Cantigny Park is named for a village in France where the First Division of the American Expeditionary Forces fought America’s first battle 100 years ago. homerhorizon.com news the Homer Horizon | July 19, 2018 | 3 John Lane Days celebrates history Owner raises funds to convert barn into educational community center Laurie Fanelli Freelance Reporter Having just celebrated its third year, Historic John Lane Days is becoming one of the most anticipated local events of the summer, as it combines history and family fun while raising money to preserve a Homer Township landmark. Over this past weekend of Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, Historic John Lane Farm — located at 16217 S. Gougar Road — invited friends, neighbors and history buffs to celebrate John Lane’s gamechanging invention of the steel plow in the 1833 while taking in the atmosphere of the working, pesticide-free farm during Historic John Lane Days 2018. Shopping was available at over 20 vendor booths — and inside the farm’s organic produce and gift shop — and tickets were sold for special attractions, including a children’s train ride, pedal cars and other activities, many of which were new to the event this year. Abraham Lincoln — portrayed by Kevin Wood — shared insight into the history of Illinois, Brittany Svee offered family photos on the picturesque grounds, Big R shared advice for the modern farmer at its booth and many more individuals and businesses added to the fun. John Lane Days also hosted a ticketed concert on the evening of July 14 featuring up-and-coming Americana artist Elliot Sedgwick. Proceeds raised from the Proceeds collected from the Historic John Lane Days, which included a fundraising concert for the first time in 2018, will support renovating the barn on the property and transforming it into an educational center for the community. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media concert, along with all the money raised during the daytime activities, will go toward repairing and restoring a barn that farm owner and John Lane Board of Trustees President Sylvia Zielke-Kuffel intends to convert into an educational community center. “Our whole goal is to preserve the history of this location, and John Lane, who invented the very first steel plow,” she said on Saturday afternoon. “We’re a little postage stamp in the middle of a crazy world. What we want to do is bring reality back to ground zero. This is how you grow crops. This is how you survive, and, if you learn it, you’re going to live healthy for a long time, and you’ll feel good.” Lockport resident Michelle Svee fell in love with the farm when she participated in John Lane Days as a vendor — Beads by Chelle — in 2017. Now, she is the secretary on the farm’s board and a driving force behind making Historic John Lane Days bigger and better. “At my first John Lane Days last year, there was just something about Sylvia and her passion for this,” Michelle said of her motivation to get involved. “It’s a piece of local history, and it’s going to get lost if people don’t come out and help us.” Michelle also recruited her mother, Sharon, to join the board and help out with this year’s Historic John Lane Days. “We have more of a variety this year, and a lot more for people to come out and enjoy,” Sharon said. “The concert at 5 p.m. tonight is going to be fantastic, too.” Montessori School of Lemont — which teaches students about farming at John Lane Farm — had a booth in the vendor area featuring items made by students, with a percentage of the proceeds benefiting the farm’s barn restoration project. “Today, we’re here as part of our micro-econ project, where my students run a store on Thursday for our parents,” teacher Rebecca McClenning said. She added that her students love participating in the entire process of farming, from planting to food to table. “At school, their favorite snack is cucumbers that we grow in our own garden,” she said. “They enjoy learning about the land and how to produce products for themselves.” Along with fun and farming, John Lane was at the heart of every aspect of the event, as was the importance of his revolutionary invention: the steel plow. One of his descendants, Lockport resident Floss Smith, was “very happy” to see him honored and enjoyed the new additions to the festival fun. “I hope they can get the money to restore the barn,” Smith said. “I’ve been on Facebook blasting it everywhere for the past couple of weeks. I like how they have the author [Stan “Tex” Banash] and Abe Lincoln here. There’s lots of stuff for people of all ages, and, of course, the organic vegetables and everything are great.” Zielke-Kuffel also enjoyed seeing the smiles on the faces of attendees as they supported her vision to transform the historic barn into a community center honoring the history of local farming and John Lane’s important invention. “I’m thrilled that we have all this going on; it’s amazing,” she said. The produce and gift shop at John Lane Farm is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday through October. LTHS D205 board president resigns Submitted by Lockport Township High School D205 John Lukasik, LTHS board president, submitted his letter of resignation July 10 to the Board of Education secretary. Lukasik In a letter to the Board of Education, he stated, “Effective immediately, I will be stepping down due to the demands of my new position and preparations associated with moving my family out of state.” Lukasik was elected initially to the board in 2009. He was subsequently reelected in 2013 and 2017 and has served as board president since 2011. “Words cannot accurately capture how much I have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of my fellow board members, the spirited debates and the wonderful accomplishments we have been able to deliver in partnership with an outstanding administrative team and professional staff at LTHS,” Lukasik said. The board has 45 days from the date of resignation to fill the vacancy. Interested individuals must submit a letter expressing interest in the position and their qualifications for the position to the District Administrative Center, Board of Education Vacancy, 1323 E. 7th St., Lockport, no later than noon on July 27. Following a review of submitted materials, the board is to schedule interviews with selected candidates. The board is to conduct interviews on the evening of Aug. 2. The new board member is to be seated at the Aug. 20 meeting.
