Dexter Peacock, 1966 William Pearce, 1967 Patrick William Pearlman, 1988 Alice Drysdale Sheffield was a gifted student, a lawyer, and a generous patron of UT Law. Alice Jane Drysdale Sheffield was born on December 8, 1896, in Palestine, Texas. She moved to Houston as a teenager and graduated from old Central High School. Sheffield entered the University of Texas in 1914. According to a newspaper article appearing in the Austin American she was a “Bluebonnet Belle” and “one of the few girls in the history of the university who have had the stamina to stay in the law department for three years.” While maintaining a fine academic record, she actively participated in athletics and student government. She lettered in basketball and was elected vice president of both her junior and her senior law school classes. She was also an active member of the Phi Mu sorority. Sheffield graduated from UT Law with a bachelor of laws degree in 1918, only the third woman to achieve the honor. She was admitted to the State Bar of Texas the same year. Pichinson, 1964 she advanced to associate general counsel. She was the first UT Law alumna to actively practice law. Throughout her life she participated in University activities. She was a lifetime member of the Chancellor’s Council and a member of the President’s Associates. She donated more than $500,000 to benefit The University of Texas System during her lifetime and was responsible for matching gifts to the Law School Foundation from Gulf Oil and the Exxon Corporation. She also gave substantial gifts to fund Law School professorships. In addition, Sheffield made gifts of valuable antiques, paintings, silver, and porcelain to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. When Alice Jane Drysdale Sheffield died at the age of 98 on December 10, 1984, she bequeathed $3.5 million to UT Law to establish multiple teaching endowments. These included the Alice Jane Drysdale Sheffield Regents Chair, the Earl E. Sheffield Centennial Regents Chair, the Minerva House Drysdale Regents Chair, the Fannie Coplin Regents Chair, the Anne Green Centennial Professorship, and the Alice McKean Young Regents Chair in Law, as well as funded multiple professorships.
