Dear Friends of HSDC,<br />
Thanks to you, <strong>Hearing</strong>, <strong>Speech</strong> & <strong>Deafness</strong> <strong>Center</strong> (HSDC) has been a portal to<br />
possibility for over 5,000 children and adults facing communication challenges<br />
this year. Our clients come to us when their access to the world has been<br />
interrupted. Whether a deaf newborn, a second grader struggling to read, or a<br />
hard of hearing grandparent, we empower all our clients and their families to<br />
reconnect with the world through a combination of direct services, education, and<br />
referral to our partners. And we couldn’t have done it without you!<br />
In 2012, we started celebrating our 75th anniversary, and we couldn’t have been happier to celebrate<br />
with all of you! Despite the economic hardships of the continuing recession, HSDC supporters came out in<br />
force this year — contributing their time, money and talent. This support not only allowed us to continue<br />
providing vital services, but to expand our reach across the breadth of our services.<br />
This year we significantly extended our early intervention services in Pierce County; we added six new<br />
families in the area, and hope to add more! Community American Sign Language classes and a<br />
Communication Strategies Class for hard of hearing adults and their families were introduced at the<br />
Seattle office, and in Bellingham, HSDC Client Advocates facilitated a Task Force with a local hospital<br />
enabling the Deaf Community to express concerns and experiences about receiving ER services.<br />
Heading into the next fiscal year, we have five new initiatives to continue improving our services to clients<br />
and the community:<br />
� A New Daycare: <strong>Hearing</strong>, <strong>Speech</strong> & <strong>Deafness</strong> <strong>Center</strong> is in the process of setting up a new language<br />
-rich daycare featuring an American Sign Language component. We hope to open in the Fall of<br />
2012.<br />
� Parent-Infant Program (PIP) Expansion: With requests coming in for more support, HSDC is<br />
currently working on funding to expand the program in Pierce, Snohomish and King Counties as well<br />
as providing services in Whatcom and Skagit Counties through the HSDC Bellingham office.<br />
� Store Expansion: Inspired by a strong relationship with Holland America cruise lines who have been<br />
working with the Store for years, HSDC is targeting our assistive technology support to hotels,<br />
restaurants, and other areas of the tourism industry to ensure access for all.<br />
� Renovation Project: The <strong>Center</strong> currently has an unfinished space in the Seattle building of about<br />
1,000 square feet that is being used for storage. HSDC is clearing that room and will work to<br />
develop it into office space for other nonprofits.<br />
� Public Safety Program: For many years, HSDC has had positive and productive relationships with<br />
public safety personnel and departments. As part of the agency’s dual focus – services to<br />
individuals and creating systemic change – HSDC will work to broaden training and support for all<br />
public safety aspects that affect people with hearing loss.<br />
