MISSION
Dellner provides Train Connection Systems with innovative concepts and an excellent
global After Sales service which makes travel safer, more reliable and profitable.
VISION
To become the preferred supplier for coupler and gangway systems.
OUR COMPANY - OUR HISTORY
The history of Dellner starts in 1941 when Mr. Jan
Dellner established a small production facility in the
north of Sweden where he started manufacturing
automatic couplers exclusively for the Swedish
market. Over the years we have grown to become
a major global player within Train Connection
Systems, serving customers all over the world.
Dellner has always focused on innovative research
and advanced design and by doing so we have
introduced several global breakthroughs in the
rail industry in the past half century. In 1984, we
were the first manufacturer to launch the gas
hydraulic damper in couplers. This was followed
by the production of snow gaiters and front hatch
mechanisms in the nineties. The last several years
have seen new products successfully implemented
in front to intermediate train systems. Throughout
the history of Dellner, one of the biggest milestones
was the acquisition of the Woodville factory which
allowed use to produce gangways in house. With
this acquisition Dellner became the world’s leading
system integrator when it comes to the interface
between rail cars and train front ends. We supply
full Train Connection Systems and serve all major
train manufacturers and operators worldwide.
We have more than 500 employees located across
the globe working at our factories and sales offices
in 13 countries. Our top priority is to always offer
our customers the right quality, excellent delivery
accuracy, great flexibility and local presence.
In addition we provide an excellent After Sales
service for the majority of existing car types,
regardless of make. Many large service operators
in the After Sales market have chosen Dellner as
their supplier.
LET’S MEET IN
DELLNER’S WORLD
OF FUTURE TRAIN
CONNECTIONS
In September 2014 Dellner launched the
SGX (Segmented Gangway ConneXion) – a
revolutionary Train Connection System which
creates the greatest potential for both operators
and producers. Together with their flat floors
and panelled walls, the SGX gangways contribute
to a unique passenger experience and maximum
capacity. Very natural and controlled movement
of the system results in an extended bellows life
and reduced life cycle costs. The new gangway
will definitely change the way of future travelling!
Let’s meet SGX
The purpose of a gangway is to provide a safe
and comfortable passage between vehicles for
the use of passengers and crew. This passage may
also contribute to the available passenger space in
Metros and similar vehicles.
Desirable features are good aesthetics to
complement the vehicle interior and exterior,
low maintenance, long service life and ease of
installation.
Segmented Gangway ConneXion (SGX) was
developed to meet existing needs and offer new
functionality in a fundamentally new way.
SGX bridges the space between the vehicle ends
by dividing this space into segments, reducing
the relative movement between each segment
and thus offering a controlled and predictable
passenger space.
Old solution vs new solution
Traditional gangways depend on the flexible bellows
to fulfil two functions – create an environmental
barrier and a force transmitting unit. Fulfilling two
different functions means that they cannot be
optimised for both.
SGX separates these 2 functions. The bellows
are entirely passive and are only required to be
an environmental barrier. Force transmission is
carried out by polymer springs in the gangway,
positioned between segment hoops, creating a
dynamic skeleton. Both the bellows and springs can
now be fully optimised for their functions, offering
better performance and a 15 year lifespan.
Unlike traditional gangways, SGX moves in a
completely predictable way. This allows for a better
passenger experience inside the gangway and
prevents problems such as the gangway impacting
with the body end during large movements.
The use of a dynamic skeleton to which the bellows
and panels are attached means most maintenance
and overhaul activities can be carried out on the
vehicle without the need to remove the gangway,
saving time and money.
PATENT APPLIED FOR
An excellent solution that
will revolutionise the market
SGX is a fully integrated module comprising outer
bellows, vehicle mounting frames, tread plate,
internal walls and ceiling. It can be connected to the
vehicle using bolts or quick release latch system.
The outer bellows are made from silicone rubber,
providing a long lifespan, high fire resistance, high
noise attenuation and low thermal conductivity.
The inner walls can be either conventional bellows
or a segmented panel system, offering a range of
aesthetic possibilities for vehicle designers. The
tread plate and ceiling are segmented to offer a very
flat overall surface and small relative movements
between segments for a safe, comfortable
passenger experience.
We listen carefully
to our customers
The customer will enjoy a more spacious gangway
interior as well as a feeling of security due to the
robust structural design of SGX. The SGX gangway
movements are much more natural and intuitive
than those of a conventional gangway, adding to the
feeling of comfort and security.
Due to the predictable movements of the SGX
gangway and the dynamic skeleton structure,
vehicle designers have new possibilities. It is now
possible to easily integrate additional features into
the gangway such as passenger barriers at the
edge of the body profile and air ducts in the space
between the outer bellows and inner surfaces. It
even becomes possible to interact with the jumper
cables to help control their movements and
provide a more benign operating environment for
them, thus potentially reducing maintenance issues.
SGX fulfils the basic needs to provide a safe,
comfortable passenger environment with
competitive overall lifecycle costs and easy
maintenance for the train operator.
The SGX design allows for a generally wider internal
gangway as it is better able to accommodate large
vehicle movements due to the segmented design.
Due to the choice of panels or bellows on the
gangway interior, there is a wide range of aesthetic
options allowing the gangway to harmonise with
the rest of the vehicle interior.
SGX has been designed for ease of assembly,
high passenger comfort, ease of maintenance and
overhaul, and competitive overall lifecycle costs.
The concept has been validated by CAD modelling,
physical modelling, small scale dynamic testing, fullsize
endurance testing and real-world passenger
service.
The performance of the SGX gangway closely
matches predicted behaviour, further validating the
basic concept and the design configuration.
AUTOMATIC COUPLERS
• An automatic coupler makes it possible to connect railway vehicles automatically.
• It creates a safe and reliable mechanical connection, a pneumatic connection and also an electrical connection
between the vehicles.
• Coupling is carried out at low speed without manual assistance, thus ensuring maximum safety for this critical
manoeuvre. It results in a rigid, slack-free and fully latched connection. Furthermore, with the designed centring
and support arrangement it allows for both horizontal and vertical track variations.
• Uncoupling the mechanism head can be carried out either remotely from the driver’s cab or at the coupler
itself using manual release. Once the vehicles have moved apart, the couplers are automatically reset, ready to
be coupled again.
• Provides an optimised energy absorption solution for maximum protection of the vehicle and the passengers.
• Many different types of couplers are available depending on the required forces, applications and technical
TRAIN PROTECTION PRODUCTS
• Protection gaiters protect the coupler and coupler box by providing a flexible membrane that does not
restrict the movement of the coupler and barrier against snow and ice build-up on the coupler pivot and other
sensitive parts.
• Prevent dust, sand, snow and ice build-up within the coupler box from underneath, therefore decreasing
premature wear and increasing the reliability of the coupler.
• Used in conjunction with coupler head heaters increases their efficiency by keeping the heat within the coupler
face and not heating the air around it prior to the coupler being coupled in extreme winter conditions.
• Option to order bespoke solutions to take into account the varying environmental conditions on each train line
and to ensure a safe, cost effective and reliable service for every fleet of trains.
Energy absorbers
There are many types of energy absorption components, each with different functions and capacities
STAGE 1.
GAS HYDRAULIC BUFFERS
AND VISCO ELASTIC BUFFERS
CRASH ENERGY MANAGEMENT (D-BOX)
Crash Energy Management (D-BOX) is a vital part of the coupler design for increasing demands on passenger
safety and to keep trains running on time. The combination of energy absorption components helps keep forces
and accelerations at acceptable levels to both save lives and prevent unnecessary damage to car bodies.
• The effect of a collision on a train is dependent upon the behaviour of the energy absorbers built into
the couplers
• Whatever the impact conditions, the couplers should not bottom out, otherwise high deceleration
will occur.
• Energy should be absorbed along the train and impact forces generated at vehicle interfaces must be
controlled, as these represent deceleration/acceleration at these positions.
• Crash Energy Management is used specifically for crash requirements standards such as EN15227 or
other applicable standards, as well as for optimising performance at maximum coupling speed.
CEM Simulations
Dellner has the know-how to offer products that can meet all of these requirements. With our own 1D simulation
software, we can run almost every possible load case so we find the best solution for our customers in terms
of energy performance and cost. More advanced crash sequences and 3D simulations can be performed with
The Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern rolling stock programme is a railway franchise for the provision of
passenger services. The trains are electric multiple units produced by Siemens, which have improved energy efficiency
due to their low-weight construction and intelligent systems. Moreover, they are characterised by safe operation
because they meet the latest industry standards.
Solution:
In ensuring optimal crashworthiness, all the crash scenarios defined by EN 15227:2008 and TSI Crash scenarios I to IV
were taken into consideration.
To manage these requirements, the Thameslink project includes Dellner’s stabilising joint solution in the intermediate
coupler. Our design better fulfilled the needs of our customers compared to other solutions on the market. The STG
works against climbing and jackknifing, thus providing the highest safety for passengers. lt also means lower costs for the
producer, as the solution does not require additional anti-climbing products.
AFTER SALES
PROJECTS
PERTH A SERIES COUPLER OVERHAUL
Product Type: Coupler Type 10
Manufacturer: Non-OEM
Product Age: 15–20 years old with little history of maintenance
Quantity: 96 x automatic couplers and 96 x semi-permanent couplers
In 2012, Dellner Australia was involved in a heavy maintenance regime with the maintainer and asset owner in an
attempt to increase reliability of the old couplers and reduce the overall operational risk to the maintainer. The coupler
maintenance contract was for the current overhaul with the inclusion of a subsequent overhaul within eight years of
in-service operation. This enabled Dellner Australia to monitor and assess the progress and results of the first overhaul,
while also being able to evaluate any opportunities to reduce the scope of maintenance for subsequent overhauls, to
the benefit of the maintainer and asset owner.
During the disassembly, testing and evaluation of old couplers, it was discovered that over 76% of all muff couplings
were cracking and fracturing. This type of failure in such a safety-critical component compromises the safe operation
of the entire coupler and train.
Dellner has introduced its own muff couplings for these couplers (along with many other Dellner parts), which have
been designed and tested specifically to overcome this design flaw. This failure has also been discovered in other
couplers across Australia that in fact use the same muff coupling design.
Other major issues discovered and replaced/repaired by Dellner Australia within this coupler are:
• Expanded/cracked bearing brackets and half shells.
• Partially activated deformation tubes (probably due to excessive coupling forces).
• Extreme deterioration in rubber components and lost elasticity.
• Worn hook plates and link pins with excessive movement and corrosion.
• Excessive corrosion within electrical coupler covers.
Another major concern for all operators is the continuity of coupling connections between electrical connections.
Modern vehicles are heavily reliant on the electrical coupling connection to transmit many important signals between
railcars. Based on the age and condition of the couplers, we found it was beneficial to the reliability of the electrical
coupler to change a few items on a mandatory basis. These were:
• Every electrical pin within the electrical coupler (male and female).
• Electrical coupler operating bar guide and block guide.
Benefits of coupler overhaul
• Replacement of materials that have been in
operation for many years, eg. rubber elements.
• Guaranteed full function of the critical
connection part, i.e. the coupler.
• Lower maintenance costs.
• Testing the functionality of
crash management elements.
POLISH EMUs COUPLER MODERNISATION
mta baltimore lrv coupler upgrades
Product Type: Different types of couplers
Manufacturer: Non-OEM
Product Age: Over 40 years
Quantity: 330 x automatic couplers and 250 x semi-permanent couplers
From the late 90s, Dellner Poland has been specialising in modernising automatic and semi-permanent couplers for the
Polish EMU series EN57 and ED72, among others.
In 1997, Dellner Poland started a cooperation with Polish National Railway (PKP) to modernise the couplers that
were more than 30 years old and did not guarantee the functions they should have fulfilled. The first modernisation
was completed in 1998 and after 10 years in operation, the couplers were dismounted from the trains and tested at
Dellner’s facility. The results of the tests confirmed the quality of our couplers; all of the parts showed minimal wear.
Following the success of testing, Dellner successfully applied for a Certificate of Approval from the Polish Office of Rail
Transportation to modernise the automatic couplers, followed by the semi-permanent couplers a few years later. Since
then, Dellner Poland has modernised several hundred couplers for different Polish operators.
Automatic coupler modernisation:
• All strategically important elements, such as the draw bar, bushings, main pin, ring springs, hook plate and
coupling link, were replaced with new ones.
• Castings were MT-tested (detection of micro cracks) and proper machining was applied.
• In some places, severe material wear was corrected by means of facing welding.
• Electrical couplers were replaced with new ones with linear movement (on slides). The new design allowed
the application of pin/sleeve contacts and high speed data transmission contacts (D-REX).
• Finally, each buffer was tested.
• All construction measurements were maintained.
Semi-permanent coupler modernisation:
• All strategically important elements were replaced with new ones (eg. draw bar, bushings, ring spring).
• Couplers were equipped with protection against car separation in case of draw bar breakage.
• Couplers were equipped with pin/sleeve guiding to improve coupling.
• All construction measurements were restored.
Benefits of coupler modernisation
environments.
• MRP upgrade: improved material design to increase lifetime and wear resistance.
• Electric coupler upgrade: modernised design to the electrical coupler including the contact device and
contact housing. The design introduces pin and sleeve contacts along with 100 Mbit D-REX connections.
Benefits of coupler upgrades
• Extension of the lifetime of the parts and improved maintainability.
• Lower maintenance costs for the operator.
• The valve upgrade makes the couplers and train interfaces more efficient due to improved reliability in
the rail environment.
• Sourcing the valves to improve lead times to the customer when needed as spare parts.
• The electrical upgrade with D-REX benefits the communication capability between vehicles
and improves passenger safety and the riding experience due to higher video quality and critical
train line communication points.
• Cheaper and faster alternative vs. purchase of new vehicles.
• Creates new opportunities for a wider range of applications on the train thanks to the modern design of
electrical coupling (Ethernet, surveillance cameras, passenger information, advertising).
• Lower conservation and exploitation costs.
• Guarantees better and more flexible fleet usage during peak hours.
• Lower number of breaks during service due to efiicient usage of fleet.
THIS IS SWEDEN
Facts, emblems and map
Sweden is one of the largest countries in Europe,
with great diversity in its nature and climate. Its
distinctive yellow and blue flag is one of its national
emblems, which reflect centuries of history
between Sweden and its Nordic neighbours.
The Swedish flag
The Swedish flag, depicting a yellow cross on a blue
background, dates back at least to the 16th century.
Sweden is a sparsely populated country,
characterized by its long coastline, extensive
forests and numerous lakes. It is one of the world’s
northernmost countries. In terms of surface area it
is comparable to Spain, Thailand or the American
state of California.
Sweden’s borders have been unchanged since 1905
and the country has not been at war since 1814.
Since 1916, June 6 has been celebrated as Swedish
Flag Day. This eventually also became Sweden’s
National Day in 1983 and a public holiday from 2005.
The date was chosen for two reasons: the election
of Gustav Vasa as Sweden’s king on June 6, 1523,
laid the foundation of Sweden as an independent
state; and on the same date in 1809, Sweden
adopted a new constitution that included the
establishment of civil rights and liberties.
Extreme contrasts
Sweden experiences extreme contrasts between
its long summer days and equally long winter nights.
In the summer, the sun stays in the sky around the
clock in the parts of Sweden north of the Arctic
Circle, but even as far south as Stockholm (59°N)
June nights have only a few hours of semi-darkness.
The Gulf Stream
Considering its geographic location, Sweden
enjoys a favourable climate. This is mainly because
of the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current that
flows off Norway’s west coast. Scandinavia has
been completely covered by ice during several
periods of history. The most recent Ice Age ended
only about 10,000 years ago, and the weight and
movement of the ice sheet had a profound effect
on the landscape.
The hard outcrops of underlying rock were
polished into the rounded shapes characteristic
of Sweden’s archipelagoes, and hollows were
deepened into valleys and lakes.
49
Varied scenery with rich wildlife
With its variety of landscapes, Sweden has
everything from bears and wolves in the north to
roe deer and wild boar in the south. The country
also has a wealth of flora and aquatic life, which
contribute to its biological diversity.
Much of the Swedish landscape is dominated by
coniferous forests such as pine and spruce, with
large forests of deciduous trees such as birch and
aspen in the south. Because of their limestonerich
bedrock and favourable climate, the islands of
Gotland and Öland and parts of the Scandinavian
mountain range have interesting flora that includes
numerous varieties of orchid.
Numbers increasing
Along with its beautiful scenery, Sweden can boast
rich and varied wildlife. The wolf, for example, is
expanding its habitat across northern and central
Sweden. Bear, lynx and wild boar populations are
also increasing. Throughout the country there are
large numbers of moose (elk), roe deer, foxes and
hares.
The moose is a great prize for hunters but is also
a traffic hazard. Hunting is closely regulated, and
many species of animal are completely protected.
Winter bird life in Sweden is dominated by a few
species, but summer brings large numbers of
migratory birds from the south.
There are between 300,000 and
400,000 moose in Sweden
With its long coastline and many lakes, Sweden also
has a rich variety of aquatic life. Fish species vary
from the cod and mackerel of the salty Atlantic to
the salmon and pike found in the far less saline Gulf
of Bothnia and in lakes and rivers. Herring and the
smaller Baltic herring used to be important staple
foods, but today are seen more as delicacies.
In 1910, Sweden became the first European
country to establish national parks, mainly in the
mountainous districts of Norrland.
This helped save parts of Europe’s last wilderness
from exploitation. Numerous nature reserves and
cultural heritage areas have also been established
across the country.
Under the Right of Public Access, anyone is entitled
to hike through forests and fields and pick berries
and mushrooms, without asking the landowner’s
permission, but this right also carries with it an
obligation to respect the natural environment and
private property.
Among the Swedish national emblems are the
blue and yellow flag, two coats of arms, the Three
Crowns and the national anthem.
10 INNOVATIONS,
you probably didn’t know were Swedish
From Anders Celsius’s thermometer in the 1700s
to Skype in 2003, Sweden has long been a country
that breeds innovation.
The Global Innovation Index 2012 ranked
Sweden as the most innovative country within the
European Union.
New innovators are created at Swedish universities.
It may have to do with an educational system that
incubates business startups, the free-thinking
democratic Swedish society that encourages
research and development, the prestigious Nobel
Prizes handed out every December and the
challenging weather that fosters resourcefulness,
sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives.
Automatic identification systems
Getting completely lost is difficult nowadays thanks
to global positioning systems (GPS), which are now
an essential part of our daily lives, embedded in
various technologies from smartphones to in‐car
navigation systems. Swedish inventor Håkan Lans
is credited with taking GPS technology one step
further to create automatic identification systems
(AIS), now widely used in the shipping industry for
tracking ships and vessel traffic.
Adjustable wrench
A staple in many toolboxes, the adjustable wrench
or spanner, also popularly called “monkey wrench”
and known in some countries as an “English key”,
often comes in very handy during do-it-yourself
projects. While the first incarnation of this spanner
was originally invented in 1842 by British engineer
Richard Clyburn, today’s adjustable wrench,
sometimes known as a “Swedish key”, is attributed
to Johan Petter Johansson, a Swedish inventor who
improved upon Clyburn’s original concept and
patented it in 1891.
Zip
The modern-day zip as we know it was improved
upon and developed by Swedish-American
inventor Gideon Sundbäck from an earlier,
less effective model, in 1913. Sundbäck’s newly
redesigned version, called the “separable fastener”,
was patented in 1917 and features interlocking
teeth pulled together and apart by a slider.
Tetra Pak
Thanks to the revolutionary paper-based packaging
system Tetra Pak, we can now carry our milk home
from the shop in cartons instead of glass bottles.
Conceptualized in 1946 by Erik Wallenberg and
produced by Ruben Rausing, Tetra Pak’s technology
is used for storing and distributing liquids, semiliquids
and dairy products.
Three-point seatbelt
Now a standard requirement in every passenger
vehicle, saving around one life every six minutes,
the three-point seatbelt was developed by Swedish
inventor and safety engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959
for Volvo. It’s designed in a Y shape to spread out
energy across a moving body during an accident.
HIV tracker
A recent addition to the list of Swedish inventions
is the HIV tracker: a sensitive device used for
mapping out and detecting the spread of HIV
and other viruses. Conceptualized by Doctor of
Biotechnology Martin Hedström and his team at
Lund University, the device can detect extremely
low concentrations of poisons, viruses or other
substances in liquids – which also makes it
potentially invaluable for fighting bioterrorism.
Ultrasound / ECG
Ultrasound is so integral to healthcare today that it is
hard to remember a time when it didn’t exist. Along
with German researcher Carl Hellmuth Hertz,
Swedish physician lnge Edler devised the modern
day echocardiograms – a Doppler ultrasound
of the heart – that are integral to monitoring
cardiovascular health. This invention netted both
Hertz and Edler a highly coveted Albert Lasker
Clinical Medical Research Award in 1977.
Hövding bicycle helmet
To help combat the issue of people not using
bicycle helmets, Swedish company Hövding has
developed the cyclist’s equivalent of a vehicle
airbag: an “invisible” helmet that inflates within 0.1
seconds and protects the head before impact. This
helmet for the vain, which is worn around the neck
as a collar that blends in with clothing, has sensors
that detect any erratic patterns in the cyclist’s
movements and deploy the airbag immediately
when they sense an accident.
Pacemaker
In 1958, Rune Elmqvist developed a battery-run
artificial pacemaker, which was used for the very
first pacemaker operation, carried out by surgeon
Åke Senning at Karolinska University Hospital
in Stockholm. The pacemaker is placed under
the heart patient’s skin and the electrical pulses
it generates ensure that muscles expand and
contract normally, regulating the heart rate.
Power Trekk
The futuristic-sounding PowerTrekk is a portable
charger that uses eco-friendly fuel cell technology
to convert hydrogen into electricity. By adding
one tablespoon of water along with the fuel pack
to the charger, you can connect any compatible
electronic device – mobile phones, GPS, laptops,
digital cameras – to the PowerTrekk to instantly
charge it.
