Side Trips
It was an afternoon of false starts and
frustration.
The high water all over the Iowa Great
Lakes meant we’d been walking through
ankle-deep water over
our dock for nearly
a week in order to
get to and from our
boat. Each day the
deck boards got a
little more slippery
with accumulated lake
vegetation wrapped
around the posts. You
didn’t want to look
at the water you were
walking through, but
for safety’s sake, you
had to.
Maneuvering along the dock was inconvenient,
but not impossible. Our boat was
still able to fit beneath our hoist canopy as
well as under the bridges between East and
West Lakes.
We kept a close eye on the clearance
above our tow bar. My best guess is that
at the highest point we were within three
inches of not being able to pass through.
Despite the obstacles, each day of the extended
Fourth of July holiday weekend we
packed our towels, sunscreen, snacks and
beverages and headed out.
Until Sunday. That afternoon we followed
all our usual preparation steps, got
everyone onboard, and discovered the hoist
wouldn’t lower into the water.
My husband called our lift dealer, who
graciously agreed to meet us at his shop in
10 minutes for a replacement part. That was
the good news — the bad news was that
after my husband installed the new part, it
didn’t work any better than the old one.
Fortunately, there was still a wave runner
Prins Insurance has been in business since 1936. The history
begins from a one room office to our modern and expansive
facility in Sanborn and Sheldon. Our present day Prins Insurance
is an independent insurance agency. Our mission: to provide a
consistent and stable market with competitive insurance products
to meet the needs of our clients. This is accomplished by partnering
with numerous regional and national insurance carriers. Current
ownership of the agency includes Dave Van Essen, Jim Jansen, Bruce
Mosier, and Amber Bosma. Through the years there has been an
addition of sales people and office personnel with 13 employees now
employed in two locations. This growth has led to specialization and
departmentalization with Commercial Trucking, Personal, Farm/
Crop and Commercial Insurance Lines as well as Risk Management
Services. We have also developed and administer a program for the
state Land Improvement Contractors Association in 15 states. We
actively write business in Iowa and the surrounding states, but our
niche programs have allowed us the opportunity in 20+ U.S. states,
of which we are licensed. We have a broad reaching business in this
sense, but also appreciate and enjoy our involvement in the local
communities here in northwest Iowa. We have a lot to be proud of
and are glad to call O’Brien County our home.
Our business is to serve you with three generations
and to understand your complete
insurance & real estate needs
Okoboji on canvas
Nature is represented in Hannah Haberecht’s show
in the Dickinson County Nature Center’s eARTh
exhibit area. PHOTOS BY RANDY PAULSON
Science student and artist captures local nature in her paintings
She lives two states and over 700 miles away,
but Colorado native Hannah Haberecht
has original artwork on display here in
Okoboji at the Dickinson County Nature Center
from now through September.
The 21-year-old biomedical science major at
Colorado State University combined her love of
science, nature and art by painting 17 pictures of
animals, plants and insects that are native to the
Okoboji area.
“Those all date back to last year,” she said of
the acrylic paintings, which went on display July
1 in the eARTh exhibit of the nature center.
She explained the first paintings were of fish
based on a recommendation from her brother,
who is an avid fisherman.
“And I thought that was a really good idea,”
Haberecht said. “I think it’s fascinating to see
them out of water.”
Her parents are designers by trade and
therefore encouraged her to draw and become
interested in art. Meanwhile, she described her
passion for science as a natural part of who she
is.
“I totally love science, since I was little,” she
said.
She has a particular interest in taxonomy,
which is the science of classifying organisms
in the natural world. Therefore, Haberecht not
only strives to make her pictures visually pleasing
but also scientifically accurate by capturing
the details of what makes each individual species
unique.
“You are trying to encapsulate all the small details
that make that thing its individual name,”
she explained.
In two 24 inch by 12 inch paintings, she intricately
details a northern pike and a longnose
gar. Her other fish paintings include a black
crappie and a pumpkinseed. Also on display are
paintings of various butterflies, such as a monarch
and an eastern tiger swallowtail, and plants
such as a New England aster, a prairie rose and
poppies.
Her exhibit also features two landscapes: one
which shows green, rolling hills and another
showing a field of rudbeckia, or black-eyedsusans
sunflowers.
In the bottom-left corner of some of her paintings,
she writes the scientific name of the organism
and its common name in the bottom-right
corner; others only include the scientific name
and have the common name printed on an accompanying
card next to the frame.
Haberecht will return to Okoboji next month
to teach a class on insect identification at 10
a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Dickinson County
Nature Center. The class will last about an hour
and will be open to all ages, free of charge.
“It’s a brief class on how to identify the insect
orders, how to tell this kind of bug from this
kind of bug,” she said.
There will also be coloring pages for children
who attend, as well as pinned samples of insects
for them to look at up close.
When people see her artwork, she hopes they
see not only its scientific value but also how it
captures the beauty of nature—and especially
that of Okoboji nature.
“Nature’s amazing, and I think it’s one of
those fundamental roots for art in the world,”
she said.
Many of her paintings on display are also
for sale, with prices ranging from $25 for the
smaller paintings to $135 for the larger ones.
Since she spent several family vacations in
Okoboji while growing up, Haberecht said this
part of N’West Iowa is special to her. And now,
she said to have her original artwork on display
here and available for sale is incredibly meaningful
for her.
“To say I’ve ‘vacationed’ here is an understatement,”
she said. “I’ve been here every year of
my life. To have paintings that might be hung in
someone’s home—yeah, it means a lot.” F
Empty Dresses
New exhibit builds narratives from
found garments
Inspiration comes in many forms.
For a new series on display at
the Pearson Lakes Art Center, the
subject matter could be as simple as
dresses.
But that would be an understatement,
as the artwork being shown by
Paula Streeter is much more than a
representation of an article of clothing.
The “Empty Dresses” exhibit will be
up through August 11 in the Goodenow
Gallery on the lower level of the
art center.
While the pieces represent work
done largely in the past two years, the
inspiration for the series goes back
much further.
In her artist statement Streeter
writes that the concept “was conceived
half a lifetime ago” at an estate
auction.
“Among the many hand crafted
items from the latter half of the 19th
century were two intricately and nearly
identically embroidered, grayed
with age, christening gowns that decades
earlier were wrapped in brown
paper and bound in string,” Streeter
said.
They became the initial basis for
one of the four themes that make up
“Empty Dresses.”
“Childhood Lost” illustrates children’s
dresses and experiences. “Handled”
depicts a hand engaged with a
dress. “Miss Placed” has drawings of
dresses on various media placed on
top of found images. “Historic Media”
explores women in history as represented
by their dress.
Artwork in the “Historic Media”
theme on display include a representation
of Abbie Gardner as well as a
native Sioux mother and daughter.
Each of the themes make use of different
materials and techniques which
comes as a direct result of the art
classes Streeter teaches at Iowa State
University in Ames.
“When I assign a project to students
This Weekend!
From affixing a drawing to old gift
wrap paper, to using pigmented
beeswax, Paula Streeter applies
all kinds of media and technique
for her artwork in “Empty Dresses.”
PHOTOS BY RYLAN HOWE
I take one on too,” Streeter said.
“When I’m teaching drawing part of
it is engaging a hand with an object,
so I just did the same assignment as
them.”
For the “Historic Media” pieces
Streeter wanted to create something
pretty holistically from start to finish
by hand.
“Those are all done with handmade
media - one of them I dug
through a dumpster to find big pieces
of paper. I like working pretty much
from scratch,” Streeter said.
Those pieces are done to size and
also use real dresses as inspiration.
The collars on the Sioux dresses
were done with traditional native pigments
and egg yolk with the rest of the
piece done in walnut ink.
“I did two people together on that
one. I consider all of these portraits
and in Native American culture women
worked together on almost every
facet of daily life. That’s a mother
and daughter carrying on tradition,”
Streeter said.
Found objects are a big part of
the work. The “Miss Placed” pieces
include old found hotel prints that
Streeter then would then draw over
top. One piece is actually old gift wrap
paper to which Streeter affixed one of
the dress drawings. Even the frames
themselves are found, not bought.
Graphite, colored pencil, egg tempura,
even pigmented beeswax. Streeter
employed all manner of technique
to produce the works of art in “Empty
Dresses.”
And each one tells a story.
“Some of them are shallow narratives
and some have more to them.
The more I work on them the more
the narratives build,” Streeter said. “I
always think about how we dismiss
what were such huge narratives. With
still life in the past every flower had a
significant meaning - the bugs, the interactions
of flowers - with christening
gowns if they put certain flowers on
it that meant something in the 1890s
which I find fascinating.”
Visitors will be fascinated as well as
they take in the artwork and stories
behind them in “Empty Dresses.” F
OUT!
Farce provides night of laughter
Leave the kids at home, this is adult style humor taking the stage
Okoboji Summer Theatre audiences
have always loved a good
laugh. The traditional British
farce offering on the 2018 schedule
“Not Now, Darling” delivers everything
those audience members love.
Scantily dressed women, deceitful
husbands and wives, freely flowing
alcohol and slamming doors fill the
stage from beginning to end. Add in
cleverly written dialogue, many plays
on words, physical comedy and two
great lead actors and you have a winning
combination.
Listen closely and you’ll catch the
humor between prey and pray, references
to being dirty and speaking of
breasts during a conversation about
birds. Authors Ray Cooney and John
Chapman craft an elaborate web of
confusion and deceit.
Director Frederick J. Rubeck understands
just what it takes to make a successful
farce and shares that knowledge
with his hard-working cast.
Leading the pack are OST veterans
and professional actors Courtney
Crouse and Kyle Groff. Crouse has
proven himself many times in comedic
roles and this one is every bit as
good as any of his previous appearances.
His sense of timing is always just
right, pausing to think of his next
explanation, or reluctantly allowing
himself to get pulled into some
scheme out of a sense of loyalty. He
makes the ridiculous seem plausible.
Everything about Crouse is perfect
for the role. He is the right amount
of nervous at the beginning but
progresses into a veteran schemer by
story’s end. He is hilarious in demonstrating
women’s clothing fluttering
to the ground, getting wrapped up in
a phone cord, retreating to the corner
like a scolded child and helping an
intoxicated secretary shimmy into an
ill-fitting dress. The first time he tosses
clothing over the balcony railing
seems absurd, but soon it seems the
only reasonable solution. The audience
seems to know by the end of the
show that the small suitcase is going
over the railing too.
Groff is the perfect complement to
Crouse. They mimic each other’s actions
and mannerisms. They scheme
together and respond perfectly to
each other. Groff begins the play by
explaining a few things to the audience
but effortlessly switches back
and forth between communicating
with the audience and becoming his
character. His first words to the audience
prove prophetic of the story - 98
percent of men are unfaithful and the
other 2 percent are liars.
In this play though, the female characters
are equally unfaithful.
A host of Stephens College students
fill the female roles in the play. Mamie
Meenehan, Devin Keating, Erika Wilson,
Hannah Sutton, Hope Peña and
Lili Javorka benefit from working with
professionals like Crouse and Groff.
It would be hard to not put together
your best efforts when working with
such quality actors.
Keating, Peña and Sutton tackle the
biggest roles. Javorka fills the part of
Groff’s wife. All have moments where
they need to be seductive or coy. Sutton
rarely is fully clothed, though she
is wrapped in a fur coat and being
shoved in and out of the storage closet
for most of the show. She even appears
on stage wearing just two little
tea towels. Oh my.
Aleksander Krapivkin and TJ Vinsavich
complete the cast. Vinsavich
actually fills two completely different
parts, showcasing his diverse talents.
Scenic design was created by Brandon
PT Davis. Lighting was handled
by Savannah Bell, sound by Michael
Burke and costumes by Ashley Harrison.
Harrison’s work includes a
Union Jack flag attached to one lady’s
undergarments.
On opening night a few lines
seemed a little squeaky and pinched.
Some technical issues messed with
the sound effects, but the perfection
of Crouse and Groff together makes
up for anything else that might not be
just right. F
38th Annual Boat Rendezvous
Boat owners show off antique, classic boats at Arnolds Park
Boat owners and enthusiasts are
gearing up for the annual Iowa
Great Lakes Antique and Classic
Boat Show and Rendezvous, coming
ashore next Saturday at the Arnolds
Park docks.
“This will be our 38th annual rendezvous,”
said Alex Kent, the head of
the boat show.
The main exhibit will run from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, however
Kent said boats will start arriving at
the docks earlier that morning. He estimated
that roughly 40-45 boats will
be on display this year, and that the
show will attract upwards of 10,000
spectators throughout the event.
The show is put on by the Jerry
Dyhrkopp Iowa Great Lakes Chapter
of the Antique and Classic Boats Society.
The event is open to the public
to attend, but costs $40 for chapter
members to register their boats. For
non-members, the cost is $50 to
register, with same day registration allowed.
Many of the boats belong to local
residents, although Kent said the
show attracts people from all over the
country who enjoy making a vacation
out of the event. He mentioned there’s
a Glastron boat enthusiast who travels
all the way from Florida to attend the
rendezvous.
“This year’s show itself, we are trying
to get more boats from out of
that the Minnesota-based Bob Speltz
Land-0-Lakes Chapter of the Antique
and Classic Boat Society will attend.
The part of the show he said people
most enjoy is being able to learn
about the variety of boats on display.
“We definitely encourage the public
to come out and ask questions,” Kent
said, adding, “It’s one of the reasons I
love it.”
Boat owners will explain their personal
connection to a particular boat,
whether it’s a family heirloom or just
a boat that holds a lot of memories.
The show is also an opportunity for
younger generations to learn about
boats and develop an interest in the
activity.
After the exhibit there will be a
short presentation.to recognize boat
owners and event organizers.
The famous “Cruise between the
Lakes” will follow the presentation.
Spectators can see the boats in action
as they cruise from West to East Okoboji
Lake.
Kent said the Department of Natural
Resources helps coordinate the
cruise, and a fire and rescue boat normally
leads the parade of boats.
If anyone is interested in becoming
a member, Kent said they can contact
current chapter members at www.
50 years for the Pioneers
Milford’s summer celebration
hits half-century mark
com
It’s been more than
a century since the
original pioneers made
their way across the country.
Those who currently
call Milford, IA home will
be celebrating their heritage
and their community
next weekend with the
50th Annual Milford Pioneer
Days.
The summer celebration
hits the half-century
mark with three jampacked
days of events
and activities Friday, July
27-Saturday, July 29 all
across the Dickinson County community.
Florence Park is a hub of sorts throughout
the weekend. Such popular kids activities
as the inflatables, face painting, kid’s
carnival, dunk tank, and story time all take
place in the park.
It also plays host to the 2nd Annual
Adults Bags Tournament, and 5th Annual
Pioneer Pitmasters BBQ Competition.
The bbq contest has grown exponentially
since its inception.
“It started out with maybe four competitors
the first year and last year we had
15,” said Chris Hinshaw, president of the
Milford Commercial Club. “Two years ago
we started the public tasting and about 100
people showed up. That all of a sudden has
grown to 300-plus people. It’s grown to be
a really big event.”
Hinshaw says the parade is also a huge
draw, and that it’s one of the bigger ones in
northwest Iowa.
On top of these major events are a variety
of other entertainment and activity options.
All-town garage sales take place both
Friday and Saturday. Pizza and pie eating
contests take place in Florence Park. There
is also a Run, Punt, Pass & Kick Contest as
well as a 5K Run/Walk.
Card players can take part in bridge, cribbage,
500, and pinochle tournaments at St.
Joseph Catholic Church.
Sunday morning will see a string of tractors
depart town for the Okoboji FFA Tractor
Ride Around West Lake.
It all adds up to something for everyone
to enjoy throughout the weekend.
“There are a lot of events going on in
the community that make it just get bigger
every year,” Hinshaw said. “We do Pioneer
Days to give thanks to the community for
doing business locally and it’s a great time
to celebrate your town and community, get
together and have a good time.” F
Between several athletic games,
live entertainment, a parade and
numerous other events, Sanborn
is going to be a busy place next weekend.
The town of roughly 1,400 will kick
off its 22nd Annual Railroad Days
celebration next Friday, which will last
until Sunday.
The citywide celebration draws
quite a crowd, according to the director
of the Sanborn Chamber of Commerce,
Sally Smith.
“We get a lot of Sanborn people, but
we also get a lot of people from the
surrounding area, too,” she said.
This year’s Railroad Days will feature
a mix of new events and old
favorites.
For example, Smith said a 3-on-3
basketball tournament at the city park
will make its Railroad Days debut,
sponsored by the city’s parks and recreation
board. The teenage division
for ages 16–20 will take place 3 p.m.
Friday, while the adult division for 21
and older will be at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Another new event will be a youth
obstacle course at the city park, sponsored
by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn
wrestling team. The course costs $5
for one attempt, $10 for three and $20
for unlimited attempts.
“That kind of seems to be a hot
topic right now,” said Smith about the
obstacle course.
Back again this year will be the
Antique Tractor Ride on Friday morning,
as well as free swimming at the
Sanborn Aquatic Center Friday and
Saturday.
Also back are discounted tours at
Yesterday’s Memories & Vander Haag’s
Truck Museum on Eastern Street. The
cost for entry is only $5.
Smith said the museum tours have
“gotten to be really big here in Sanborn.”
Friday night will close out with a
performance by the Four for Him
quartet in the city park, followed by a
disc jockey night at the Rails bar and
restaurant on Main Street.
Early risers can enjoy a pancake
breakfast starting at 6 a.m. Saturday
at the city park shelter, where a bake
sale will also be taking place. A 5K and
one mile fun run will held later that
morning at Miller Park. The parade
will get going at 10:30 a.m. and will
roll through the central part of town.
A medley of activities aimed at
younger kids will fill up the rest of Saturday
afternoon, culminating with a
public showing of the 2017 hit movie
“Wonder” in the park at dusk.
The night will once again conclude
at Rails with a street dance featuring
live music from Mickey & the Monsters.
Sunday morning will be the second
edition of the Railroad Days community
worship service led by Pastor
Mark Waterstone at the city park.
“Last year was the first time,” Smith
said of the community worship. “It
really was a neat service.”
Before the service, residents can
grab a quick omelet breakfast at the
fire station and then attend the Sanborn
Shine and Show on Main Street
afterward. The popular auto show will
feature a range of cars, pickups and
even motorcycles.
Smith said she was grateful to the
chamber of commerce and the various
Sanborn businesses that sponsor
Railroad Days each year. She said
having the community be able to
celebrate the town of Sanborn all
together is what makes Railroad Days
enjoyable. F
Taking place at the exclusive London fur salon of Bodley and Crouch, the scene
identities. This farce was written by the powerful writing duo, Ray Cooney and John
Chapman, to deliver a night of excitement and fun!
