppliers safety management systems,
the basis of which are detailed by EU
Regulation 852/2005 and ISO 22000.
The Global Food Safety Initiative, GFSI has also benchmarked a number of
Food Safety Management Systems Certification programs including SQF, FSA,
BRC, FDA, FSSC 22000.
Contamination Risks
Process contamination risks come in many forms. The main groups being
Biological hazards (such as bacteria and viruses) Chemical hazards (such as
pesticides, additives, and allergens) and Physical hazards (such as metal,
glass and plastics).
Metal Contamination
Metal items are the most common type of contamination in food processing.
They can enter the process through various routes such as contaminated
incoming ingredients and equipment wear.
The most common types of metal contamination are screws, bolts, broken
machine parts, fine particle surface wear, screen wire and metal tags.
If these contaminants are not removed from the process they will become a
major safety hazard for consumers, damage process equipment and damage
the brand or retailer reputation. As a result, manufacturers should have robust
separation and detection equipment in place to prevent this occurring.

Flour Mill
Flour
Bread manufacturers face a high risk of metal contamination being present in flour. As a business they must prove “due diligence” in the control of foreign bodies,
one of which is metal. Our separation and detections systems can be applied at most stages of production. Our systems are designed to allow the permissible amount
of added ferrous oxide* to pass and therefore achieve the correct PPM count.
Liquid chocolate manufacture is an arduous process, it starts by breaking down the cocoa bean at the beginning of the process. This stage poses a contamination risk,
as the rollers break down the cocoa bean they also wear and tiny contamination fragments can enter the product. Our separators are designed to remove the smallest
ferrous particles prior to tanker loading.
ATEX Certification
In addition to high performance products, a major benefit of working with Eclipse
Magnetics is that we are one of the few manufacturers who manufacture and certify
ATEX approved equipment in-house. Most manufacturers have to submit to an external
independent test house, thereby incurring additional cost and extending lead times.
We supply fully certified equipment for use in zones 20, 21, 22 or gas zone 0, 1
and 2 environments. ATEX product certification (or EC Type Examination) is a
check on the design specification of a product in relation to a series of relevant
standards laid out under the directive.
ATEX involves detailed examination, testing and assessment of equipment
intended for use in potentially hazardous areas. The end result is the issue of
an ATEX certificate, confirming and demonstrating that the product is safe to
use (within certain parameters), within potentially explosive atmospheres.
The certification process must be undertaken by an approved organisation
such as Eclipse Magnetics.

Choosing The Right Product For Your Application
At Eclipse Magnetics we pride ourselves on being able to offer a wide range of solutions
to suit various application types and locations. To make sure we provide you with the
optimum solution there are several variables to consider.
Type of Contamination
Primary contamination is usually larger “tramp”
metal items such as nuts, bolts, screws etc., usually
present in the early stages of the process. Secondary
contamination usually refers to finer ferrous particles
including stainless steel which occur later in the
process due to equipment wear and cannot be
detected using metal detectors due to particle size.
The Feed Method
We make sure our separators fit within existing
processes without reducing efficiency. The type of
separator specified will be determined by the feed
method for example gravity feed, pneumatic feed,
conveyor feed or liquid pipeline.
Flow Rates
Usually expressed as cubic metres per hour, this is the
volume of material which passes through the process.
This will influence the size of the separator, design
type, inlets, outlets and position.
Process Cleaning
It is important to consider how the separator will be
cleaned. We offer fully automated cleaning systems
for 24/7 operations or manually cleaned units where
the process allows for line stoppages.
Flow Characteristics
As well as the volume it is equally important to
consider its’ flow characteristics. This could be dryfree
flowing granular or powder substances, pellets,
or viscous solutions. We also offer separators for
materials such as starch or damp products which
exhibit caking or bridging characteristics.
Operating Temperature
Extreme temperatures can affect magnetic
performance. The losses to performance are
usually irreversible. In order to offer the best
solution from our range of magnet materials it is
important to specify the operating temperature
present where the magnet is operational.
Cleaning
The magnetic cores remain in the process chamber until a cleaning signal is given.
Then compressed air is fed into each separator tube forcing the core to the other
end of the unit. The contamination follows the core, which first passes through
the product return chamber, which prevents loss of good product, and into the
cleaning chamber where the collected contamination is deposited. The cleaning
chamber is fitted with a transition piece, which allows a collection container to be
fitted. It is this container that is removed to assess the collected contamination.
Rota-Grid
At A Glance
Protection: Secondary
Feed Type: Gravity
Material Type: NdFeb
Cleaning Type: Manual
Our high intensity magnetic Rota-Grid
separator has been designed specifically to
process difficult products that are prone to
bridging and/or caking.
The unit contains a centrally mounted magnetic ‘rota’
assembly: numerous ‘easy clean’ magnetic rods are
arranged in a ‘wheel’ around and parallel to the axis
of rotation. The number of rods used depends on the
inlet and outlet size.
The assembly rotates, gently agitating the product
being processed. It is this agitation that prevents
blockages occurring. All dry and semi-dry powders
and granular type materials, such as starch etc., can
be processed through the unit. The Rota-Grid can be
supplied to the most stringent of standards, such as
those required in the pharmaceutical industry.
Benefits
• Easy to clean
• Allows difficult products to be screened
• Reduces 'spark' risk
• Removes sub-micron sized contaminants
Cleaning
The contamination follows the core, first through the product return chamber,
which prevents loss of good product, and into the cleaning chamber, where
the collected contamination is deposited. The cleaning chamber is fitted with a
transition piece, which allows a collection container to be fitted. This container is
removed to assess the collected contamination.
Strip Magnet
At A Glance
Protection: Primary
Feed Type: Conveyor
Material Type: NdFeb
Cleaning Type: Manual
Rare Earth strip magnets are versatile and
can be used in various processes. These
units are usually installed above transfer
conveyors and vibratory feeders to attract
'tramp' type contamination and any loose
machinery that has fallen off during the
manufacturing or packaging stages.
The unit consists of two rows of magnetic material
running the full length of the unit. These generate
high intensity magnetic flux fields, which reach
approximately 85mm from the units front face.
Magnetism is only present on one face ensuring that
no surrounding sensitive process machinery is affected.
'Tramp' contamination can be attracted from the
conveyor surface even when trapped underneath the
product e.g. biscuit etc.
Benefits
• Suitable for wash down • High collection capacity
• Easy to clean
• Rare Earth deep magnetic field
• Removes ‘tramp’ sized contaminants
Our high intensity underflow magnet
has been designed to operate in arduous
conditions and where contamination size
is relatively large e.g. nuts, bolts etc. The
unit incorporates two magnetic poles which
generate high intensity magnetic fields.
The unit is secured to the chute by a hinge and toggle
clamp arrangement. The toggle clamps ensure even
pressure is generated around the seal to prevent any
product leakage.
The underflow magnet can be incorporated into any
form of angled pipe or chute section. A common
installation location is raw material inlet points for
products such as grain, rice, corn, bran and animal
Permanent Magnet Head Roller
At A Glance
Protection: Primary
Feed Type: Conveyor
Material Type: NdFeb
Cleaning Type: Automatic
Installed at the discharge end of flat or
troughed belt conveyors, permanent
magnetic head rollers are designed to
remove tramp iron that cannot be removed
by either a plate or overband magnet
because of the conveyed product depth.
For the best possible protection against tramp metals
use permanent magnetic head rollers in conjunction
with plate or overband magnets.
Permanent magnetic head rollers are available in two
magnetic materials: standard strength, which uses
ceramic magnetic material; and high strength, which
uses high intensity Rare Earth magnetic material. The
latter is the most popular due to its high contamination
removal efficiency.
Benefits
• No running costs
• Allows difficult products to be screened
• High volume capacity • Designed for 24 / 7 operation
• Removes large to medium sized contamination
Cleaning
The unit is continuously self cleaning. Contamination enters the roller’s magnetic
field where it is attracted and held firmly on the belt. When it reaches the
underside it passes out of the magnetic field and is discharged separately from the
conveyed product, which continues on its normal trajectory.
All dimensions in mm unless stated
1) Maximum outside diameter of the scanning pipe: ø LW -10 mm
2) The stated detection sensitivities (ball Ø in mm) apply to non-conductive products at the standard operation frequency and refers to the centre of the detection aperture (most
disadvantageous position). Products that show intrinsic conductivity due to moisture content, electrolytes or other conductive contents may reduce the sensitivity as well as variations
of product temperature, environmental effects (mechanical shocks and vibrations, electromagnetic interferences) or the set product angle. The detectable size of metal particles
depends on their nature, shape and position while passing the metal detector.
GFR 4000 Metal Detector
Larger types on request starting from size 150
1) The stated detection sensitivity (ferrous ball Ø in mm) applies for non-conductive products at the standard operation frequency and refers to the centre of the detection aperture (most
disadvantageous position). Products that show intrinsic conductivity due to moisture content, electrolytes or other conductive contents may reduce the sensitivity as well as variations
of product temperature, environmental effects (mechanical shocks and vibrations, electromagnetic pollution) or the set product angle. The detectable size of metal particles depends
on their nature, shape and position while passing the metal detector.
2) The stated throughput rate is based on well pourable granules. The shape of the particles and thus the flow characteristic of the bulk material determine the throughput rate which
can vary. Upstream installed magnet separators may also reduce the throughput rate due to reduction of the cross section.
3) Observe the projection of the mechanical unit: NW 80 +21mm, NW 100 and 120 +32mm.
GFR 5000 Metal Detector
All dimensions in mm unless stated
GFR Dual Metal Detector
The GFR is used to inspect slowly moving bulk
material such as foil flakes, wooden pellets,
etc. as well as large streams in free-fall
pipelines.
It detects all magnetic and non-magnetic
metal contamination (steel, stainless steel,
aluminium) – even when enclosed in the
product. Metal contaminations are rejected
through the “Quick Flap” reject unit with
dual separation flap.
• Detects and separates magnetic and non-magnetic
• metal contamination, even when enclosed in
1) The stated detection sensitivity (ferrous ball Ø in mm) applies for non-conductive products at the standard operation frequency and refers to the centre of the detection aperture (most
disadvantageous position).
LIQUISCAN PL Metal Separator for Pumped Products
The LIQUISCAN PL pipeline metal separator
is designed for inspecting liquid and paste
products.
When metal is detected the valve reject
mechanism removes the contaminant into
a container. A variety of connectors is
available to ensure easy integration in all
types of conventional pipeline systems.
Reliable rejection of metal contaminants is
guaranteed by the use of different types of valve
depending on product characteristics.
The arc valve is ideally suited for all paste products.
The air-operated ball valve is particularly useful in
filling applications which contain coarser material.
Various pipe diameters are available depending on
throughput.
LIQUISCAN PL metal separators are supplied on
a stainless steel frame suitable for table or wall
mounting.
If required they are also available on a mobile,
heightadjustable stand.
