This month has seen us hang out with new girl group
Stooshe at the Revolution Go-Karting racetrack in
Mile End, London. The girls were great fun and really
enjoyed themselves, so we’re hoping that when
they’re winning multiple Brit Awards they remember
g3 and invite us to the after-party – we did tell them
to or we’d break their knee caps. Just saying, Stooshe,
just saying. Turn to page 14 to fi nd out more about
the band and their rise to fame so far…
March is all about spring cleaning, so we decided to
take a different route with the fashion pages this
month, cleared out our wardrobes and asked Mercury
to show us her skills with a make-up brush. She’s
come up with some great new looks for you to try
out. Whether you normally go all out with full makeup
or with nothing at all, she’s got it covered.
This month also saw the release of The L Project single
It Does Get Better which, as we go to print, has
reached number 11 in the independent singles chart
and has close to 120,000 views on Youtube. The
charity song has become a massive hit thanks to all
Stooshe
Listen up! Courtney, Alex
and Karis will be ripping
up the charts this year
with their perfectly-pieced
together package of sound,
attitude and style…
We take the threesome go-kart
racing – just because we can.
But before we get our speed
fi x: who’s the gay one, how did
they get together, and what’s
going on in Stooshe’s world…?

Interview
Mix together a dollop of En Vogue’s swagger and a
sprinkle of Salt-n-Pepa’s attitude, mash the mixture
together with TLC’s musical combo and you are still
nowhere near to where these girls are taking music in
2012. Humph. Why is this unique girl group so hard to
describe? Well…
They are fantastically loud, suitably rebellious and all
from south London, but this is where the similarity
ends. “We are totally different characters, I think
that’s why it works. Alex is very ladylike with her style,
she loves the whole 80s/90s era. Courtney we call
Ghetro-Retro Ghetto, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and I love
the 50s – girly, but with loads of tattoos,” explains Karis.
The combo unexpectedly works, and what’s
important is that their record company hasn’t added
any fake bits to the mix – it’s all 100% natural: “We’re
kind of rough round the edges. It’s not perfect, but if
we wanna do it, we do it,” adds Alex.
Unlike their karting top speeds, they are tipped by
music big-wigs to hit the chart tarmac at lightning
pace, similarly to how Jessie J did in 2011. They have
already been nominated by Radio One as the BBC
Sound of 2012 and for T4’s Rising Stars of 2012 and
were signed by Warner just six months after forming.
Karis says: “It wasn’t ever like, let’s audition for this
girl. We were all doing different things. Karis always
wanted to be a singer, but Courtney was at theatre
school and working in M&S, and Alex was at uni.”
Courtney and Alex met in Topshop only a year ago
when a stylist spotted them and asked if they could
sing – luck had it that they’re not bad at that either.
They then met Karis in the studio and went on a
whirlwind journey where they hooked up with some
of the best in the biz. “We’ve been in the studio for a
year and fi nished our album – out in June,” says Karis.
The story sounds like fate: “It was weird that we were
even spotted, I never go to Bluewater, I live in Penge!
Everything happens for a reason,” says Courtney.
Stooshe have made some killer
tracks, but who will stomp it on these tracks?
It’s obvious that they get on incredibly well, and life
has changed dramatically for the three girls. Alex,
beaming, says: “I think, what good have I done in my
life to deserve this?” Courtney adds: “We’ve got a
great balance, it’s like a family balance,” and Alex
agrees: “It’s like a little family. It’s us three, Jo Perry
and Future Cut writing together.”
Talking about ‘family’, in every family there is always a
gay one, right? So who is it? ’Fess up… and Courtney
does! “Yeah! I mean, I come out in one of our songs. I
think it’s just being who you are and being able to
express what you do through your music. I’m not
gonna lie. At fi rst my family didn’t know, so when the
song went online, I tried to delete my family from
Facebook, but now my mum knows, everyone else
knows and they’re all cool about it. The gay thing is
who I am so… people accept us for who we are.”
Female singers have been alluding to dalliances with
other women for some years, and it’s become very
popular. “It’s just about being comfortable,” Courtney
explains. “I think some people are doing it to follow
fashion, whereas before people might have thought
‘I can’t be this because it’s frowned upon’. Now they
can think ‘I’m not gonna rule it out’. If you make it
normal, then everyone else will take it as normal and
get on with it.”
Stooshe claim that their fan base is mainly women,
possibly ones who admire that they are out there and
swooshe!
Alex was hot favourite, but no one could have predicted how utterly rubbish
Courtney was behind the wheel – she was lapped in two minutes! Seriously,
my granny could’ve done better in her mobility aid. In her defence, she
admitted: “I’m scared. I’ve never driven a car before” – it showed, honey! From
the start, Alex was in the lead with Karis close on her tail… until the fi nal lap.
With the fi nish line in sight, Karis, with no regard for personal safety, fl oored it
and sped to victory. “I really thought Alex was going to win,” exclaimed Karis.
“That was amazing, can we go again?”
Revolution Karting, Arches 422-424, Mile End Park, Burdett Road, London E3 4AA.
are different. “Well, we notice a lot of heartbeat Jessie
J fans and Rihanna navy tweeting us,” says Karis. Alex
reckons they have the female thumbs-up because
“… we’re confi dent in our skin.” She adds: “I don’t
think it’s about preaching about women power, we’re
just doing what we want to do. We wear what we
want, we say what we want, and that’s enough just
for girls to look up to.”
One last thing before we race, wtf does the name
Stooshe mean? Alex gets back to her roots and
explains in her south London accent: “Stoosh is a word
used in London for a girl who thinks she’s too good.
Then we looked it up in the urban dictionary and it
means hidden away or a mystery, so we liked that
different contrast. Then we added the ‘e’ to make it
‘she’ for girl power.” So, as the interview comes to an
end, I begin to get tearful and super gushy to the extent
that I’m now cringing: “You’re so good, I love you, and
I only ever say it to you girls because you’re so great…
blah, blah… hey, where’ve you gone…?” The girls
drive off, leaving behind a trail of dust and a bemused
me in the starting lane… oh well…*sigh* bye.
Out 30 March
★★★★✩
The acting is terrible, cringeworthy.
Get. Up. Out. Of. Your. Seat. And. Have.
A. Walk. Around – terrible. The 3D
technology is a massive bonus, but on
the whole made me feel a bit bipolar.
However, frick, can these guys dance,
and wow, it’s worth watching just for
the unbearably sexy Sofi a Boutella.
Boutella, solely and most impressively,
turned this movie around for me. She is
literally like walking fi re on legs, I just
wish she wore less clothing in the last
scene. So, my verdict: who cares if they
can’t act. This is 3Dtastic, verging on
mild porn and highly amusing. I need a
cold shower now.
cinema/big miracle
Out now
★★★✩✩
Drew Barrymore’s new breakthrough
movie… What was I to expect? It’s a
fi lm about whales! I was more
intrigued about what the large
mammals thought of Barrymore. The
whales, who unlike me could not
escape from the screen, were
unfortunately stuck in miles of thick
ice – tragic. Alas, I have to admit the
mix of whales and Barrymore,
combined with the mini love
storyline, actually brought a real tear
to my eye. This fi lm entertains, makes
you cry and boosts your love for, erm,
whales. Let’s start donating!
★★★★✩
A French short fi lm focusing on the
gender identity of a pre-pubescent girl,
Laure. Beautiful and magically innocent,
it reveals the struggle and stresses of a
10-year-old and her infatuation with
wanting to become a boy. This is an
ambitious topic to cover but, rather
than offend or annoy, it takes you on a
charming, delightful and informative
journey. TomBoy not only attracts you
emotionally, it also opens you up to a
raw and honest performance from the
private and momentarily secret world
of Laure and her alter ego masculine
identity, Mickele.
dvd/elfie hopkins
Out in April
★★★✩✩
Terrifi ed of anything horror, Elfi e
Hopkins scared me sh*tless.
However, I am a complete wimp.
Elfi e, an aspiring teenage detective,
along with best friend Dylan, go on
an adventure trying to uncover the
secrets of the Gammon family: a
‘normal’ family, new to the village.
They soon discover that fl ight
journeys advertised to local villagers
from the new city folk are actually
malicious traps to sustain their
cloudburst
Canada 2011. Dir: Thom Fitzgerald. 93min.
How refreshing to see older women starring in such
a witty, well-written ‘road movie with attitude’!
Cloudburst is the unmissable centrepiece screening
for the 26th LLGFF in London this year.
Potty-mouth butch Stella and the blind but ditsy
Dotty are a lesbian pensioner couple with 31 years
together. A granddaughter thinks specialist care
is the only way to look after Dotty and places her
away from her lover in a nursing home. Ballsy Stella
springs her from the place and whisks her off to
Canada to get legally married so that they cannot
be split up.
Acting skills from Oscar-winning actress Brenda
Fricker and Academy and Golden Globe winner
Olympia Dukakis give a sensitive portrayal of the
lovers who are desperate to stay together at all costs.
Cloudburst gives much-needed publicity to legal
rights and the ageing gay population while managing
to entertain, inform and enrich all who see it.
what you looking at?
UK 2011. Dir: Aleem Khan Faryal. 9min
A blonde drag queen and a Muslim girl wearing a full-length, black hijab are
stuck in a lift together… A great premise for a film short and one that does not
disappoint, as the two protagonists find they have much in common. Funny,
poignant and off-the-wall, this ‘what-if’ scenario is a baby gem of a movie.
the mountain
Norway 2011.
Dir: Ole Giæver. 73min.
Given that a silent movie has just won
a BAFTA, the art of saying very little
and communicating much simply
through the actor/director dynamic is
a skill to be admired in this intense
and emotional film.
Lesbian couple Nora and her
pregnant girlfriend Solveig take on
the physical challenge of a mountain
climb together to revisit the site of a
previous tragedy: a metaphor for how
far they have to go in their relationship
to overcome their personal difficulties.
The tale shows their tensions and
strengths in equal measure as
they strive ever upward. Tense and
uplifting; a mature offering from this
Iran/USA
Dir: Maryam Keshavarz. 107min.
This little gem won the Audience
Award at the Sundance Film Festival in
2011. The story is based on a recovering
drug addict brother and his unruly
sister who live affluent lives in
modern-day Tehran.
Returning from rehab, the boy takes
an increasing interest in Islam and
morality, causing his parents to reflect
on their own issues with religion and
tradition. The daughter, meanwhile,
is dealing with her own budding
bisexuality, made more complicated
when her brother asks her girlfriend
to marry him. A contemporary
tale dealing with relevant issues of
personal freedom and oppression in
the Islamic Republic of Iran.
behind the scenes…
Ever wondered how our favourite film festival
comes together? We catch up with Emma Smart,
festival programmer for LLGFF, to find out more.
How do you choose the films? It’s about the film being engaging and
entertaining. If the film moves me, I want to include it. Fundamentally, you
have to believe in the film you are programming.
What makes a successful film? It could be many things – how good the
acting is, the plot, has the director done something innovative in the telling of
the story? If the film has hooked me in right from the beginning, it’s the right one.
Last year there were worries the festival would stop altogether after
funding cuts, although tickets sold out straight away. How can such
a successful festival be under threat? The good news is that the festival is
back this year with more films than last year and more days to enjoy. We have
extended the festival to 10 days, with two weekends. There are huge costs in
arranging a festival. The BFI has had to look very carefully at all its activities last
year in order to deal with funding cuts. Through careful budgeting, we have
mananged to keep the festival going. The festival is extremely important for the
LGBT community – both audiences and filmmakers – and that is why the BFI
has presented it for 26 years. We really appreciate the public support we have
enjoyed over the years, and the BFI is committed to promoting diversity in all
its forms and serving a broad range of audiences.
How can we ensure the festival continues? And, as there is so much
demand, gets even bigger? The best way to keep the festival going is to buy
tickets. For those with deeper pockets there is the chance to become a special
supporter. Anyone can use social media to ensure our message gets out.
Which type of films tend to be the most popular? People like good,
well-told stories that may not have been told before. But we are delighted that
we can have queues for both romantic comedies and X-rated erotica, musicals
and melodramas, coming-out stories and compelling documentaries. We
expect a local audience to turn out for Campbell X’s eagerly awaited Stud Life.
Which film do you think will be most popular with women this
year and why? We can never predict exactly which films will be popular, but
our opening film, Cloudburst, with Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker is a
real treat, Kathleen Turner turns in a great performance in The Perfect Family
and there are romantic hi-jinks in Kiss Me, while outdoor types will love The
Mountain. We have a great lineup of exciting documentaries such as Love
Free Or Die about controversial gay bishop Gene Robinson and one about a
forgotten androgynous star of queer 70s rock, Jobriath A.D.
The festival is more than just films, what else is on offer? There are free
films in the mediatheque, discussions, after-parties and DJs in the bar, lectures
and visits by directors and actors with a chance for audiences to ask questions.
The whole of BFI Southbank becomes a very friendly place, like a giant lesbian
and gay community centre. And it’s
easy to meet people too. Nobody was
ever offended by being asked what they
thought of a film. The newly revived Dyke
March (31 March) will finish on the South
Bank, and we anticipate a higher lesbian
presence on that day.
“ We expect a local
audience to turn out for
Campbell X’s eagerly
awaited Stud Life
”
Music
music/on the record
for girls who tune in
At the time of writing, the internet
is buzzing with ‘leaks’ from the
forthcoming Madonna album,
M.D.N.A (Maverick), a reference to
both her name, the drug MDMA and
DNA. I have managed to snitch a listen,
and I think DNA is the most relevant
meaning, as she seems to have reached
a point in her career where it is difficult
to tell whether she is still an influence
on modern divas like Gaga or indeed is
now solely influenced by them. Either
way, the genes are being rapidly passed
around! The track leaked in November,
Gimme All Your Luvin’ featuring M.I.A.
and Nicki Minaj, is a great uplifting
pop tune, especially accompanied
by the mental cheerleading video. It
could be said that she is trying too
hard to stay in the game after being
around for so long, but M.D.N.A has
enough high points to be a worthy
release from the 53 year-old material
woman who isn’t done yet.
The Ting Tings album, Sounds from
Nowheresville (Columbia), is their
second full-length release since We
Started Nothing in 2008, and the
punky-electro, fizzing drum machines
and crackly guitars still sound fresh
and more exciting than ever. A lot of
the tracks were written in France, and
they recorded the bulk of them in
the basement of a former jazz club in
Berlin. You can hear their excitement
on the album, and the sound edges
toward albums that have been
recorded live. The single, Hang It Up,
is a good place to start. An excellent
album all round: sharp, sexy and sassy.
Staying with the interesting side of
electro for just a minute longer, we
have Ladyhawke (who is really called
Pip Brown, bless) releasing Anxiety
(Modular), which comes nearly
four years after her debut. She cites
“sheer exhaustion” as the reason
for such a massive delay and seems
excited about this album being a
more “straight up rock record” with
influences like Nirvana, The Pixies
and Blur. She recorded it with her
producer, Pascal Gabriel, at his house
in the south of France. And why
wouldn’t you? She’s really innovative,
produces listenable tunes as well as
being watchable and is still clearly
evolving into an interesting artist.
Release of the month, and certainly
contender for album of the year,
has to be the debut offering from
folk/soul master Michael Kiwanuka.
Home Again (Polydor) is a joyous hit
factory from start to finish. Michael
has been compared to Bill Withers,
Van Morrison and Otis Redding, which
shamefully doesn’t leave much room
for direct praise for the man himself.
The recordings are warm and soulful,
and you almost expect to find out that
they found them in a vault from 1969.
It reminds me of hearing Nina Simone
for the first time and knowing that,
sonically, I am in safe hands. Not that
he is in any way as groundbreaking,
but he has the voice, is looking after
the genre for past generations, and
is now passing it on to you, so be
grateful! He is sublime.
As compilations go, the Late Night
Tales series is by far the best, and this
month sees the return of Belle &
Sebastian as curators. (If you don’t
have any of these ce soir compilations,
keep up! Various musicians and DJs
select their favourite nocturnal tracks,
and they are nearly always fabulous,
cool and collectable.) I still play these
albums more than anything else
and can’t recommend them highly
enough. Check out latenighttales.
co.uk and see why I’m so excited. Buy
them all, and you will have an enviable
collection for any occasion.
See you next month!
coins to help women escape prostitution. There are
a number of special events planned in London to
celebrate the achievements of feminism, which
include film screenings, talks, marches, and exhibitions.
But is IWD as successful as it should be, and does it
really continue to raise the most important issues
facing women around the world today? Or do we
need to return to its more radical roots?
International Lesbian Day (ILD) is celebrated
around the world annually on 8 October. This day
marks the achievements of lesbians in bringing
about sexual liberation and an end to compulsory
heterosexuality. ILD was first celebrated in the 1980s
and yet few in the UK seem to know of its existence.
There is certainly a need for a day or two for us
women to consider where we are now. Currently,
women and girls all over the world are suffering
rape, domestic violence and sexual harassment.
They are often harshly punished for being lesbians
or simply for refusing to live under the control of a
father or husband.
Violence against women affects more people
than HIV and Aids, and globally, at least one-third of
all women and girls will be beaten or sexually
abused once or more throughout their lives. The
news is not great in the UK, despite four decades of
feminism. A recent survey of Londoners’ attitudes
to rape found that almost half think that the victims
are at least partly to blame.
Anti-lesbianism and sexism go hand in hand. If
there is no option for a woman not to marry, how
is she ever going to be free from the control of
men? For example, despite the fact that it is far less
wasn’t built in a day…
dangerous to be an out lesbian in the UK than it is
in Jamaica, women in rich western countries are
also vulnerable to sexual violence and punishment
rapes. Dowry deaths, honour killings and female
genital mutilation all happen in the UK.
Swedish feminists are celebrating 8 March this
year by holding a large, noisy and very public
demonstration against unequal pay for women. Those
in Denmark are having a conference in which the
abuse of lesbians in the workplace will be discussed.
In Saudi Arabia this year, a small number of
lesbians will be getting together to plan a secret
conference at which gay rights for citizens will be
discussed. This is brave stuff.
I am considering starting a campaign to put the
feminism back into IWD here in the UK. Last year
Glasgow City Council organised a fashion show
and make-up displays, and one London borough
hosted a basket weaving and flower arranging class.
What a disgrace.
My friend, Julia, a proud feminist and lesbian, had
this to say when I asked her what IWD means to
her: “I will be spending the morning baking
cupcakes for world peace, and it will be a great
chance to wear my new Cath Kidstone floral retro
pinny. Then a trip to the nail bar, followed by an
empowering pole-dance class, and finally a
screening of Mamma Mia with my BFFs to remind
us all that being a woman is about liking Abba.”
Sarcasm aside, Julia is as concerned as I am that
IWD can return to something that feminists can be
proud of. Here’s hoping.

Follow Christopher Kane and Versace’s
statement with those brows. Let hair remain
soft and resist the urge to slap on the
mascara. You can get away with just using
three products with this look: concealer, lip
conditioner and powder.

This modern take on a 1940s pin up is
perfect for a night out. With a pretty
looped ponytail and pinned fringe you
need nothing more than a few hair pins
and an elastic. Sweep a single black line
across the top lid and highlight the inner
corner of eyes. At LFW for Jonathan
Saunders, the winged eyeliner reached
almost to the brows, whilst at Richard
Nicoll, black tape was stuck at the
corners of the eyes to create a modern,
graphic take on the trend. Red lips really
complete this look, but don’t worry if
you aren’t into lipstick, it works without!
We’re loving this ‘east London’ inspired
look. Back comb hair so it’s ultra messy
and knot up individual strands to add
even more texture. Finish off with a
rolled up a hat placed right on the back
of your ‘do. No need to go heavy on the
eyes, simply work the black or near black
lipstick. Job’s a good ‘un!

This 1920s inspired look is a little more
extreme. We suggest wine stained lips,
soft smokey eyes and heavy bottom
lashes. Hold finger waves in place with
hair pins and don’t worry too much about
it looking perfect, after all, this is our own
modern take on this style and we like to
be different! A great style for hair that is
at an ‘in-between’ length. (You’re not the
OUT OF
CONTROL
Relationships are diffi cult enough to negotiate
even when you really love each other, but
when one partner exhibits very controlling
behaviour it can push your affair to breaking
point. Chance Delgado examines the issues.
Controlling behaviour is a
coping mechanism. Extreme
controlling behaviour is
dysfunctional and can lead
to obsessive/compulsive
disorders; this is more
common than many realise,
and people affected are
unaware that they need
professional help, but a little
self-analysis can go a long
way to allowing a controller
to ‘let go’ and relax.
“Examine why you have
been tolerating controlling
behaviour fi rst – what does
that make you feel? This is
the fi rst step before you
attempt to change – change
is something that will need
to happen between you
as you both share equal
responsibility. Both of you
need to deal with your
self-esteem issues fi rst, then
everything else is more likely
to follow,” says consultant
clinical psychologist Doctor
Jenny Petrack.
COMMON PROBLEMS
CAUSED BY EXTREME
CONTROLLING
BEHAVIOUR
My partner is really bossy
and gets angry if things are
not done her way…
Help your partner to
realise that she has a need
to control, and ask her
to examine why it is so
distressing for her to give it
up. Offer examples of when
she has been unreasonably
controlling. Most ‘controllers’
were once children who
either felt powerless in
stressful situations or had
a controlling parent – and
so they have learned these
behaviours. By pointing
out that they are mirroring
their former controller’s
behaviour in order to be
the ‘bosser’ and not the
‘bossed’ can help them see
how it makes you feel in
the relationship.
I tell my partner she is too
controlling, but nothing
really changes…
Make a list of issues where
you want to take back
control or be involved in
the decision making. As the
‘bossed’ partner, you must
offer solutions for positive
change, otherwise you will
be locked in a repeating
cycle. Be responsible for
paying two or three bills a
month or organising the
social calendar. The best
partnerships work when
there is a division of labour.
This will help you feel more
empowered and more of an
equal within the relationship.
My partner always overrides
me, and I hate myself for
always allowing it…
Resentments kill love, erode
respect and will destroy
the hottest of partnerships.
When people control us,
they often do it because
they think they are making
good choices for us. Perhaps
you have problems with
confi dence. Assertiveness
training courses help,
but if you are sexually
submissive, it is likely that
you will choose partners
who tend to be controlling.
Negotiate the areas outside
the bedroom where you
want to regain control,
while assuring your partner
that you will still surrender
between the sheets.
I need to be in control or
I feel frustrated…
You must acknowledge
how frustrating it is to
be browbeaten by your
constant manipulation of
event outcomes. Make a
list with your partner and
decide what you can give up
controlling to wean yourself
off this neurotic behaviour.
Otherwise, the only people
who will be able to tolerate
you will be doormats and
masochists. Accepting
ourselves, and what has
made us unhappy and out of
control in the past, can open
doors to changes.
Single values
Following a long relationship, I
have recently become single and,
although I have never indulged in
one-night stands, I really miss sex.
I usually only sleep with people
I’m into and have feelings for, but
this doesn’t happen very often. I’m
in a quandary about whether to
have sex if and when the offer
comes along and feel like a bit of a
slag afterwards, or bear the
drought and hold out for
something more meaningful.
Hazel, Manchester
Brooke:
Yes, it is far too often that, unlike our
male counterparts, women are
labelled as whores if they sleep
around. Well, this shouldn’t deter
you as women are equals. I don’t see
any harm in spreading your legs, I
mean wings, as long as, fi rst, you
enjoy it (which I’m guessing you
really do) and, second, you are
completely honest with whoever
you are sleeping with so as to not
mislead her into thinking you are into
the obligatory long-term relationship
that so often is expected to follow.
Don’t go breaking any hearts, and
I’m sure you can make single life into
a whole lot of fun.
Daria:
Personally, I love being labelled a
whore, and I really love getting my
plastic bits away. For me, inviting
someone around for sex is like
playing chess with them, and I
have mastered all the moves. It’s
my favourite pastime. All you
narrow-minded judgementalists –
well, you are missing out.

beside the seaside
Brighton – whether it’s the
everyone in this gay favourite.
On 6 May, bank holiday Sunday, the annual
Stonewall Brighton Equality Walk hits the city
once again. The 10k walk, supported by American
Express and media partner Square Peg Media
– publisher of g3 and Out in the City magazines
– has tempted over 500 lesbian, gay and bisexual
people to take part.
This year, the walk has celebrity hosts, including
The Only Way Is Essex star Harry Derbidge and
Jane Hazlegrove from Casualty. Walkers will also
be competing for the Top Fundraiser and Top
Team prizes, with the Top Fundraiser winning
a luxury weekend for two in Paris, including
Eurostar travel.
Now in its ninth year, the Equality Walk has
become a fi rm favourite in Brighton’s gay
for a pre-walk picnic, then walk a route designed
by BLAGSS – the Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports
celebrate with a glass of bubbly at the post-walk
reception, where the Top Fundraiser and Top
The Stonewall 2012 Brighton Equality
Walk supports Stonewall’s Education For All
programme, which tackles homophobic bullying
and endeavours to make school an inclusive
environment for children from all families. YouGov
polling for the gay equality charity found that nine
in 10 secondary school teachers say children and
young people, regardless of their sexual orientation,
currently experience homophobic bullying, name
calling or harassment in their schools.
“No child deserves to be bullied at school – and
our Education For All programme plays a vital role
in stamping out anti-gay bullying,” says Catherine
Bosworth, Stonewall Director of Fundraising. “The
Brighton Equality Walk is a great opportunity to
relax with your friends and family during the bank
and as a family-friendly day event children are
welcome too.
“Every year we get lots of groups walking together,
INTERNATIONAL
WOMEN’S DAY
Is Thursday 8 March important
to you? It is to me – not because
it’s my birthday, but because it is
International Women’s Day. It’s easy
to forget how far we have come in
equality – there have been so many
advances for equality for lesbian and
bisexual women over the past 15
years that it’s hard to remember the
challenges that came before.
It’s now illegal to discriminate
against someone because of their
sex or because of their sexual
orientation. This covers recruitment,
employment terms and conditions,
pay and benefi ts, and promotion.
These simple pieces of legislation
have helped transform the lives of
hundreds of thousands of women
across the country.
But legislation alone isn’t enough
to ensure equality for women.
In order for us to enjoy true
equality, the schools our children
go to, the services we use and the
organisations we work for all need
to understand and value diversity. In
January Stonewall named the best
employers in Britain for lesbian, gay
and bisexual people. And it comes
as no surprise that among those
employers many are working across
equality issues.
So, as we mark International
Women’s Day, it is clear that there
is still much to do to make our
workplaces and public services,
which are now regulated through
legislation, fully inclusive.
and bisexual women at stonewall.org.uk
FERTILITY
CHOICES
Making the difficult decision of whether to use a fertility clinic
to have a family is only the start. Sophie Wilkinson talks us
through deciding on the best fertility process.
There are two main processes that fertility clinics
use to help women conceive: IUI and IVF. The
former, which stands for intrauterine insemination,
involves processing, or ‘washing’, the donated
sperm by separating it from the seminal fluid and
then injecting it directly into the woman’s uterus. If
a lesbian couple are seeking insemination and
there are no known reasons why one of them
should not be able to conceive naturally, then IUI
is a good option. Insemination happens at a time
when the patient is most likely to be ovulating –
around the 14th day of their menstrual cycle.
Venessa Smith, Donor Services Co-Ordinator
for the London Women’s Clinic, says of IUI: “It’s
really low maintenance – all they need to do is
pick their donor and then come into the clinic and
have their insemination done on the correct day.”
For more mature patients, or in cases where
repeated attempts at natural IUI haven’t worked,
then the London Women’s Clinic suggests
having what’s known as stimulation IUI. This is
where the ovaries are observed to find out the
perfect day for insemination to take place. The
observation is enabled by vaginal scans, and the
patient is given stimulatory drugs to help their
ovaries work a bit better.
The second process, IVF,
stands for in vitro fertilisation.
‘Vitro’ is derived from the
Latin ‘vitrium’, which means
glass. So IVF means ‘fertilised
in glass’, which is why children
resulting from this treatment
are often referred to as ‘test
tube babies’. In this process,
the sperm and egg are put
together in a petri dish before
being inserted into the uterus.
The procedure begins
with an ultrasound probe,
which has a fine needle
attached to it, being placed
inside the vagina. The needle is gently passed
through the vaginal wall into the nearest follicle in
an ovary, and fluid from the follicle is drained into
a small tube. This is done to every follicle in both
ovaries. The patient may be given pain-relieving
medicine beforehand, and the procedure usually
takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the
number of follicles to be drained.
An embryologist then examines the fluid
under a microscope, checking for eggs. Each egg is
put into a petri dish in a monitored incubator.
Sperm is added and, if an egg is fertilised, it is then
regularly analysed to judge its quality in order to
optimise pregnancy. If it is of good quality, the
embryo is transferred to the uterus one to six days
later, depending on its development. Medicine is
administered to help relaxation and minimise any
pain that might be felt during the procedure. The
cervix is cleaned of any mucus that could get in
the way of the embryo’s intended path, then a
thin plastic catheter is used to insert the best one
or two embryos into the uterus.
Due to advancement in reproductive technology,
IVF success rates are substantially better today than
they were just a few years ago.
the
stats
✔ For both
procedures,
it’s best for the
potential mother
to be under 30
years of age, as
this is when it is
most likely she
will conceive.
✔ IVF is the more
successful of the
two procedures
across all age
bands: It has a
17% success rate
for women aged
40-42 and a 34%
success rate for
women aged
38-39.
✔ The success
rates for IUI are
a lot lower – for
example, women
aged 40 and
above who use
donor sperm only
have a 6% chance
of a live birth
following each
straight women
over 40 who use
their partner’s
going cold turkey
The days of stalking your
single male friends with a jam
jar and turkey baster may
be drawing to an end. As
the British Surrogacy Centre
celebrates its fi rst birthday,
Danielle Carter speaks to
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, head
of social work at the agency,
about the ever increasing
options for lesbian, bisexual
and single women.
The BSC is famous worldwide as the
only European centre providing surrogacy
options for both straight, gay, single and
couples alike. However, the BSC is less
well known as a provider of sperm.
DC: Barrie, can you tell me how
the process of getting pregnant by
a sperm donor works?
BDB: It is actually surprisingly
straightforward. You meet or
telephone the centre, you pay your
£650 fee, and you tell us what kind of
donor you are looking for. After we
have compiled your wish list, we then
go ahead and search the database and
see who is available. Once we have
identifi ed at least three to fi ve
candidates, we send the list out. The
intended parents then look through
them and select who they want. The
cost is for two fresh samples.
DC: So who do you get the
sperm from?
BDB: Anyone can be a sperm donor,
as they say, there’s someone for
everyone! We have to accept a wide
range of looks because most couples
or singles who need a sperm donor
will want to match their own looks
and heritage as much as possible. It is
important to most people that their
baby has at least some of the nonbiological
parents’ resemblance.
DC: What information will I get
about the donor?
BDB: You get everything! A full
description, some baby photos, past
and current medical history on the
donor and their close family members.
We have a rich list of donors, ethnic
backgrounds that are very diverse
and hair/eye colours too.
DC: There are so many agencies
offering sperm, how can I be sure
I am not going to be infected with
an STI?
BDB: You are right, there are so many
agencies around Europe that are
offering this service. Many of them are
great, but many are just too risky to even
consider. As with any agency, copy-cat
facilities open up everywhere, and the
fact is you need to take responsibility for
what you are doing and do your
homework. At the BSC all candidates
will go through a full STD test twice
before they donate the sperm, and we
only allow a donor to donate two times
to our couples so that they do not have
lots of children scattered all over the UK.
DC: Some women are worried
about lesbi/bi-phobia when it comes
to dealing with agencies. Is the BSC
used to dealing with bi, gay and
single women?
BDB: Absolutely. We run a very inclusive
service here as the BSC is not only gay
owned, but 90% of the staff are gay too.
At the moment, 95% of requests that
come in for sperm donors are from the
LGB community.
DC: Can women speak to the BSC
for informal advice before they take
the plunge and become a parent?
BDB:Of course, the BSC doesn’t
charge for advice, and once you have
decided to go ahead the procedure is
simple. Everything is done on site. The
couple arrive, their chosen donor is in
the clinical area providing sperm and
once it is produced it is taken in to the
couple who are then left alone to do the
inseminations. This is done on day one
and day three of ovulation.
DC: How much does it cost?
BDB: Total costs are around £650-£1,000.
GIRLS
ON FILM
It’s almost that time when the Southbank becomes
a queer haven and you can’t move for lesbians. Yup,
it’s the 26th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival,
and to celebrate Theresa Heath spoke to some
festival fi lmmakers to fi nd out just what makes the
event the most wonderful time of the gay year.
5 Name: Kanchi Wichmann, 37
Lives: North London
Film: Break My Fall (out on Peccadillo), LLGFF 2010
Synopsis: Liza and Sally are girlfriends and band mates who ignore
the fact that their relationship is on the rocks. When things come to
a head in the days leading up to Liza’s 25th birthday, they are forced
to make some big decisions.
Aims: “I wanted to make a British fi lm that shows my world and the
lives of people around me.”
Benefi ts/challenges: “There is so much material out there – we
have a lot to say because for so long our stories have been
marginalised and ignored. When we do get to tell our stories, there is
a whole amazing infrastructure through festivals, distribution and
audiences. On the fl ip side, it’s hard to be taken seriously as a
fi lmmaker outside of that niche.”
In the pipeline: “I am producing a documentary on the lives of
Kurdish male sex-workers in Istanbul, which we will be shooting in
the summer.”
“
WE HAVE A LOT
TO SAY BECAUSE
5 Name: Pratibha Parmar
Lives: London/San Francisco
Film: Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth, 2012
Synopsis: The fi lm is a feature documentary on Alice Walker, the
Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple. It looks at key
moments in the life of an artist, a self-confessed renegade and outlaw.
Aims: “To follow her extraordinary journey from a childhood of
poverty and racist violence, through to the release of a groundbreaking
and wildly successful novel.”
Benefits/challenges: “I see myself primarily as a fi lmmaker, and all
my other identities shape the lens through which I make my fi lms.”
In the pipeline: “To fi nish this fi lm.”
Name: Faryal, 31
Lives: South London
Film: What You Looking At?, 2012
Synopsis: Short fi lm. A drag queen and a woman in a burkha get
stuck in a lift with surprising results.
Aims: “I’m interested in delving into the rich tapestry of multicultural
London, bringing together characters who wouldn’t usually meet.”
Benefits/challenges: “I am open to many different stories and so
don’t like labels. For me, the creative challenge is how to make
evocative and original fi lms. I am lucky to have an insight into many
diverse communities for inspiration. The other challenge is how to get
your fi lm made. You have to be a hustler and be on the lookout for
contacts and possibilities. Funding is not easy to come by, and there is
an increasing need to DIY. There is a culture to ‘micro budget’
emerging among independent fi lm makers, which is inspiring.”
In the pipeline: “I want to develop the characters of WYLA into a
feature-length fi lm.”
3 Names: Jackie Nunn, Angie West, 51 and 52 respectively
Live: South London
Film: Childs Play, 2012
Synopsis: Three-minute short fi lm featuring children and young
people aged three-22, who speak about what ‘gay’ means to them.
Aims: “This is our fi rst effort, and we wanted to show that
prejudices around the ‘gay’ topic start very early.”
Benefi ts/challenges: “The children wouldn’t cough up! You’d
be having a conversation with them three weeks previously,
then you’d put the camera on them and hope they’d say the
same sort of thing, and they wouldn’t. On a positive note, what
we did fi nd was that people are really willing to help. People
really got involved.”
In the pipeline: “We are going to be making a fi lm about Turkish
lesbians. We want to make fi lms the whole time now.”
MAKING
A POSITIVE
DIFFERENCE
The competition this year for the First Time Buyer [magazine]
Readers’ Awards was very high, but one entry that has been
shortlisted in both the best small development and most
eco-aware project categories really stood out – the St John’s
development built by LHA-ASRA Group – which ticks all the
boxes for its cutting edge eco-friendly technology, impressive
design and its location in beautiful, leafy, tranquil and safe surroundings
off the beaten track
It’s a case of the best of both worlds when it comes to the St
John’s development in Wembley, which is tucked away in a
lovely leafy setting but is close to London’s city centre.
The scheme includes 12 apartments and eight houses that
have been designed to fit in well with the local architecture.
Using traditional materials, including reconstituted stone and
flint cladding, the development blends in perfectly with the Sir
George Gilbert Scott Grade II listed church and the new
community hall that LHA-ASRA Group has built on the site.
The hall will be widely used for the local community,
including a mum and toddler club, information technology
suite, youth cafe and centre, an over-50s lunch club, plus
meeting rooms for community groups and local businesses.
The shared ownership (part buy, part rent) homes are
very affordable for anyone who wants to get a foot on the
ladder. Shared ownership gives buyers the chance to
purchase as little as a 25% share in a property and pay the
rest in the form of subsidised rent. As time goes by, buyers
can purchase more shares if they wish, so that they can
eventually own 100% of the property and have a home for
life. Buying more shares is known as staircasing. The full
market value for a one bedroom apartment is £180,000
and a two bedroom apartment costs £235,000.
home&living
britain’s greenest vicarage
Following the Church of England’s pledge that all new
vicarages built in London should be carbon neutral, LHA-
ASRA Group pulled out all the stops when it built St John’s
church and vicarage to an impressive Level 6 of the
government’s code for sustainable homes.
The modest vicarage offers high sustainability credentials,
making it very ‘green’. It includes solar panels, controlled water
usage, rainwater harvesting, and reinvestment from the Fee In
Tariff, which will help with the running costs of the vicarage
and the community centre. Not only will the vicar benefit, the
20 homes on the site have also achieved a Level 4, and they
benefit from heat-saving technology. This will reduce carbon
footprints and save on energy bills.
Not only will the residents take advantage of living in such
eco-friendly homes, they will also benefit from being
surrounded by a ready-made community, which is most
unusual considering its close proximity to central London. Living
so near to the church means it’s the perfect safe location with
many different family groups right on the doorstep, creating the
ideal neighbourhood in which to live happily and securely.
Situated in the heart of Wembley, the area is set to receive
heavy investment and redevelopment over the next 10 years.
An up-and-coming hot spot with an array of amenities and an
excellent choice of transport facilities right on the doorstep,
it’s certainly set to become an important place on the map.
EXTREME
DIETS
Many of us are avid gym-goers,
but the growing pressure for
us to be slimmer and look
fi tter has led to a recent
trend among lesbians to
binge diet. Chloe Marshall
looks at the worrying
pressure for weight loss and
the extreme diets that go with it.
Take a look at the famous, gorgeous bi and
lesbian ladies who are put on a pedestal: svelte
Portia de Rossi, toned Megan Fox and super-slim
Angelina Jolie. When quizzed about their methods
of weight loss, female celebs often cite healthy
examples, such as pilates, yoga and the help
of a wonderful personal trainer. But how did
Renée Zellweger really manage to go from a
comfortably curvy Bridget Jones to a scarily
skinny starlet in time for the fi lm’s debut? More
recently, Victoria Beckham was photographed
in lingerie while sporting a washboard tummy
to rival her husband’s, just fi ve months after
giving birth. It’s worth remembering that most
photos of stars are professionally edited, using
Photoshop trickery that conveniently shaves
inches off of bellies and bums.
The pages of dieting tips in women’s magazines
are nothing new, but the growing trend for
lesbians to look a certain way means that many
of us are aspiring to a thinner, albeit more toned,
physique, while curvy girls are sadly being left
out in the cold. A busy lifestyle coupled with a
desire for quick results means that some of us
are prepared to forego eating anything for a few
days, with a constant image of that elusive fl at
stomach in mind. The ‘no pain, no gain’ attitude
may work for exercise, but when it comes to a
lack of food, your body will feel uncomfortable
with good reason. Since your body expects you
to eat, the stomach acids will build up and lead
to painful hunger pangs that can be damaging
to the digestive system. Ultimately, going on a
fast will only get rid of excess fl uid, meaning that
any visible results are short term and superfi cial.
When your body is being starved, it actually
holds on to as much fat as it can to survive!
Susie Roman, of National Eating Disorders, tells
g3: “There are tons of fad diets promising better
health through quick, dramatic weight loss, but
95% of dieters regain the weight, then repeat the
cycle, wreaking havoc on the body.” Susie warns
that extreme dieting can even lead to bulimia
and anorexia: “Thirty-fi ve per cent of dieters
progress to pathological dieting, and of those,
25% progress to eating disorders. A 2005 study
found that girls who diet frequently are 12 times
more likely to end up binge eating.”
Being fi t doesn’t mean being skinny, and for
many of us, trying to be thin means living an
unhealthy lifestyle. Far more attractive is the
woman who lives comfortably in her natural
size, with body confi dence to boot. Crash dieting
should never replace a healthy, balanced diet,
even in our loneliest moments of singledom,
when appearance seems to matter the most.
Remember, you are your harshest critic; if you’re
feeling self-conscious about your body, think for a
moment about your ideal woman – fuller fi gured
is probably far sexier than insecurely underweight.
Compare Kate Winslet to Paris Hilton. Exactly.
If you’ve got some residual Christmas pudding
weight that you’re desperate to lose, then a little
slimming down is best done with a healthy dose
of common sense. Mary George, of Beating
Eating Disorders, advises g3 that: “A balanced
diet accompanied by appropriate exercise is the
best solution to long-term weight loss.” If you
enjoy exercise, then fuel it. After all, beefed-up
beauties like Jodie Marsh and Madonna didn’t get
there without piling on the protein.
(HEAD)
BANGIN’
BEIRUT
Lebanon is barely on the map for travellers, let alone gay
travellers, but the former war-torn capital has emerged as a
hedonistic hotspot in the Middle East that will make you thirsty
for more, writes Jade Bremner.
“Are you gay,” I ask a Lebanese woman with an
über cool haircut. I’m in BO18, a bohemian
nightclub underneath a car park, and it’s 6am. “I’m
bi,” she says, “but who isn’t?” She is one of many
open-minded, unpretentious and humblingly
friendly people I met during a weekend trip to the
city. At 7am, she invites my girlfriend and me to a
gay bar named Milk the following night.
Most of Beirut’s trilingual population has grown up
around gunfi re and bombs, and although it’s over
20 years since the Lebanese civil war and a safe
place to visit, armed soldiers still protect the streets,
and Beirutis party like it’s their last night on earth.
The country lies between the Mediterranean
Sea and Syria – a strict Muslim country where
homosexual behaviour is a criminal offence
(and the law is strictly enforced). Although
homosexuality is offi cially illegal in Beirut, the LGB
community has been socially accepted. Rather
than disturb the peace, Beirutis have embraced
their sexuality: in Time Out Beirut’s February 2012
edition (the sex issue), it reported that over
50% of the people interviewed for its sex survey
had kissed someone of the same sex, a hugely
promising statistic for the region.
The city’s liberal nature is fused with incredible
nightlife (including a fi stful of gay bars) that takes
place in inventive venues, such as the Music Hall –
a cabaret-esque theatre where guests are
encouraged to dance on the tables – the arty
Godot bar in Beirut’s European Germmayze area,
and the rooftop SkyBar where 2,000+ revellers
throw shapes into the night.
By day, visitors explore 5,000 years of history amid
a labyrinth of lanes. Here you’ll fi nd ancient tombs,
French townhouses, Roman ruins and striking
Ottoman architecture, mish-mashed with creative
graffi ti and beautiful mosques sitting shoulder to
shoulder with historic churches.
At every corner you can fi ll your belly with culinary
treats of the Mediterranean, French and Middle
Eastern variety. Poised in my memory forever will
be the pizza fresh from Margherita’s stone oven,
the tender fresh sea food from Le Gray’s trendy hotel
and the lashings of humous and bread from Abdel
Wahab el-Inglizi, set in a grand old Ottoman house.
scattered around for all
those wishing to deliver their
heart’s sentiments in a
sugary manner. Dark
chocolates were given out
too for those with a sweet
tooth, but the main event of
the night was the ‘Date the
staff auction’ – the chance to
bid for your favourite ‘Candy
Girl’, presided over by
auctioneer for the night,
Sandra D. As the auction
started the main stage fi lled
with an excited buzz, arms
were thrown and frantically
waved around in the air and
bidding wars took place. The
lucky winners were taken
upstairs where their date sat
waiting with a bottle of bubbly.
Ruby Tuesday runs every
Tuesday in the heart of Soho.
It’s the place to head to for a
friendly welcome, drink offers,
dance fl oor and great music.
ATHENA
Psychosocial, 1-2 Morley Street, Brighton BN2 9RA
Friday 10 Feb
Brighton girlies braved the
cold for the launch of the
new alternative lesbian-only
night, Athena. The monthly
night kicked off with a Pro Vs
Anti-Valentine’s theme and
took over all three fl oors of
Brighton’s newly re-opened
Psychosocial. ‘Heaven’ is
upstairs with funk, soul and
disco mixed with trash 80s
rock spun by Dame Amy
Mazing. Downstairs in the
aptly named ‘Hell’ was
headlining DJ Rachel Harvey
playing R&B, Bhangra &
House. The basement held
the hidden market, food,
clothes and sex toys from
Twisted Playtime. Next
Athena is 2 March. Tickets
£7/Earlybird £6 from the
Marlborough, 4 Princes
doubt that the future
looks highly promising. Looking
on the bright side of life is the best
advice to follow. This optimism could
push a partner, relative or neighbour
into turning their back on what’s
failed in the past and instead look to
the future. So don’t keep yourself to
yourself this week, Gemini. Get out
and spread a little sunshine.
At last you are
experiencing the harmony you have
been craving for. Where your domestic
life is concerned, there is less confl ict,
especially if a younger person has
been causing all the upset. Cupid will
take over almost as soon as you enter
a function that brings many likeminded
people together. An admirer’s
advances will be returned by you, and
the days ahead will pass in a whirl!
“Oooh,” you might occasionally say
in March, “I feel as mad as a March
hare!” But do you really know what
you’re saying? Of course not, and that
is why you fi nd yourself reading my
wise words. It being March, I thought I
would turn to the origin of the supposed
mad March hare. The nutty genus
lepus is, of course, a lesbian invention.
Many years ago, lesbians kept hares as
pets. They were docile, friendly
The squander bug could
bite a close friend, but
don’t allow this to affect
your own handling of cash. Also,
don’t make comments about a
relationship issue that could be taken
as criticism. Let your intuition guide
you in personal affairs. Someone
close may need a reassuring word.
You need to push feelings aside and
be objective if you are to work through
a complex relationship problem.
22 June - 23 July
A friend or acquaintance
has been a pain in the neck
lately, but their mood
seems to have lifted. In fact, there
should be plenty to enjoy socially, and
they’re the ones with all the best
suggestions. Deal with duties as soon
as possible so you have plenty of time
to let your hair down with some lively
and entertaining company. Sometimes
you look at your partner and just feel
you’re the luckiest person on earth!
You and someone close
have a breakthrough if
you’ve been at loggerheads lately.
Currently, the home fi res warm any
cold parts of your heart! If romance
has been underwhelming of late, be
prepared to meet a situation that
introduces you to some unusual yet
interesting people with an open
mind. On a broader scale, pay
attention to detail if you’re taking or
passing on messages for a third party.
creatures, who particularly favoured
the company of female couples. You
would often hear: “Claude, my hare, is
having his toenails cut today.” Or
“Melissa, my lovely hare, is being
groomed today.” Yes, lesbians liked
hares and liked to brag about them.
That is, except in March, the breeding
season, when the male hare is often
seen partaking in what seems to be a
boxing match, with both male and
aries
21 Mar - 20 Apr
It’s not what others
say that’s important
but the way they say
it. Preoccupation with day-to-day
routines could lead you to miss a hint
from someone close that they need
help with a problem. If you don’t pick
up on this, they may start to think
you don’t care, so pay attention!
Single? Pause before giving the extra
set of keys away. Are you trusting
someone too quickly?
24 July - 23 Aug
If there’s one thing you can’t
stand, it’s when people tell
you what to do. Unfortunately, due to
circumstances you currently fi nd
yourself in, you may have no choice
but to abide by someone else’s
wishes! Trying to make it diffi cult for
others will only make it worse for you.
Look on this as a cosmic test on how
you are able to follow as well as lead. If
you pass, there could be great rewards
from the lessons learned this week.
23 Nov - 21 Dec
You may not know
what to expect right
now, but your days should even out
and bring a lot to be pleased about.
Your partner and friends would like to
see more of you, but you’re occupied
with other matters and romance must
take a back seat. Aim to get proper
advice regarding a health concern,
rather than listen to old wives’ tales. In
your love life, passion plays a major
role in your success over a weekend.
female friends. This
was all too much for peaceloving
lesbians, and so the
bragging came to an abrupt halt until
about July, when things started to calm
down. Now you might think this is
nonsense, contrived to fi t March’s
Inventors column of this much lauded
magazine. But think again, dear lesbian.
When did you last hear one of your
friends brag about their hare? Exactly.
Certain diffi cult events
and situations are now
reaching a conclusion and
the light at the end of the tunnel will
make such a difference to your mood
and outlook. Don’t get involved with
brash and argumentative people, and
make it your intention to relax as
much as possible. Don’t feel nervous
about meeting new people. Your
charm and sense of humour are
enough to attract admirers and lovers.
24 Aug - 23 Sept
Unless you can fake
confi dence, it would be
better to avoid situations that make
you nervous and uncomfortable.
Not everyone is as kind as you are,
and if a certain malicious person
senses your uncertainty, they will use
this to their advantage. Equally,
unless you can take as good as you
give, it would be better to keep your
opinions about other people’s work
or actions to yourself.
If you’re waiting for important
information, don’t let your
eagerness to act on it distract you
from double checking its accuracy. A
new love affair seems to be slow in
getting started, but don’t worry,
relationships that take time to
develop are more likely to last. If you
are working, you will achieve more if
you deal with the job in hand on your
own. Some well meaning advice
could actually slow you down.
