in the community armstrong, children have a higher cure capacity as they ignore odds and percentages. that is how I felt; I simply wanted to get back to doing what I was doing prior to my diagnosis.” his oncologist, Dr. David malkin, wasted no time. he was admitted that same night to begin treatment. the initial protocol consisted of nine months of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation. “each chemotherapy session – conducted over a three-night stay as an inpatient – was very gruesome for me, but I never complained,” recalls mizzoni. “after my first chemotherapy session my hair began to fall out rapidly. I even remember displaying a trick on my friends as I pulled a chunk of my hair out and it lay in the palm of my hand. But that was no problem for me as one of my idols at the time was shaven-headed toronto raptors superstar Vince Carter.” after returning home from each session, he would experience severe nausea on a daily basis. In times of complete solitude, he would ask “why me?”, feeling like he was alone in his battle. he began to actually feel more at home at SickKids, where he was among many young children undergoing the same treatments. “For several years of my life SickKids became my second home, and to this day I feel the same way,” says mizzoni. Finally, after an excruciating nine months of chemotherapy followed by five weeks of radiation at Princess margaret hospital, he and his family received their most joyous news yet: andrew was cancer free and in 26 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011 remission. he looked forward to having his hair grow back and getting to be an average kid again. But unfortunately this state of bliss didn’t last long, as the cancer returned once again, this time even more aggressive. andrew was in a fight for his life as he underwent a more extreme dosage of chemotherapy. he underwent four months of daily chemo, followed by an additional four months of treatment and several biopsies. Finally, his medical staff was faced with their toughest decision yet. they decided to perform a radical surgical procedure to remove the tumour along with his left eye. ‘‘ for several years of my life, SickKids hospital became my second home, and to this day, i feel the same way. most people would have reacted to this ’’ with horror, but not mizzoni. “this was great news for me as it meant the end of a long battle,” he recalls. this type of surgery had been conducted only once in the history of SickKids hospital, whose roots date back to 1875. mizzoni’s surgery, conducted by world renowned Dr. Jeffrey J. hurwitz, was a success. two days later, he walked out of hospital, hoping never to return. mizzoni’s recovery was fuelled by his passion for sports, and he was soon playing basketball and competitive hockey. But he now had a new focus in life and that was to give back to the hospital that saved his life. that was how he and his family launched the andrew mizzoni Cancer research Fund in 2001, with their first charity event, a dinner dance, held on October 12 that year. “we received such great support from our community that we decided to carry on the tradition. through the years we have organized dinner dance galas and charity golf classics, all with the focus of giving back in mind,” says mizzoni. his efforts have earned widespread recognition and he has received countless awards for his philanthropy. “the have a heart for SickKids radiothon featured my story on three of toronto's top radio stations and set a north american record for funds raised,” recalls mizzoni. he was also named Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year in 2005 and was recognized by Today's Parent magazine as one of the top five individuals in the country who are making a difference in the lives of Canadian children. to date, the andrew mizzoni Cancer research Fund has raised over $400,000 for pediatric cancer research at SickKids hospital. this year marks the 10th anniversary of the family’s fundraising efforts, with the andrew mizzoni Charity golf Classic to be held on June 21 at Cardinal golf Club. Last summer, mizzoni added another prestigious accomplishment to his long list. at the age of 18, he received his real estate license, making him one of the youngest worldwide to do so. he is currently thriving as a sales representative with homelife metropark realty, and has intertwined his real estate career with his charity efforts to support SickKids hospital. he dedicates a percentage of his commissions to support cancer research at the hospital for Sick Children. “my motto of ‘every Deal makes a Difference’ is one I plan to live up to, and becoming an inspiration to the world is a passion I have set out to fulfill,” says mizzoni. to date, mizzoni has been cancer free for over eight years. “Looking back, I would not have it any other way,” he says. “Cancer has bettered me as a person and by beating cancer I now feel indestructible, because my life’s toughest battle will eternally be behind me. in the community Straight from the ’art Roma event raises $30K for SickKids FIne art, world class wines and spectacular cheese were at the heart of a unique charity event last month that raised more than $30,000 for SickKids hospital. the roma Cares 2011 benefit, organized by employees of roma moulding at the company’s head office in woodbridge, saw staff, friends and family enjoy an evening sipping on fine wine and nibbling on hors d’oeuvre, cheese and other goodies as they took in the wonderful art on display. entertainment at the event included live music from the students at Vaughan music academy, a silent auction, live mural painting and moroccan belly dancers. Special guests included Vaughan mayor maurizio Bevilacqua, local councillor rosanna DeFrancesca and miss teen Ontario-world 2011, Lauren howe. the complete proceeds from the event are being presented to SickKids. When it comes to the fashion world, Spring always goes hand in hand with chic and colourful styles. For students at Villanova, the bright styles were put into consideration and some future designers and fashionistas decided to showcase some of these pieces in the Ladies who Lunch - Third Annual Fashion Show. Models strutted the runway with the latest designs from Maxi Boutique, Mijaneaux, hugo Boss, Tuxedo Royale, Ines Di Santo, Shahani Couture and Michael Luisi. guests were also treated to live entertainment featuring Juno Award winner Robert Michaels. All proceeds collected go to support the New Villanova Centre for the Performing Arts.
