Local Artists Win Awards in Art
Competition
Premier Image Gallery, Ashland,
is holding its 29th celebration
art exhibit and competition,
featuring the combined talents of
20 local area artists submitting
37 artworks. In this show, oils,
watercolors, acrylics, photography
and pastels were entered in
various classes for awards.
The Art Exhibit and Competition
is on display now through
August 18, 2018. The art will
be on display at Premier Image
Gallery, Ashland, daily, 9 a.m. –
3 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.,
and admission is free to the public.
Awards and ribbons were presented
at an open house held to
honor the artists. First place in
oils and acrylics went to oil “Ominous
Clouds over London,” by
Framingham artist Eugene De-
Lauro. Second place went to
acrylic “Protection,” by Stephanie
Dougherty of Framingham.
In the watercolor class, first
place was awarded to Lisa Bailey,

Backpack Drive to
Benefit Local Kids
Helped by DCF
Holliston resident Deborah Sweet, a foster parent ambassador
for the Framingham office of the Department of Children and
Families (DCF), is embarking on her fifth year of collecting backpacks
and school supplies for children in foster care and in families
that are receiving DCF assistance in the 23 towns represented by
the Framingham office, including Holliston.
Since she began five years ago, she’s collected 200-300 each
year, and every single one is given to a child.
The drive helps parents who are receiving DCF services, she
says, because “If a parent is having trouble deciding between a
meal and school supplies, they’ll choose a meal. And it also goes to
foster children who have been removed.
“Oftentimes a backpack is what makes a child feel like they fit in
at school, like they deserve the education that they’re getting and
can be a lifeline for them if they are being transitioned form home
to home.” Sweet adds that the backpack “may be what (foster children)
put all their stuff in instead of a garbage bag when they’re
moving from home to home. If we can make a dent in that, it’s
wonderful,” she says.
Sweet has partnered with Fiske’s General Store, which will be a
drop-off location for the backpacks and school supplies.
