Never Back Down Toy Drive is
10-for-10 in anniversary year
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
It’s been 10 years since
their own No. 10 was taken
too soon, but the Duggan
family continues to
honor the memory of their
son Sean through the annual
Never Back Down Toy
Drive on Aug. 7 — Sean’s
birthday.
This year marks the tenth
year of the drive, held the
day Sean would be turning
20. Instead, the Sean Duggan
Foundation hopes to
collect more than 1,000 toys
for children fighting similar
battles to Sean’s.
“In the community, it’s
something that everyone
looks forward to participating
in, and it’s a way to help
children currently in the
situation that we found ourselves
in 10 years ago,” said
Sean’s father, John Duggan.
He said there are more
people in the community
The Never Back Down Toy
Drive began in 2009 and
honors Sean Duggan, who
died of cancer that year
when he was 10 years old.
than many realize who are
currently struggling with
childhood cancer.
“It’s just a way to show
support for everybody that’s
been affected by cancer and
to try to help the children,
specifically, that are currently
trying to get well,”
Duggan said.
While many cancer organizations
strive to collect
funds for research, Duggan
said the main purpose
of the toy drive is to make
an immediate impact on
children’s lives, which is
something research money
cannot do.
Orland Park man
dead after crash in
Frankfort Township
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
An Orland Park man died
July 10 after his vehicle
ended up in a ditch late in
the evening of July 9 on the
north side of LaPorte Road
in Mokena, according to a
press release from the Will
County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael B. Anderson, 45,
was transported to Silver
Cross Hospital’s emergency
room, where he was pronounced
deceased at 12:02
a.m. July 10, according to a
press release issued the same
day by the Will County Coroner’s
Office.
An autopsy performed that
day noted the cause of death
as multiple injuries due to a
single-vehicle crash at La-
Porte Road and 114th Place
in Frankfort Township, according
to the Coroner’s
Office. The final manner of
death is to be determined
by the coroner after toxicology
and medical reports are
completed, according to the
release.
Frankfort police were
following a vehicle they attempted
to stop for speeding,
according to the release
from the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies reportedly
attempted to assist; however,
Frankfort police advised that
they were no longer following
the vehicle but gave the
description as a white Chevy
Impala.
While on routine patrol
in the area of Route 30 and
Schoolhouse Road, a deputy
reportedly spotted the offending
vehicle heading
westbound on Route 30. The
deputy turned on his emergency
lights, but the driver,
From July 10
later identified as Anderson,
refused to stop, according to
the release. Anderson reportedly
continued northbound
on Schoolhouse approaching
Francis Road, attempted
to turn west onto Francis
but spun out and continued
eastbound on Francis. The
deputy then turned off his
emergency lights, stopped
following the driver and
cleared the stop, police said.
A short time later, a different
sheriff’s deputy observed
a vehicle wrecked in
the ditch on the north side
of LaPorte Road, near East
Brightway Road in Mokena,
according to the Sheriff’s
Office. The report states that
the Mokena Fire Protection
District arrived on scene and
extricated Anderson from
the vehicle.
Initial reports indicate
that Anderson was traveling
westbound on LaPorte when
he lost control of his vehicle
while crossing the railroad
tracks. The vehicle struck a
guardrail on the north side of
LaPorte and broke free from
its supports, and the vehicle
came to rest in the ditch, police
said.
According to the report,
open alcohol was found in
the Chevy Impala at the time
of the accident. Anderson
had active warrants out of
Cook County for larceny and
violating probation.
The Chevy Impala was
not Anderson’s vehicle, according
to police.
Summit Hill D161 Board of Education
Board members prepare for 2018-2019 school year
Caitlin Fyfe
Freelance Reporter
The Summit Hill D161
Board of Education unanimously
voted July 11 to approve
goals for the upcoming
school year, in addition
to discussing a preliminary
2018-19 District budget,
appointing members of a
K-12 district feasibility
committee and approving
the employment of a new
principal for Dr. Julian Rogus
School.
The appointed board
members of the feasibility
committee — David Faber,
Jim Martin, and Board President
Rich Marron — will
investigate the possibility
of transforming D161 into a
K-12 district.
Along with the board
members, the selected
Police reports
Round it Up
A brief recap of other items discussed at the July 11
D161 meeting:
• The updated enrollment report disclosed a total of
2,266 registered kindergarten students, estimating
18-22 children per classroom.
• Enrollment trends from 2015-16 highlighted an
enrollment fluctuation in D161 at Walker Elementary
School and Summit Hill Junior High.
• Additions made to the preliminary budget revealed
the upcoming school year is comparable to the
previous year, aside from the transportation fund.
• Future meetings were scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 8
and Aug. 22 at the Mary Drew Administration Center.
committee members will
serve as a segue between
the community and the
board. However, due to
the absence of Martin,
the committee meeting
was postponed for next
week, where the appointed
members will be given more
information.
“We will post that to the
website [summithill.org]
as soon as we have the exact
date and time,” Marron
said.
Julian Rogus's newly appointed
principal, Colin
Bradley, will succeed Michael
Ruffalo at the school.
Bradley previously served
as the assistant principal at
Summit Hill Junior High
School.
As well as making adjustments,
the board also
reinforced the S.M.A.R.T.
Goals Program — an acronym
for specific, measurable,
attainable, realistic,
and timely — as a foundation
for school improvement
in an array of areas.
“I appreciate that we’re
addressing bullying to promote
a safe-learning environment
because I think
that's still very important
and will continue as times
change,” Board Vice President
Stacey Borgens said.
Woman charged with aggravated battery
A California woman faces
multiple misdemeanor criminal
charges after allegedly
trespassing and kicking a
police officer on July 10, according
to Frankfort Deputy
Police Chief Kevin Keegan.
Janelle E. Halbrook, 23,
of 9846 Bartley Ave. in
Santa Fe Springs, Calif., was
charged with aggravated
battery to a police officer,
resisting arrest and criminal
trespass to a residence.
In an email, Keegan reported
officers were called
to a disturbance in the 100
block of Pacific Street involving
a homeowner who
wanted Halbrook removed
from the property.
He stated officers repeatedly
asked Halbrook to leave
willingly, but she refused to
do so, and when they told
her she was under arrest for
trespassing, Halbrook reportedly
would not put her
hands behind her back, continued
to pull her arms away
and kicked the sergeant on
scene, knocking him to the
ground.
Halbrook was allegedly
intoxicated during the incident,
Keegan said.
July 10
• Wan L. Doby, 20, of 225
Early St. in Park Forest, was
cited for allegedly driving
with a suspended license.
• Damage was reported to a
vehicle in the 9100 block of
Holland Harbor Circle.
July 8
• Miscellaneous items were
reported stolen from an unsecured
vehicle in the 21400
block of English Circle between
July 5 and July 8.
• Randy L. Sawyer, 31, of
Frankfort therapeutic riding center assists people with disabilities
Cynthia Freeman
Editorial intern
Animals can often provide
an invaluable source of
comfort and support, and for
individuals with disabilities,
horse-based therapeutic options
can be especially lifechanging.
At the Sojourn Therapeutic
Riding and Equine Assisted
Learning Center in
Frankfort, therapeutic methods
consist of equine-assisted
activities and therapeutic
riding. These techniques are
designed to help riders with
disabilities improve their
cognitive, physical, emotional
and social well-being,
all while enhancing their
lives through the power of
the horse.
This month, Sojourn
opened its doors to the public
to showcase what it has
to offer. The ribbon-cutting
and open house, held from
5-7 p.m. July 11, allowed
visitors to walk around the
facilities, see the horses and
learn more about the company's
work.
Barbara Mulry, Sojourn's
executive director, started
the company about 12
years ago with her own two
horses. Her background in
special education teaching,
combined with having an
Horses at the riding center help people with disabilities
improve their physical, social, emotional and mental
well-being.
Delaney Barnes (middle), of Oak Forest, is lifted onto a horse July 11 at the Sojourn
autistic brother, has helped
Mulry acquire a sweet spot
for helping individuals with
disabilities.
After years as a successful
therapeutic riding center, the
facility has accumulated 12
therapeutic horses for individuals
to ride and recently
added a lift for people with
paralysis.
Many organizations have
contributed financially to
Sojourn throughout the
years, including the Christopher
and Dana Reeve
Foundation. Without a grant
donation from the foundation,
which helped fund the
paralysis lift, children and
adults with paralysis would
have a much more difficult
time getting atop their
horse.
Although Sojourn is a facility
dedicated to therapeutic
riding and equine-assisted
learning, it also focuses
a good amount of time on
non-verbal and verbal communication
lessons. Participating
riders have various
skill levels; several children
are already riding independently,
while some need the
assistance of a spotter and
others require full support.
The staff at Sojourn TRC
have made the effort to make
sure more skills are taught
than just riding a horse. With
assigned horses, the children
can develop a connection
and relationship with the animals,
as well as really feel
like the horse they are riding
is their horse.
“Another thing we really
try to focus on is having the
child have a lot of rhythm,
have a lot of rhythmic movement,
and then that will help
the child even with balance,"
Mulry said. "Because balance
is very often an issue
for the kids as well."
She also noted, “A rhythm
is very important for relaxation.”
Mulry added that though
relaxation is a key concept
in therapeutic strategies, doing
sports alone is very important
for brain activity. For
the body to be actively doing
something, the brain must
focus on the task at hand,
which comprehensively affects
the individual in a positive
way.
“I think that working with
animals in particular is very
beneficial for all children
and there are very few animals
that will allow you on
their backs and I think that’s
a trust issue," Mulry said.
"So, for children to have that
trust with an animal that’s
actually carrying the child,
I think that that’s a phenomenal
feeling too."
Lincoln-Way East students support LWE Boosters program through car wash
fundraiser
Frankfort firefighter and paramedic Dave Scanlan keeps Lincoln-Way East students cool
June 30 on one of the hottest days of the year during a fundraiser car wash. Members
of the Lincoln Way East choir, band and Madrigals groups volunteered their time to
wash cars in order to raise funds for the Lincoln-Way East Boosters. Photos by Mary
TOYS
From Page 3
“With our circumstance
with our son, it always made
him happy to get a toy no
matter what stage of treatment
he was in,” Duggan
said. “A toy is something
that every child, no matter
what situation they’re facing,
can receive some type
of happiness from, and we
can directly, positively impact
their lives.”
Each year, he said, the donations
have increased, but
last year’s toy drive brought
in more than 1,700 toys, a
goal Duggan said he and his
wife, Jill, could never have
imagined possible.
“I believe we’ve surpassed
the 10,000 toy mark
at this point, which is a
number that when we started
out we thought it would
be great if we could collect
a few hundred toys a year,”
he said.
Individuals and businesses
in the community have
banded together for the
cause throughout the years,
including local businesses
that volunteer to be dropoff
locations. This year,
those drop-off locations are
Peace Community Church
in Frankfort and Zach’s On
Tap in Palos Heights.
Duggan said the families
at Triple R Child Care
of Mokena have also been
huge supporters of the toy
drive throughout the years.
This year has the potential
to be especially meaningful
to the Duggan family. The
No. 10 holds a special place
in their hearts and lives.
“It was [Sean’s] number,
it was his thing,” Duggan
said. So this being the 10th
year marks an important anniversary
for us.”
The drive will collect
new, unwrapped toys appropriate
for children in a range
of ages from newborn to
high school-aged children.
Once collected, the toys will
be distributed to children on
the oncology floor at Ann &
Robert H. Lurie Children’s
Hospital of Chicago.
“No toy is too small of
a donation,” Duggan said.
“Everything is appreciated
by these children at the hospital.”
Fort Frankfort Adventures Day Camp offers summer of fun
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
Nearly 50 excited thirdgraders
walked as orderly
as they could into Chelsea
Middle School the morning
of July 13.
Already dressed in swim
attire, the group had to eat
its lunch quickly, since the
highlight of the week coming
up soon: a trip to the
water park. The children
anxiously ate their food as
they talked about their upcoming
afternoon of fun,
ending another great week
of day camp.
Fort Frankfort Adventures
Summer Day Camp is
back for its fifth year; and
five weeks into the summer
session, it’s the camp's biggest
and busiest summer yet.
Located at Commissioners
Park in Frankfort, the camp
is designed for children entering
first- through fifthgrade
this upcoming school
year. It operates from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Monday through
Friday, with a before and
after care option available.
A partnership between
the Frankfort Park District
and Frankfort School District
157-C allows for the
camp to use Chelsea Middle
School as a facility for the
camp’s before and after
care, as well as a refuge during
inclement weather.
The camp runs for eight
weeks starting June 11 and
runs through the week of
Aug. 3. Each week has a
different theme, and the
activities and field trips are
structured around it. Prior
themes included “Animal
Planet” and a trip to the
Morton Arboretum, as well
as “Olympic Games” with
a trip to Gizmo’s in Orland
Park. This week’s theme
was “Holiday Fun” and included
a trip to Santa’s Village.
Stephanie Furlong, 23, of
Frankfort, is in her fourth
summer as a counselor at
Fort Frankfort. Since she
works as a teacher the rest
of the year, she enjoys the
opportunity to head to camp
for the summer.
“I’m a teacher, so I like
working with kids, and I
like being with the kids in
the summer," she said. "I
think [camp] is really enjoyable,
and offers a different
dynamic than the classroom.
It's a fun thing to be a
part of.”
Furlong’s fellow counselor
Grace Brazzale, 23,
The Frankfort Park District’s
on a Long Day 5K run/walk
was held 7 p.m. June 20 at
Main Park, 400 W. Nebraska
St. in Frankfort. This year’s
run had 390 registered runners.
Ben Hedges, 22, of Wilmington,
was the first place
overall male winner with a
time of 17 minuntes, 11.1
seconds and Julie Crutchfield,
the first place overall female
winner with a time of
the staff, board members
and volunteers who helped
at the Short Run on a Long
a success. Thank you to the
District. Thank you to
Chip Timing by T & H Timing.
Sponsorship is available
for next year’s 2019 run.
d161
From Page 4
tion, the board previously
approved and recognized
the existence of hazardous
transportation routes,
a series of streets or intersections
where children
are within 1.5 miles of the
school and would walk if
not for the existence of
hazardous roadways, which
includes 80th Avenue,
North Avenue, and 88th
Avenue.
“We approve this and it
allows us to apply for funding
from the State of Illinois
for some portion of the
transportation fund,” Marron
said.
Marron also provided the
board with updates on the
intergovernmental agreement
with Union School
District 81 concerning the
preparation of meals under
the National School Lunch
Program beginning the first
day of school.
“Again, this intergovernmental
agreement is with
of New Lenox, is studying
education and is utilizing
those skills this summer at
camp.
“I'm going to school for
teaching right now, and I
work in a school during
the school year, so this is
just a lot of fun,” Brazzale
said.
While the Frankfort Park
District doesn’t have its
own pool, that doesn’t keep
these campers out of the
water. Thanks to the partnerships
formed with the
Village of Orland Park and
the Tinley Park Park District,
campers travel via bus
to Centennial Park Pool in
Orland Park or White Water
Canyon in Tinley Park multiple
times a week.
“The camp tries to swim
twice a week,” said Gina
Hasset, executive director
for the Frankfort Park
District. “It's challenging
because we don't have our
own pool in town, so they
are traveling to get to water.
It certainly speaks volumes
though; one of the staples of
summer for kids is getting
into the pool.”
One camper was anxious
for the afternoon’s outing
to White Water Canyon, as
swimming was his favorite
activity at Fort Frankfort.
When asked how many
times he’s been swimming
this summer, he smiled as
he said, “way too many.”
Hasset said she believes
Fort Frankfort Adventure
Camp allows children to be
children during the summer
and make the most out of
essential leisure time.
“Leisure time is so important
that we sometimes
Union School D81; however,
they do not supply any
services to D161," Marron
said. "The Union does not
profit from this agreement, it
is simply a pass-through that
allows us to use the National
School Lunch Program to
supply lunches within the
nutritional guidelines that
we have to follow in order
to get reimbursed from the
Federal Government.”
forget about it," Hasset said.
"We have more leisure time
than you do work time or
school time, but we don’t
always realize it’s there. I
love it when I visit, and I see
they're tie-dyeing or playing
kickball, or even just having
relaxed social time with
one another; that although
they’re not in school, they're
not inside playing video
games. It’s just so great to
see that can still happen in
this day where were driven
by technology.”
Parents still interested
in enrolling their child in
camp can register their child
for the upcoming week one
week prior, if space is available.
Registration must
be done in person at the
Founders Community Center.
Visit frankfortparks.org
Further review of Lincoln-Way
District 843 was
previously cut short due
to a tornado warning in
Frankfort on June 26. All
administrative reports were
postponed attributable to the
absence of a representative
but Marron stated, “No action
was made because there
was nothing that required
attention, which is always
good news.”
The frankfort station’s
Standout Student
Sponsored by Marquette Bank
I know they will all become
role models for others
through their great successes
in the future.
Sydney Koehne,
Lincoln-Way East
High School senior
Sydney Koehne was chosen as
this week’s Standout Student
for her academic excellence
What is one essential you
must have when studying?
I have to have quiet, or
else I get distracted, and notecards.
Making notecards
helps me remember material
better.
What do you like to do
when not in school or
studying?
I like to play bass, read,
and listen to music. I’m
also involved in a lot of extracurricular
activities like
stage crew, Scholastic Bowl
and Key Club.
What is your dream job and
why?
I’m not sure exactly what
career I want, but I’m going
to major in neuroscience
and chemistry. I hope to be
able to do research in those
fields.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
I’ve been really interested
in entomology, the study of
insects, since I was 7 years
old.
Whom do you look up to
and why?
I look up to all of my
friends who are amazingly
smart and constantly challenge
and encourage me
to be the best I can be. My
friends have taught me so
much over the years, and
What do you keep under
your bed?
Not much, aside from
some extra blankets and pillows.
Who is your favorite
teacher and why?
Madame Goetsch is my
favorite teacher because she
builds up a good rapport
with her students and wants
everyone to succeed. She
also encourages us every
day to expand our skills in
French and to develop our
worldviews.
What is your favorite class
and why?
My favorite class is
French because it’s always
interesting to learn a new
language and to learn about
francophone cultures. My
classmates are all very supportive
of everyone else, so
it’s a friendly learning environment.
What is one thing that
stands out about your
school?
We have really great
school spirit, which is not
something you see at every
high school.
What extracurriculars do
you wish your school had?
I wish my school had
a cooking club because I
don’t really know how to
cook, and I’d like to learn
how. At North we had one,
and I always looked forward
to it.
What’s your morning
routine?
I wake up, shower, get
ready, then go to school. It’s
photo submitted
not very complicated. I usually
make a cup of coffee in
the mornings too.
If you could change one
thing about school, what
would it be?
I would change the required
classes and I would
add more science courses.
There are so many classes
I wanted to take but was
unable to due to a lack of
space in my schedule, like
AP Bio.
What is your favorite thing
to eat in the cafeteria?
I like the chicken bowls
and tacos.
What is your best memory
from school?
In the summer of 2017 I
went on the school trip to
France. It was an extremely
memorable experience, and
I’m so fortunate that I participated
in this trip. Plus,
it was awesome to use my
French abilities in the real
world.
Silsbee
Cynthia Reynolds, Frankfort resident
This is Silsbee. We heard her cries and
found her stuck about four feet down
the drain pipe of our downspout gutter
system. We tried for about two hours
to coax her out and finally made a dog
catcher’s loop, waited for her to walk
through it, then cinched it. After a bath
and some cuddling, she was fine. She is so smart and doing amazingly well for
what she’s been through. She is now six weeks old, and we named her Silsbee
because we recently purchased a historic home designed and built by renowned
Chicago architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee. Each time we’re at the house we
discover a new surprise; this last time it was a little kitty in need of assistance.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Resale shop opens in Mokena
to benefit local animal shelter
In addition to adopting, volunteering
or donating, locals
can add shopping to the list
of things they can do to help
out NAWS animal rescue in
Mokena.
Resale for Rescues opened
July 2 on Front Street, and the
shelves are brimming with
secondhand items awaiting a
second chance.
The idea of saving things
that someone else did not
want and finding them a new
home parallels the mission
of NAWS to find homes for
abandoned or stray animals.
Proceeds from the shop,
after paying for rent and utilities,
go directly to NAWS to
support its financial needs and
those of the animals it brings
in.
Many times, the animals
NAWS brings in are in need
of medical attention, in addition
to the food, supplies and
regular veterinary care the
animals also will need.
The store takes donations
and sells items such as furniture,
clothing, home goods,
shoes, purses and jewelry. It
does not accept large electronics,
such as televisions or
large appliances.
Owner Connie George said
the resale shop has been a
dream of hers for years, but
after her 50th birthday she decided
to drop everything and
do it for the animals.
“When we started this, I
was volunteering at NAWS,”
George said. “And this was
like my dream ... to have a
resale shop that the profits
would go to for the animals
because they are so unheard.
They have no voice.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Historical society replaces
stained glass windows in
119-year-old church
It has been an expensive
year for the New Lenox Area
Historical Society.
It started with purchasing
the 116-year-old railroad
depot last winter, and the
resources spent to save the
structure from being demolished.
Then, there was also the
acquisition of the 119-yearold
former Methodist church
after that.
“We depleted our budget
this year, but this is all important
to us,” said Dianne Ross,
a member of the historical society.
In addition to purchasing
the church, located at 112
Church St., the restoration
efforts are another expense.
Last month, the historical society
repurposed three large
stained-glass windows that
were long overdue for being
re-leaded. The windows
have not been re-leaded since
the church was built in 1899.
Ross said leading lasts 70-80
years.
Ross hired Cathedral Crafts
Stained Glass Studio to relead
the windows, touch-up
parts where there was intricate
painting, re-trim the outside,
clean and place a protective
covering to protect the glass.
“The gentlemen who owns
the stained glass studio took
one of the really bad ones out
said, ‘I’ve never seen one this
bad,’” Ross said.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Lockport Citizens Police
Academy promotes
partnership with residents
The Lockport Police Department
is accepting applications
for its annual Citizens
Police Academy, which starts
this September and looks to
continue building partnerships
with community members.
The academy is open to
anyone ages 18 and older who
either lives, works or goes to
school in Lockport. Participants
are to meet at the Lockport
Police Department, 1212
S. Farrell Road, from 6-9 p.m.
every Monday starting Sept.
10 for 12 weeks.
There are already nine spots
filled of the 16 allotted for the
program. Participants are to
not only get a chance to learn
about the various aspects of
the police department through
this interactive program, but
they also are to learn a lot
about the people behind the
badges.
“So this course gives the
opportunity to the citizens of
Lockport to come into our
world, I guess you could say,
and get to know us not as the
officers but as the people who
do the job and protect them,”
program coordinator officer
Jeren Szmergalski said. “And
it gives them a little sense of
what we go through as regular
people in this profession, how
it affects us, how it affects our
families [and] what mindset
we’re in when we’re out doing
our various jobs.”
cuisine, listen to live music
and spend time together celebrating
the culture.
This year, Be Greek for a
Day is to be held July 20-22,
at the church, 15625 S. Bell
Road in Homer Glen.
“We just wanted to try to
go an extra day on a Friday
to open it up and try something
different,” said the Rev.
Sotirios “Father Sam” Dimitriou,
of Assumption Greek
Orthodox.
Included in the three-day
lineup is live band performances
throughout the weekend.
On Friday, the classic
rock band Anthem is to perform
from 7:30-10:30 p.m.,
and the Greek band Ormi is to
perform from 5-10 p.m. Saturday
and Sunday.
“It’s something different
for us here in our area, because,
really, when’s the last
time we had live Greek music
in Homer Glen,” Dimitriou
asked. “And it’s something
for the people to experience a
live Greek band.”
The Chicago Pro Hockey
with 143 men listed on various
rosters.
And one woman.
Sandburg graduate Kendall
Coyne, who earlier this year
won a gold medal for the United
States in women’s hockey,
is the lone woman in the firstyear
league, which features
more than 80 players from
the National Hockey League,
the American Hockey League
and the East Coast Hockey
League, as well as amateurs
from colleges, junior teams
and Triple A programs.
Coyne, 26, had played with
and against boys when she
was younger, so this is not
new territory for her. She also
is not the only player from the
area who will participate in
the league, which is to play
its games at MB Ice Arena in
Chicago, which is the Blackhawks’
community rink.
Nine players listed from
Orland Park are a part of the
league.
“Knowing there are so
many NHL and pro players
“Having coached and
Staying safe and healthy during the summer
Amanda Stoll
a.stoll@22ndcenturymedia.com
Getting in shape, or
staying in shape, can
be fun, challenging
and rewarding, but what
it does not have to be is dangerous.
More than once, I have
found myself overexerting
myself in the heat and blazing
sun during the summer.
Whether it is yard work,
spending a day on the lake
or exercising, dehydration
and heat exhaustion are
nothing to joke about.
Being hydrated and being
aware of your body are the
biggest factors to prevent
a dangerous summertime
situation.
Yes, beating your 5K time
or checking some things off
your to-do list are fantastic
goals for sure, being smart
about the time of day and
the location of your outdoor,
physical activities are more
important.
In hot, humid and sunny
conditions, your body cannot
handle the same level
of physical exertion that it
can in cool, shady or dry
conditions. This might seem
to be common sense, but I
know sometimes my own
ambition can get in the way
of my reasoning.
If you’ve ever found
yourself overexerted on a
hot day, you are probably
much the same as me in that
way.
For me, it feels like
admitting defeat or wimping
out, but I assure you it is not
worth landing yourself in
the local emergency room,
or worse.
Heat-related illnesses are
not isolated to dehydration
or heat exhaustion, either.
Some people experience
heat-related rashes and skin
conditions. More serious
cases can lead to heat
stroke, which is a type of
hyperthermia where the
body cannot cool itself and
core body temperature rises.
Basically, the opposite of
hypothermia.
High temperature is the
main risk-factor associated
with heat-related illnesses,
but high humidity and
physical activity multiply
the chances of someone
falling ill.
Those over the age of 65
and children 4 and younger
also have an increased risk
of overheating.
While allowing yourself
to get dehydrated and
overexerted are a gateway
to heat-related illness, other
factors such as sunburn,
alcohol consumption and
certain medications can all
play a role, as well.
It is easy to over do that
while tossing back a couple
of cold ones by the pool and
then simultaneously forgetting
to reapply sunscreen.
According to the Centers
for Disease Control,
symptoms of heat exhaustion
can include: muscle
cramps, general fatigue,
headache, nausea and/or
vomiting, increased pulse,
cool or clammy skin, shallow
breathing, and dizziness
or fainting.
When left untreated, the
condition can worsen and
progress to heat stroke,
which is characterized by a
body temperature of about
“As with people who experience
a high fever from an infection,
increased body temperature can
damage organs and brain tissue or
shut down bodily systems entirely.”
103 degrees. At that point,
their previous symptoms
will worsen and the person
may experience confusion
and loss of consciousness.
As with people who experience
a high fever from
an infection, increased body
temperature can damage
organs and brain tissue or
shut down bodily systems
entirely.
The CDC estimates that
although preventable, more
than 650 people die each
year in the United States
from heat-related illnesses.
That number may be higher
in actuality because reporting
of it as a cause of death
is not required.
Prevent yourself from
falling victim to the heat
this summer by staying hydrated,
protecting yourself
from the sun and knowing
your own limits.
If you are lucky enough
to have a pool, knowing
how to cool down probably
is not much of an issue, but,
if not, having a cold drink of
water, finding respite in the
air conditioning or running
cool water over the inside of
your wrists are good places
to start.
In the event that the heat
does get to be too much, it
is important to seek medical
attention.
Do you know someone
who does not have air
conditioning in their home?
Checking on them during
especially hot weeks, like
the few we have had recently,
could save their life.
Being smart in the sun
might seem like common
sense, and we all know that
protecting yourself from
the sun’s rays can decrease
our risk of skin cancer. This
summer, make sure to protect
yourself from the more
immediate threat of heat
illnesses as well.
In memoriam
Bob Salvino
Bob Salvino, 83, devoted
husband of 58 years to Carrie,
died July 10 in Scottsdale,
Ariz. He was a wonderful
father to Chris, Cindy
(Joe Ojczyk) and Rob (Cindy
Wilcox) and a loving grandfather
of Anna, Mia, Carl,
Alec, Nicholas and Kylie.
His love and good humor
were boundless.
Bob was born at the University
of Chicago hospital to
first generation Italian immigrant
parents and grew up in
the Chatham neighborhood
on the south side of Chicago
with his four brothers, Frank,
Mark, Raymond and Al. He
attended Dixon Elementary
and Hirsch High School and
was a member of the class of
1953.
In the fall of 1953, Bob began
his studies at the University
of Notre Dame, where
he was also a proud Fighting
Irishman for the football and
wrestling teams. After college,
he served in the U.S.
Army, spending one year in
Massachusetts before being
honorably discharged and returning
to Chicago. Soon after,
he began a long-standing
career as a State Farm agent,
serving many home and car
owners in downtown and on
the south side. He and Carolin
moved their family to the
historic town of Frankfort in
1971.
Bob was the cornerstone
of his community and was
always willing to lend a
hand for a worthy cause.
He helped to raise funds to
build St. Anthony Catholic
Church. He worked with
his neighbors to establish
the Prestwick Country Club
and served as its second
president, held numerous
fund raisers for charities
and had more than his share
of mulligans. He served as
a trustee for the Village of
Frankfort.
Bob and Carrie enjoyed
traveling both home and
abroad. After retirement, he
and Carrie spent winters in
Naples, Flo., and Phoenix,
Ariz. Bob loved to golf,
cheer on his beloved Notre
Dame Irish sports teams,
make homemade pasta with
his children and grandchildren
and strike up a conversation
with anyone he met.
He will be deeply missed.
A memorial mass will be
held at 12 p.m. July 24 at St.
Anthony Catholic Church
in Frankfort. Visitation will
begin at 11 a.m. in the vestibule
of the church. His
ashes will be laid to rest at
Cedar Grove Cemetery on
the campus of Notre Dame.
In lieu of flowers, donations
on behalf of Bob can be
made to Standing Tall Charitable
Foundation (stand
15 vendors. We only had a
few hundred people attend
when we started; now we
have thousands attend. The
bands are nationwide. Our
festival has been nominated
one of the best bluegrass
festivals in the nation. We
are nonprofit, working yearround
to put this festival together.
We normally run three
fundraisers a year. This year
we had one, which was at
CD & Me, which was all we
needed to do this year."
Several of the musicians
who performed at the festival
have received prestigious accolades
for their work, ranging
from Grammys to International
Bluegrass Music
awards.
“This is bigger than it’s
ever been, it keeps growing
every year,” Groszek
said. “Where can you go to
a free festival and have your
kids entertained all weekend
long? It’s about bringing
families together and teaching
kids about bluegrass music.
Our volunteers sacrifice
our time for the love of the
music, for the love of families
being together.”
The Goldman family spent
the day enjoying the free
sights and sounds of the festival,
winding up the day having
dinner at Trails Edge.
Megan Goldman, of
Frankfort, and her husband,
Gabe, brought their two sons
to the event.
“We have come three
years,” Megan Goldman
said. “We love the music, as
well as being family friendly.
The kids have a great time.
We have a great time at this
festival. We hope this continues
every year. I know it
takes a lot of work especially
for a nonprofit."
Their 6-year-old son Eli
Goldman added, “ I like the
great music, the bubbles and
the fun," while his brother
Malachi, 4, enjoyed having
the park in the middle of the
festival so the family could
play while listening to the
music.
Laurie Mangia, of Frankfort,
came with her friends,
who are fans of Henhouse
Prowlers.
“Bluegrass music makes
you feel good,” Mangia said.
“It’s simple music and makes
you want to get up and dance.
My friends and I purposely
came to the fest today to
see the Henhouse Prowlers.
This festival brings people
in, gives people a chance to
see what we have to offer and
hopefully they’ll come back."
Henhouse Prowlers celebrated
14 years as a band the
day the group took the stage
at the Frankfort Bluegrass
festival.
“I’ve been involved in
bluegrass my whole life,
starting in a family band,”
said Kyle O’Brien, the newest
member of Henhouse
Prowlers . “I joined the Henhouse
Prowlers, a Chicagobased
band, two years ago.
I came out from the West
Coast to travel around.
"Bluegrass means traditional
music that’s been
played by regular people for
a long time. My favorite to
perform is 'Chop my Money'
even though it’s not a bluegrass
tune. We travel around
the world, doing over 130
shows. We also travel Europe
and beyond."
In addition to enjoying
bluegrass, the members of
Henhouse Prowlers are passionate
about helping the
younger generation learn
music and have started a nonprofit
dedicated to that cause.
“We did a workshop earlier
for people who wanted to
hear about our travels and our
nonprofit Bluegrass Ambassadors,”
O'Brien said. “We
are trying to bring bluegrass
music into the lens of students.
We are having a homecoming
fundraiser on July 20
to raise funds for free music
education for Chicago Public
Schools."
More information about
the program can be found at
BluegrassAmbassadors.org.
Band member Ben Wright
said the band had reached a
milestone during its appearance
at the festival.
“Chris has a new song
we’re performing for the first
time on Sunday," he said.
"We waited for the Frankfort
Sawyer Dippold (left) and her mother Katie, of New Lenox,
work on a craft at the children’s tent during the festival.
Ariana Penagos, of Oak Forest, blows bubbles in the park
at the festival.
Bluegrass festival to be the
first to hear it. It’s called 'Departure.'”
Band member Chris Dollar
added his favorite tune
to perform is "Huckleberry
Hornpipe."
O'Brien said it was great
to be back in Frankfort once
more.
"They have a killer lineup,”
he said. “In fact, we are
staying to see Michael Cleveland.
It’s fun to perform on
stage and it’s fun to watch
everyone else play.”

Inaugural Lincoln-Way Foundation Summer Fest rocks for education
laurie fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Lincoln-Way High School
District 210 Foundation for
Educational Excellence presented
a fun, new way for the
community to come together
to support local schools on
Friday, July 13, with its inaugural
Lincoln-Way Foundation
Summer Fest.
Held at CD & ME, this
“party with a purpose” featured
not one, but two bands
– Then Again and Johnny
Russler and the Beach Bum
Band – giving parents,
teachers and neighbors a
chance to enjoy a rocking
night out while supporting a
good cause.
Food was available for
purchase by local favorites
Gatto's and Dancing Marlin
while CD & ME offered a
variety of drinks at its cash
bars. The Wexler Group at
Keller Williams, Old Second
Bank, Image360, Kiwanis
Club of Frankfort, Coopers
Hawk Winery & Restaurant,
Illinois State Rep. Margo
McDermed and Glatz Management
Services, Inc. all
came together as sponsors.
Several other local businesses
and individuals also
generously supported the
event as table sponsors and
ticket-buyers.
“We came up with this
idea based upon the desire to
bring the entire community
together and thank them for
supporting our mission of
enhancing student academic
achievement,” explained
Bob Kennedy, the foundation's
executive director.
“We wanted to have a community
event and a casual
event because every year
we have a dinner gala that
is black tie optional. We
wanted to do something that
is less costly and pure fun.”
A big part of the fun
came from the live music
as attendees sang and
danced along to a variety
of popular songs. Not only
were both bands comprised
of very talented musicians,
but they also featured members
of the Lincoln-Way
family as Beach Bum Band
frontman Johnny Russler
and Then Again vocalist
Jayson Polad are both District
210 teachers.
FUNERAL SERVICES DIRECTORY
“Jimmy Buffett is playing
at Wrigley Field tonight, but
we feel like we've got the
better bands here at CD &
ME,” said Kennedy as the
Beach Bum Band shared
their tropical renditions of
tunes by everyone from
Paul Simon to Sublime to
Harry Belafonte. Later, Then
Again turned things up to
eleven with a headlining set
full of rock hits.
LW fest
From Page 23
Manhattan residents Margaret
Secor and Joyce Anderson
enjoyed the “awesome”
music, but they were most
excited about supporting the
Lincoln-Way High School
District 210 Foundation for
Educational Excellence, as
their children attended Lincoln-Way
schools.
“All our kids went to Lincoln-Way,”
Anderson said.
“It's a great education. My
kids were in music. They
were in sports and I can't say
enough good things about
it.”
Helping students get the
most out of their education
is at the heart of the foundation's
goals. According to its
mission statement, the Lincoln-Way
Foundation has
awarded more than $4 million
to benefit the educational
programs of the District
since its inception in 1994.
“Our money that we raise
goes primarily to help enhance
technology at the
schools,” Kennedy said. “In
the last six months, we've
given $121,000 back to the
school in the form of scholarships.”
The foundation also recently
supported the Transition
Program – for students
with disabilities – by
providing resources to help
them purchase new furniture
and noise-canceling
headphones, among other
things.
District 210 community
relations director Taryn Atwell
expressed gratitude for
all of the work done by the
foundation.
“We are so appreciative
of everything the foundation
has done for our students,”
she said. “Their education is
enhanced every day by the
things the foundation does
and all the money they raise
for us.”
As the foundation looks
ahead to 2019 – during
which it will celebrate its
25th anniversary – Kennedy
noted that he and his
18-person volunteer board
continue to be inspired by
Lincoln-Way's passionate
teachers, faculty and staff, as
well as the entire community
as a whole.
“The community has been
so supportive,” he said.
“We're the conduit to collect
the money and make sure it
gets into the right place and
we're only as good as the individuals,
the businesses and
everyone that support us.”
Those in the mood for a
raucous laugh this weekend
are in luck, but they may
want to bring a change of
pants, just in case.
Curtain Call Theatre’s production
of “Urinetown, the
Musical” is a satirical comedic
musical with controversial
topics, such as the legal
system, capitalism, social irresponsibility,
populism, bureaucracy,
corporate mismanagement,
and civic politics.
It answers the question:
What might happen if you
had to pay every time you
needed … to go.
The cast and crew have
been rehearsing since the
week before this past Memorial
Day from 7-10 p.m.
Mondays through Thursdays,
making it eight weeks of fine
tuning everything about the
musical that will keep audience
members cross legged
while laughing out loud.
The entire production has a
total of 20 singers and dancers,
four production people
and another four people in
the music pit.
“What’s special here is
that we are a community program
so this is the first year
we brought back the youth
program for Summer Stock,”
said producer and assistant
director Cheryl Collins. “We
did [“Urinetown”] a couple
years ago. This is the first
time we are bringing on the
musical here in Mokena.
Mokena has just been so welcoming,
we just keep adding
things to our program.
“We’ve been [in Mokena]
for two years now. We wanted
something that the kids
would really like because the
kids here are 16-23 years old.
We wanted to find a piece
that was different but one that
our audiences would like and
one that would hit a note that
the kids would understand.
Right now with what’s going
on in society, this really is a
fun story.”
Curtain Call Theatre has
been responsible for numerous
popular productions, but
the feeling among the cast
and crew of “Urinetown” is
that this one especially will
be a hit.
“This musical is extremely
hilarious and that’s something
I've always been attracted
to,” said Delaney
Schmidt, of Frankfort, who
plays Mrs. Millennium. “I
feel like I’m more of a dramatic
actress, but I really do
enjoy taking part in the comedic
style of acting and all
that. This play is just really
funny and it’s a specific style
in my opinion where it's politically
driven. It has a lot for
everybody, its kid friendly
but also adult friendly, too.
“I find it to be really unique
because you know when you
have a politically driven satire
or something like that, it’s
usually heavy on making fun
of one side of the spectrum.
This one makes fun of all
sides.”
Some of the participants in
this musical said they felt it
was special based on the fact
that the cast and crew have
become close over the years
through working on different
productions together.
“I feel like its special because
of the bonds you grow
with other people,” said Ben
Radeke, of New Lenox, who
plays Hot Blades Harry. “You
get really close to a bunch of
new people that you never
met before, or you get even
closer to the people you already
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
nearby train stations and a
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Hunter Stumpf
Hunter Stumpf plays for
Frankfort Force and is an
incoming freshman baseball
player at Lincoln-Way
Central
How’d you get started
in baseball?
I started playing baseball
when my dad signed me up
for tee ball when I was 5, and
I have developed a love for
the game ever since.
What keeps you playing
baseball?
I think my love for the
game and the bonds that I
have created with some of
my teammates is what has
kept me playing all these
years.
What’s your favorite
position to play?
My favorite position is
definitely pitcher since I feel
that it lets me be in control of
the game, rather than being in
the infield or outfield where I
might only get to touch the
ball a few times a game.
Who’s your favorite
player?
My favorite player is Mike
Trout [of the Los Angeles Angels]
because of his work ethic
and how he is able to make
adjustments to his game year
after year to become the best
player possible.
What’s your spirit
animal?
My spirit animal is the
dog because it is loyal and
friendly to others, which are
two characteristics that I try
to show in my own life.
What would be the first
thing you’d buy if you
won the lottery?
If I won the lottery I would
pay off my college tuition
and send my parents on a trip
to Europe since they work
extremely hard and I feel that
they need an extended break.
What would be your
dream college to go to?
My dream college right
now is either University of Illinois
or University of North
Carolina.
If you could own an
exotic pet, then what
would it be?
Photo submitted
I would pick a penguin
because they are really cool
looking and I love the way
they look when they waddle
around from place to place.
If you couldn’t play
baseball, then what
other sport would you
play?
I would play basketball
because that’s the other sport
that I have been playing for a
long time other than baseball.
What’s a life lesson
you’ve learned playing
baseball?
Never give up.
Interview conducted by Contributing
Editor T.J. Kremer III
basketball
From Page 46
cluded a Bulls basketball,
a duffel bag, a T-shirt, preseason
Bulls tickets, a White
Sox voucher and a pass for an
exclusive tour of the United
Center.
Coach Jacquelyn Eubanks
has been coaching with the
Bulls and Sox Academy
for two years. She said the
coaching staff tells the players
that every exercise they
complete, regardless of how
fun it may be, has an important
purpose.
The week-long camp drills
participants on their ball handling,
defense, shooting and
passing skills.
“Those are the main fundamentals
that any player needs
to start at," Eubanks said.
"We hope to see them grow
by the end of the camp, each
and every day."
One drill the children practiced
was an exercise called
dribble knockout. The players
had fun dribbling the ball,
but the coaches said the real
purpose behind the exercise
was learning how to dribble
with pressure while staying
within a certain boundary.
“When you mix in some
games, they don’t realize it
at first but they’re using the
drills they learned to play
those games,” Schalk said.
Schalk said learning fundamentals
of the game such
as dribbling with control and
proper shooting techniques
help participants become
overall better players on and
off the court.
“They get to learn different
paces," he said. "If you’re
dribbling up to a defender
you have to change paces
to get by them. It’s learning
angles of the rim, change of
direction and speed and different
awareness of where
they’re at on the floor."
Throughout the week, several
parents and family members
of the young athletes
watched the players from
the stands, often calling out
words of support and encouragement.
Eileen Gaffney, a grandmother
of two of the participants,
said she has seen
firsthand how the camp has
refined her grandchildren's
skills.
“The coaches are wonderful
and take their time with
the children," Gaffney said. I
think this is a great camp for
kids. With my two grandsons,
I have seen a big improvement
in how they dribble and
shoot the ball."
One of her grandsons, Cullen
Jorgensen, of Frankfort,
said he enjoys taking part in
the sport.
“My favorite thing is shooting,
and now I’ve learned
how to dribble between the
legs,” he said.
Another parent in the
stands, Monee resident Amy
Caldwell, said her son has
begun to develop a passion
for basketball by learning the
game at the camp.
“He had an interest in basketball
and loves the Chicago
Bulls," she said. "I think it’s
good to be with other kids on
a team learning new skills.
He’s only 6, so he’s all new
to this, but he’s excited about
learning how to play the
game."
Schalk said that he pushes
students to do their best to
improve their game because
he remembers being around
their age and discovering his
passion for basketball — a
driving force that has remained
with him his entire
life.
“You figure out how much
you love the game when you
get to teach it to someone
else or help them get better,"
Schalk said. "They have the
same kind of drive I had to
get better."
Scores are compiled
throughout the local summer
camps, and players who rank
the highest in each age group
will compete in a Champions
Day competition.
Eubanks said the coaches
can easily connect with the
students because they all
have one thing in common.
“These are all people that
love the game,” she said.
LW East, West end summer baseball season amid umpire situation
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Griffins senior third baseman Zack Jurgens (right) had an RBI triple and scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Alec Hranicka on July 9 during the
team’s game against Lemont at the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Summer Baseball Tournament. East ultimately fell to Lemont 4-3.
22nd Century Media file photo
Things don’t always go
according to plan.
They didn’t for the Lincoln-Way
baseball team in
the summer state tournament
this week.
East coach Eric Brauer
planned to coach in the second
game of the opening
day of the regional portion
of the Illinois High School
Baseball Coaches Association
Summer Baseball Tournament
on July 9. Instead,
Brauer was pressed into duty
as an umpire for an inning in
a game between Lemont and
Lincoln-Way West.
“That wasn’t in the game
plan,” Brauer said.
But it’s what he did as the
coach of the host school.
Brauer was pressed into duty
because the home plate umpire
collapsed with one out
in the top of the second inning.
While he reportedly
never lost consciousness, the
umpire was taken by ambulance
to a local hospital.
After at least a 30 minute
delay, Brauer had to fill in
for the umpire, but called
balls and strikes from behind
the pitcher. That lasted for
an inning, while base umpire
Steve Besse changed into his
gear to umpire behind the
plate. Matt Roseen, who is
an accredited umpire, was at
the game to watch his brother
play on West. Instead he
umpired the rest of the game
on the bases.
The good news was that
the umpire was released
later that evening, and was
actually back out umpiring
a regional semifinal game at
Lockport the next morning;
however, neither Lincoln-
Way team was at Lockport
the next day.
East had to defeat Lemont
in order to play West in
what amounted to a quarterfinal
game. Instead, Lemont
scored four runs in the top
of the fifth and held on for a
4-3 win.
“We were a little thin
on pitching for the week,”
Brauer said of the summer
league regional. “We planed
to pitch Cole Kirschsieper
against West, but it didn’t
work out.
“Cole didn’t pitch for us
all summer. But that’s OK;
we know what he’s got. He’s
pitched for his travel team.
We wanted to see what some
off our pitchers could do.”
Although the Griffins (6-3
final summer record) lost,
they certainly showed spunk
at the end. After scoring the
games initial run in the second,
they didn’t score again
until the bottom of the seventh.
Then senior third baseman
Zack Jurgens had an
RBI triple and scored on an
RBI single by senior catcher
Alec Hranicka.
Junior second baseman
T.J. Devries added a one-out
infield single, and when the
runners moved up to second
and third on a wild pitch, it
looked like the Griffins were
in business. But a strikeout
and a ground out to deep
short ended the game.
The loss meant there would
be no trip back to the summer
state finals for the Griffins,
who finished as runnerup
in the IHSBCA Phil Lawler
Summer Classic State Tournament
last season.
“We were playing to win
both games,” Brauer said of
the opening day of the regional.
“But it didn’t work
out. It’s OK, it’s summer.
We want to see how guys
perform on the field, in live
games, rather than just practice.”
Brauer credited Hranicka
for stepping in as catcher,
as well as junior outfielder
Nick Mergenthaler, for having
good summers.
East graduated 10 seniors
from this springs squad,
which set a new school record
for wins with 28 and won a regional
championship.
“We’re going to miss our
seniors, they had very specific
roles on our team,” Brauer
said of this springs squad.
“But we have a good group
of guys here and we’re looking
for them not only on the
field, but also to replace that
leadership we had, too.”
Lemont (4-4 final summer
record) went on to defeat
West 7-6 in the quarterfinal
game later on July 9. But
the Indians, who won Class
3A state title in 2014 and
2016, lost 8-2 to Plainfield
South the next day in a regional
semifinal at Lockport.
Later that afternoon, Plainfield
South, which won the
IHSBCA Phil Lawler Summer
Classic State Tournament
title in 2016, defeated
Joliet Catholic Academy 2-1
to win the regional championship.

Chicago Bulls camp encourages children's passion for basketball
Megan Schuller
Freelance Reporter
Boys and girls throughout
the southwest suburbs
received a crash course in
basketball fundamentals this
month at a weeklong camp
run by professional coaches
with the Bulls and Sox Youth
Academy.
From July 9 to 13, coaches
timed the young basketball
players as they ran a series
of drills across the Founders
Community Center gym in
Frankfort — exercises designed
to strengthen the athletes'
coordination, skill and
stamina.
Since 1999, the Bulls have
sponsored summer basketball
camps throughout Chicagoland,
and the Frankfort
Park District has hosted a
camp annually since 2006.
Frankfort Park District
Recreation Supervisor Maurice
Sullivan said the camp
has many benefits for the
young players.
“It’s a good opportunity for
the participants to get proper
skills training," Sullivan said.
"It doesn’t get any better than
having someone with the
NBA train them to develop
their skills."
The camps are offered to
two age groups: a rookie
camp for children between 5
and 8 years old and a basketball
player camp for participants
aged 9-12. The rookie
camp focuses more on fundamentals
and learning the
game, while the second camp
works on refining skill sets.
Coach Anthony Schalk
said the younger players are
often new to the game, while
the older athletes tend to have
experience in other camps,
on teams or at home and participate
in the Bulls camp as a
way to improve their existing
skills.
“For the beginners, they
get a chance to learn the basics
and fundamentals to
grow their passion for the
game," Schalk said. "For the
ones that have been playing,
it’s a chance for them to see
what they need to work on,
so when they go back to play
for their school or travel team
they are a better player than
the year before."
In addition to receiving
professional training and an
evaluation report of their
overall performance, the
young players were given
“The United Center Experience”
package, which in-
Frankfort swimmer wins division in state open water championship
RANDY WHALEN
Three things to know
about the Illinois
High School Baseball
Coaches Association
Summer Baseball
Tournament
1. Zack Jurgens,
Griffins senior third
baseman, had an
RBI triple and scored
on senior catcher
Alec Hranicka's RBI
single.
2. Eric Brauer,
Lincoln-Way East's
baseball coach,
credited both
Hranicka and junior
outfielder Nick
Mergenthaler, for
their strong summer
performances after
the game.
3. The Griffins
concluded their time
at the tournament
with a 6-3 final
summer record.
Swimmers in the 11-12 age category compete in the Open
Water State Championship.
Imagine swimming nearly
a mile and a quarter on an
open lake. Then imagine doing
that in less than 25 minutes,
and lastly, imagine doing
that at the age of 12.
That’s what Frankfort
resident Lauren O’Connor
recently did, and that’s why
she’s a state champion.
O’Connor accomplished
this feat on June 28 at Lake
Andrea in Pleasant Prairie,
Wisc., winning the Open Water
State Championship for
her 11-12 age division.
It was the second state title
in three years for O’Connor,
who also won the 9-10 year
old competition there two
years ago. But that was at a
distance of 1,000 meters. To
win this season’s title, she had
to navigate double that distance
in a 2,000-meter race,
equivalent to 1.24 miles.
“It’s very aggressive and
the start is very important,”
O’Connor said of the race,
which had 82 girls. “You go
around a course with four
buoys on it and you do that
twice. You just have to get a
line to the first buoy and then
get your line to the second
one from there. By the time
you get to the second goaround
your shoulders are really
feeling it.
“You can’t stop, so you
have to kick more in the second
half. I knew I was ahead.
There was a girl next to me
most of the time and then she
dropped off. I wasn’t sure
how far I was ahead; I was
just concentrating on getting
to the end and hitting the
touch pad [which each swimmer
had to do to register their
time at the end]. I won by
about 15 seconds.”
Her final time was 24 minutes:
55 seconds.
For O’Connor, the summer
is the long course season,
with a lot of open water competitions.
That’s a welcome
break from the normal indoor
pool events, which take place
in the winter.
“In the pool it’s really just
you and the strokes,” she
said. “But it the open water,
you have to be smart about
the swimming and pacing.”
With her parents’ background,
O’Connor may have
been born to swim. Her mom,
Sherrill, and dad, Aaron, both
swam and met when they
were swimmers at Carthage
College in Kenosha, Wisc. So,
they steered her toward the
sport, which she first started
when she was 4 years old.
“We had a pool in the back
yard growing up,” Lauren
O’Connor recalled. “So, I
swam in that and my parents
thought it would be good for
me to get involved in swimming
competition. I’m very
competitive, so I took to it
right away and I’ve loved it
ever since.”
O’Connor credits swimming
with the Academy Bullets
Swim Club with helping
her develop into the swimmer
she’s become. She started
with the organization when
she was 9 years old. While
the club has eight locations
throughout the Chicago area,
Frankfort resident Lauren O’Connor poses with her medal
June 28 after winning the 11-12 age division in the Open
Water State Championship at Lake Andrea in Pleasant
Prairie, Wisc. Photos submitted
she’s based out of the one in
Bourbonnais, which uses the
facilities at Olivet Nazarene
University.
“I go there everyday for
practice and we have two-adays
on Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday during the season,”
O’Connor said. “My
coach Scott Tetters is a really
good coach and very knowledgeable.
He’s helped me a
bunch.”
Next month, O’Connor,
who turns 13 on Sept. 15,
will start eighth grade at
Noonan Academy in Mokena.
She’s unsure where she
will go to high school, but
she will continue to compete
for the Academy Bullets. Her
age group next year will increase
to 13-15 and the open
water distance will go to
three kilometers (1.86 miles).
For swimmers in the 16-18
category, it goes up to five
kilometers (3.1 miles).
“The kids always push me
and we push each other,”
O’Connor said of the Academy
Bullets. “They’re always
pushing me, even when I’m
tired. Plus the [Olivet Nazarene]
college team pushes
us and encourages us with
positive reinforcement too.
They’re great leaders and
role models.”
Already a great swimmer,
O’Connor is definitely on the
path to be a great leader and
role model for younger children
too.
Listen Up
"We're going to miss our seniors, they had very specific
roles on our team. But we have a good group of guys
