Editorial
He Is being Brought
Down By His Own
Wickedness
St. Kitts and Nevis is in a very bad state. International shame and
embarrassment has been heaped upon us yet again. But it is not for
the want of warnings.
Apart from, but in addition to, the numerous instances of blatant
acts of corruption which have been indulged in since 16 February
2015, we are now under the full glare of the international community,
and all because of the unassuageable greed and lust of members of
that entity known as the SCHEME UNITY government.
Out of Germany, via The United Kingdom, word has reached
us that some of our Caribbean political officials have been ‘in bed’
with businessmen of questionable character and reputation, and the
lot includes a ‘key’ person here in our country.
The news has caused deep worries for most of our people, but,
rather regrettably, there are those who it seems will always chose to
ignore realities, perhaps because it is so painful for them, or maybe
they just could not care less and are only concerned with having
their ‘boys and girls’ wielding the political power of our fair land.
It is quite understandable that, for many, the whole affair has
brought them deep shame and embarrassment, and that is quite
understandable. But for others it is a case of today for today and
let tomorrow take care of itself. They care naught for any other but
themselves.
Many there are who listened and paid attention to the garbage
which was spewed from the platforms of the SCHEME UNITY cabal,
and who chose to swallow the whole lot of it, in many instances they
washed it down with a misleadingly sweet flavour of ‘Kool-Aid’,
thanks also to the self-serving antics of the so-called ‘operation
rescue’.
It is well and truly advisable, dear people, that we should
remember those ploys, for many are now desirous that we should
forget that there were many players involved with misleading our
people into acting against our best interests, and in ways favourable
to those minority elements who are opposed to us, the majority of
the people.
They want us to forget what they did in the run-up to the last
general elections, and ignore what they are now doing while in office,
but only so that they may continue to mamaguy our people while
they mercilessly rip-off the country.
Beyond any shadow of a doubt, it is clear that most of them would
prefer to have this heavy cloud hanging low over the country, without
any regard for how much it damages us, just so long as they are able
to carry on as they have been doing since February of 2015. They
do indeed prefer the darkness to the light.
So many of our people are now wringing their hands in despair,
stricken with grief that they allowed themselves to be taken in by
the evil propaganda of SCHEME UNITY, many sometimes weeping
openly because they ignored the numerous warnings of our beloved
Comrade Leader.
It is truly painful for our people to come to the realisation that
St Kitts and Nevis had something good, very, very good, and we
carelessly threw it away. But, take heart, dear people, all is not yet
lost. We just need to be conscious of those facts and be prepared to
act decisively to save our country.
Quite recently our beloved Deputy Leader,
Comrade Marcella Liburd, had to send out a
reminder that ingratitude is worse than witchcraft.
Comrade Leader Douglas would be fully justified
were he to likewise issue such a reminder to the
nation’s deceiver-in-chief.
A very important point which the people of St.
Kitts and Nevis need to grasp fully, and understand,
is that we are now under the control of some truly
demonic forces, characters who act as though they
are persons of faith, but who in reality are anything
but such.
Always remember that it is the favourite
gimmick of those types to portray themselves as
being the very opposite of what they truly are.
Remember, also, that they always first accuse
others of the evil deeds which they have perpetrated
or intend to carry out.
Whenever they find that their true nature
and character are being exposed they indulge in
all manner of evasive and even more deceptive
behaviours. Such antics include pretending to be
‘of God’, even though we know the opposite to
be the case.
They stage public sessions during which they
‘put on trial’ all those opposed to them, as well
as those who were at one time with them but
subsequently wish to turn away. Individuals are
publicly humiliated, and some shamed into toeing
the line. Thinly veiled threats are levelled at those
who have the strength and courage to resist.
So it was in the early stages of Hitler’s Nazi
Germany, only to steadily worsen as their grip on
power grew tighter and stronger.
It is bad enough when demonic creatures
behave as we have described, but it becomes even
The Labour Spokesman Friday, June 1st 2018
more abominable when they add blasphemy to
their menu of evil, and infinitely worse when the
blasphemy becomes habitual.
All indications are that our nation’s deceiverin-chief
is also a blasphemer extra-ordinary.
Think upon it, dear people. Imagine creatures
practicing all manner of evil, then, when they
seem to have obtained what they wished for, they
indulge in uttering such words as ‘to God be the
glory’!
Such malpractices could potentially bring the
wrath of The Almighty down upon us and our
country. Let us pray, most fervently, that he will
be merciful unto us, indeed as he always has, and
grant us the strength and the courage to remove
this dreadful curse that is now upon us.
It must have been something of a shock when
our people heard the words being uttered ‘what is
done in the dark MUST come into the light’. Many
wondered at the crass nature of it all, and some
asked aloud if that biblical warning was not known
when the cabal held its series of meetings and
other activities, over many years, as they plotted
and planned to remove Dr. Douglas, Labour and
The NRP from office, even as some of them sat
in the cabinet!
But, it is one thing to try to use the word of The
Almighty only when it suits one, while acting and
behaving contrary to his laws in every other way.
Such persons would be well advised to know
that there are more than 100 verses in the holy
scriptures that warn us: BE SURE YOUR SIN
SHALL FIND YOU OUT.

Approached by this media house for a comment, however, that particular lady- who stuck out in her orange among the SKNLP’s red- refused to do such giving the excuse
of her religion by indicating that she is an Adventist.
This media house understands that the woman is not known to be an SKNLP supporter.
Interacting with SKNLP supporters, however, they shared their reasons for taking to the streets that day. Here is what they had to say:
nonsense that is happening, the nepotism in the government! Timothy
Harris cannot operate in a vacuum as if the government or the country
is his and his family so I have to march because he must go! I am not
marching just because I want to march; I am marching because the
international community has decided to weigh in on the nonsense that
has taken place in a bribery scandal and we need to get it right and in
order to get it right , Harris must step down! He go to go!”
Things We Should
Know About Stress
In the words of Fred Rogers, “In times of stress, the best thing
we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts
and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our
answers.”
The kids won’t stop screaming, your boss has been hounding
you because you turned your report in very late, and you owe the
government thousands of dollars for unpaid taxes that you don’t
have. On top of that you’re seriously stressed out.
However, recent research has clearly shown that stress is
actually a normal part of life. Moreover, at times, it serves a very
useful purpose.
In addition, stress can and does motivate us to get that
Promotion at work, or run the last mile of a marathon. But
please keep in mind that if you don’t get a handle on your stress
and it becomes long-term, it can and will seriously interfere with
your job, family life, and health.
Thus, more than half adults say that they fight with friends and
loved ones because of stress, and even more than 75% say they
experience real physical and emotional symptoms from it as well.
Let’s read on and learn why we get stressed out, and how stress
might be affecting our health daily.
We have already accepted that everybody feels stressed from
time to time. But the question that has been raised is what stress
is? How does it affect our health? And what can we do about it?
Moreover, the Health Experts have clearly stated that stress is
how the brain and body respond to any demand, and every type
of demand or stressor, such as exercise, work, school, major life
changes, or traumatic events can and usually are stressful.
In addition, stress can and will affect our health. Thus, it is
very important to pay attention to how we deal with minor and
major stress events so that we know when to seek help.
Below please find a few things we should know about stress:
a. Stress affects everyone: As mentioned earlier, everybody
feels stressed from time to time. Some of us may be able to cope
with stress more effectively or recover from stressful events more
quickly than others.
However, there are many different types of stress; all of which
carry physical and mental health risks.
In addition, numerous studies have shown that a stressor may
be a one time or short term occurrence or it can be an occurrence
that keeps happening over a very long period of time.
Examples and causes of stress include:
Routine stress related to the pressure of work, school, family,
friends and other daily responsibilities.
Stress brought about by a sudden negative change such as
losing a job, divorce or illness.
Traumatic stress experienced in an event like a major accident,
war, assault, or a natural disaster where people may be in danger
of being seriously hurt or killed.
In addition, people who
experience traumatic stress
more often than not experience
temporary symptoms of mental
illness but it is also a fact that
most people cover naturally
soon after.
2. The Health Experts
have also clearly indicated that
not all stress is bad: Simple
research has clearly shown that
stress can and does motivate
people to prepare or perform,
like when they need to take a
test or interview for a new job.
In addition, stress can even
be life-saving in some situation.
The research also shows that in
response to danger, our body
prepares to face a threat or flee
to safety.
Moreover, in these
situations, our pulse quickens,
we breathe faster, our muscles
become tense, and our brain
then uses more oxygen and
also increases activity, with all
functions aimed at survival.
Long-term stress can and do
harm our health:
It is fully believed by all that
health problems can and occur
if the stress response goes on for
too long or becomes chronic,
such as when the source of
the stress is constant or if the
response continues long after
the danger has subsided.
However, with chronic
stress, those very same lifesaving
responses in our
body can and do suppress
immune, digestive, sleep and
reproductive systems, which
may also cause them to stop
working normally.
It is therefore believed that
different people may and do
feel stress in different ways.
For example, some people
experience mainly digestive
symptoms while others may
have headaches, sleeplessness,
sadness, anger or irritability.
In addition, people under
stress are prone to more frequent
and severe viral infections such
as the flu or the common cold.
The Health Experts have
also clearly shared that routine
stress may or could be the
hardest type of stress to notice
at first because the source of
the stress tends to be more
constant than in cases of acute
or traumatic stress, the body
gets no clear signal to return to
normal functioning.
Therefore over time,
continued strain on our body
from routine stress may
contribute to serious health
problems such as heart disease,
high blood pressure, diabetes,
and other illnesses, as well as
The Labour Spokesman Friday, June 1st 2018
mental disorders like depression or anxiety.
There are ways to manage stress: Because of what I went
through just recently and at this moment, to my mind, the effects
of stress tends to build up over time. However, taking practical
steps to manage our stress can help reduce or prevent those effects.
Please find below a few tips that may or could help to cope
with stress:
Recognise the clear signs of your body’s response to stress such
as difficulty sleeping, increased alcohol and other substance use,
being easily angered, feeling depressed and having low energy.
Make it a point to talk to your doctor or your health care
provider. In addition, make sure to get the proper health care for
existing or any new health problems.
Make sure to get regular exercise. By just walking about thirty
(30) minutes per day it can help boost our mood and reduce stress.
Try a relaxing activity then explore stress coping programs
which may incorporate meditation, yoga, tai chi, or other gentle
exercises.
We will also find that for some stress-related conditions, these
approaches are used in addition to some other forms of treatment.
It is necessary to schedule regular times for these and other
forms of treatment: Therefore, we must schedule regular times
for the above and other healthy and relaxing activities.
Set goals and priorities: We definitely have to decide what must
get done and what can wait, and learn to say NO to new tasks if
they are putting us into overload. Therefore, learn what we have
accomplished at the end of the day, and not what we have been
unable to do.
Stay Connected with people who can provide emotional and
other support: But in order to reduce stress, ask for help from
family, friends and religious organisations or the community.
Finally, please consider a Clinical Trial: I am pretty sure that
there are many research facilities in the majority of countries that
are currently studying the causing and effects of psychological
stress, and stress management techniques. I fully believe that
we all can learn more about these studies by visiting any one of
those facilities.
However, if you find yourself overwhelmed by stress ask for
help from your doctor or a health professional. Therefore, make
sure that you seek help right away if you have suicidal thoughts
that are overwhelmed, feel you cannot cope, or are using drugs
or alcohol to cope.
Your doctor or a health professional should be able to provide
a recommendation.
As I close today’s article I leave you with a quote by Steve
Maraboli, Life, the truth, and being free, and a poem about stress.
“You must learn to let go. Release the stress. You were never in
control anyway.” – Steve Maraboli, life, the truth, and being free.
A Man In Pain
Sometimes I feel like giving up,
Because people have already given up on me,
Looking inward for hope,
Eyeing outward for reassurance.
Maybe my eyes cannot see,
I see no one; blackness cloaks my mind,
The light at the end of the tunnel leisurely disappearing,
Expectations quickly ending.
Sometimes I feel like dying,
Life has no other key besides the one no one can see,
My heart is bruised, bleeding to death,
Because no one see’s my worth.
Is it a crime to be born?
To have aspirations, to have your own sentiments,
Is being a child a passport to slavery?
Did I apply to work this job with no pay?
Sometimes I feel like getting naked,
Completely undressing my heart,
So that people know how I feel,
So that they understand that this pain is real.
You look at me and you may envy my life,
I have everything I need except this,
Joy unfriends me at times I need her most,
My mind is in another place; I think I’m lost.

Labour’s Central Basseterre
Constituency Office opens
The Labour Spokesman Friday, June 1st 2018
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 27, 2018 - What has been described as “an impressive ceremony” trumpeted
the official opening Friday of the Central Basseterre Constituency Office of Parliamentary Representative,
Hon. Marcella Liburd.
Following the exquisite rendition of the National Anthem by the popular Dwight Huggins which
raised goose bumps and the awesome prayer by Sis Kurness Bradshaw, the large audience heard
endorsements from Bro. Danyatta and members of the Spanish community, the passionate support of
the new Party Chairman, Dr. Terrence Drew, caretaker for St. Christopher 8 and the Party Leader, the
Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas prior to the official cutting of the ribbon by the 2018 Labour Queen,
Ms. Ovalyn “Sunshine” Whyte of Central Basseterre. The opening of the door revealed a neatly arranged,
warm and beautifully decorated office.
The audience was then treated to solid entertainment by the popular “The Unexpected” in his usual
witty style. Huggins masquerades were at their best, Scratchii Bamma, kool and professional, the
dancers dubbed Labour Warriors and DJ Floyd rocking the place with his sounds. All chaired by Sister
Bev. of Bev’s Kitchen on Fort Street.
Participants were also invited to a variety of food including cook-up, goat water, fish soup as well as
drinks.
“A fantastic evening that brought families together from babies to grandparents. Thanks to all who
contributed in any way to this successful opening,” said two-term Member of Parliament and the
recently elected Deputy Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Hon. Marcella
Liburd.
The Central Basseterre Constituency Office will open from Monday 28th May from 9am - 4pm for
Deputy Political leader
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 28, 2018 - The new chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP)
Dr. Terrance Drew says the Labour Party’s first female Deputy Political Leader, Hon. Marcella Liburd,
has earned the position “through hard work, commitment and dedication over the years.”
“Women of this country must know that we are serious about women in leadership. Women have
equal opportunity in this organization. Marcella Liburd gives great hope to the woman folk not only
of our organization, but our country,” said Dr. Drew.
He pointed out that Ms. Liburd’s election as Deputy Political Leader made history where the delegates
broke the glass ceiling.
“Her mother the late Ann Liburd was an advocate for women rights in this country. She fought for the
equality of women, even Louis Farrakhan had to mention his admiration for Ann. Her work no doubt
has resulted in this historic moment in our party’s history and I dare say in our country,” said Dr.
Drew, the Labour Party’s candidate for St. Christopher 8.
Liburd, a lawyer, is a former Minister of Health, Community and Social Development and Gender
Affairs, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Senator.
Kennyate Tyson: “Your first
duty is to expeditiously heal this
country and bring our people
together”
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 28, 2018 - A second year law student at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant
College (CFBC) has told the leadership of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) that its first
duty on regaining political office in the near future is to “expeditiously heal this country and bring our
people together.”
He declared that young people in St. Kitts and Nevis are not content with substandard that has
been set since the change of government in 2015.
“We will not sit by and allow our country to be dragged into the abyss of retardation and moral
turpitude anymore. We stand ready to take back our country. It was not willingly given, it was stolen!
The drawing of demarcations and divisions among our people cannot proceed. It is an entire reverse
of what we marched and fought against in the 1940s. We the youth are the future of this country and
we do not and we will not support any marginalisation or victimisation of anyone because of their political
difference or any other difference. We, in this country are a happy breed of people, and we do
not deserve this ill-treatment by a government that has a duty to care for us,” said Tyson to the over
800 delegates and invited guests attending the public session of the 86th Annual Conference of the St.
Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP).
Tyson, a former Student Government President at the Cayon High School said “too many families
were affected by victimisation and a country that is divided cannot move forward.”
His second challenge to the Labour Party leadership is that young people need the opportunities
for employment and investment.
“Equal opportunity for all- and not just family or friends- this is what we will vote for in the next
election. We need the opportunity to excel, and express ourselves. We are not less than any other
youth in other countries. We are just as talented. We are just as intelligent and we are just as gifted
and even more. And, from my little experience and knowledge, the Labour Party has proven to be the
party for equal opportunities and we will expect nothing less when this party is returned to government,”
Tyson said.
“We need a government that will keep its word of commitment, transparency and accountability to
its people. It cannot be business as usual when the party returns to government. We will need to set
new standards of excellence in all areas of our country. We need an administration that is free from
corruption. It is time to restore our reputation, as we are not happy with what we have sunken to over
recent times,” said Tyson, who also attended the Washington Archibald High School where he was
an influential student who helped and encouraged the outcasts of society, the remedial students, and
those affiliated with gangs.
He said quality leadership and equal opportunities in a transparent atmosphere must be the new
paradigm.
“This is what young people are demanding and the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has been and
I challenge you to always be the party of choice for our expectations. I challenge the party to be
stronger, safer and better for all of us as we need our country, this other Eden, to return to our merited
and envied office as #1 the Eastern and wider Caribbean, politically, economically and socially,” said
Tyson, who noted:
“Our expectations as young people coincide with the theme and mandate of this party I assure and
commit the efforts and support of the youth of this Federation to the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party as
the party of choice in the upcoming general election.”
Labour Party Will
Seek Technical
Assistance From
Germany On
Anti-Corruption
Legislation Once
Elected To Office
Leader of the Opposition Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says
his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) expects to assume
office following the next general election and will seek Germany’s
assistance in crafting anti-corruption legislation. Dr. Douglas was
at the time speaking on national radio earlier this week.
His statement came on the heels of a meeting between Dr.
Douglas and Germany’s Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, His
Excellency Holger Michael who paid a courtesy call on him last
week.
Briefly, Dr. Douglas said, “We looked at how technical support
will be provided to the future Labour administration because we
will be the administration in the future - and how we will be able
to strengthen our relationship with Germany so that anti-corruption
laws in St. Kitts and Nevis will be strengthened.”
The German ambassador visited St. Kitts on the heels of the
London Bribery Scandal which mentions Prime Minister Timothy
Harris and other Caribbean politicians.
It was transcripts from surveillance recordings by German police
that were handed over to the National Crime Agency (NCA)
in the UK that triggered their own criminal investigation into
allegations of bribery by British tycoon Peter Virdee in which the
names of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr. Harris and other
Caribbean politicians are mentioned.
The National Crime Agency in the UK alleges that Virdee
and his partner conspired to bribe corrupt Caribbean government
officials.
The Antigua and Barbuda minister named in the judgement
has already resigned from the Cabinet, but Prime Minister Harris
has said he is not going anywhere and will ignore the increasing
number of calls for him to vacate his post.
Mr. Michael also paid a courtesy call on the Federation’s Governor
General. He will also make similar calls on Prime Minister
Harris and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Mark Brantley.
“In times like these we need a saviour. And so, I pray that
God would continue blessing us a people and to bless the St.
Kitts-Nevis Labour Party as we ready ourselves for leadership.”
Passport Fallout Court Matter
Continues
By: Spokesman Newsroom
BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 1st June 2018)- On Wednesday this week (30th May) the
third hearing of the diplomatic passport matter involving Opposition Leader and immediate
former Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas (Defendant) versus the Attorney General Vincent
‘Juicy’ Byron Jr. (Claimant) adjourned after arguments regarding Dominican law court handling.
The matter is expected to continue on Friday 15th June.
Byron spoke to reporters after the hearing and highlighted: “The use of a Dominican passport
that we agave asked the court to determine whether he is in violation of our Constitution that
he has by his own act...is under allegiance or obedience to a foreign state…this is section 28
of our Constitution section 31 says that if this is so the member of Parliament should vacate
his seat and we are ask the court to determine whether that is so.”
He added: “Dr. Douglas’ lawyers have asked that they should be able to use somebody who
is verse in the interpretation of Dominica law to assist the court.”
Byron talked about the argument put forward by his legal team saying: “The argument put
forward by my counsel was that a judge of the high court is a judge of the Eastern Caribbean
Supreme Court and therefore appointed by the judicial legal commission and is a judge for
all of the states of the Eastern Caribbean St.Kitts and Nevis and Dominica included and so the
judge can be appointed to Dominica just as he is appointed to St.Kitts and Nevis; if he sits in
Dominica, he would determine what the law of Dominica is and so we are of the view that this
is not necessary. As our lawyer has put it, there is a commune forum where all of the states in
the Eastern Caribbean that have similar judges who interpret the law…and so we think this is
not necessary.”
Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan of Dr. Douglas’ legal team, in speaking to reporters
commented: “Well the issue - as you know-involved whether or not under the circumstances
under which Dr. Douglas got the passport has led to a disqualification under St. Kitts law.
According to him: “Our position is simple, that this is going to require the court to make
a determination of Dominica’s law on a number of issues, included citizenship, statutory
requirement and obligations and oaths for passports ordinary or otherwise and that we cannot
simply rely on the common law or lawyers merely citing statutes made by a sovereign parliament
in St. Kitts and more particularly, as previously the courts in St. Kitts were obliged to take
extraterritorial jurisdiction of laws in the commonwealth which would have included Dominica
but that was repealed and we are concerned about the effects of that repeal.”
Astaphan added: “Does it mean that the judge can no longer merely say that I’m part of the
Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and therefore I can take notice or judicial notice when the
statutory authority that gives him that has been repealed? In the final analysis, it is for the judge
to decide. We are happy with how it went. This is one of those very rare cases where even if
things didn’t go our way we would not be disappointed, because are fully confident with our
understanding of what the Dominica law is; the circumstances under which the passport was
given and, in fact, essentially the Attorney General’s case was promised initially on citizenship.
Which the letter from the Foreign Ministry of Dominica has completely debunked.”
NATIONAL ARCHIVES NOT
ONLY LAUNCHES WEBSITE,
BUT LAUNCHES LASTING
MEMORIES AND ASPECTS
OF HISTORY
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 25, 2018 (SKNIS): The new
website launched by the St. Kitts and Nevis National Archives
can be seen as a launching of lasting memories and aspects of
the Federation’s history utilizing technology, says Governor
General, His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton, GCMG,
CVO, QC, JP.
“I think it is very useful to have all this information and
I think what Mrs. O’Flaherty has done through her tireless
efforts will pay dividends in terms of our students being able
to understand where they’ve come from, where they are and
where they’re going,” said the governor general, speaking at
the launching ceremony on May 25 at Government House.
Sir Tapley especially commended Mrs. O’Flaherty for
her hard work and dedication to the National Archives and
to the website.
“She has taken on the archives and has sought to transform them into something more meaningful than just a stale list of books and documents. She has brought
them to life,” he said.
Also speaking at the event was Prime Minister and Minister responsible for the National Archives, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. He said that the National
Archives plays a critical role in determining the country’s future by safeguarding “our national and collective consciousness, our volition, as well as our power of
agency and perseverance.”
“This is because the National Archives and its stewards protect the nation’s historical record,” said the prime minister. “Today’s launch of the beautiful and
impressively thorough website, www.historicstkitts.kn furthers our journey of national pride and expands the scope, reach, impact and importance of our national
records.”
The prime minister said that it was important to note that this digital technology brings the national records into quick and easy contact with students and teachers,
tourists and prospective visitors, as well as people all around the world who want to trace their ancestry or research the history of the country. “So, I commend those
who have created it for the fine job they have done,” he said.
Prime Minister Harris thanked the Government of Germany, in particular His Excellency Ambassador Holger Wilfried Michael, with the consistency of its support
to the agenda of the National Archives and national heritage. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Port of Spain, Trinidad, contributed generously
to the project. Its support made it possible for the National Archives to purchase a large flatbed scanner to be able to scan material, both for the website and for
preservation purposes.
Equally commended by the prime minister was the Director of the National Archives, Mrs. Victoria O’Flaherty, and her staff for reaching this milestone. Praises
were also given to Genesis Creatives, the local web developer that designed the site.
“This is a good start for us in St. Kitts and Nevis in taking note of our history of recording the elements of our national heritage,” said the prime minister, noting
that it is a task that cannot be left alone in the National Archives.
“There is something each of us can do to preserve records- family records, our school records, our community records- that would make the work of the National
Archives so much easier and our people better off for having preserved their history so that those of the generation now and to come after them would be better
prepared to serve and to build a better St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Persons can visit the new St. Kitts and Nevis National Archives’ website at www.historicstkitts.kn

COMMISSIONER USING
TWITTER TO CONNECT WITH
PEOPLE
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 30, 2018 (RSCNPF): In an effort to ensure that the
public is better aware of the work of the Commissioner of Police, a Twitter account
was created for that office.
Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley mandated the creation of the account
for the Office of the Commissioner with the hope that it enables people to have
a greater appreciation for the operations of the post. It will also be used to share
information about the organisation, its crime-fighting efforts and the community
policing initiative.
“I believe it is important to let the public know what we are doing, as there
are many activities that contribute to our efforts to create safer communities such
as our investigations, training, operations, social activities, etc.,” Commissioner
Queeley explained.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) already makes
good use of social media platforms and shares information daily on its Facebook
page. The Twitter account will complement the page and offer citizens and residents
of the Federation more ways to follow the work of the RSCNPF and its High
Command.
“We get very good feedback through our Facebook page and now, this new
move will allow us to connect with the public in a different way. We will also use
it to help people better understand the structure of the force. We are excited to
hear from persons using these platforms – their views, ideas and suggestions – as
we endeavour to improve the quality of service to the Federation of St. Kitts and
Nevis,” said the Commissioner.
Young Motorcyclist Killed In Wall
12 - PUBLIC INFO -
From the Supervisor of
Elections. Issue 57: History Then
and Now
Mia Mottley made history in Barbados on 24th May 2018 when she achieved a triple: first woman
Prime Minister, first person to ever win that many votes in a constituency, and first political leader
whose party completely swept the polls. Reportedly, Ms Mottley won 4,553 of 5223 of the votes or
87.2% of the votes cast. Even as Ms Mottley was making history, outgoing Prime Minister Stewart
was also making history by being the only incumbent whose party lost every seat, and who went
from “hero to zero”.
The above achievements prompted me to look again at our history, and to highlight some
significant – if not first ever – events in our political history.
If we are to go by the absolute number of votes, then Hon Eugene Hamilton holds that record.
In 2010, he amassed 2,017 votes or 50% of the votes cast (but only won by 31 votes). Dwyer
Astaphan was a consistent performer – he actually got 2,011 of 3,540 votes in the 2000 election
(56.8%). Sir Kennedy Simmonds, Hon Marcella Liburd and Asim Martin would gain honourable
mentions. It must be noted, though, that these feats are easier to achieve in the large constituencies
like #2, #8 and #9.
Margins of victory may comfort those who receive overwhelming mandates; they may alert
marginal winners that they have work to do, or spur the loser into Court challenges. However they
are interpreted, they are unimportant in the scheme of things. The popular vote can be a misleading
statistic and is immaterial in the formation of a government in this first-past-the-post system that
we employ here, where each constituency is an “island” unto itself.
The record of National Hero, Sir Kennedy helps bear out this point. In the 1975 election, he lost
with 39% of the votes cast or 28% of all possible voters. In 1980, he won with 51.4% of the votes
cast (& 41.3% of all constituency voters). In 1984, he won again with a bigger margin – 58.8% &
46.3%, respectively - then declined in 1993 to 49.1% & 30.6% but was still the winner. In 1995
he lost with 46.2% of the votes cast and 32.3% of the constituency voters.
Perhaps it is statistics such as these that undergird the majoritarian two round system of
electioneering. For example, in Australia, a candidate cannot be declared a winner unless a certain
percentage of the vote is achieved. Online research indicates that in Ecuador, a candidate in the
presidential election is declared the winner only if he/she receives 40% of the vote and is 10%
ahead of the nearest rival; and in Argentina, it is (45% plus 10% ahead). Perhaps that will be too
complicated and too expensive for us, and certainly too divisive.
In our history, we have had some close elections too. In 1989, 8 votes separated the candidates
in Nevis 10; in 1993, 10 votes separated the candidates in St Christopher 5; the difference was 12
in 2000 in Nevis 9 and only 4 in 2015 in St Christopher 1.
The flip side of this is that there are garrison constituencies where the temptation is great to move
voters into marginal seats in order to bolster candidate chances. Some of that was discovered recently.
That is why the Registration Officers and indeed the Electoral Office are as vigilant as they are.
Remember our aim is one man, one vote, in the right place and fairness to all.
Eating At Night
Sleeping By Day
Swiftly Alters Key
Blood Proteins
Staying awake all night and sleeping all day for just a
few days can disrupt levels and time of day patterns of
more than 100 proteins in the blood, including those that
influence blood sugar, energy metabolism, and immune
function, according to new University of Colorado Boulder
research published in the journal PNAS this week.
"This tells us that when we experience things like jet lag
or a couple of nights of shift work, we very rapidly alter
our normal physiology in a way that if sustained can be
detrimental to our health," said senior author Kenneth
Wright, director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory,
and Professor in the Department of Integrative
Physiology.
The study is the first to examine how protein levels in
human blood, also known as the plasma proteome, vary
over a 24-hour period and how altered sleep and meal
timing affects them.
It also pinpointed 30 distinct proteins that, regardless of
sleep and meal timing, vary depending upon what internal
circadian time it is.
The findings could open the door for developing new
treatments for night shift workers, who make up about 20
percent of the global workforce and are at higher risk for
diabetes and cancer. It could also enable doctors to precisely
time administration of drugs, vaccines and diagnostic
tests around the circadian clock.
"If we know the proteins that the clock regulates, we can
adjust timing of treatments to be in line with those proteins,"
said lead author Christopher Depner, a postdoctoral
researcher in the Department of Integrative Physiology.
The researchers recruited six healthy male subjects in
their 20s to spend six days at CU's clinical translational
research center, where their meals, sleep, activity and light
exposure were tightly controlled.
On days one and two, the men stuck to a normal schedule.
Then they were gradually transitioned to a simulated
night-shift work pattern, in which they had eight hour
sleep opportunities during the day and stayed up all night,
eating then.

Why Poverty Is Rising Faster In Suburbs
Than In Cities
By Professor Scott W Allard, University of Washington
In the US the geography of poverty is shifting.
According to a May report from the Pew Research Center, since 2000, suburban counties
have experienced sharper increases in poverty than urban or rural counties.
This is consistent with research across the US over the past decade - as well as my own
book, “Places in Need.”
The suburbanization of poverty is one of the most important demographic trends
of the last 50 years. Poverty rates across the suburban landscape have increased by 50
percent since 1990. The number of suburban residents living in high poverty areas has
almost tripled in that time.
These new trends are not just occurring in the wake of the Great Recession. In 1990,
there were nearly as many poor people in the suburbs of the largest 100 US metropolitan
areas as within the cities of those metros, even though poverty rates historically have
been much higher in cities.
Why is poverty rising faster in suburbs than in cities? There are many reasons. Population
growth in suburbs plays a part - the US has become a suburban nation. However,
that’s not the most important factor. My research finds that suburban poverty is growing
three times faster than population size in suburban communities across the country.
As in cities and rural communities, poverty is rising in suburbs because of the changing
nature of the labor market. For those in low-skill jobs, earnings have stayed flat for
the last 40 years. In most suburbs, unemployment rates were twice as high in 2014 as in
1990. Good-paying jobs that don’t require advanced training have started to disappear in
suburbs, just as they did in central cities more than a quarter century ago.
These national employment trends have contributed to rising poverty everywhere, but
the impact has been particularly acute in suburbs, where there are a large percentage of
workers without advanced education or vocational training.
Rising suburban poverty has surprising implications for the safety net. Many suburbs
lack the resources needed to respond to growing poverty. For example, I’ve found the
typical urban county spends nearly 10 times as much on human service programs per
low-income person as the typical suburban county.
What can be done? I have a few suggestions.
First, the US must maintain federal funding of safety net programs like food stamps,
which are effective at reducing poverty. Increasing public funding of human service programs
also will help to support those weathering a spell of unemployment or seeking to
advance in the labor market. Communities must find ways to cultivate a new generation
of local leaders and nonprofit organizations capable of tackling suburban poverty challenges.
Finally, poverty problems continue to rise, albeit at slower rates, in cities and rural
communities. Across geographic boundaries, the nation has a shared interest in the fight
against poverty. If we cannot come together on this issue, we will not be successful in that
fight in any one place - urban, rural or suburban.
is the collective responsibility of Cabinet. The principle
should be employed to resolve an entanglement, alleged or
actual, touching a minister including the Prime Minister.
In Cabinet, the buck stops with the Prime Minister. He
is ultimately answerable for all Cabinet actions, good or
offensive to the common good.
The Prime Minister is named but not charged with a
criminal offense in the gifting matter proceeding through
the British court system. The presumption of innocence
applies but his naming is injurious to citizen, investor and
visitor confidence.
The Prime Minister and his Cabinet team swore an
oath of office tantamount to a promise: “To do the good
that they can do”. The presumption is that nothing will be
said and done to harm the regard of our beloved land as a
nation of laws and wisdom.
With harm done, damage-control is warranted and
Cabinet has the collective responsibility to impose the
same, at all costs. Antigua and Barbuda is the most recent
model. There, an entangled minister fell on his sword
seemingly without hesitation, equivocation or condition.
He is a popular representative; he did not summon supporters
to a display of personal adulation.
Such high regard for country is a benchmark. It effectively
delinks a private matter from governance affairs.
This “high-water mark” applies to my Prime Minister;
more so because he is first among equals.
“Country Above Self ” and collective responsibility can
restore confidence in the avowed good governance agenda
and the country’s good name. In demonstrating such resolve,
Cabinet should ensure certain confidence-building
checks and balances are brought to bear within the promised
timeline.
Measures include, inter alia, term limits for the Office of
Prime Minister, timely availability of government information,
robust but just integrity in public life regulations,
and a public accounts committee with teeth.
Additionally, and as a matter of paramount urgency,
Cabinet should consider and implement a policy that
governs how ministers handle gifts. Not that all investors
and allies are out to entrap ministers. But that gift-offering
begets gift-receiving and a penchant for gift-begging
begets ministerial compromise. Fallouts include white
elephant and unethical projects in which profit supersedes
the health of the environment and humans.
Gift-givers and their projects should be kept at armslength
pending due diligence checks, impact assessments,
and other “common good” advice provided by the competent
functionaries and ordinary people.

WORLD
ENVIRONMENT DAY
2018 TO FOCUS ON
REDUCING THE USE
OF
PLASTIC
The Labour Spokesman Friday, June 1st 2018
FREE TRAINING AVAILABLE FOR
PERSONS HOSTING CAMPS THIS
SUMMER
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 31, 2018 (SKNIS): Plastic pollution is
one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, therefore,
St. Kitts and Nevis will play its part and join the rest of the world
on Tuesday, June 05, to observe World Environment Day under the
theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
“This year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
theme for World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
“Plastics have become one of the earth’s most threatening materials
and have been negatively impacting earth’s resources for a number
of years. With this growing calamity, this is a call to action for all of
us to come together and play our part in order to change the impact
plastics are having on our natural environment,” said Derionne
Edmeade, Environment Education Officer in the Department of
Environment, adding that this year’s theme “encourages us to reduce
our dependency on plastics as the catastrophic environmental cost
of this convenience is now becoming even clearer.”
He added that the Department of Environment plays a role in
ensuring that plastic bottles are removed from various places through
its yearly coastal clean-up activity.
“Every year during the coastal cleanup activity organized by
the Department of Environment, plastic bottles have been the most
identified item collected from our coastlines. In 2017, two thousand,
one hundred and thirty two (2132) plastic bottles were collected from
two of our beaches during our annual coastal cleanup activity,” he
said. “This will not only have a negative impact on our physical
environment, but will also impact our tourism product. Plastics have
now become a waste nightmare and it is time for governments all over
the world to join the fight against plastic pollution that is significantly
contributing to the degradation of our natural environment. This
number will only continue to grow if we do not change our behavior
towards pollution and adopt ways to protect our physical environment
and our natural resources.”
The environment education officer said that human beings must
do more to reduce their harmful impacts on the environment and that
people living on a small island like St. Kitts and Nevis need to pay
special attention to reducing their use of plastics.
“To beat plastic pollution, the Department of Environment is
encouraging everyone to step up and think deeply about not only
how we can help to reduce our plastic waste, but also how we can
change our consumption behavior,” said the environment education
officer. “We must rethink our approach to designing, producing
and using plastic products. A great way to reduce plastic waste is to
use reusable shopping bags, use reusable bottles and containers to
help minimize the amount of plastics entering the waste stream. As
consumers, we must not only be actors but drivers for the behavioural
change that must happen upstream. We must act as both consumers
and informed citizens to drive the message to all sectors as it
relates to our use and dependency on plastic. Many countries have
already taken important steps to place bans on plastics as a mean of
demonstrating government’s commitment to reducing the negative
impact of plastics.”
The Department uses the month of June annually to promote
environmental awareness in schools, and among the general
public. One of the department’s annual events is an exhibition in
Independence Square highlighting the work of the Department. This
year an outreach focus for the month of June will be on the timely
international theme of reducing the global dependency on plastics. It’s
a theme that resonates in the Federation and calls for persons to take
a serious look at how much plastics play a part in our lives and the
impact its disposal is having on the environment. The Department’s
actions for this June and beyond will be centered around minimizing
the Federation’s dependency on plastics.
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 31, 2018 (SKNIS): The Department of Youth Empowerment in St. Kitts
is offering free training in leadership, first aid, effective communication, goal setting and other life skills
development techniques to individuals who are organizing camps and other activities for young people
over the summer.
The first session begins on Saturday, June 09, and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the dining
room at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium. Acting Director of Youth, Pierre Liburd, noted that there
will be four training sessions in all, every Saturday, as it is part of the development workshops that the
department offers to dorm leaders and volunteers for its annual Summer Residential Camp.
“We are inviting all persons, especially young people who are interested and are ... connected to
any camp that will be happening in St. Kitts or in Nevis over the summer,” Mr. Liburd said. “The idea
here is to develop their capacity to deliver effective interaction, mentorship, governance of a youthfocussed
camp.”
To participate in the training, interested individuals will have to register with the Department of Youth
Empowerment located on the top floor of The Cable Building on Cayon Street. A total of fifty persons will
be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. This makes early registration extremely important.
The acting youth director noted that the community will be well served as the young people become
empowered to build partnerships in nation building.
“They (the participants) are expected to take this training not just to employ during the week of the
Summer Residential Camp but will also take that training and go into their communities, serve different
agencies and develop their own [programmes] but use the skills that they have to serve the interest of
young people,” he said.
The trainees will also be called upon from time to time to assist the Department of Youth Empowerment
as it continues to roll out programmes to benefit the nation’s youth population.

VIRDEE. VERDICTS
AND FAMALAAYYY!!!
If I were a member in Timothy Harris’s
cabinet and he said of me and all the others
that not one of us could hold a candle of
correction to him, and in truth and in fact
not of us could, I would feel more than a
little embarrassed.
I wonder if people have grasped what
the prime minister said of his cabinet.
It means that every single one of them,
from captain to cook, is involved in some
dishonest activity and dare not try to
chastise him for doing wrong.
In fact, he said that none of them
“dare”. They can’t do him anything. They
are just like him. Tainted. Sullied. Would
corrupt be a more appropriate word?
Heaven help us.
And that is why those who were “dry
cleaning their suits” had to put everything
on hold. Perhaps even hang up the suit
because they know the person that they
are dealing with.
It is no way that Timothy would have
allowed these plotters to achieve their
objective just so.
No way!
Timothy told the entire world what he
would do if they tried to remove him.
He would expose them.
Every single one of them.
All their activities that contradict good
governance and integrity in public office
would have been made public.
He would have spared none.
What a leader!
What a prime minister!
And the NGO’s who had the most
to say when Douglas was in power are
shamed once again into silence.
That is why the journalists did not ask
what people tuned in to hear. Most of
them emerged during Douglas’ tenure in
office. Their function was to ask Douglas
the tough questions to make him look
bad and make Timothy, the “perceived”
golden child look good.
So they were not prepared to deal with
anything that is not in the script.
That is why the only journalist of
international acclaim had to be re-assigned.
And they seem to be afraid of the
ranting and raving and the screaming and
the prancing.
And having their supporters call into
the talk shows to intimate and sometimes
By: FAIR SHARE FOR ALL
make the claim that all politicians take
bribes is not an answer. All it does is to
admit that the London Court might be
onto something.
For just as how Timothy was prepared
to expose any one of his cabinet members
who dared to pursue to unseat him, so too,
if Timothy and the rest of Team Unity
had one iota, one shred of evidence to
suggest that Douglas or any member of
the former administration had taken a
bribe, the world would have known. \
But three years later and after many
costly investigations, the only “ah ha”
moment was the discovery of a diplomatic
passport from Dominica.
So with nothing else, they have put
all their eggs in the diplomatic passport
basket to see if this could justify all the
accusations of corruption that were made
in the 2015 campaign.
If Team Unity had anything else, they
would not have been wasting their time
on a diplomatic passport.
But they had come up empty so many
times before, and with pressure mounting
from people with deep pockets who
were convinced that Douglas would be
dragged off to jail the day after Team
Unity had been sworn in, a diplomatic
passport is their smoking gun.
Heaven help us!
With crime needing some real
attention, especially after Timothy and
Team Unity boasted on the campaign
trail that they had all the answers, the
government would be well-advised to
spend our scarce financial resources on
constructive initiatives.
Timothy Harris has not disappointed
those of us who know him well.
Everywhere he goes, when food or
something to give away are present, he
is bound to behave like a hog and mud,
and in the process, embarrass himself and
the federation.
So stuttering is not an option for us.
We have to rid the federation of this huge
embarrassment. One way to ensure that
is to welcome back to the fold all who
went away from us in 2015.
Yes. Welcome them back with open
arms.
