of the most important herbals of the 16th century. He incorporated much of Dioscorides’<br />
earlier work, as well as “new” plants he grew himself (corn, pumpkin, chili peppers, &<br />
marigolds). Unlike previous herbals, he insisted on lifelike illustrations (by Clement<br />
Bussy) for each plant rather than the highly stylized <strong>and</strong> inaccurate renderings found in<br />
earlier works. Fuchs is recognized as one of the fathers of German science & botany,<br />

Ag. Society of Japan, 1895, 2 vols., 223 pp., cloth. A very rare Japanese herbal with<br />
the translated title reading “Useful Plants of Japan”. This work took a number of years<br />
to produce <strong>and</strong> includes more than one thous<strong>and</strong> colored woodcuts. Four-to-a-page<br />
colored illustrations captioned in western style with Latin names of genus <strong>and</strong> species,<br />
<strong>and</strong> transliterated Japanese names. The illustrations are woodblock color-printing with<br />
some added h<strong>and</strong> coloring. From a different publisher, four years after the present<br />
work, an English translation was published titled “Useful Plants of Japan Described<br />
<strong>and</strong> Illustrated”. It was a fully indexed text to the above work <strong>and</strong> translation of the<br />
several Japanese volumes of text thus making the original work easy to use. Two works<br />
together as one. Provenance: Sold by R. Kishimoto, Osaka, Japan booksellers-plate;<br />
to the noted Kenneth K. Mackenzie; The Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.<br />
