HORSE HERO
Top
Dollar VI
The ‘XXL’ puissance winner with
incredible self-belief
WHILE only nine years old, Top
Dollar VI is a horse whose raw
talent earmarks him as a potential
world class contender.
Although the rangey chestnut’s
rideability still needs honing,
his early appearances on the
international circuit have shown
he has ability to burn. At Olympia
in December, he stood outright
winner in the puissance before
producing an impressive fourfault
round over a demanding
World Cup track.
“I’ve been lucky to have had
some very good horses but when
I jumped the World Cup at
Olympia, it felt the easiest it’s
ever felt, even if it wasn’t the most
controlled round,” says his rider
Laura Renwick.
“The feeling ‘Dollar’ gives you
over a fence is phenomenal, it just
doesn’t take anything out of him.
I don’t think there’d be a course in
the world he couldn’t jump.”
As well as his awesome scope,
Dollar’s fearless temperament also
stands in his favour.
“Sometimes he can land
himself in trouble but because he
has the ability to prop himself,
he can always get out of it. He
has incredible self-belief — he
doesn’t think there’s anything he
can’t do,” says Laura.
While the 17.2hh can be “a bit
bolshy” in his stable, he thrives in
his job.
“After half an hour in the field,
he wants to come in but when
you’re riding him, that’s when he’s
at his happiest,” Laura adds.
Laura and her husband John
had tried to buy Dollar’s dam,
Elegant C, as a four-year-old
and had continued to follow her
career. They bumped into her
owner Sue Clark at Scope, and
discovered she had bred two colts
from the mare — three-year-old
Dollar and two-year-old Kankan,
his half-brother by Kannan.
“His dam was an out-andout
winner,” says John. “We saw
some video of the colts and liked
Dollar — he had the same sire as
Oz De Breve, who we’d sold, and
we thought he’d be like him except
that he turned out to be XXL.”
A big but weak youngster,
Dollar was kept as a stallion
until he was four years old (the
Renwicks have retained some
semen) and has been produced
slowly. He was competed as a
young horse by Claire Gredley and
Emily Mason, finishing 13th in the
2016 Talent Seekers final at Horse
of the Year Show (HOYS).
“He’s not our normal type but
we’re happy with what we’ve got.
He’s a big horse with lots of scope
and a strong chance of being a
team prospect,” John adds. H&H
“He’s come from a couple of
big shows and you can see he’s
competition fit. Ideally you’d like
to see more weight and topline on
him, and some better definition
behind,” says showjumper Peter
Charles. “That said, he’s jumping
at a high level and he’s not
struggling for scope or power.
“The problem he has at the
moment is in shortening down a
distance. As well as his size, he
does stand with his leg a little set
back behind — ideally you’d like
to see that set further under him.
From his stance you can see he’s
a big, rangey horse that’s built to
have a very big stride.”
