12 Resources and Education The Mokena Community Public Library District has recently added a variety of new programs. Call or stop in to register and learn about the following: Challenge a Librarian Once a month, challenge one of the Library Service Desk Librarians at their gaming skills. Each month a designated game will be chosen to be played. If you beat the Librarian, you earn a prize. If you lose, you will earn a raffle ticket for a prize drawing at the end of the month. Anyone ages 10 and older are eligible to play. Gale Online Courses Gale Courses offers a wide range of highly interactive, instructor led courses that you can take entirely online. As a library card holder in good standing, you are entitled to these courses at no cost. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month. Music in the Box Music in the Box utilizes music and literature to encourage a child’s ability to concentrate and listen. It also encourages early literacy. The free 20 minute program is for children ages newborn to 5 years of age. It involves a special hello song to greet each child, exploration of a variety of rhythm instruments, rhythmic poems, and music picture books, and scarf songs with tactile elements. A parent or caregiver must be present. Happy Back Yoga Yoga for a Happy Back Class is designed to cultivate optimal spinal health and comfort. Many of us spend our days sitting; driving, hunched over, or carrying stress in our shoulders and all of this can lead to poor spinal health and chronic back pain. This class helps alleviate back pain and other spinal issues. Alignment Based Yoga postures are taught to create stability and space in the hips and spine, as well as relieve tension in the upper back, neck, and shoulders. All levels are welcome. Virtual Reality The library’s new Virtual Reality Station allows patrons to experience cutting edge virtual technology. Reserve your time and experience virtual entertainment, gaming, and learning opportunities that make you feel like you are a part of the action. Trivia Nights at Doc’s Smokehouse The Mokena Community Public Library has joined with Doc’s Smokehouse for trivia night. Come by and showcase your smarts against other trivia geeks as you compete to win awesome prizes and enjoy great food. Each trivia night will be centered on a new theme every month. Come alone or as a team! This is one night the library won’t help you find the answers. We only supply the questions!!! Access to first-class education at all levels is a significant draw for families and employers interested in relocating to Mokena. There are numerous early childhood education and daycare centers that cater to working parents and provide a great learning base for children. The majority of students entering primary school attend Mokena School District 159, while Frankfort School District 157-C, New Lenox School District 122 and Summit Hill School District 161 serve small portions of Mokena. All three primary school districts feed into Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210. There are also alternatives to the K-8 public school options in the Mokena area. Locally, students enroll at St. Mary’s Catholic School and the Noonan Elementary Academy. The local alternative to the public high school program is Providence Catholic High School. Graduating high school seniors and adults looking to enhance their skill sets are afforded a number of higher learning opportunities in the southwest suburbs. Within 20 miles of Mokena, residents have access to several colleges, universities and technical schools, including the Rasmussen College’s Mokena- Tinley Park campus, Moraine Valley Community College, Governors State University, Lewis University, the University of St. Francis, Prairie State College and South Suburban College.
