Upcoming badminton tournaments short list The following is a listing of upcoming badminton tournaments in the northeast, with their most likely dates. More details will be published as the dates approach. Jan 29–31 Connecticut Open (Baltic, CT) Feb 6–7 Maugus Championship “2009” A Event Feb 13–15 Junior International Trials (Orange County Badminton Club) Feb 19–21 NYCB Invitational Team Tournament April 2–4 NYC Badminton Club Annual Tournament Jun 18–20 NYC Badminton Downey Cup (3rd annual), NY Open Tournament Results 2009 New England Junior Open Badminton Tournament The 2009 New England Junior Open, held on November 21–22 at Marblehead, was a great success. There was a big turnout with many strong players. The Maugus Junior participants of all ages did a fantastic job. In the younger age groups, Isaac Ehrlich made it to the semi-finals of the U11 singles; Adi and Yamini Yedetore were second in the U11 mixed doubles; and Isaac and Adi achieved third place in doubles. Even though these kids have not been training very long, they played very well and displayed all the skill that they had learned. In the U13 singles, Chun-Lok Lo made it to the semi-finals, and he and Peter Waller made it to the doubles finals, where they lost in a very well fought match. Alan Shekhtman and Nicholas Waller dominated the U15 singles placing first and second respectively. This was a great accomplishment for Nicholas, who, on the way to the final, beat many players who have been training much longer than him. Phyllis Lin won the U15 singles handily, and Sarah Zhang played many tough matches to achieve third place. Phyllis also won first place in singles in the U17 division, beating people a lot older than herself. Doria Chen and Sarah were second in the combined U11–15 Girls doubles—they played wonderfully throughout the entire tournament. U17 Boys singles was dominated by Lee Chern and Alan, who had a very exciting three set final, with Lee prevailing in the third. They then teamed up to get a close second in the doubles; the fatigue from their singles matches was definitely a factor in their loss. Danny Berdichevsky and Lee were first and second, respectively, in the U19–22 boys singles, and also had a close final. Daniel Berdichevsky and Nick Jennings teamed up to win the U19-22 doubles, beating every team easily. On another note, Phyllis Lin won the much respected sportsmanship award. This is the second year in a row that a Maugus Junior won this title. Overall they represented the club and themselves extremely well. 2010 Jerry Toms US Senior International Badminton Tournament The 2010 Jerry Toms US Senior International Badminton Tournament took place January 5–9 in Miami Lakes, Florida. A contingent of Maugus members went down to enjoy the sun, play some badminton, and bring home a few medals: 35+ Women’s doubles Ai Lean Lim & Mette Ravn Semifinalists 40+ Men’s doubles Ravi Raveendran & Pratap Joshi Semifinalists 45+ Women’s doubles Ai Lean Lim & Alice Kwok-Ho Semifinalists 50+ Men’s singles Laszlo Drimusz Runner up 50+ Men’s doubles Laszlo Drimusz & partner Winners 50+ Women’s doubles Alice Kwok-Ho & partner Third place 50+ Mixed doubles C. 2010 National Capital Open Badminton Tournament The 2010 National Capital Open took place January 15–17, 2010 at the University of Maryland. Several Maugus Members made it to the medal rounds: Maugus 4.5 Open Team A Men’s singles Ajit Umrani Winner Pashupati Paneru Runner up A Men’s doubles Sunil Polineni & Ajit Umrani Runners up Senior Men’s singles Andrey Golikov Semi-finalist Senior Women’s doubles Ai Lean Lim & partner Semi-finalist Senior Mixed doubles Ai Lean Lim & Pratap Joshi Winners Squash League Results Since returning from the holiday break your Maugus Club 4.5 league team has split each of two very competitive matches against Milton Academy and Tennis and Racquet Club (a perennial powerhouse). We are presently tied for fifth place in this league of 12 teams (only the top 4 teams make the playoffs this year). The remainder of the season sees us hosting rival Cross Courts (1/20), at Boston Sports Club Allston (1/27), then home versus [another rival] Concord Acton Squash Club (2/3), University Club (2/10) and Squashbusters (2/17). Maugus 50+ Team (AKA, From the diary of Keith Munsell) On January 3, 2010 the 50+ traveled to Cross Courts. There is good news and there is bad news. The good news is that Mark Dickenson continues in his winning ways, traveling to Cross Courts on a Sunday to play his opponent on the opposition home court yet prevailing 3–1. The bad news is that Mark’s was our only victory. Playing at number two Nana Poku lost 3–1, as did diarist Keith Munsell playing at number four against Dennis ‘the traitor’ Philbin, and , playing at number three, John Totman lost 3–0. Union Boat Club came to the Maugus Club on Monday evening January 11, 2010 for a battle between the state ranked number 5 team (Union) and the number 4 team (Maugus) and Maugus prevailed. Playing at number one after getting off a 20 hour plane ride from somewhere in Africa, Martin Deale lost to Archie McIntyre 2–3 in a hard, closely fought match. Playing at number two, the hard hitting (should I say smashing) Nana Poku bested Randy Hawthorne 3–0. At number three John (lob and drop you til you die) Totman bested Bob Littlehale 3–1, and at number four Larry Stone won by default 3–0. Thus Maugus solidified their hold on the number four league standing. On January 25, the Maugus 50+ team played defending champions and current first place holders, Boston Racquet Club, and was shamefully routed 0–5. At number one, Mark Dickenson went down 2–3 to Whitney Boucher in the closest match of the evening. At number 2, Martin Deale went down 0–3 to Jose Ferrao. At number three, Larry Stone went down 1–3 to Ripley Hastings. Finally, at number four John Totman went down 0–3 to John Tittmann (a case of tits over tots!). The amusing match was Larry Stone’s, where he lost 12–15, won 15–0, Lost next two 15–10. The second game goes into the category of Ripley’s believe it or not. The 50+ Team is fighting for a playoff spot. They are one point ahead of Union Boat Club. The also have one more match left, and both are versus the number two team in the league, Concord Acton. USA Badminton Region 1 2010 Annual Meeting The USA Badminton Region 1 (Northeast) Annual Meeting will take place 10:00 am – 4:30 pm on February 6, 2010 in New York City. Elections fro various positions will take place, and meeting discussion topics will include organizing coaching certification programs, organizing umpire and referee training clinics, coordination of tournament schedules, and regional cooperation and information sharing for the development of new badminton Clubs and facilities.
