A Blonde Sports Joke
A blonde went to her first football game and later shared her experience with friends: “Oh it was great, I
loved watching those handsome men in tights . . . nice bods and plenty of rippling muscles. But the game
was boring.”
“Why?” asked her friend.
“Oh Well,” she continued, “At the beginning of the game, The referee flipped a quarter to see who would
kick off first. Then for the rest of the game, everybody was yelling—get the quarter back, get the quarter
back, get the quarter back. So I thought to myself, gosh it’s just a quarter!”
12 3 − 45 + 6 ∗ 7 ∗ 8 − 9 = 2010
9 + 87 + 65 + 43 21 = 2010
9 + 87 + 65 + 43 2 ∗ 1 = 2010
Happy Numerological New Year!
12 ∗ 34 ∗ 5 − 6 − 7 − 8 − 9 = 2010
Puzzle #60
A primitive horse racing problem: There are 25 horses entered in a speed competition, but a very bad
electrical storm has disrupted all time-keeping devices, and there is therefore no way to measure speed
directly. The race track has only 5 tracks, allowing you to compare the speeds of only five horses at a time.
Challenge: How many races do you need to run in order to discover the fastest 5 horses? It is assumed that
a given horse runs at the exactly the same speed in every race.
Answer to Puzzle #59
Keep your hands close: Recall that we seek the time between 12:01 pm and 6:00 pm at which the total span
of the hour, minute and second hands on the clock face is minimal (the reason we can limit the problem to
times before 6:00 pm, is that by symmetry—running the clock backwards—there will be an identical, but
mirror-reflected, such occurrence at an equal time interval before 11:59 pm).
