Street east Ryde Council carpark 

site. 

Ryde Mayor Clr Jerome Laxale 

recommended to last night’s Ryde Council 

meeting that $550,000 be allocated to 

design costs and that the new multi storey 

car park be constructed in the term of the 

current Council.

Multi storey car park for Eastwood

said today the short stay car 

park will be built at the current 

site of the Rowe Street east car 

park on Eastwood’s Korean 

shopping village strip and will 

be completed in the current 

term of the council. 

It follows the rejection of a 

long stay commuter car park 

at the site proposed by Premier 

Gladys Berejiklian and Ryde 

MP Victor Dominello prior to 

the last State election and rejected 

by the Korean Chamber 

of Commerce and the local 

community. 

Mayor Laxale said the cost 

will be funded by developer 

contributions to the council. 

Ryde Council is expected to 

agree to $550,000 to be made 

available immediately to fund 

the preparation of a preferred 

design for the provision of 150- 

200 public car parking spaces 

on the existing at-grade Rowe 

Street East car park “to support 

the full and proper functioning 

of the eastern town centre with 

the public car park to specifically 

provide parking for shoppers 

and not commuters”. 

A comprehensive consultation 

process is to be undertaken 

with the community when a 

concept design is available.

The new car park will result 

in the temporary closure of the 

existing site during building 

work. 

The Eastwood community will 

be consulted on a choice of 

concept designs for the new 

car park, with particular emphasis 

on traffic issues.

‘Universal warming 

increasingly severe’ 

Dear Sir, 

I refer to the irresponsible 

and ill-informed comment by 

the editor on the cover of this 

week’s TWT. 

Mr Booth states, in part, “Record 

cold weather and not a 

peep from the global warming/ 

climate change alarmists!” 

How is it that you are living 

in the 21st century and yet still 

don’t know the difference between 

“weather” and “climate”. 

There will always be localised 

weather events during the 

course of any chosen year and 

that means we’ll see a cold 

snap, a heat wave or greater 

than expected rainfall. 

These are weather events! Climate 

change is the global and 

regional patterns that have seen 

long term changes and have 

been greatly exacerbated by 

the increase in carbon dioxide 

and other gases in our atmosphere 

which is primarily caused 

by the burning of fossil fuels. 

This has meant that the ten 

warmest years on record globally 

have all been recorded 

since 1998 and the three warmest 

ever were 2015, 2016 and 

2017. 

The result of this universal 

warming is increasingly severe 

and frequent weather events, 

increased sea levels, increased 

salinity in marginal land and less 

land being suitable for farming 

or animals. 

So the next time you want to 

throw out a statement like that, 

with no basis in fact, please 

don’t!

Unique quilts on display at 

Biennial Hunters Hill Quilt Show 

THE BIENNIAL Hunters 

Hill Quilt Show will 

be taking place again in 

2018, marking the 18th 

year of this local favourite. 

Held in the historic Hunters 

Hill Town Hall, thanks 

to the support of the Hunters 

Hill Council and organised 

by the Hunters Hill 

Quilters, the show will officially 

open on Thursday 

August 9 with the presentation 

of prizes by local 

artist Robyn Ross. 

The show will then be 

open to the public from 

Friday August 10 until 

Sunday August 12. 

For the three days visitors 

are invited to browse, 

admire and critique the 

60 exhibited unique quilts 

made by members of 


group. 

Throughout the show 

visitors can enjoy the 

quilt displays, buy original 

quilts, add to their sewing 

needs from the local quilt 

shop and enjoy tea, coffee 

and local, homemade 

goodies.

show will also be a new 

exhibition for 2018 showcasing 

‘Fiddle mats”, 

sensory mats made with 

lots of textures and fiddly 

bits, designed to provide 

‘Touch Therapy’ for sufferers

became aware of the need 

for ‘Fiddle’ mats in 2016. 

The mats are designed 

to safely stimulate and 

soothe people with Alzheimers, 

dementia, autism or 

head trauma.

are greatly appreciated by

Hunters Hill has been a 

long running issue with 

the closing of an industrial 

site on what is now 

residential lots. 

Prior to the Radium Hill 

Company which refined 

radium and uranium, the 

foreshore hosted a carbolic 

acid plant including a tar 

distilling plant. 

The industrial legacy on 

the foreshore has meant 

some 5000 tonne of contaminated 

soil needs removal 

from the site. 

Contaminants in the soil 

of the foreshore area constitute 

a ‘significant risk of 

harm’ leading to it being 

declared a remediation site 

under the Contaminated 

Land Management Act 

1997. 

Chemicals of Potential 

Concern (COPCs) including 

metals and hydrocarbons 

remaining at the site 

are likely to cause human 

and ecological health risk. 

This includes low level 

radioactive material being 

left on the site. 

The Parliamentary Standing 

Committee No.5 Report 

concluded that the 

need to remediate the land 

was “currently not in dispute”. 

The remediation 

should address all waste 

contaminating the site.

contamination in the river. 

This site is located adjacent 

to Fern Bay foreshore 

and the site having a very 

steep slope presents a 

high erosion hazard and 

soil having a high susceptibility 

to movement by 

rainfall.

DUE TO the nature of the 

contamination and the hydrology 

of the Nelson Parade 

site it is reasonable to 

expect that contaminants 

from the site have been 

and are being washed into 

the Parramatta River either 

through direct deposit of 

contaminated sediment 

or as leachate through 

groundwater movement. 

The chemicals found on 

site can all produce significant 

human health and 

ecological impacts at certain 

levels. They have been 

untreated on site for many 

years and are continuing 

to have an accumulative 

effect on the harbour sediment 

and water quality. 

The role of the Government 

in removing the potential 

pollution of the river 

from the Nelson Parade 

site is an important step 

to reducing contamination 

in the River and Harbour 

sediments. 

The only way for natural 

processes to address the 

problem is to wait until uncontaminated 

sediments 

cover the contaminated 

layer. However, the environmental 

impacts of these 

pollutants are expected to 

continue for decades, if not 

centuries which presents 

an intergenerational burden 

that is unacceptable. 

Complete removal of 

contaminated material 

from this site remains the 

only acceptable solution.

the crucial role of The

opposed the forced 

merger. 

“The Weekly Times 

was there for our community 

at every rally, 

every public meeting 

and supported the 

campaign with editorials 

and news coverage,”

“It raised community 

awareness of what we 

were fighting for and

example of what an independent,

have fought hard and long to remain independent in

that people in pain feel unsupported 

and unheard by the 

government and health professionals, 

and face negative attitudes 

and stigma on all fronts. 

We want to help change this. 

National Pain Week (23 – 29 

Letters to the Editor 

July 2018) is an annual initiative 

of Chronic Pain Australia, 

which aims to destigmatise the 

experiences of people living 

with chronic pain and provide 

an outlet to share their stories 

and experiences with the wider 

community. 

This year’s theme ‘Nothing 

about us without us’, is 

focused on ensuring people 

living with chronic pain have a 

voice and can be heard in any 

public discussions or health 

policy development that impacts 

their lives. 

During National Pain Week, 

the results of the National Pain 

Survey will be available online

people living with chronic 

pain to share their own experiences 

and ideas on the

Property NSW are 

broadening their consultation 

with residents on 

their alternative proposals 

for the remediation of 

Nelson Parade. All of the 

options currently being 

considered would see a 

large part of the residual 


encapsulated on site. 

We recognise this falls 

short of the perfect solution 

which would see all the 


removed from the site. 

But both the major political 

parties oppose the material 

being disposed of at 

the only facility in NSW licensed 

to accept it and any 

Federal Government disposal 

site, which was first 

suggested over 40 years 

ago, isn’t being designed 

to take this type of residual 

material. 

A proposal which (A) saw 

the entire site dedicated in 

perpetuity as a public park 

in Government 

ownership; (B) removed 

the hydro carbons and 

heavy metals from the foreshore 

blocks satisfying 

the EPA’s current Management 

Order; (C) encapsulated 

any residual material 

on the site and adjoining 

properties to a standard 

certified by ANSTO as safe 

for use as open parklands; 

and (D) was 

achieved by a minimalist 

form of encapsulation that 

blended in with the current 

landscape and 

preserved the harbour 

foreshore building line may 

be perfectly adequate to resolve 

the key health 

issues which should be 

our primary concern. 

The alternative proposals 

being developed by Property 

NSW should be assessed 

on their 

environmental merits and 

against the standards of 

a perfectly adequate proposal.

NEW ALDI RHODES OPENS NEXT WEDNESDAY

their new Rhodes store at 8.30am next 

Wednesday August 1.

Hunters Hill Day proclaimed by Council

Hunters Hill Council unanimously proclaimed the day during 

Monday night’s council meeting with July 31 commemorating the 

day last year when the Berejiklian Government’s proposed forced 

merger of the historic municipality with neighbouring Ryde and 

Lane Cove was defeated.

“We are using 

around six per cent of 

the library service, not 

12 per cent and we 

should only be paying 

half the amount 

we do because, as it 

stands, we are donating 

$300,000 to Ryde 

and that is unacceptable 

and we cannot 

afford to keep doing 

that.”

Barry Smith said that 

while he thought Hunters 

Hill is paying too 

much money, the City 

of Ryde is not prepared 

to budge on the 

shared library funding 

agreement. 

Mr Smith said Hunters 

Hill is paying “for 

the entire library service, 

not just Gladesville” 

because Gladesville 

is just a repository 

of the service. 

Councillor Collins 

challenged the General 

Manager’s assessment 

and suggested 

that Hunters Hill look 

into alternative arrangements

neighbouring City of 

Canada Bay and Lane

50 years of heritage 

advocacy this month

Hunters Hill Historical 

Society in future projects. 

Dr Alister Sharp from 

the Trust told Monday 

night’s Hunters 

Hill Council meeting 

it will seek to partner 

the Society in the promotion 

of the famous 

Green Book on local 

heritage as well as the 

collection of oral history. 

He said fighting to 

protect heritage from 

over development and 

inappropriate development 

would be one 

of the Trust’s greatest 

challenges in the next 

half century. 

“The protection of 

heritage is a difficult 

fight made even more 

difficult by this state 

government and the 

job gets harder,” he 

said. 

“I really worry about 

the high rise buildings 

being put up on 

Victoria Road and on 

Epping Road, that is 

not the way to make a 

good society.” 

Dr Sharp said he is 

amazed by Australian 

politicians who go on 

tours of Europe and 

fail to see the importance 

Europeans attach 

to heritage. 

He nonetheless acknowledged 

financial 

support made possible 

through the lobbying

Clubs urged to obtain 

this life saving equipment 

OUR local clubs have been urged to equip their facilities and members with life saving 

defribrillators. 

The Netball Club was 

one of the first local clubs 

to add defribrillators to 

the club medical kit to 

help revive heart attack 

victims. 

Anthony Roberts says 

he applauds the call of 

an off-duty doctor - who 

recently revived two 

Northern Suburbs footballers 

and urged every 

club to take advantage of 

the NSW Government’s 

$4-million Local Sport 

Defibrillators Grant Program. 

“Dr John Galicek who 

plays for St Michael’s FC 

saved the lives of 51-year 

old Nick Schicht and 64- 

year old Ian Rae during 

two separate games in 

the Northern Suburbs 

Football Associations 

over 45’s competition in 

April this year,” Mr Roberts 

said. 

“I congratulate Dr Galicek 

for his valiant efforts 

and both cases serve as 

a powerful reminder of 

why having defibrillators 

installed at playing fields 

and sports facilities is so 

incredibly important.” 

Dr Galicek said the 

availability of the defribrillators 

was critical. 

“In both cases we were 

fortunate there was a defibrillator 

at the field,” he 

said. 

“Nick collapsed after 

the game and didn’t have 

a pulse. 

“An ambulance was 

called and I used the AED 

for several minutes. It was 

a tremendous feeling to 

see his vital signs return.” 

Nick Schicht said he 

owed his life to Dr Galicek. 

“The defibrillator was 

key,” he said. 

“You don’t really understand 

how important they 

are until you need to use 

one. 

“My cardiac arrest 

should be a wake-up call 

for all clubs. 

“You really don’t know 

when it’s going to happen, 

so you should always 

have one.” 

Mr Roberts said clubs 

now have an extra incentive 

to obtain the life saving 

device. 

“Immediate access to 

CPR and defibrillation at 

local sports grounds is 

paramount and now clubs 

can receive 50 per cent 

towards the funding and 

maintenance of an Automatic 

External Defibrillator,” 

he said. 

“Eligible sports clubs 

and organisations can receive 

between $1250 and 

$1900 in funds towards 

the installation and maintenance 

cost of a defibrillator.”

our Neighbourhood 

A while ago, my auntie 

had a bad fall and fractured 

her hip. 

My neighbours were 

expecting their first 

baby girl, and didn’t 

know what to do or 

what to expect. 

Worried, needing reassuring 

advice and medical 

assistance, they 

all ended up in Ryde 

Hospital where they all 

took home something 

in common - a pleasant 

experience provided by 

their professional advice, 

considerate and 

accommodating staff

Ryde Hospital was 

built in 1934 initially as 

the Ryde District Soldiers 

Memorial Hospital 

and in the 1980s, it took

New Blood Test to diagnose melanoma 

AUSTRALIA has the highest rate of melanoma in the world. 

To put it in the context, 

melanoma kills five 

people every day in Australia. 

And it is a frightening 

thing that in people aged 

15-39 it’s more common 

than any other kind of 

cancer. 

Now a new blood test 

that’s just been trialed on 

124 patients has helped 

detect the deadly disease 

in 79 per cent of 

cases. 

This is how it works. 

Your body naturally has 

a cancer surveillance 

system – it is part of your 

immune system. 

Even when melanoma 

is at a microscopic size, 

your body produces antimelanoma 

antibodies to 

destroy the melanoma. 

This blood test will pick 

up the anti-melanoma 

antibodies. 

If you have these antibodies, 

it means you are 

likely to have melanoma, 

and hence the doctor 

needs to look for it. 

Unfortunately, the initial 

research shows that 

we still miss about 20 

per cent of people, so 

we have to go back and 

make it better. However, 

the significance of this 

melanoma blood test is 

enormous. 

“When we can get rid 

of the melanoma and cut 

it out when it’s very very 

thin and less than 1mm 

thickness, people have 

99% chance that nothing 

else will ever happen

marks end of an era 

DOCTOR Lawrence Welyczko, known to many as Dr Laurie, served several 

generations of loyal patients over four decades from his family practice 

in Epping. 

On a recent cold winter 

afternoon, those generations 

came in their droves 

to wish their much loved 

and respected GP, a final 

farewell. 

It was standing room 

only for patients, staff and 

extended family members. 

Many of the assembled 

came bearing gifts with 

flowers, wine and home 

baked goods in profusion. 

He and his loyal receptionist 

Shirley Hill both retired 

on June 8, after working 

together for 26 years 

without a cross word. 

“This was my life and not 

a job. It will be the people 

I will miss the most” he 

said. 

Mrs Hill will now spend 

time with her husband Michael. 

Other long serving 

reception staff and codoctor, 

Marilyn Uebel, will 

all move forward to continue 

service in the medical 

field. 

Dr Laurie attended the 

University of Sydney and 

graduated in 1975. The 

University was significant 

in Dr Laurie’s personal life 

as well, as he met his future 

partner, Connie Katelaris, 

while studying there. 

Laurie went on to join 

the Family Medicine programme 

to train in general 

practice and then worked 

for three years in his own 

country practice in Gundagai. 

Their decision to settle 

in the Epping area allowed 

Connie to practice in her 

chosen specialty in Allergy 

and Immunology. Dr Laurie 

opened his first General 

Practice in Ryde Street, 

Epping in 1982. He soon 

outgrew his rooms as the 

practice blossomed and 

so he moved just around 

the corner to larger premises 

in Boronia Avenue, 

Epping. 

Dr Lauries’s proficiency 

in French, Italian and 

Ukrainian was of benefit to 

several of his patients and 

he was also able to communicate 

with other Slavic 

language speakers. Some 

of Dr Laurie’s patients 

were delivered as babies 

and cared for throughout 

their childhood and adolescence. 

Many returned 

in their adult years for their 

own further care and that 

of their children. 

One patient, on the day 

of Dr Laurie’s farewell 

spoke of their following 

the common wisdom 

“to select a doctor who 

is young with their own 

children who lived in the 

district. That way you will 

have a GP with whom you 

can have a relationship” he 

said. Another talked of 

the “three most important 

professionals in the district 

needing to be your dentist, 

your doctor and your hairdresser”. 

She had been 

“lucky enough to hit the 

jackpot in all three cases”. 

While Dr Laurie told his 

patients he wanted to 

keep practising, his retirement 

at age 71 means that 

he can now take the time 

to travel but also spend 

more time at both his Sydney 

home and that of his 

own children helping them 

with his two grandchildren. 

He will mark the beginning 

of his retirement with a 

family holiday in Italy. Post 

his return, Connie has said 

he will finally have the time 

for dinners with those patients 

who have become 

his friends over this past 

lifetime of care. His own 

children have him diarised 

for as many grandfatherly 

duties as he can accommodate.

Moocooboola Festival to showcase 

the best of our heritage municipality 

MORE THAN 30,000 people are expected to enjoy Hunters Hill’s Moocooboola Festival, which will 

be held at Boronia Park Oval on Sunday August 5 from 9.30am until 4pm. 

This FREE festival is 

one of the largest annual 

events held in The Weekly 

Times territory and showcases 

the talent of dozens 

of young local performers, 

craft makers and community 

organisations. 

It is hosted by Hunters 

Hill Council and is one of 

the largest family orientated

Council removes sign in response to TWT report 

A controversial STOP sign on the corner of Buffalo and Monash 

Roads in Gladesville has been removed in response to residents 

action. 

The sign was recently 

erected on 

Monash Road and 

cars have been 

booked for failing to 

stop there. 

The Weekly Times 

reported on the issue 

(Page 5, July 4) 

where angry residents 

blamed the 

sign for a spat of 

minor accidents and 

motorists confusion 

when attempting 

to turn right from 

Buffalo Road into 

Monash Road. 

Councillor Roy 

Maggio had also 

raised the issue with 

council staff on behalf

Victoria Road. 


Gladesville residents force removal of ‘diabolical’ stop sign 

GLADESVILLE residents backed by The Weekly Times and City of Ryde 

Clr Roy Maggio have been able to get the council to remove a controversial 

STOP sign at the intersection of Monash and Buffalo Roads. 

Councillor Maggio received 

confirmation on 

Thursday the sign would 

be removed, two days after 

he raised the issue as 

an Urgency motion during 

the last council meeting. 

The action responds 

to reports to The Weekly 

Times of car crashes - related 

to the stop sign – 

from local residents who 

said it had been “dangerously” 

placed by council 

workers on busy Monash 

Road to give preferential 

right of way to traffic from 

the less used, adjoining 

Buffalo Road. 

Resident Phil Lown (pictured,

“They are either disregarding 

the stop sign or 

they simply cannot see 

it as the two stop signs

Australian standards,” Mr 

Lown said. 

A study undertaken by 

this newspaper on Thursday 

afternoon confirmed 

that 51 out of one hundred 

peak hour cars completely 

ignored the stop sign, 39 

slowed but did not stop 

and only ten fully stopped 

as directed. 

“At night, when the stop 

sign is less visible, even 

fewer cars stop and they 

completely ignore the 

speed limit, ” one resident 

said 

Some residents said the 

main danger came from 

the confusion of Buffalo 

Road motorists - turning 

right into Monash Road 

- who are cannot see the 

Monash Road stop sign 

which gives them preferential 

right of way. 

“They naturally assume 

they should give way to 

cars on their right, approaching 

from a much 

busier road,” one resident 

said. 

“We’ve seen many cars 

almost collide because no 

one is sure who has the 

right of way.” 

To make a dangerous 

situation worse, Mr Lown 

said some buses are leaking 

oil at the intersection 

which causes cars who 

break suddenly at the intersection 

to skid. 

“You can actually see 

skid marks at the intersection 

and trees which have 

lost their branches as cars 

and buses veer into the 

curb.” 

It is the dangerous situation 

on the curbside that 

concerns local mum Lena 

Candy, pictured. 

“I fear crossing this intersection 

with my child and 

we should never, ever have 

been put in this situation,” 

at all, but we should learn 

from this and get the problem 

fixed before there is a 

fatality,” he said. 

Councillor Maggio 

agreed and welcomed the 

decision to remove the 

sign but wants further action 

taken after consultation 

with residents. 

“What we need immediately 

are speed humps 

a few hundred yards 

from the intersection on 

Monash Road, which will 

at least slow the traffic,” 

he said. 

“We also need to talk 

with those residents who 

tell as these streets have 

become a rat run for cars 

avoiding Victoria Road.” 

Mr Lown agreed. 

”If council will not agree 

to the re-instatement of 

the old system then we 

need to have reduced 

speed limits,” he said. 

“The faster the traffic 

goes, the more horrendous

He would also like to see 

the police and bus drivers 

consulted alongside residents. 

”We have not even 

touched on the property 

value diminution now being 

felt by several residents,” 

he said.

Community Consultation 

A new school in Ryde as part of the 

Meadowbank Education Precinct 

The Department of Education (DoE) is proposing 

redevelopment of the northern portion of 

the Meadowbank TAFE site at Rhodes Street, 

Meadowbank. The project is classified as a State 

Significant Development and is being assessed 

under the Environmental Planning and Assessment 

Act 1979. An Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit 

under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 is 

not anticipated to be required. However, Urbis, on 

behalf of the DoE, invites local Aboriginal people 

with cultural knowledge of the Meadowbank area 

to register as stakeholders to be consulted with for 

the preparation of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage 

Assessment Report. 

Please note that all parties who register will have their 

details forwarded to the Office of Environment and 

Heritage and Local Aboriginal Land Council, unless 

otherwise specified.

our Aboriginal culture 

RESIDENTS at North Ryde’s New Horizons aged care facility 

celebrated NAIDOC Week with a didgeridoo recital. 

Bruce Shillings from Walgett performed 

the recital and demonstrated 

the traditional use of boomerangs 

and other items sacred to Aboriginal 

people. 

“I’ve also brought along a peace 

stick, which is a good mechanism to 

send messages of peace between 

our peoples,” he said. 

“It is very important that I show 

you this because the basis of our 

culture is respect for one another.” 

Mr Shilling explained how conflicts 

are traditionally resolved by a 

ceremonial “fight” after which peace 

is restored. 

“It is unfortunate we can’t do that 

now and send Mr Abbott and Mr 

Turnbull out to (ceremonially) fight 

it out and make peace afterwards,” 

he said. 

He also spoke about tribal totem 

animals and the distinct art of each 

tribe. 

Ryde MP and former NSW Aboriginal 

Affairs Minister Victor Dominello 

attended the event and presented 

New Horizons with an Aboriginal 

flag.

Christianity and our history 

The role that Christianity plays in our heritage and the 

treatment of Christianity by modern historians will be discussed 

at All Saints Church Hall in Hunters Hill on Sunday, 

August 19 from 3.30 pm. 

The event features 

guest speaker 

Joint Associate 

Professor Stuart 

Piggin who recently 

published a book 

titled: “The Fountain 

of Public Prosperity”, 

which asks 

whether our history 

is being re-written 

with the role of 

Christianity being 

ignored in secular 

society? 

Dr Piggin was Director 

of the Centre 

for the History of 

Christian Thought 

and Experience at 

Macquarie University 

(2005–16) and 

Head of the Department 

of Christian 

Thought of the 

Australian College 

of Theology. 

He is also a Fellow 

of the Royal 

Historical Society 

and of the Religious 

History Association 

of Australia and 

was the foundation 

President of the 

Evangelical History 

Association of Australia. 

The controverial 

author lectured in 

Religious History 

in the Universities 

of Wollongong and 

Sydney 1974–1990 

and was Master 

of Robert Menzies 

College at Macquarie 

University, 

1990–2004. 

He has written 

over 100 articles 

for academic journals 

and seven 

books. 

His talk is part 

of the Anglican 

Church “Soundings” 

series of 

talks and seminars 

which discuss important 

issues of 

our day.

Dirty Reds’ home turf 

at Drummoyne Oval in 

support of the LIVIN 

Foundation, an organisation 

that raises 

awareness of mental 

health issues. 

The Drummoyne Rugby 

Club began its support 

of LIVIN in January 

through the tragic loss 

of one of the team’s 

beloved players Patrick 

‘PJ’ Hahn at the age of 

25 last Christmas. 

The Club’s commitment 

to spreading the 

message about speaking 

up about mental 

health has continued 

and officials invite the 

local community to 

come along and support 

their Charity Round 

in support of LIVIN. 

In addition to the five 

rugby matches between

Hunters Hill, there’ll be

Hardacre and Kim Russell and their friend Pat 

Brown (Putney Tennyson) - who compete as 

The Tigers - enjoyed a well deserved victory in 

the recent Inner West Saturday Morning triples 

competition. 

The event takes place over four weeks and there was a 

very close finish on this occasion with two teams having 

four wins. The Tigers team posted four wins +38 and 42 

ends defeating Shirls Girls who chalked up four wins + 31 

and 39 ends. 

It was a second successive title for The Tigers who now 

advance to the Zone playoffs later this year. 

100 year old Morgan 

was believed to 

have been the Sydney 

Cricket Association’s 

oldest surviving 

first grade cricketer 

up until his death last 

month in Concord 

Hospital after a long 

illness. 

Stimson, who skippered 

Balmain to a first 

grade premiership in 

1967-68 during a distinguished 

32-year career, 

died suddenly on July 

19 on the NSW Central 

Coast at the age of 92. 

He was one of the legends 

of Sydney grade 

cricket and led the Tigers 

- who boasted internationals 

in spinner John 

Gleeson, paceman David 

Renneberg and batsmen 

Tony Steele and Ross 

Collins – to a Grand Final 

victory over Neil Harvey’s 

Northern Districts side at 

the SCG. 

A natural leader and 

accomplished batsman, 

Stimson played four 

seasons with the Cumberland 

club from 1948 

before joining Balmain in 

1953. 

He captained the Tigers 

for eight of his 15 years in 

the top grade from 1962- 

63 until 1969-70 before 

leading the third grade 

X1 for nine seasons from 

1971-72. 

Keith was a member 

of the Balmain Club’s 

management committee 

from 1958 until 1979 and 

retired as a player at the 

end of 1980. 

He was later bestowed

SYDNEY Tigers Cricket Club (formerly Balmain) 

are mourning the deaths of two of its 

greatest leaders in Les Morgan and Keith Stimson 

(pictured). 

with life membership of 

the club for sterling service. 

Stimson is ranked 

fourth on the Tigers’ all 

time run scoring list with 

9802 career runs. 

He posted 4673 runs in 

first grade including two 

centuries as well as 1512 

runs in second grade and 

3675 runs in third grade. 

A versatile sportsman 

in his heyday, Keith also 

excelled in golf, tennis 

and soccer. 

He was a former six 

marker at Tuggerah 

Lakes Golf Club where 

he competed up until the 

age of 90; played A Grade 

tennis at Fairfield and 

second grade soccer as 

a defender with the once 

mighty Granville Soccer 

Club during the 1940s. 

The former long time 

Balmain resident later 

moved to Shelly Beach 

on the central coast with 

wife Gwen in retirement. 

Keith’s funeral will be 

held today (Wednesday) 

at the Palmdale Cemetery.

‘quickish’ off spinner in

Football test series 

victory over New Zealand 

in Rotorua while 

18 year old Ellis of 

West Ryde is gearing 

up for tough challenges

and South Africa on 

the netball court during 

October. 

Both will receive their 

$300 monthly awards 

this Friday night 

at Ryde Eastwood 

Leagues Club at 6pm. 

TAYLA CLIFFORD 

has stamped her mark 

in the national Open 

Women’s touch football 

team since making 

her international debut 

in 2016. 

A skilful ‘middle’ player, 

the elusive Ryde 

Eastwood and Manly 

junior has produced 

brilliant performances 

against New Zealand 

at elite level these past 

few seasons to con- 

solidate her spot in the 

Australian side. 

Talented Tayla was

the Aussies wrapped 

up the 2018 series 2-0 

in the ‘big wet’ with an 

8-5 victory at Rotorua 

International Stadium. 

Clifford teamed up 

with Eastwood’s Samantha

proved a handful for 

the Kiwis with her vision, 

sharp footwork 

and clever passing as 

the Aussies underlined 

their supremacy in the 

difficult conditions. 

Australia blitzed New 

Zealand 9-5 in the first 

test before the third 

match was abandoned 

due to the heavy conditions. 

Tayla hails from good 

touch football stock. 

Her father Jamie Clifford 

is a seasoned 

veteran while her uncle 

Barry Gibson, an 

Australian mens representative, 

has coached 

Ryde Eastwood rep 

teams to several State 

championship titles. 

Tayla began her career 

with Ryde Eastwood 

Juniors at the 

age of nine, representing 

NSW Primary 

Schools before linking 

with Manly and featuring 

in five Junior State 

Cup triumphs. 

By the age of 16 she 

was in the NSW Combined 

High Schools 

team and a regular in 

Manly’s Open Women’s 

outfit. 

Strong performances 

in domestic competition 

earned Tayla selection 

in the NSW 

U/20, Australian U/18 

and U/20 teams before 

forcing her way into 

the Open squad. 

When the inaugural 

NRL touch football 

competition was 

launched earlier this 

year, Tayla was named 

in the Parramatta line 

up and figured prominently 

in a 4-3 victory 

over the Tigers and 4-3 

loss to the Knights. 

During the winter 

months, Tayla has 

shown her versatility 

by playing centre for 

Ryde Eastwood Open 

Women’s rugby league 

team in the Combined 

Sydney premiership. 

The try-scoring sensation 

has used her 

speed and ball skills to 

good effect, combining 

with sister Brittney 

in a slick back division 

that has kept the 

Hawks in finals contention. 

Brittney, a talented 

touch football link with 

Manly, has made an 

impact for the Hawks 

as a fleet-footed winger.

a faultless leadership 

display matched only 

by another favourite 

returned son Benji 

Marshall as brilliant 

as ever even if a little 

more reserved and 

measured.
