There were doubles by members of the same family at the first JAS events of
2018, while a new baby and scholarships are in the mix for the eventing world
Keeping the wins in the family
daughter Lucy took the BE90.
“Lucy’s win was more
impressive as she had a lot more
competitors,” said Nicola, who
had a wide-margin victory in an
exclusive field of three.
Lucy, 11, and Charlie Go Go
finished on their style mark of six
to beat 29 other pairs.
“He’s awesome, an adorable
little cob,” said Lucy of the
14.2hh pony she teamed up with
last spring.
Nicola added that Simon
Grieve, who was judging, was
obviously smitten.
“He wrote on the sheets,
‘Charlie’s awesome’ and ‘I’m
a Charlie fan’,” she said.
Nicola’s mount was also
a pony, the 14.2hh Connemara
stallion Glencarrig Dolphin, by
Coosheen Stormboy. The rider is
best known for standing the late
Mill Law and she still has two Mill
Law broodmares whom she is
now putting on this Connemara,
who had 47 mares last year.
“We get a lot of grassroots
people who have a nearly
thoroughbred mare and want
a 15.2hh pocket rocket,” she said.
“He seems to be throwing really
nice stock.” H&H
Alice Tregoning, 13, and Uncle Patsy triumph in the BE90 at Hartpury
FAMILY doubles were a theme
at the early Baileys Jumping
& Style (JAS) events, the indoor
arena eventing series run by
British Eventing.
At Hartpury on 6 January, the
Tregoning sisters scored a win
apiece, with Jessica taking the
BE90open and Alice the BE90.
Jessica, 18, has been riding the
14.2hh I Dunno (Mully) since May
last year and he is seven this time.
“I have always done JAS with
my ponies and was second in the
BE100 final in 2016 on Benjamin
Bunny V,” said Jessica. “Mully
hasn’t done much so it’s really
good for him to get the experience
and the judges’ feedback is useful.”
Alice, 13, has had Uncle
Patsy — another 14.2hh — for
four months.
“JAS has really helped our
partnership as I trust him now to
skinnies and corners,” she said.
“He’s fun to ride and quick, with
a neat jump, which helps our
style mark.”
The sisters juggle riding
with studying at Godolphin
School in Wiltshire.
At Arena UK a week later
(13 January), Nicola Baguley
won the BE100open, while her
Amy and Austin O’Connor welcomed son Alfie Frank Alexander on
20 January at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxon. He weighed in at
8lb 10oz. “He was born 54 hours after my waters broke — I think he
was a little too cosy,” said Amy.
THE Horse Trials Support
its 2018 training scholarships
to Alex Bragg and Laura
Collett (above). The successful
candidates were selected from
a shortlist of 12 announced at
the start of the 2017 season
and the HTSG worked with
data analytics firm EquiRatings
to ensure a thorough analysis
of 2017 results supported the
selection process.
EI JUDGES’
QUALIFICATIONS
EVENTING IRELAND (EI) is
tightening its rules so that
dressage judges must be on
the current year’s judges’ list
of Dressage Ireland, British
Dressage or the FEI (dressage
and eventing). Until now,
unlisted or de-listed judges
have been able to judge EI90
or EI100 classes. For 2018,
non-listed judges can
adjudicate E90 classes only,
but from next year they cannot
preside over any class.
