SAN DIEGUITO YOUTH SOFTBALL
All-Star Team Selection Process & Commitment
San Dieguito Youth Softball chooses the players for its tournament/all-star teams based on a
tryout where coaches judge the young ladies on specific skills. A player may attend only one
tryout per ASA rules.
Any player in a division may try out for all-stars. SDYS modified its rules to allow a player who
competes in a higher recreational division to “drop down” to their appropriate age division for
all-stars. For example, a player is on a 12U rec team but, based on her age, can try out for the
10U all-star team. It is SDYS’ policy to field as many all-star/tournament teams as possible,
based on the number of players trying out, their skills to compete in their respective division, and
the commitment of coaches.
During the tryout, two representatives from each recreational team will “score” players on
specific skills. The top eight scoring players automatically make the team. The all-star coach
then chooses the final four to six players. All-star teams are limited to 16 players by ASA rules;
SDYS usually fields teams of 12 to 14 players.
All-star teams can not have any tryouts or practices until May 1, per ASA rules. Any practice
done prior to May 1 is a violation of ASA rules and will result in the expulsion of the team and
the suspension of its coaches.
SDYS teams will plan on competing in the following tournaments:
Rancho Roundup May 18-20 Rancho Trabuco
Memorial Day Classic May 25-28 San Dieguito
Summertime Warm-up June 1-3 San Marcos
Cool Breeze Tournament June 7-10 Peninsula
Mountain Top Tournament June 22-24 Big Bear
District Championships June 29 – July 1 Clairemont
State Championships July 13-15 (If advance from Districts)
Practice and Game Commitment Terms
To play for a tournament/all-star team is an honor. Players are expected to make an extra
commitment to success. Teams practice for two hours (minimum) at least three times a week
once the recreational season concludes. Some practices, especially in the beginning, may go
longer. Tournament/all-star teams can also play up to 6 games in a weekend. SDYS participates
in a lot of tournaments to prepare our teams for the District Qualifier All-Star tournament. It is
very important that all girls commit to their team and to the tournaments. It is up to the head allstar
coach whether or not a girl can miss a full tournament or not, but no girl is allowed to miss
the District Tournament and remain on the team.
Also note that playing time and positions is solely up to the all-star coach.

My daughter and I agree to the San Dieguito Youth Softball Practice and Game Commitment
terms and will be participating in the SDYS All-Star tryouts. My daughter will also be
committing to the District Qualifier Tournament and if permits will go on to State and
National Tournament.
