ABOUT THIS GUIDE
HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
This guide contains numerous resources and information
on how to use their services. Here is an example of what you
could say if you were to call one of them!
"Hello, my name is ______________!
I am calling about ______________.
Can you help me with this?"
Good questions to ask:
"Do you allow walk-ins or do I need an appointment?"
"How long do appointments typically last?"
"Do I need to bring any documents or information with
me?"
"What is the closest bus stop to you?"
Additionally, available websites are linked and full URLS can
be found on pages 31-35.
Charlottesville Location:
Virginia Workforce Center
Lane, Suite 103
(434) 529.6791
It is important to register as soon as you lose your position, as the days
you wait will not be accounted for later.
To register, call the Virginia Employment Commission.
(434) 984-7630
DISCUSSING WITH YOUR FAMILY
Telling your family can be a very difficult and emotional thing.
Children can also be aware of the stress created by unemployment.
See the counseling resources on page 4 to find support during this
process.
HANDLING THE STRESS
Make sure you take care of yourself while you look for a new job or wait
return to work.
The mental health and counseling resources on page 4 may be of
assistance to you. Discuss your problems with a professional counselor or
someone that you trust.
Find things that bring you joy and participate in those activities while you
have the time to. This can help to provide a sense of well-being. Some
ideas might be a new hobby or exercising.

LOOKING FOR HOUSING?
CAN I AFFORD IT?
When signing a new lease, renters may ask for first and last month's rent,
a security deposit, a credit check, and/or references. This requires a lot of
money and time upfront, so it is important to keep this is mind and save
up!
It is also more than just paying rent each month, as you will also have to
pay for utilities like electric and water. Different renters might also require
fees for things like having pets or parking spots.
ROOMMATES
Roommates are a great way to help cut some of the costs associated with
renting! You can split utilities, rent, etc. and help make monthly payments
more manageable!
LOCATION
Safety and proximity to work and school are important things to consider
when looking in different locations. Check out where the closest bus
stops are and calculate how much you will need to spend in gas to
commute.
READING THE LEASE
Leases are binding contracts so it's important to read closely before you
sign! Different fees, requirements, and responsibilities of both you and the
renter should be outlined in the lease!
An example of something to pay close attention to is if you need to give
written notice of when you want to move out
and how early you must give notice!
