We live in a sound bite world. Television advertisers talk fast for 

30 seconds, cable news tells all we need to know in 30-minute 

broadcasts, and newspaper headline writers attempt to capture 

the essential essence of a complex story in seven sensational 

words or less. Many people decry both the pervasiveness and 

the limitations of the 140 character text, the Facebook© status 

line, or the one-sentence tweet. 

if you have been around teenagers recently, you know that they 

converse with each other via texting on their mobile phones. 

Telephone calls are apparently too much trouble, and email is 

only used as a last resort (or to communicate with their 

grandparents in Florida.) 

What happened, members of older generations will ask, to long 

letters, great speeches, artfully articulated editorials, and carefully 

researched papers that conveyed meaning and passion and 

moved people to tears and to action? How can great ideas be 

formulated, argued, and communicated among our texting, 

YouTube-watching, remote control-wielding, thumb-typing 

younger generations? 

Perhaps on more careful reflection, this younger generation has 

found technology that supports and encourages a larger truth— 

great meaning can be found in simple words shared between 

people who have a common understanding and a shared belief. 

in Gospel accounts, Jesus often gave his disciples the most 

powerful lessons in simple language. The passage, found to 

the left, from the Gospel of luke is only 119 characters—it’s 

tweet-ready! 

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children 

of God.” Matthew 5:9. Jesus’ words, just 69 characters in all, was 

repeated by sister Dorothy stang, snDden ’49 to the men who 

would take her life in February 2005 in the rainforest of Brazil. 

“This is my body which will be given for you; do this in memory 

of me.” luke 22:19. again, only 69 characters. Perhaps Jesus could 

express great meaning in few words to his friends because of the 

time he spent with them talking, listening, praying, and simply 

being together. and perhaps those simple words today continue 

to convey power and truth and compel action on our part 

because we have come to believe. 

We continue Jesus’ mission today at Chaminade Julienne, a mission 

formed by Catholic Tradition and shaped and emboldened by the 

Marianist and notre Dame charisms. We sometimes use simple 

phrases to describe our work and commitment that could be 

viewed as simplistic if not for the deeper understanding shared 

by people who care about this great place. This understanding is 

borne of experience, reflection, conversation, and collaboration. 

Our mission statement calls CJ an “educational community of 

faith,” a phrase of only 30 characters that recognizes that great 

learning happens when people endeavor together to recognize 

and celebrate the goodness of God. The tagline you may often 

see on our publications and advertising, “Catholic faith, excellent 

academics, inspired community” reminds each of us that we are 

joined—graduates, parents, friends, teachers, and staff—in holy 

work to help young people discover how God is calling them to 

serve His people. 

so, as you read through this annual report, i urge you to see 

the name of each benefactor and recognize that one name 

often represents the belief and commitment of so many 

other members of that same family. review the educational 

experience of our teachers and sense a deep and expanding 

commitment to intellectual curiosity and faithful living. read 

the simple summaries of the accomplishments of the young 

men and women who attend CJ and picture hours spent in 

the classroom, laboratory, library, and practice venues. 

For those who know Chaminade Julienne well, it should be 

inspiring to find deep meaning and great truth in a tagline or a 

simple list of names. as we work together to forge a bold future 

for our students and broad school community, we know that 

such truth in simple phrases will only continue to be found as 

members of the CJ family continue to come together, to use their 

gifts of time, talent, and treasure, and to pray for one another. 

“For when two or three are gathered in my name, there am i in 

the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20. 79 characters. 

People who care about one another and share a common bond 

often need few and simple words to share what is in their hearts.

endowment investments reflect an aspect of the stability and strength 

of our financial foundation. annually, approximately 4% to 5% of the 

endowment funds are available for use to support the budget operations. 

Funds from the endowments support specified programs, scholarships 

or general operating needs based upon the endowment terms. CJ 

endowment investments are managed either by CJ directly, with the 

guidance of the Financial Advisory Council of The Board of Trustees 

and professional investment managers, or by the Dayton Foundation as 

indicated. a growing CJ endowment base will help to supplement other 

budgetary revenue needs and provide greater stability for the future.

CJ provides an incredible opportunity for students to witness the socio-economic, 

racial, and cultural differences of our community. This environment challenges 

students to learn more than just lessons in textbooks. I believe this experience 

is what has made CJ special for the past 160 years. 

as Catholic educators, we commit to serving the needs of the students in 

a faith-filled environment. Daily, students are challenged to recognize and 

build a framework to grow and exercise their unique blend of talents. This 

past school year, I was fortunate to witness a student’s choice to transform 

her academic path. 

Mari (Hailu ‘10) came to math class with a slightly different math background 

than her peers. With the recommendation of her guidance counselor, she 

chose to accelerate her math placement. The first part of the year was a 

struggle and was pushed to quickly master new concepts. There were days 

when she came to class looking very tired. In addition to time spent clarifying 

concepts and completing homework from all classes, she also spent a considerable 

amount of time preparing for her piano recital—one of her passions. It 

took the majority of the school year for Mari to feel confident with the material, 

but her self-efficacy was remarkable. Before graduation, she let me know how 

thankful she was that she was challenged, better preparing her for college. 

Mari’s story is just one of the many successes that energize our educational 

community. When students embrace the CJ challenge and the charisms of the 

Marianists and the Sisters of notre Dame de namur, they are forever changed.

“We have been moved by the increased support of our fellow alumni and 

parents in these challenging economic times where support for the annual

We are honored and excited to accept the position 

of 2011 annual Fund Chairs for Chaminade Julienne 

Catholic High School. as current parents and alumni 

of CJ we see first-hand the impact that gifts to the 

annual fund have for the students and their families. 

We have been moved by the increased support of 

our fellow alumni and parents in these challenging 

economic times where support for the annual Fund 

has increased each of the past three years. This is a 

testament to the strength and commitment of the 

CJ community to the school’s mission and their 

ability to successfully administer that mission. 

Our daughter, Clare, began her CJ experience 

last year and as parents we have been impressed 

with the quality of education and care that the CJ 

faculty and staff has shown her. We are excited for 

our other two children, Margaret ’15, and Joe ’17, to 

become Eagles soon. They will be given a Catholic 

educational experience which will prepare them to 

become successful in all facets of their life.

a GOlDen GiFT ‘59 

The 50 th reunion for the Class of 1959 was truly a 

night to remember. Over 200 graduates of Chaminade, 

Julienne and St. Joseph’s gathered at nCR Country 

Club and the Dayton Women’s Club on September 

19, 2009 to celebrate their golden anniversary of 

their high school graduation. 

In honor of their anniversary, several members of the 

class organized a class gift to be given to Chaminade 

Julienne. Throughout the year, committee members 

Ron Deger, ned Sifferlen, Patricia Monaghan, Bill 

Kussman, Patricia Bell, and Judy Bittner called on 

their classmates to encourage them to participate. 

Their efforts paid off when they exceeded their 

goal of raising $59,000 in honor of the Class of ’59. 

“Our class has proven to be exceedingly generous 

over the years, but in celebration of our 50th, our 

class went over the top in demonstrating their support 

for CJ,” said Sifferlen. “This gift is a real testament to 

the impact our experiences at Chaminade, Julienne 

and St. Joseph had for each of us.”

Chaminade Julienne launched the STEMM initiative 

February 2009 and invited me as one of several 

alumni for their guest speaker series. as an alumnus 

preparing to celebrate my 50th reunion this fall, I was 

thrilled to see the implementation of the STEMM 

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and 

Medicine) program. This program has moved CJ to 

the forefront of education in Catholic schools in Ohio. 

When students are given the opportunity to learn in 

a hands-on environment, they are more likely to be 

enthusiastic about the subject. The professionals 

that come to speak to CJ students encourage them 

to participate in the demonstrations and you can see

Topics have ranged from how to start your own 

chemical company, to the examination of a human 

brain under the guidance of a neuroscientist. CJ’s 

resources—with its pool of alumni and connection 

to uD—is unrivaled and brings in a wide variety of 

presenters who personally share in the Marianist 

and notre Dame education of today’s students. This 

is one of the components that make the CJ STEMM 

program unique and impossible to replicate. 

These inspiring enrichment opportunities paired 

with the focused curriculum of the STEMM program 

will encourage the young inventors, doctors, 

engineers, and entrepreneurs to dream. We should 

all be proud to be alumni of Chaminade Julienne 

because of its continued commitment to educate

Blessings are all around Chaminade Julienne 

Catholic High School. Being a teacher, coach, and 

club moderator, I have an opportunity to witness 

them every day. From the English student who 

finally understands a concept, to the cross country 

runner who has a personal breakthrough, these 

blessings can come from anyone at any time. 

One of the biggest blessings that I have experienced 

at CJ is through working with the Marianist lIFE 

(living in Faith Experiences) program. I can look 

back over the past four years and see how it is 

changing the lives of the students who are involved. 

lIFE is a student-led faith community where young 

adults with an interest in developing their faith can 

gather to share their experiences in high school. The 

group provides an outlet for students to be themselves 

and know that they will be accepted in a 

special way. 

The annual Marianist lIFE summer retreat is a 

particular experience that demonstrates the impact 

this program can have on students. Students from

Growing up I was very blessed that my parents sent me and my three sisters to 

Catholic Schools, from Kindergarten all the way through College. looking back, I 

realize and appreciate the sacrifices they made to make that possible. The 

commitment and dedication my parents demonstrated led me to want to teach in 

Catholic Schools and now desire to send my own children to Catholic Schools. 

The experiences I had at Chaminade Julienne have forever impacted my life. The 

diversity it offers can’t be found anywhere else. I am so grateful to have had the 

opportunity to be educated at a school that instills a sense of community and 

belonging. The tradition and values CJ stands for makes me proud to be an Eagle. 

The school’s emphasis on ministry and service to those within our community 

and outreach to others take a special place in my heart. The integration of these 

values in my high school education has led me to seek ways to volunteer in my 

community and church in Cincinnati. I am actively involved in St. Columban 

Parish, and know this kind of involvement is something that I am passing along 

to my twin sons, Jacob and Joshua, even at an early age as they see that I am 

active in my commitment to help others. 

as a graduate of CJ, I am encouraged by the continuing efforts of the faculty 

and staff to promote opportunities for service to students. Hearing about the 

incredible number of volunteer hours that last year’s students gave to the 

Dayton region—and around the world—spreads hope and carries on the 

lasting values of Chaminade Julienne.

as a 14-year-old freshman entering 

Chaminade Julienne 10 years ago, I 

could only dream of what was 

possible in my future. My experience 

at CJ not only prepared me to realize 

that dream, but it opened up so much 

more. God has blessed me with an ability 

to play basketball at the highest level. It is a 

game that I love and one that has afforded me 

some tremendous opportunities. Following my 

graduation from CJ, I proceeded on to graduate 

from Xavier university after receiving a full 

scholarship. I traveled the world, and now play 

professionally in the nBa for the Charlotte Bobcats. 

Throughout these experiences, the lessons I learned 

at CJ have been with me throughout it all. 

When I first arrived at Xavier, I recognized immediately 

that I had been given a leg up over my classmates 

because of my education at CJ, but it was much 

more than that. The teachers and staff at CJ who 

believed in me taught me the importance of making 

a positive contribution to the community. I learned 

the value of embracing diverse culture, and how 

important it is to care about those around me.

My fondest memory of CJ is when I had the 

opportunity to go on the Kairos retreat my senior 

year where all the lessons I had learned over the 

past four years came to light. This retreat along 

with the hundreds of other experiences helped to 

shape the man I am today. I feel extremely proud 

and blessed to call myself a graduate of Chaminade 

Julienne, and no matter what uniform I wear, I am 

always an Eagle at heart.

One of the things I find most amazing about Chaminade Julienne is that there 

always seems to be something for everyone. Getting involved in clubs, sports, 

music, theater, or volunteer opportunities is so important in order to make the 

high school experience complete. Each group at CJ builds on the charisms of 

the Marianists and the Sisters of notre Dame through prayer, community building, 

acceptance of diversity, service, and development of the whole person—mind, 

body, and soul. 

along with teaching social studies, I moderate Student Council. We do many 

things to enhance student life, build school spirit, and develop strong, 

positive, Christian leaders. Whether it is when we plan homecoming, 

Christmas, prom, or the parent dances, spirit week, pep rallies, the fall 

bonfire, monthly staff appreciation activities—to let our faculty 

know how much we appreciate all that they do—quarterly 

service projects such as our blood drive, leadership 

training, or specific class projects, our goal is always 

the same. We help make the CJ experience for 

everyone the best it possibly can be! 

I recently received a thank you note from two 

former students who just got married. In it, they sum 

up what we all hope to accomplish at CJ. They write, 

“We have so many great memories of CJ and of Student 

Council. Thank you for all that you taught us inside and outside 

the classroom.” This note reflects the lifelong, positive 

connection our students, alumni, parents, and faculty have 

with being Chaminade Julienne Eagles.

The program informs senior students about how their education was made 

possible, in part, by gifts from alumni, parents and friends to the annual Fund. 

Weeks before their graduation last spring, the Class 

of 2010 initiated a program which will impact the 

future of Chaminade Julienne for the rest of their 

lives. Because more than one fourth of the class 

had telephoned alumni during the annual Fund 

phonathon effort, they gained an understanding 

of the impact of the annual Fund. Several seniors 

approached Mike lehner, assistant director of 

development, with an idea to jump start their 

participation as contributing alumni through a 

program that came to be known as Pledge It Forward. 

The program informs senior students about how 

their education was made possible, in part, by gifts 

from alumni, parents 

and friends to the annual Fund. The class was then 

asked to make a pledge of $75 to be paid over the 

next five years, to ensure that the classes that follow 

them would feel the same support. The results of 

the program were astonishing. 

Of the class, 142 members participated in the 

program, which means they will have the highest 

annual Fund participation rate of any class— 

surpassing the next closest class by nearly 20%. 

When the gifts have all been completed five years 

from now, the class will have contributed $10,400 

to the annual Fund and will have confirmed their 

commitment to support CJ for years to come. 

The students presented Dan Meixner, CJ 

president, with a check for the total 

amount pledged by their class at 

their senior breakfast on their last 

day. “I am touched and inspired by 

the creativity and generosity of 

our most recent graduates,” 

Meixner said. “They made CJ 

a better place while they 

were students, and have 

chosen to join their fellow 

alumni and alumnae by 

investing in the future of the 

school and the students 

who will follow them.”

On December 2, 2009, we welcomed our first child, Quinn Michael, into the 

world. Our son’s birth marked a new chapter in our lives, but the story of our 

lives together began many years ago at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High 

School. My husband and I first met in 1996 when we were both accepting 

scholarships to CJ. We were introduced to each other by our older siblings, 

friends who had met at CJ. That same year, Mike and I attended the homecoming 

dance together as friends. We remained friends throughout high school and 

college, and our relationship grew into something more. On July 5, 2008, we 

were married at Emmanuel Catholic Church. 

now that we have Quinn, we often talk about his future. We already know that 

we are going to send him to a Catholic grade school and then on to Chaminade 

Julienne. He will be in great company. In our family, we have siblings, parents, 

grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who are alumni of CJ and its 

predecessor schools. We know the caliber of people that CJ produces and we 

are eager for our son to be a part of that legacy. 

It is easy to understand why our own parents chose to send us to CJ. Both 

of our families have always placed a high importance on our Catholic faith, 

religious values and morals, and personal character. It is a legacy that we are

as we in the Chaminade Julienne community celebrate our 160/125 anniver- 

saries, I encourage all to take time to reflect on the legacy that the founding 

Sisters gifted generations of students with the establishment of notre Dame 

academy 125 years ago. The unique elements that make CJ such a special 

place can be tied to their decision to build the school on the corner of ludlow 

and Franklin Streets in 1886. 

The commitment of the Sisters of notre Dame de namur and the Society of 

Mary to our downtown location has been a crucial element to sustaining 

the diverse cultural experience for the student body at CJ. This unique 

opportunity becomes more valuable every day to our students, as our 

world continues to become more global. In addition to the emphasis 

CJ has placed on maintaining a diverse student population, it continues 

to graduate students who have an understanding of the world’s 

social justice issues, and who are armed with the courage and 

understanding to create change in those places.

new assignment with the Marianist Province of 

the united States, our commitment to Chaminade 

Julienne’s mission of providing students with an 

excellent Catholic educational experience remains 

as strong as ever. 

That commitment continues to grow. The student 

experience at Chaminade Julienne has been deeply 

enriched by the introduction of a new STEMM 

curriculum, the enhancement of athletic facilities 

and a renewed dedication to providing students 

with opportunities to minister and serve locally and 

around the world. The university of Dayton has 

dramatically expanded the campus and grown in 

prestige as a top-tier national Catholic university. 

More than ever, the world needs the type of 

education our two campuses provide. In the 

Marianist tradition, we are committed to connecting

When we began the new school year 

last fall, I sensed that we were facing 

the future with growing energy and 

excitement in our CJ community. 

Excitement was building as the first CJ 

campus improvements were taking 

shape following several years of quiet 

development. 

academic programs continued to be strengthened as 

exemplified by our CJ sTeMM program entering its second 

year of implementation, and our ministry and service program 

sustained its preeminent position as a foundation for our 

Catholic education mission. 

as we reflect upon the 2009-2010 school year, i am very 

proud to have seen first-hand, in my first year as chair of 

the Board of Trustees, the tremendous progress we have 

made, which we celebrate in the preceding pages of this 

annual report. They are many and they are exciting 

indications of what can be achieved as we, together, forge 

the future in the coming years. Certainly we have also 

experienced challenges, and i believe we have faced them 

with excellence guided by the charisms of our sponsoring 

religious congregations. 

all of us in the CJ community who support the school have 

good reason to be inspired and affirmed by the national, state 

and local recognitions that our academic programs have 

received this year. likewise, the student accomplishments in 

athletics, clubs, and the arts have been similarly recognized 

for excellence, and we can all be proud they are a vibrant 

part of our students’ experience. More than anything, our 

coordinated religious education and ministry and service 

programs continue to energize our students in their spiritual 

and faith formation. Our teachers, staff, and administrators 

ensure that our Catholic mission is a cornerstone of 

everything that makes up the CJ learning experience. 

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, i thank the thousands 

of CJ supporters who are recognized in this Annual report. 

i sense that the energy and excitement in our community 

are even stronger as we now look forward to a new school 

year. We all have reason to be very proud and thankful that 

we are Chaminade Julienne.
