Dear Donors, Volunteers and Friends of Princess Margaret Hospital, 

I feel most fortunate to write this letter for the Annual Report. This exercise gives 

me an opportunity to pause and consider the work being done at Princess Margaret 

Hospital and to reflect on the Hospital’s impact, and that of its fine staff, on so 

many thousands of people – in our community, across Canada and even throughout 

the world – who are living with cancer. 

Of the many institutions with which I have been involved, this hospital is one of 

the most important to me. Having experienced cancer in my own family I know 

the terrible toll the disease has on individuals, family members and friends. 

At the same time, during my 12 year association with the Hospital, I have seen 

much evidence of the truly special environment present at Princess Margaret 

Hospital, and the incredible impact of the research being conducted there. 

(On that topic, please see “The Year in Research” on pages six and seven of this 

report, to learn about a number of very significant breakthroughs that took place 

at our Hospital during the past year.) 

Perhaps the most special characteristic of Princess Margaret Hospital is the institution’s ability to attract truly committed 

individuals to partner with our doctors, nurses, staff, researchers and students to bring the vision “To Conquer Cancer” to 

life, every day. 

Included among these are the members of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. As a group they 

tirelessly advance the mission and goals of the Foundation, while acting as community ambassadors for the hospital, and all 

the while espousing our institutional values. They are a true asset to our work: The growing successes realized by the 

Foundation can be credited in significant measure to their efforts and attention. 

Paul Alofs, President and CEO of the Foundation, also warrants a special acknowledgement for the energy, insight and vision 

that he has brought to his work in the Foundation. During his first year at the helm he has already made an indelible imprint 

upon its future direction and that, consequently, of the Hospital. The establishment of the Institute for Breast Cancer Research 

was an especially notable development, largely brought to pass by his volition and foresight. 

I am proud to tell you that during the year April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2004, the period on which we are reporting, you 

were one of over 230,000 generous and committed contributors to The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. This figure 

continues to grow each year, as does my esteem for each of you and the accomplishments you bring about. 

Thank you for being our partner: Someone who has invested personally in fighting cancer by supporting Princess Margaret 

Hospital and its critically important work. Without you, our Hospital could not remain the world-renowned institution it is.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CEO 

Dear Donors, Stakeholders and Friends, 

To Conquer Cancer .... I can't think of a more compelling vision statement for an 

organization or a more important call to action. My first year as President and CEO 

of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation has been guided in many aspects by this 

most powerful vision. 

Just about everyone who volunteers, donates, or gives in some way to Princess Margaret 

Hospital has a story. Each one is different. Some stories are heart-wrenching, while 

some are hopeful. Some stories are inspirational and some have yet to unfold. Whatever 

motivated you to support Princess Margaret Hospital -- whatever your story is or may be -- 

I can tell you that your contribution is greatly appreciated. 

Due to the extraordinary support of donors, volunteers and friends like you, the period 

from April 2003 to March 2004 reflects another very successful year for the Foundation 

in all areas of endeavour: fundraising and donor relations, investment management and 

fund granting. This is in no small part thanks to the very strong foundation and excellent 

work of my predecessor, Neville Kirchmann, and our Board of Directors. 

Our Board members are volunteers who contribute very significantly of their time and resources to ensure that The Princess Margaret 

Hospital Foundation lives up to the high expectations of the community we serve. In particular, I would like to recognize and thank 

our Board Chair, Mr. Lionel Robins, for his leadership and support during this past year. Lionel embodies all the best qualities a 

volunteer leader should possess. 

I wish to thank many other volunteers who have contributed to our continued success. So too, the staff of the Foundation should be 

acknowledged for another strong annual performance. They represent a level of passion, professionalism and sensitivity that truly sets 

them apart. 

This past fiscal year – April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2004 – has included many highlights. First, it's my pleasure to recognize and thank 

the incredible walkers, leaders and volunteers who raised an outstanding $12.6 million in gross revenue for breast cancer research and 

care via the 2003 Weekend to End Breast Cancer. This was a truly hallmark event, one that has entered the fundraising record book as 

Canada's most successful first-time fundraiser. What a fine example of what dedicated and passionate individuals can accomplish when 

united by a vision. 

Second, due in part to the phenomenal success of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, the hospital announced the establishment of 

the Institute for Breast Cancer Research. Launched with $60 million in committed funds, the Institute will develop $125 million in total 

funding over the next five years. We are extremely fortunate to have one of Canada’s most prolific scientists, Dr. Tak Mak, as the 

Institute’s Director. This development represents an exciting new step in the Hospital’s commitment to conquering breast cancer. 

Third, the Foundation’s two lotteries have continued to provide very significant levels of funding for core cancer research. The spring 

2004 program incorporated several significant changes that made it more attractive to our community of ticket buyers, yielding an 

increased contribution for cancer research. 

Our cause - To Conquer Cancer - calls for bold initiatives, focused action and coordinated commitment by everyone. The upcoming 

year will see us work in new and exciting ways so that, at some point in the not-too-distant future, we can all join together to say, 

"We have conquered cancer!" Thank you for your continued role in us one day realizing this vision.

THE INSTITUTE FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH: 

A LEAP FORWARD IN CONQUERING CANCER 

The Institute for Breast Cancer Research (IBCR) - the 

only one of its kind in Canada - was officially launched 

on June 2, 2004, representing an important milestone for 

Princess Margaret Hospital. This most recent initiative 

against breast cancer moves Princess Margaret Hospital 

closer toward its goals of achieving global impact and 

remaining a world leader in conquering cancer. 

The fundamental mission of the Institute is finding a cure 

for breast cancer. And to do that, one of Canada’s most 

prolific scientists Dr. Tak Mak - Senior Scientist with 

Princess Margaret’s research arm, the Ontario Cancer 

Institute; world-renowned researcher and Member of the 

Order of Canada - has been named as its Director. “I am 

honoured to lead this important new research institute 

and focus my research on the specific disease of breast 

cancer,” said Dr. Mak, “This Institute brings together the 

talent and resources that will be dedicated towards finding 

a cure,” he added. 

Joining the team are four bright scientists – Norman Boyd, 

MD, D.Sc., FRCPC, Pamela Sumiko Ohashi, PhD, Lea 

Harrington, PhD, and Wen-Chen Yeh, PhD, MD, each of 

whom have already worked with Dr. Mak on various 

research initiatives. 

In an effort to establish a stellar, top-notch team, the 

IBCR will recruit scientists and clinicians dedicated to 

breakthroughs in breast cancer research. The Institute 

aspires to develop a world-leading program in this area 

and eventually contribute to unlocking the mystery of the 

disease’s elusive cure. “This is an exciting time to be a 

cancer researcher. Basic research is beginning to pay off 

and I believe we are entering a new age of discovery,” 

explained Dr. Mak. 

Launched with $60 million in committed funds, the 

Institute will develop $125 million in total funding. 

Inspired by the efforts of nearly 4,000 walkers in the 

inaugural Weekend to End Breast Cancer held in September 

2003, a substantial $5 million of the net proceeds raised 

during the annual walk will be invested in the IBCR each 

year. Individuals, foundations, corporations and government 

sources will be approached in order to raise the additional 

$65 million needed over the next five years. 

The IBCR will have world renowned scientist Dr. Tak Mak (centre) as its 

lauded Director. He is joined in the Institute by Drs. Wen-Chen Yeh, Lea 

Harrington, Norman Boyd and Pamela Sumiko Ohashi.

WALK ACTUALIZES RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS FOR BREAST CANCER 

From September 19-21, 2003, 3,974 walkers united for a 

two-day, 60-kilometre journey of hope in the inaugural 

Weekend to End Breast Cancer (WEBC), benefiting breast 

cancer research and care at Princess Margaret Hospital. 

Participants honoured lives lost, celebrated survivors and 

demonstrated their commitment to end breast cancer. With 

courage, passion and the desire to make a significant impact in 

their community, participants raised an astounding net figure 

of $8.5 million - a Canadian best for a first time event! 

“Witnessing a community of virtual strangers support each 

other in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and commit to 

finding a cure to this devastating disease is both inspiring and 

very encouraging,” offered Paula Siegel a WEBC Walker and 

breast cancer survivor. 

Proceeds of the walk have been directed toward three 

innovative program areas at Princess Margaret Hospital: 

survivorship care; leading edge cancer research via the newly 

formed Institute for Breast Cancer Research; and enhancing 

the Hospital’s world class breast cancer clinic. 

The Princess Margaret Hospital’s second annual Weekend to 

SUPPORTING UNIQUE SCIENCE: 

The Wharton Fund for Translational Cancer Research 

Translational research is a unique kind 

of investigation. It brings together two 

very distinct types of science, basic and 

clinical, to create new treatments for 

cancer. In other words, this research 

aims to translate innovations at the 

most basic levels of science into 

breakthrough therapies for patients. 

And luckily for some of our patients, 

the Translational Research Program at 

Princess Margaret Hospital is unique in 

Canada and only one of three programs 

throughout North America for head 

and neck cancers. 

Such an important research initiative 

requires a unique and visionary 


fundraising strategy. It was with this in 

mind, that Robert Wharton, along with 

his family, established The Wharton 

Fund for Translational Cancer Research 

with a generous gift of $1.2 million. 

Mr. Wharton had already made very 

substantial gifts to previously establish 

the Wharton Centre for Head and 

Neck Cancer at Princess Margaret 

Hospital. Yet, because he understood 

the vast potential of translational 

research for all different types of 

cancers, he made this additional very 

generous gift to that area. 

In order to meet the total goal of $2.4 

million for the fund however, The 

Hundreds of committed walkers stream toward the finish of their journey 

against breast cancer during the 2003 60-km Weekend. 

End Breast Cancer will take place on September 10-12, 2004 

and is expected to be another extremely successful event. In 

addition to its swell of support in Toronto, the WEBC has 

now expanded to become a national effort in the fight against 

breast cancer, with upcoming walks scheduled in Vancouver, 

Calgary and Montreal. 

Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation 

agreed to raise the remaining $1.2 million. 

The fundraising team is well along in 

that goal, but further fundraising efforts 

for the fund are needed, to reach the 

goal that Mr. Wharton set for us. 

From meaningful but modest 

contributions of a few hundred dollars 

to those of a few thousand, many 

donors are supporting this unique 

initiative at Princess Margaret Hospital.

that “every little bit counts.”

LOTTERIES PRODUCE WINNERS...IN CANCER DISCOVERY 

In eight years, featuring up to two annual lotteries – the Home and the Cash and Cars – 

The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation has raised over $120 million (net) to support 

cancer research. Proceeds have been invested in innovative technology and in funding 

many of the world’s brightest scientists and doctors who work within the Ontario Cancer 

Institute at PMH, to revolutionize cancer research, care and treatment. 

“One of the advantages of lottery funding is that we can use it strategically,” says Dr. Christopher 

Paige, Vice-President of Research for University Health Network. “It represents significant 

funding that we can invest in longer range initiatives with large pay-offs.” 

Piloting progress in cancer research, over 800 researchers at the Ontario Cancer Institute 

produce many new breakthroughs, including a host of those considered world and cancer 

firsts. 

We are proud to now share highlights of some of our research accomplishments, made 

possible by lottery support. 

Cancer Genomics: Treatments As Unique As Each Patient 

Genomics-based research, a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer, permits scientists 

to study thousands of genes present in a single cancer cell all at once. 

Cited as one of the top three academic microarray labs in the world, the PMH/University 

Health Network Microarray Centre produces various types of cDNA microarrays or glass 

slides with tens of thousands (up to 32,000 in fact!) of DNA fragments on each, for study. 

Using such incredible tools, researchers can compare diseased tissues to healthy samples to 

identify differences in the genetic make-up of various cancers, and thus advance understanding 

of why some drugs work better for only certain patients. Our aim is to eventually develop 

more customized drug treatments, tailored to be effective for individual cases, given their 

genetic make-up. 

“This new technology dramatically improves our understanding of cancer genes,” says Dr. 

Woodgett, Head, OCI’s Experimental Therapeutics Division. “With it, researchers have 

been able to pinpoint new genes associated with many types of cancers.”

Information Technology: Developing New Frontiers of Discovery 

Computers play an important role in everyday life. At Princess Margaret Hospital and the Ontario Cancer Institute, they are 

helping us to search for a cure for cancer. 

The OCI Research Informatics team has developed a leading-edge suite of databases and web-based tools known as CORE: 

Collaborative On-line Research Environment. This technology includes one particularly significant component, the 

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), a secure mega-database that combines bountiful information from many different 

sources in one organized system. “Our secure warehouse incorporates and organizes information from Health Records, 

Finance, Patient Records, Oncology, Pathology, Radiation, Surgery, Emergency, Nursing and many other areas,” says Ozgur 

Huner, Director of the Research Informatics Team. 

By investing in such new tools as integrated database infrastructure, we can empower researchers to move forward faster. 

Their current ability to analyze multiple forms of patient data effectively and comprehensively translates into improved 

capability to predict what treatments will work for individual patients. In this way, patients can be spared possible negative 

side effects from treatments not destined to work effectively for them personally.

LOTTERIES PRODUCE WINNERS (continued) 

In addition to the microarray and informatics programs, lottery revenues have impacted other innovative 

research programs, including: 

• The PMH Image-Guided Therapy Laboratory is home to a world-leading program in cone beam computed 

tomography (CT), a new method of targeting and treating tumours combining imaging and radiation therapy. 

This new system, allowing for more precise and targeted radiation being applied to tumours, was made possible 

by lottery proceeds. 

• The Robert & Maggie Bras and Family New Drug Development Program undertakes clinical trials using cuttingedge 

cancer drugs. Promising results of a recent clinical trial involving a new drug called Tarceva (erotinib) indicate 

it may increase survival rates in lung cancer patients while also improving negative side effects associated with typical 

treatments. (See adjacent page.) 

• New Clinical Research Programs and Clinical Impact Teams are comprised of groups of scientific experts collaborating 

to investigate clinical areas such as cancer genetics, gene therapy and site-specific issues. Recently, this group tested a 

successful new treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. 

• PMH’s Lab for Applied Biophotonics includes laser and microscopy labs to advance imaging research applications in 

photodynamic (that using fibreoptic and infared light against a tumor) and thermal cancer therapies and diagnostics. 

Currently Princess Margaret Hospital is conducting the first Canadian clinical trials using a new light activated 

photodynamic drug called TOOKAD. Because the delivery of light therapy can be very accurately directed, we 

expect this therapy will be used against cancer, eliminating risk of damage to healthy tissue located near a tumour. 

• The Philip S. Orsino Cell Therapy Centre represents a new era in innovative research and treatment options for 

leukemia patients. In high-risk cases, the Centre will be able to offer very specialized transplants using partially 

matched bone marrow donors. This represents a significant step forward in leukemia treatment, as previously 

patients required a more complete match in order to receive a viable transplant. For many, such donors could not 

always be found, diminishing the transplant option. 


Hope for Halting Breast Cancer 

Return in Post-Menopausal Women 

(October 2003) A major international 

clinical trial conceived and chaired by 

PMH’s Dr. Paul Goss showed that the 

drug letrozole given after tamoxifen 

reduced by 44 per cent the chance of 

breast cancer returning in postmenopausal 

women. 

The results were so positive that an 

independent safety monitoring 

committee recommended that the clinical 

trial end early so participants receiving a 

placebo could be offered letrozole. 

The study, published October 9, 2003 

in the New England Journal of Medicine, 

involved 5,187 women from nine 

countries. It compared letrozole to a 

placebo for halting cancer in postmenopausal 

breast cancer survivors who 

had completed five years of treatment 

with the drug tamoxifen.

Early Lung Drug Results Promising: Patients 

Enjoy Longer, Better Life 

Preliminary clinical trial tests using Tarceva – one 

of the cancer drugs known as epidermal growthfactor 

receptor blockers – showed that Tarceva 

improved overall survival by two or more months. 

Tarceva was tested in non-small-cell lung cancer 

patients who had failed to respond to chemotherapy. 

PMH’s Dr. Frances Shepherd, who led the research, 

said the trial results "represent a significant 

advancement in treating patients, because 

Tarceva was shown to both extend life and provide 

symptomatic improvement." 

New treatment improves lung cancer survival 

Two studies suggest chemotherapy combined with 

surgery will help some lung cancer patients survive 

longer. Results presented at ASCO – the American 

Society of Clinical Oncology – indicated that by 

adding chemotherapy after surgery, up to 15% 

more patients will survive. 

Survival rate for people with earlier stages of the 

disease jumped from an average 54 per cent of 

patients alive after five years, to 69 per cent living 

for five years. "This is a major step forward," 

explains PMH’s Dr. Frances Shepherd, "because 

the five-year survival is so significant." 

SUCCESSFUL FAMILY PHILANTHROPY, 

THE MUZZOS’ WAY 

When a loved one is touched by cancer, often the entire 

family is affected. The Muzzo family is one such example. 

When Robert Muzzo, son of Marco and Resy, was 

diagnosed with bladder cancer the news resonated through 

the entire family. This prompted Marco and Resy and their 

family to establish the Muzzo Family Minimally Invasive 

Surgical Oncology Program Fund in January, 2003. 

This fund supports photodynamic therapy (PDT) research – 

an innovative therapy that uses a light sensitive drug called 

TOOKAD – and another breakthrough trial therapy called 

interstitial microwave thermal therapy, which involves heat 

waves being used to target and destroy cancer tumours. 

Despite his valiant struggle, Robert passed away earlier in 

2004. The Muzzos’ firsthand understanding of cancer’s 

impact prompted them to support new and innovative 

surgical techniques for prostate cancer, hoping to spare 

other families from suffering their same experience. 

Even through their sadness and grief, the Muzzos continue 

to strengthen their commitment to Princess Margaret 

Hospital. The family is directing memorial donations in 

Robert’s honour to the fund they established and are also 

organizing a fundraising event called “Moto Amore.” This 

initiative will allow auto enthusiasts to experience one of 

Robert’s favourite pastimes – car racing. Marc Muzzo, 

Robert’s brother, has also become an enthusiastic volunteer 

with The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation’s campaign, 

as the Vice-Chair of the Prostate Centre fundraising team. 

And, as a result of their generosity, early results from PDT 

trials have shown great promise, with many patients 

experiencing a measure of improved success over prostate 

cancer. 

It isn’t very often that one encounters a committed, giving 

family like the Muzzos. Over the past year, The Princess 

Margaret Hospital Foundation has been introduced, again 

and again, to their wonderful generosity and spirit. They 

truly illustrate how meaningful and effective family 

philanthropy can be. 


A SPECIALLY PLANNED LEGACY 

It shows that Linda Grossman is, in her words, “passionate about Princess Margaret 

Hospital and its mission to beat cancer.” 

Sadly, cancer has taken an enormous toll on Linda’s family. Her father passed away from 

multiple myeloma and her brother-in-law, Walter Pape, was also lost to it at age 67. 

“Walter was very important to me. He always looked out for me,” explains Mrs. 

Grossman. “He was taken too early. I felt a terrible void when he passed away.” 

After his death Linda began to donate $1,000 or more annually to The Princess 

Margaret Hospital Foundation’s Walter B. Pape Fund, an endowment supporting 

multiple myeloma research. 

Terribly, cancer struck Linda’s family again. When her niece - Walter’s daughter - 

succumbed to a fatal brain tumour while only 37, Linda’s resolve to help beat 

the dreaded disease was further galvanized. 

Reading about supporting charities via life insurance, Linda realized that her annual 

gifts could fund a life insurance policy to create a significant investment in cancer 

research. She then purchased a $40,000 insurance policy with $1,000 in annual 

premiums owing for thirteen years. Each premium earns her a charitable donation 

receipt, with nearly half of her payments being mitigated by income tax savings 

each year. 

Thus, as part of her own legacy, Linda has now provided a $40,000 contribution toward conquering cancer. The actual cost 

to her, however, is only about $8,000 over thirteen years. 

Since establishing her planned gift, Linda continues to be involved with the Hospital: She attends lectures and events and 

reads as much as she can about cancer, its treatments and the progress being made in research. 

Mrs. Grossman explains that her family always believed in charity, a tradition she upholds by helping as she can. Even 

though she did something impressive to fight cancer, she still maintains “I have benefited more than Princess Margaret 

Hospital from making this gift.” 

Always busy, Linda manages the clinic where her husband practices dentistry and has also published a series of six books to 

educate children worldwide about child abuse and how to overcome it. 

She is a mother of three, a grandmother of three and she encourages all parents to instill in their children a sense of the 

importance of giving back, of doing one’s part to help out wherever possible. 

When asked about advice for somebody considering a gift of life insurance, Linda enthusiastically states “Just do it, and do it 

now! It’s such an easy way to donate - more people should know about it. If I had it to do over I would act sooner and fund 

a larger gift, or even buy more than one policy.” 

She adds quickly, “I want cancer to be a thing of the past ... I just hope my little bit helps.”

NEW WALL REFLECTS MOTIVATIONS FOR GIVING 

Princess Margaret Hospital is lauded internationally for many world firsts in the realm of 

cancer research breakthroughs and treatment advancements. The Hospital’s reputation as a 

world oncology leader is maintained with the aid of over 230,000 donors who give 

generously to advance our cancer research, care and education initiatives. 

To express our appreciation to so many charitable supporters, the Foundation is pleased to 

announce a special new recognition opportunity: The Wings of Hope Dove Wall, to be 

located in the Hospital’s highly trafficked main floor atrium. 

To be unveiled in October 2004, the wall will feature doves etched in glass and available at 

three different levels - $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. Those interested in being part of 

this very special, highly visible initiative will receive their own dove to use to dedicate a 

name and / or a personal message to a loved one, caregiver or another individual to be 

honoured. Payment options include either a one time gift or multi-year pledge. 

The dove image, originally used in a very popular and financially successful direct mail 

appeal of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, has evolved to represent our 

support for the Hospital’s patients and their families. For those seeing the wall, each name 

and dedication acknowledges a particularly cherished person and reminds us of the hope 

present in the Hospital. 

As the wall fills with dedications and doves, we hope it will also inspire others to remember 

that they – even just as one person – can make a difference. Also, when the actions of many 

are united, extraordinary things are possible. 

DONORS SUPPORT CARE-RELATED EQUIPMENT NEEDS 

The power of one can be great, but 

when the actions of many are united 

the impact is even greater. Princess 

Margaret Hospital knows this well from 

responses to its pleas for funding for 

necessary patient care-related equipment. 

In 2000 lengthening waiting lists for 

women requiring ultrasound testing to 

diagnose breast cancer first prompted a 

call to action. An appeal to Hospital 

donors begged help to purchase a much 

needed second ultrasound for the Breast 

Centre. The call was answered: 

$191,000 flooded in. Soon installed, 

the machine shortened waiting lists. 

Women continued to receive the 

excellent care they needed, but faster 

than before. 


A 2001 letter detailing the need for 

pain pumps for patients, to control 

their pain and increase their comfort, 

garnered an extraordinary response. 

Sympathizing with those living with the 

effects of cancer, including possible 

chronic pain, donors gave generously to 

raise $316,000 and over achieved the 

target. 

They funded pain pumps for malignant 

hematology (blood disorders) patients. 

Excess was put to other key uses including: 

training staff in the use of the high-tech 

pumps; buying state of the art equipment, 

used in gynecological surgery; and 

purchasing new prostate research items, 

among other things. 

With doves dedicated to acknowledging 

loved ones,The Wings of Hope wall will 

offer hope and support to patients and 

their families. 

Another appeal contributed to the 

purchase of a critical diagnostic tool, a 

state of the art Computed Tomography 

(CT) / PET scan, used to seek out ‘hidden 

cancers’ of all types. Purchased in 2002 

and one of only two machines in Canada, 

it has revolutionized diagnostics at PMH. 

More recently, general items to improve 

everyday patient care and comfort have 

also been purchased with our generous 

donors’ help. 

In recent years, over 22,000 equipmentallocated 

gifts have contributed greatly 

to the health, comfort and wellbeing of 

thousands of Princess Margaret Hospital 

patients. Thank you to all our valued

A TRULY SPECIAL EVENT: REBECCA’S HOPE 

At five feet two, Rebecca Borg wasn’t 

someone described as physically 

powerful. Yet even petite in stature, 

Rebecca’s determination and strength 

while battling cancer was awe-inspiring, 

for her friends, family and even staff 

at Princess Margaret Hospital. 

Just 20 years old in 2002 when, 

beginning her second year of studies 

at Queen’s University in Kingston, 

Rebecca was diagnosed with acute 

myelogenous leukemia. During 

months of treatment, including 

chemotherapy and a bone marrow 

transplant at Princess Margaret 

Hospital, Rebecca’s tenacity and 

bright smile inspired many around 

her. 

Sadly, however, Rebecca passed away 

on October 30, 2003. But even gone, 

Rebecca’s joy of life will continue to 

impact others via the inaugural 

Rebecca’s Hope Charity Cruise, 

scheduled for September in Toronto.

Response to the event has been overwhelming! 

In advance of happening, 

the cruise has already raised more 

than $75,000 (and could even reach 

$100,000!) for leukemia research at 

Princess Margaret Hospital. The 

luxurious Captain Matthew Flinders 

cruiser – generously donated for the 

event by Mariposa Cruise Line – has 

sold to capacity, prompting the 

addition of a second boat to meet the 

great demand. Reflecting the deep 

bond forged between the Borg family 

"Rebecca's Garden" is the title of the original painting by artist Lynn Daly, 

specially created to celebrate Rebecca Borg’s life. 

The painting came into being when Lynn, a long time friend of the Borgs, 

learned of the Rebecca's Hope Charity Cruise. For Lynn, an artist for 25 

years, creating a painting was second nature. It became a meaningful way 

for her to use her talent to pay lasting tribute to Rebecca while also raising 

funds for leukemia research. 

To Lynn, the painting signifies the promise of hope, a foundation of faith 

and the gift of seasonal renewal.

Hospital, many staff are expected to 

take part.

and Theo, brothers Phil and Dave 

– believe the remarkable response is a 

reflection of how deeply Rebecca 

touched those around her, both in 

good health and while ill. Regardless 

of her wellbeing or comfort, Rebecca 

always greeted those who visited her 

hospital room with her characteristic 

radiant smile. 

Even though leukemia robbed 

Rebecca of her dreams of teaching; 

traveling; falling in love and having 

children; this Mississauga woman’s 

courage and resolve to live life 

completely has created a lasting 

legacy to contribute to new 

treatments – and hopefully one 

day a cure – for cancer.

Acknowledging the accomplishments of staff and volunteers of Princess Margaret Hospital and its research arm, the 

Ontario Cancer Institute: 

Prizes and Honours 

(2003) Dr. Ian Tannock (PMH/OCI), one of Canada's 

best-known oncologists, was named as the winner of the 

O. Harold Warwick Prize, recognizing scientists whose 

research has had a major impact on cancer control in Canada. 

Dr. Tannock’s research has been instrumental in improving the 

quality of clinical trials and cancer treatment worldwide. He 

introduced the use of quality of life and pain relief as effective 

outcome measurements in clinical trials and used these 

measurements to establish less toxic chemotherapy drugs as 

standard treatment for advanced prostate cancer. 

(August 2003) Dr. Alastair Cunningham (PMH/OCI) was 

named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Dr. Cunningham is 

a psycho-oncologist - a specialist in the interrelationship between 

biology and behaviour - best known for having authored the 

book The Healing Journey. 

Cited as a groundbreaking researcher and “a man of immense 

compassion,” he works to improve the quality of life and life 

expectancy of cancer patients. Dr. Cunningham is considered a 

pioneer and world leader. His books and the program he offers 

at Princess Margaret Hospital have provided guidance for 

thousands seeking healing and hope. 

(November 3003) Dr. Tak Mak of OCI and the Advanced 

Medical Discoveries Institute (AMDI), is lauded as the 2004 

winner of the Paul Ehrlich & Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize 

for his role in cloning the T cell receptor. 

The prize is Germany’s highest international honour for 

biomedical research and Dr. Mak is the first Canadian 

to be chosen as its winner. 

(2003) Dr. David Jaffray (PMH), Head of Radiation Physics, 

was announced as one of the Report on Business’ Canada's Top 

40 Under 40. He was included in acknowledgement of his 

leadership in the development of image guided radiation therapy. 

The prestigious award honours people who have achieved a 

significant level of success but have not yet reached the age of 40. 

(2004) Dr. Shepherd (PMH), chief of lung cancer research at the 

Hospital and professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, 

was the leader of an international study that boasted important 

medical advances in the treatment of advanced lung cancer. 


The study showed that patients who took the drug Tarceva lived 

an average of 42% longer than patients who did not receive the 

chemotherapy drug. Despite numerous Tarceva studies, this 

study is the first to demonstrate a survival advantage. 

(2004) Dr. Frances Shepherd was also the recipient of the 2004 

Jacqueline Seroussi Memorial Foundation for Cancer Research 

Award for her research on malignant disease. 

(2004) John A. MacNaughton, former Chairman of the Board 

of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, was named a 

Member of the Order of Canada. 

Mr. MacNaughton was cited for having shown outstanding 

leadership as a businessman and exemplary dedication as a 

volunteer. He has given selflessly of his time and expertise to 

fundraise for local healthcare institutions. Presently a trustee of 

the University Health Network, he served as chairman of The 

Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation from 1997-2002.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO GRADUATE STUDENT ENDOWMENT 

In 1997 the Foundation negotiated an agreement in which a grant of $3,300,000 from the Foundation to the University of 

Toronto was matched equally by the University and the Ontario Government through the Ontario Student Opportunity 

Trust Fund. This established a $9,900,000 endowment to be held by the University for the benefit of graduate students 

studying with University faculty members located at Princess Margaret Hospital and engaged in cancer research.
