New Lenox Lenox School District 122 posted
this July 11:
“This summer, three Liberty Student Council
members attended a week long summer
leadership camp sponsored by Illinois Association
of Junior High Student Councils (IA-
JHSC). While at camp, the students worked
to gain leadership skills through small and
large group activities. They participated
in training sessions to become stronger
leaders while also having the opportunity to
exchange ideas with others. In addition to
their leadership training, the students also
participated in an outdoor teams course, and
a variety of team building activities. Liberty
students who attended the summer leadership
camp include: Danny Bencsik, Benen
Flores and Matthew Weaver.
Proud American Days will soon be underway
James Sanchez
james@newlenoxpatriot.com
Local fairs are always
outstanding. There’s
something there for
everyone, from the food,
carnival games, rides, live
music and beer garden.
Where I live in Willowbrook,
we’ve never had
an annual fair, but in the
next town over in Darien,
I always looked forward to
going to Darien Fest every
September as a child. Probably
after sophomore year
in high school I stopped going
because I fell into that
naive high school mentality
of it not being the “cool”
thing to go to as an upperclassmen.
But even after
high school, I didn’t go,
and it lasted through my
post-college years. But the
last few years I’ve gone to
Darien Fest with my little
nephew, and each time I
always wondered, “why did
I ever stop?”
Local municipalities
pump a lot of money into
these fairs to give their residents
a weekend of fun at
an affordable price, so why
not take advantage of it?
After looking at what’s
in store at this year’s Proud
American Days (see Page
7 for the preview story),
I can say that if some of
these events were going on
at Darienfest, I would’ve
probably gone every year.
As a bags (or cornhole)
aficionado, the bean bag
tournament on Thursday,
July 26, and Friday, July
27, immediately caught my
eye. On a side note, those
who are interested in joining
the bags tournament and in
need of a partner, feel free
to shoot me an email. I’d
love to play, and I will not
disappoint as a partner.
Darienfest was just
your standard fair with the
aforementioned attractions
I mentioned. We don’t
have a bags tournament
(July 26-27), baby contest
(July 28), cooking contest
(July 28), craft show (July
28), car show (July 29) or
ceremonies, like the first
responders and military
tribute on July 29. This fair
looks like a really fun time,
and there are a lot of local
officials and volunteers
who put in a lot of hard
work behind the scenes and
during the fair in order for
it to flourish. So, show your
gratitude by spending a few
hours there throughout the
weekend, maybe spend a
few dollars and bask in the
fun that’s not too far away
from home.
