Getting by with a Little Help
from Friends
Eagle Project Sprouts Community Collaboration
By J.D. O’Gara
What started out as an Eagle
Scout project blossomed into a
community effort this summer,
adding some life and color to
Holliston Town Hall’s central
burying ground. Lucas Pocher,
inquiring about the needs of
the town, contacted Selectman
Mark Ahronian, asking for
suggestions for a project to organize.
With a stroke of serendipity,
the project grew into an
impressive effort, ending with a
hydrangea garden.
After Lucas reached out to
Ahronian, Bobby Blair notified
Ahronian that the American
Legion Downtown Marigold
Project had received a $1,000
donation from a resident that
the group wanted to use to
plant blue hydrangeas.
Installs New Officers
By J.D. O’Gara
The Holliston V.F.W. Leonard
D. Chesmore Post 8507 held its
2018 Installation of Officers on
Thursday, June 28, 2018.
The evening was opened with
comments from outgoing Post
Commander Vincent Trunfio,
who thanked members of the
Post for their support of his leadership
and led the Pledge of Allegiance
to the Flag.
Next, Keith Jackson, District
15 State Commander applauded
Trunfio’s leadership as well as the
Holliston Post. “You guys know
what right looks like,” he told the
group, that among 167 posts he
oversees, he has no worries about
Holliston. “You guys are an awesome
team, do a great job” in
fundraising and donating over
$10,000 a year for various veterans’
charities and for giving back
to the community for such causes
as Thanks to Yanks, Homes for
Troops, student scholarships,
sponsorship of Eagle Scout projects,
support of veterans waiting
for claims to be processed, donations
of Bibles for families of
veterans who have passed on and
even supporting members by providing
the V.F.W. uniform.
Incoming Commander David
DeGanne said, “I can’t express
how humbled I am to be elected.
This is the 70th anniversary year,
and the fact that this post is still
here and is as strong as it is is
entirely due to the efforts of the
men here. I’m humbled also by
the idea that they think that I
could do this.” DeGanne, who
enlisted in the military at 35 after
9/11 said that although bringing
in new members will be a challenge,
as less than 1% of the U.S.
population are serving in foreign
wars, he hopes his experience will
serve him well in understanding
what younger veterans are going
through. He added that he believes
that although younger veterans
are “really not interested in
and a few more hydrangeas. To
cap it off, the Holliston Highway
Frank Chamberlain, who works
“It was all about collaboration,”
it was a great project. No one
The area, says Ahronian,
“shows respect for our central
burying ground, and it makes
the town look welcoming and
beautiful.”
Ahronian, who owns Ahronian
Landscape, acted as an advisor
on the project. “This is the
3rd or 4th time I’ve been an advisor
for an Eagle Scout project,”
he says. “They really do a lot
for the community. They show
up with 15-20 scouts and get a
lot of work done. They’ve done
a lot of things all over town, including
the rail trail, helping out
building raised vegetable garden
beds at the senior center ad at
the police station working on the
grounds there.” In this case, Ahronian
helped with equipment by
demonstrating to the boys how
to properly plant the perennial
plant, explaining mudholing and
how to massage the roots so they
don’t get rootbound.”
Lucas explains that the Eagle
Scout project is actually just
part of a pretty large process
in attaining the rank. Since he
joined Cub Scouts at age 6 in
Troop 73, Lucas has worked his
way through a number of merit
badges, camping trips and leadership
positions up to this point.
“Not everything you do in
scouts is recreation. I’ve been actively
working toward my Eagle
for six years. Now that I’ve completed
the project, I’m going to
have to finish my writeup for it
and send it to council.” If he attains
Eagle Scout, Pocher will be
among only 4% of Boy Scouts
who do so. A Scout must earn
21 merit badges, demonstrate
that he has lived by the principles
“I’ve always been on the
path,” says Pocher. “Some of
my best friends I’ve met in scouting.
It’s a worthwhile experience
to go to meetings and trips and
rewarding to get badges to advance,
and it was just the natural
progression.” Lucas has been on
a number of trips with the group,
including a trip to St. Croix in
the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2016.
Lucas’ father, Joe, was a family
mentor to Lucas in the project.
about a month before the discussions.
The film selection for Movie
Monday on Monday, Aug 13 at
12:30 p.m. is The Post starring
Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. It
relates the true story of Washington
Post owner Katherine Graham
and editor Ben Bradlee and
their exposure of government
secrets in 1971. The film is rated
PG-13 and runs for 116 minutes.
Popcorn and beverages are
A telescope can now be borrowed
from the library to watch
the night sky at home. It is a gift
of the Aldrich Astronomical Society,
Inc. and can be borrowed
free of charge with a valid library
card for 2 weeks. Instructions
and guide to the sky are included.
Ahronian landscaping
foreman Ryan Facendola
helps the scouts with a
sod cutting machine.
“My father was great. He was
a huge help. I had to do the planning,
and he was always great for
advice. He worked in landscaping
in the past. He and Mr. Ahronian,
of course, was a huge help,
and he helped me greatly on the
actual work date.”
The first work day, Lucas,
who’ll be a senior in high school
this coming fall, organized a team
of about eight scouts and leaders
from Troop 73 on two different
days to get the work done. “That
was really more than enough for
the type of work we were doing,”
he says. Although the work took
longer than the boys expected,
Lucas was satisfied with the way
the project turned out.
“We planted (the hydrangeas)
at the start of a huge heat wave
– it took longer than expected.
It was like 95 degrees working
out and the sun was brutal. The
plants took some damage, but it
already looks better than it did,”
says Pocher, who, with his group
of scout volunteers will have to
keep the plants watered all summer.
“I think it came together
nicely.”
The telescope can be reserved
in advance and weighs only 14
pounds. It is powerful enough
to view the Rings of Saturn, the
Galilean moons and nearby star
clusters.
The library is looking for
someone who is fluent in French
to volunteer to lead a conversation
group at the library. The
group will allow patrons to build
their knowledge of the language
by speaking to others in French.
Backpack Drive to
Benefit Local Kids
Helped by DCF
Holliston resident Deborah Sweet, a foster parent ambassador
for the Framingham office of the Department of Children and
Families (DCF), is embarking on her fifth year of collecting backpacks
and school supplies for children in foster care and in families
that are receiving DCF assistance in the 23 towns represented by
the Framingham office, including Holliston.
Since she began five years ago, she’s collected 200-300 each
year, and every single one is given to a child.
The drive helps parents who are receiving DCF services, she
says, because “If a parent is having trouble deciding between a
meal and school supplies, they’ll choose a meal. And it also goes to
foster children who have been removed.
“Oftentimes a backpack is what makes a child feel like they fit in
at school, like they deserve the education that they’re getting and
can be a lifeline for them if they are being transitioned form home
to home.” Sweet adds that the backpack “may be what (foster children)
put all their stuff in instead of a garbage bag when they’re
moving from home to home. If we can make a dent in that, it’s
wonderful,” she says.
Sweet has partnered with Fiske’s General Store, which will be a
drop-off location for the backpacks and school supplies.
Keeping Your Cat Healthy
By Dr. Cristina Valas
Whether your cat has short
or long fur, they will benefit
greatly from regular grooming.
This helps remove the dead hair
from their coat so they don’t digest
it while self-grooming. This
will also give you the chance to
notice any changes or irregularities
in your cat’s body such
as lumps, bumps or sore spots.
Cats have their own unique
physiology, diseases and reactions
to drugs and treatments.
They also have their own set of
behaviors that can make noticing
illness very difficult. Cats
The Family Pet Hospital is
are very good at showing that
they’re not sick, and tend not
to show obvious signs like other
animals do. They often become
quiet and stoic, and unless you
notice a change in their normal
behavior, you may not even
notice that there’s something
wrong. For this reason, it’s very
important to bring your cat to
see the veterinarian on a regular
basis.
Annual visits give the veterinarian
a chance to catch any
potential feline diseases in their
early stages, administer vaccines,
and keep an eye on their
oral health. The vet can also tell
you if your cat is at a healthy
weight! Just like in human
health: good nutrition, keeping
a healthy weight and exercising
are important for cats. Keeping
them free of parasites such
as fleas, worms and ticks is also
important, as is appropriate
vaccination, which should be
discussed at length with your
veterinarian. It is best to find
a hospital that is certified cat
friendly through the American
Association of Feline Practitioners.
The Cat Friendly Practice
program is designed to elevate
care for cats by reducing the
stress for the cat, caregiver and
veterinary team. Cat-friendly
practices understand the unique
needs and behaviors of cats and
have a feline-friendly environment
in order to make veterinary
visits more cat-friendly.
Cats usually prove to be difficult
to get in the carrier to
bring to the vet, but don’t let
that deter you from making it
your appointments! Keep the
carrier out and feed the cat inside
the carrier prior to the appointment.
Make sure your cat
is transported in an appropriate
carrier that is designed specifically
for pets. Allowing your cat
to roam freely in the car can
distract you from driving safely,
which can lead to accidents that
may harm both you and your
cat. If you have any questions,
Letter to the Editor:
Advocates Respond to House’s Failed
Leadership on Climate
7/12/18
Today, climate and environmental
advocates were angered
by the Massachusetts House of
Representatives’ decision to pass
a paltry increase to the renewable
portfolio standard, rejecting
more progressive options.
The Mass Power Forward coalition,
comprised of more than
150 member groups supporting
climate and environmental justice
policies, denounced the bill,
H.4738, as an utter abdication of
progressive leadership on renewable
energy.
“For a state that continually
touts its progressive leadership,
this is embarrassing and
our members are angry,” said
Andrew Gordon of 350 Massachusetts.
“This is more than just
a missed opportunity, this was a
choice not to lead. Considering
the federal government’s stance
on climate, such a choice is unconscionable.
”
Amendments designed to
improve the Renewable Portfolio
Standard, protect ratepayers
from the pipeline tax, and codify
environmental justice languageoffered
by Reps Khan, Kulik,
and Vincent-enjoyed broad support
across House membership,
but were rejected by leadership.
In an attempt to appease progressives,
the House adopted
amendment language instructing
DOER to study the impact
of additional offshore wind procurement,
relinquishing further
action to an executive administration
with a strong preference
for fracked gas and hydro power.
“As a climate justice advocate,
I know that time is of the essence.
Our communities can’t wait until
next session. Heat waves, floods
and storms are happening now,”
said Claire Miller of Toxics Action
Center. “As a constituent
of Rep. Sanchez, I’m also just
shocked. Renewable energy and
environmental justice should be a
no-brainer.”
Earlier this summer, the utility
companies, regular campaign
contributors to members of
House leadership, argued that
we don’t need to increase the renewable
portfolio standard, even
as Massachusetts falls behind its
neighboring states.
“It’s disappointing that environmental
justice and solar access
for all have seen little to no
progress in a decade,” said Vick
Mohanka of Clean Water Action.
“Now more than ever we
need to make sure that our laws
prioritize public health and equity.”
“From tonight’s actions we see
that the Mass. House is prepared
to offer tepid clean energy legislation,”
said Emily Norton, Massachusetts
Director for the Sierra
Club. “But the science calls for
bold and aggressive action, if we
are to avoid the worst predictions
for climate change, especially in
our own region. We will only be
ramping up the pressure now.”
“It is baffling and, frankly,
untenable that the leadership
of the Massachusetts House appear
incapable of adequately
adjusting to our rapidly changing
circumstances being brought
about by climate change,” said
Rosemary Wessel of No Fracked
Gas in Mass. “All across the state,
we are being impacted by climate
change, whether sea level rise in
the east or heat, drought, severe
storms, tornadoes and species
shift statewide. We need to take
bold action now, and once again,
the House leadership has fallen
short, even when House members
stood up to co-sponsor positive
amendments.”

“Americana”- A Musical Revue
Enter Stage Left Theater presents
Americana, a musical revue
that explores our American ideals
through a distinctly homegrown
art form — musical theatre.
What does it mean to be
American? What are the values
we share and the principles we
aspire to?
Directed by Mark DiCampo
and featuring songs from Hamilton,
Ragtime, Assassins, Hair, Oklahoma,
and many others, Americana
is an entertaining yet thoughtful
look at our national identity and
how it will be defined by the next
generation.
On the evening of Thursday,
Beatty with a reception at the
Holliston Historical Society. Holliston
is the text of her nomination
for community champion:
We are excited to recognize a
true leader who has demonstrated
a vision for Holliston, exemplified
selfless commitment and tireless
devotion to the community. Holliston
Shore. Kathy brings a sunny
disposition, warm welcome, and
endless enthusiasm to everything
she does. In the 25+ years since
coming to Holliston, Kathy’s
been a volunteer in numerous
organizations and more often,
chair or co-chair. And she’s
found time to accomplish everything
while fulfilling her calling
as a full-time charge nurse.
Her most recent community
success was as Chair of the 2017
America In Bloom Symposium.
She rallied a crew to create four
days of amazing activities for
visitors to enjoy. She crafted a
weekend that immersed them in
Holliston and greater Boston in
unique fashion. Kathy was determined
to make sure that the
Holliston in Bloom’s past Community Champions stand to recognize Kathy Shore as Holliston in Bloom’s
2018 Community Champion.
local tour of Holliston made our
guests feel welcome and allowed
them to get a real sense of our
community.
One of her very early Holliston
organizations was the Newcomers
Club. She spent several
years in various board roles fostering
community spirit and organizing
events to raise funds for
local schools, organizations, and
departments, ultimately becoming
its President.
She has served as a passionate
Deacon of her church and continues
to volunteer in many capacities
fulfilling her own mission
to helping anyone who needs it.
Kathy has spent over 20 years
volunteering in Celebrate Holliston,
our annual event that is
attended by thousands, including
multiple years as co-chair.
With her boundless energy and
creativity, she kept a focus on the
traditions while she encouraged
implementation of fresh ideas.
ServSafe certified since 2009,
she runs the kitchen for numerous
charity events around town.
One of her joys is continuing to
run the in Celebrate Holliston
Food Tent where she has a loyal
following of 25+ volunteers.
Kathy has co-chaired HIB
for the past five years. But she is
also the first one to get her hands
dirty on any clean-up or planting
day. She can cajole the most
reluctant to give something a try
and lend a hand. Local officials
smile when they see her coming
even though they know she
comes with a request in hand.
The proof of her success is
that people will rally to Kathy’
In 2015, Kathy received Holliston’s
Citizen of the Year honors
for her many years of helping
to make Holliston a better place.
Kathy is, of course, the driving
Bob and Laura’s recently adopted
son Salim, are the loves of
Lorenzen Selected to Coach Holliston’s
Girls’ Varsity Hoop Squad
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Kurt Lorenzen is Holliston
High’s new girls’ basketball coach
and to say that the 57-year-old
Illinois native is well-qualified
to handle the position would be
a monumental understatement,
because he’s paid his dues at
every conceivable level.
Lorenzen played high school
and college basketball, and he’s
coached at the youth level (in
Holliston) and in AAU programs.
He’s also been around the block
as an interscholastic coach. At
Holliston, he’s been the girls’
freshman and junior varsity
coach, and he also served as a
varsity assistant.
A resident of Holliston for the
last 23 years, he played guard for
three varsity seasons at Crete-
Monee High School in Illinois
and was a league and all-state
selection. He also was his team’s
captain as a junior and senior
and was chosen as the league
MVP. A top-notch shooter, the
6-foot-2 guard scored more than
1,000 points in his career, numbers
that earned him a scholarship
to Division 1 Eastern Illinois
University.
His college career included
four varsity seasons, the last oneand-a-half
spent as a starter for
the Panthers.
“My best game in college was
my last game as a senior,’’ Lorenzen
recalled. “We were playing
our rival — Western Illinois
— and I scored 20 points. But, it
was my free-throw shooting that
helped us win by two points. I
sank four free throws in the last
20 seconds.’’
Lorenzen, who owns a manufacturer’s
representative firm,
began coaching in the Holliston
Youth Basketball Program when
his children started playing. He
coached for eight years, then became
vice president and fulfilled
that role for 12 more years. At
Holliston, he coached the freshman
girls for three years, then
worked for six seasons as a varsity
assistant for head coach Kristen
Hedrick. He later took the jayvee
reins for two-and-a-half years
and, last May, accepted the varsity
position when Dan Keefe
resigned to devote more time to
his job in the Natick Recreation
Department.
“I’m excited about coaching
the varsity,’’ Lorenzen said. “I
feel confident about my ability. I
know the Tri Valley League and
all the teams. When I officially
got the job, it was great to hear
from opposing coaches. They all
were very welcoming.’’
Lorenzen wasted little time
meeting his players, most of
whom he’s coached at the jayvee
level. “My first meeting was
with our three captains,’’ he
said. “Brooke Geoffroy, Melaine
Colman and Eliza Altobelli are
quality captains who’ll lead by
example and by being vocal.
Then, I next met with our returning
players to discuss training
and summer league play. The
theme at both meetings focused
on expectations and goals.’’
Lorenzen’s objectives as varsity
coach are clear and direct.
They involve improvement and
achievement. “We want to get
better as a team, and that means
improving individually,’’ he emphasized.
“We also want to compete
hard in the TVL and aim
for a berth in the tournament.’’
A proponent of fast-break
basketball, Lorenzen would like
to develop a style that “stresses
full speed, lots of running and
pressure defense.’’ If his players
are talented and techniqueoriented,
an up-tempo game is
definitely in the mix.
“We’ll be without four senior
starters from last year,’’ Lorenzen
noted. “We’ve got seven returnees,
so some girls from the jayvees
will have to step up. We’ll have
some size and an inside presence.
If our work ethic is good and we
develop team chemistry, then our
rebounding and defense will be
strengths.’’
When compiling a roster, Lorenzen
has some specific attributes
he looks for in prospective
players. “I prefer players who are
fundamentally sound, athletic
and coachable,’’ he said. “A high
basketball IQ is also desirable
along with a strong work ethic.
And, quickness and speed are
also assets.’’
The Panthers last winter
earned a playoff berth but were
eliminated early, losing to league
Kurt Lorenzen and his daughter, Kylie both have links to Holliston.
Kurt is the new girls’ varsity basketball coach and Kylie, who scored
1,000 points at Holliston, finished her junior year at Southern New
Hampshire University as an all-American.
powerhouse Hopkinton. The
tourney date, however, ended
a two-year absence from postseason
play. To be a playoff
team continually isn’t easy but
if Lorenzen’s forces adhere to
his philosophy, they should enjoy
success.
“Winning will happen if the
girls relay on teamwork, fundamentals,
going full-speed on both
offense and defense and being
eager to improve every day,’’
Lorenzen emphasized. “Basketball
can be a great experience
but players have to be accountable
but also enjoy their athletic
experience. I want them to learn
valuable life lessons that will help
them get ready for their next
step.’’
There are a number of
coaches who helped prepare Lorenzen
for his step-up. He points
to his college coach (Rick Samuels),
Hedrick and Keefe.
“Rick taught me the concepts
of what it takes to be a coach,’’
Lorenzen noted. “He taught his
players how to deal with personalities.
I still use some of his techniques
and terminology today.
When I worked as Kristen’s assistant
and later with Dan, we
learned a lot from each other.
Kristen taught me to be a good
listener. Both she and Dan were
very supportive of my taking the
varsity job.’’
Lorenzen, who hopes to add a
new jayvee coach soon and possibly
a freshman coach, is married,
and he and his wife Barbara have
a son (Christian) and a daughter
(Kylie). His daughter, who became
Holliston’s fourth female
player to scored 1,000 points,
finished her junior year at Southern
New Hampshire University
as a collegiate all-American and
a Northeast-10 all-star. She averaged
17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds
a game.
Like her father, who sharpened
his skills playing for the
Panthers at Eastern Illinois, she
honed her technique playing for
the Panthers at Holliston High.
Now, it’s Kurt Lorenzen’s time to
develop a new corps of Panthers
who just may become playoff
contenders on a regular basis.
Sports
For Bergloff, Hard Work Makes Natural Throwing Talent Pay Off
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Having a father who was not
only a track and field thrower
himself, but a former coach,
Holliston’s Isabella Bergloff continually
heard how much fun
throwing the discus and shot put
was. While her father (David)
found the sport to be enjoyable,
he was not going to push it on his
daughter.
“I had heard how much fun
it was from my father, but he
wanted me to make a decision
on my own. So, when I eventually
got the opportunity in middle
school, I had to check it out,”
Bergloff said. “I honestly don’t
know what it was, but everything
just seemed to click, and I fell in
love with the sport. I’m really not
sure why, but I found it really
fun, especially doing it with my
friends. There was also a satisfying
feeling when I made a good
throw.”
As a seventh grader Bergloff
threw the discus 67’, upped that
to 86’ as an eighth grader and
eventually broke 90 with a throw
of 94’ to qualify for the Junior
Olympics all before entering high
school.
While the Holliston Middle
School allowed the throwing of
the discus in practice, there was
no taking part in the event during
meets, so going into the state
meet, Bergloff had no idea what
to expect.
“I had never thrown the discus
during a meet before and
only had two weeks to practice,”
the then seventh grader said.
“After throwing 67’ (good enough
for third place) I knew that with
some time and practice I could
do much better.”
Following her eighth-grade
season, she threw 94’ to qualify
for the Jr. Olympics, where at the
Regionals she once again found
herself finishing in third place.
“I was happy with my placement,
but not too super excited
with my throw of 83’, especially
after throwing a personal record
of 94’ to qualify. I was a little disappointed.”
Bergloff said.
Coming into the high school
indoor season, there was no discus
throwing, so Bergloff decided
to try shot put since it was then
only throwing event. Despite trying
the event for the first time she
finished third in the Tri-Valley
League as a freshman and once
again knew that she could only
get better with hard work.
“It was my daughter Kelly
(who threw at Holliston and is
now throwing for UMASS Amherst)
who first told me that I
needed to check her out,” Holliston
Throwing Coach Manny
Alves said. “After watching her
a few times, I knew that she was
going to be special with some
hard work. She has a very strong
work ethic, and we just needed
to make her a better, stronger
thrower.”
Holliston Girl’s Head Coach
Jenn Moreau believes Alves’
hit the nail right on the head
when talking about the Panther
thrower.
“It’s in her blood, and as a
freshman, she came in as a hardworking
individual and was very
mature for her age,” Moreau
said. “Bella takes her throwing
seriously and has become our
‘go to person’ if anyone has any
questions.”
During the spring season, she
threw the discus 114’, finished
third in the TVL and went onto
the Sectionals, but didn’t fare all
that well.
“It was my first really big
meet, and my nerves took over,”
she said. “Throwing against juniors
and seniors, who were a
lot older than me, I just went out
and choked. When I look back
on it, it was all about the experience,
not how well I did that first
time.”
Coming into this past season,
her sophomore campaign, Bergloff
was primed to not only take
on the TVL but the other female
throwers in the state.
“This year, she was more focused
with a goal of breaking
the school record of 125’ in the
discus,” the Panther Coach said.
“While she now does own the
school record, she didn’t quite get
the results she was looking for at
the New England’s and Nationals.
Falling short will only drive
her to do better.”
As a sophomore this past year,
Bergloff put together an amazing
indoor and outdoor season, definitely
her best to date. During the
regular indoor season she went
undefeated in the TVL throwing
the shot put and went on to win
the TVL Championships in the
event. Then, in the spring, the
sophomore went undefeated in
the discus and took the majority
(two second place finishes) in
the shot put and finished second
overall in the TVL.
While she didn’t fare all that
well in the Divisionals during
the shotput during the indoor
season, she was able to grab a
second-place finish in the discus
during the outdoor season.
“It was my first indoor divisional
tournament, and I had just
converted from a glide to a spin
so I was looking at a rebuilding
year,” Bergloff said. “My glide
felt choppy to me and just didn’t
feel right – the spin was more
natural and smoother.”
During the Divisionals, Bergloff
threw 122’, 124’ and 126’
breaking the Holliston school
record not only once but twice.
The record then fell yet again at
the All States when the sophomore
threw the discus 128.6’.
“I knew that I could eventually
break the record, since I
had already thrown a personal
record of 114’,” she said. “I felt
that I could improve my throwing
15-20 feet each season, and I
would break it. Throughout the
season I was around 119.4 and
beginning to peak as the season
came to an end, so I thought that
it was very possible.”
Looking at Bergloff, you
would never picture her for a discus
or shotput thrower, but more
of a runner.
“Bella is 5’8”and not as big
and powerful as most throwers.
She works hard and has developed
her discus technique that
clearly stands out among her
Holliston record-breaker Isabella Bergloff showed a lot of promise
throwing discus and shotput as a sophomore. With two more years to
improve, she’s sure to impress.
peers,” her father said. “I have
yet to see a boy or girl in Massachusetts
with comparable technique.
That is easy for a parent
to say, but I do say it objectively.”
With still two years remaining
in her high school career there
is a lot of room for her to grow.
Bergloff would not only like to
place first or second at the All
States as well as do well in the
New Englands and eventually
take her talents to a Division 1
College.
“The future for Bella is limitless
and will be very exciting to
watch. I think over the next two
years, she will continue to work
very hard and has a very good
chance to possible break the
State Meet record of 157’ 4”,”
Alves said. “She is also a very
good shot putter, too.”
Due to her leadership, Bergloff
has been named a captain for
the Panther squad this upcoming
season and with her estimated
growth of 15-20 feet per year, it
is more than likely by the end of
next year’s outdoor season she
should be holding onto the State
Meet record in the discus. If she
does that then, she would have
just been finishing her junior season
and would have one more
left before she left Holliston.
Fresh Perspectives: HCA Students and Teachers
Through August 23, 2018:
Reception: August 10, 6 - 7:30 p.m.
How does a teacher influence a student?
Is a six-year-old more likely than
a sixty-year-old to take on the teacher’s
style? Here’s an exploration of those questions.
Fresh Perspectives: HCA Students and
Teachers is installed in HCA’s Lotvin Family
Gallery in clusters, students’ work radiating
from the sun of the teacher. Let’s see
what we can learn.
Four teachers - Sarah Alexander (painting
and drawing), Richard Denzer (watercolor),
Heather Heverling (sewing), and
Cathy Howe (painting and drawing) in
whose classes kids from 4 to 82 expanded
their creativity, are the hubs of this show.
“These teachers and students represent
the more than two dozen teachers and
400 students who made art at HCA in
the past year,” says HCA co-director Kris
Waldman.
Beau Vienneau is 6. In his Sharpie
and watercolor painting Happy Tree,
hundreds of blue squiggles make a shimmering,
spindly shape outlined by yellow
squiggles. From its branches hang fruit of
concentric circles in many colors.
Cindy Yang, 14, studies the forms and
refractions of cat’s-eye marbles in her watercolor,
The Outsider. They’re piled high.
Light passing through casts soft shadows.
Off by itself is the big, serious-looking
shooter, gravely apart from the crowd.
Jack Miller, 10, shows The Bearded
Dragon. Out of this pastel peers a lizardly
reptile, scuttling in front of dry hills on taloned
feet. Under a striated sky of purples,
greens, blues, and greys, he stilly eyeballs
Annaleigh Crantz, also 10, worked
with Perler beads, tiny plastic circles that,
once arranged, can be ironed into keeping
their places. Annaleigh’s View from a
Distance is a knockout. Her 1740 beads
make a pixel-like portrait of a tousledhaired
gentleman, wide-eyed and smiling
broadly.
