PLANNING FOR A PUPPY?
If you, or
someone you
know, is thinking
about bringing a
four-legged little
bundle of fun
into the family,
then read on as
Sophie's Pet Care® present some of the important
things that need to be considered…
Cute puppies can all too quickly become big,
strapping dogs, so you need to start by asking
yourself whether you and your tribe can cope
with them as they grow up. Are you willing to
integrate a dog into your family for the next
fifteen years, through all the good times and the
bad? You see, your puppy really needs to become
a family member right from the very start. It's
rather like making a commitment to having a
child; and just like a child they can be timeconsuming
and demanding. They'll need love,
attention and plenty of exercise, both mental and
physical.
Keeping a dog costs money too; in addition to
occasional vet bills, there's the cost of food,
insurance and, when you're away or out at work,
the added cost of external care. Puppies can be
perfect little people around the home, or they
can be little devils, chomping happily through
your favourite furnishings. They love leaving mud
and hair everywhere too. The point is, if you love
your house more than your dog, this might not be
a match made in heaven!
If you're renting your home and still think a
puppy is for you, then before you get too excited
about the prospect, you'll need to check whether
your landlord will agree to it. Some don't. Even if
you're a homeowner, you'll still need to make
sure your home and garden are a suitable size.
The latter needs to be secure and escape-proof.
Puppies love to explore and will wiggle through
the tiniest holes to taste that big, exciting, wide
world that lies outside of your garden.
The next thing to consider is whether your house
is a suitable size for the breed you have in mind.
Some little dogs that you would perhaps expect
to be fine in a small house like, for example,
terriers, detest being cooped up, and although
some of the bigger breeds don't mind being
couch potatoes all day, too much inactive
lounging around it doesn't do their health any
good. So choose a breed that fits, not only your
fancy, but also your home environment.
Finally, you need to take a hard, long look at
yourself. Can you honestly say you'd make a
responsible dog owner and look after that cute,
perfect puppy throughout its whole life, come
what may? Will you give it the life it deserves in
return for the wonders of canine companionship
and a unique brand of unconditional love rarely
found elsewhere?
Well, if you can answer 'yes' to most of the
questions posed in this piece, but remain worried
about having to leave your puppy now and again
when you're out or at work, and also can't bear
the thought of dumping them into kennels when
you go on holiday, then that's actually okay,
because Sophie's Pet Care® can solve all that . We
provide specialist, bespoke home visits for your
puppy that will give them exercise and mental
stimulation when you can't be around, and even
arrange wonderful dog holidays in loving, local
homes for your pampered pooch while you jet off
to the sunshine for a
fortnight or whatever.
NOTES FROM THE SOLENT CELLAR
Time for Provence
Wine Merchants often look forward to the
different seasons, with each season a certain
style of wine tends to dominate our sales.
Bordeaux and Burgundy in December, Rioja
around Easter time, Beaujolais for Nouveau in
November - but one of my favourites is Rosé
season, to me this indicates the start of the
Summer!
Our rosé season starts in April when we get to
taste the new vintage of the wines we ship
directly, and if the sun keeps it's hat on it runs
through until the end of September. A
customer tip off early last year introduced us
to the stunning wines of Chateau Maravenne
in Provence who
weren't yet
imported into the
UK. After tasting
the wines and
visiting the Estate
(it’s a tough job
honestly) we are
delighted by the
range we have for
the second year
running from the
small, organic
Estate that is just a stones throw from the
Mediterranean Sea.
When looking at pairing rosé to food you can't
go too wrong - the dry styles from Provence
are very enjoyable as an aperitif, but as
expected is a winner with French Provencial
cooking, Elizabeth David eat your heart out!
Grilled seafood such as squid or mackerel, and
freshly picked Lymington crab are nothing
short of perfect with this style of wine. Also
summer salads and new season lamb with a
fresh salsa verde. It is often the assumption
that red wine goes well with cheese, however
pair a delicate Provence rosé to soft cheeses
such as brie or camembert, or hunt out the
British version Baron Bigod from Suffolk and
see how well they go together!
Mussels with Garlic, Parsley and Chilli
• Steam the mussels in either water or a
splash of wine.
• Open the
mussels up and
discard half of the
shell.
• Mix
breadcrumbs,
garlic, parsley and
fresh/dried chilli
flakes and pour
over some melted
butter.
• Tightly pack
the mussels with
the breadcrumb mix and arrange in an oven
proof dish.
• Pop under a hot grill for 2-3 minutes until
the breadcrumbs are crispy and golden.
To explore our range of rosé wines visit our
website www.thesolentcellar.co.uk or pop into
the shop on St Thomas Street in Lymington
(opposite M&S).
We will be serving up a range of wines from
Chateau Maravenne at Lymington Seafood
Festival 11th and 12th August 11-8pm
Saturday and 11-6pm Sunday. Please see page
23 of this magazine for more details of the
Festival.
A WINNING NIGHT AT THE ROYAL OAK
The transformation of The Royal Oak is evident
before you enter the building, with a beautiful
planting display of hanging baskets and pots in
the garden area. It’s hard to believe it was only
this February that the pub reopened after a
major refurbishment - it feels very established
and inviting.
The calibre and experience of the team shines
through as we were met with a very warm
welcome. It’s no surprise to learn later that a
high proportion have been with Debbie &
Duane, the owners of the Royal Oak, for several
years – showing both loyalty and pride in their
role. The Manager, Darren has a very calm
approach, but at the same time is very clearly in
control with exacting standards. We were in
good hands for our night out!
The menu is a delight – the Head Chef blends
firm favourites with some inventive touches and
additions. It’s also good to see the attention to
detail applied for the vegetarian options. Here,
it’s not just the usual choices you always see on
standard menus. For example, one of the
specials is a vegetable stew with horseradish
dumplings. We are knowledgeably informed all
the food is freshly prepared and the ingredients
sourced locally where possible. Darren has
previously worked on the supply side of the
business and clearly understands from his
background the importance of food provenance.
And, so for our starters – my choice of curried
vegetable samosa with a sweet chilli dip was a
success from the specials selection. The samosas
were nicely bite size, crisp, with the right edge
of spice. My husband’s starter of the peppered
mackerel pate, beetroot & chilli chutney with a
watercress salad & toasted brioche was
beautifully served. The coarse texture of the
pate is a delight and appropriately peppered for
that bit of extra body.
Attention to detail was noticeable throughout.
Service was attentive and very friendly but well
balanced, so not overbearing. We also started
to notice some lovely touches. We ordered a
glass of wine which was served elegantly in a
small chilled carafe. The chardonnay was very
pleasing - fully flavoured, with a buttery texture.
Our main courses were both impressive. My
choice: a wonderful Caribbean curry , of jerk
chicken leg, coconut rice & beans with a mango
salsa. The dish looked beautifully colourful, with
the taste matching the presentation. As a bit of
a test my husband ordered the 14oz T bone
steak.
I’ve
known
him
many a
time to
send his
dish
back, but this one was spot on – perfectly
medium rare & accompanied with fresh
seasonal vegetables.
fruit – in a word yummy.
Both of us usually pass
on dessert but here
the homemade
selection tempted us.
The strawberry
cheesecake was
creamy but light and
evidently full of fresh
The food at the Royal Oak is clearly not your
usual pub food – this is quality restaurant
standard in a friendly and relaxed setting. And
all very reasonably priced. In summary a winner.
This was reinforced at the end of the night with
a charity raffle in aid of Oakhaven Hospice and
Wave 105 cash for Kids. Such was the generosity
of the donations, most tables won at least one
prize, us included!
EXERCISE IS MEDICINE
It’s all about understanding our bodies, what
can go wrong and how we can help
ourselves. We will all suffer from pain during
our lifetime, from a mild headache to a
severe pain related to trauma, or a heart
attack for example. A large proportion of our
population live with chronic health
conditions which affect their quality of life
and behaviour. Looking after our health is big
in the media and we are bombarded daily
with information to help us make choices in
keeping healthy.
Physiotherapy is a science based practice
that treats patients holistically through
education, touch and exercise. Research has
shown that movement turns on tissue repair
and exercise is fundamental to health.
EXERCISE is medicine in whatever form you
wish to enjoy; walking, cycling, horse riding,
golf, tennis, gym, running, yoga, Tai Chi,
swimming, dance and many more activities
that move your body.
Robust research is emerging daily that
highlights how muscle strength plays a role
in arthritis, cardio vascular disease,
respiratory disease, strokes, diabetes, mental
health issues, and incontinence for example.
Sadly the funding of the NHS cannot offer
physiotherapy for all these chronic
conditions and the public have to decide on
their own treatments with the help of the
internet.
Empowerment is about you being in control
of your health. We need our doctors,
dentists, pharmacists, nurses, health care
assistants, osteopaths, chiropractors and
physios to guide us in best management in
light of emerging research.
My message to you all, we are a village of
people from new born babies to the frail and
elderly. Help each other, encourage your
family and friends to move and exercise, and
seek professional advice to guide you along
the right path!
Hordle Village Scarecrow Competition & Trail 2018
2018 marks the 30th Anniversary of
Hordle’s twin-ship with Yerville in
Normandy, France, which coincided with
the Royal Wedding of Harry and Megan.
So, the Twinning Association thought that
the choice of “Princes & Princesses” as this
year’s scarecrow theme would be very apt.
As usual, there are 3 categories:
• Junior (for 5 to 11 year olds)
• Family/Individual
• Business.
Organised by Hordle & District Twinning Association
Entry forms for participants are available
now from Hordle Pharmacy, Budgens
(Hordle Garage), and Everything Pets, and
should be returned no later than 1 August,
in order for the trail to be mapped and
official numbers given out for each. Your
scarecrow should be proudly displayed at
the front of your house no later than
August 5th in order for people to judge it
alongside the other scarecrows on the
trail, during the rest of August.
We will produce a photographic display of
all scarecrows for the Hordle Village Fair
on Saturday 1st September, for people to
enjoy and judge, before announcing the
top 3 in each category at our prize-giving
towards the end of the Fair.
The appearance of scarecrows across the
village, is a wonderful sight that brings a
smile to your face, whilst following the
trail by foot or bicycle is great fun for
adults and children alike. If you haven’t
tried to make a scarecrow before - go on,
give it a go!
Here’s last year’s Family/Individual winner,
Florence Nightingale, very much one of
our heroines.
WILDLIFE MATTERS ……... to all of us
Welcome to the second Wildlife Matters
pages. In this issue we shall concentrate on
telling you about the conservation
management of Pennington Common.
In June 2011, the Lymington & Pennington
Town Council commenced a ten-year
Stewardship Scheme in conjunction with
Natural England. The Council worked closely
with the New Forest National Park Authority’s -
Land Advice Service, who provided free expert
guidance in making their application.
The Management objectives for Upper
Pennington Common are:
• To restore an open common landscape
characterised by large glades of acid
grassland and heath with small gorse brakes
and scattered gorse bushes and trees
• To reduce the cover of gorse in order to
restore further areas of open species-rich
grassland and purple moor grass-dominated
heath
• To protect historical earth banks
• To implement a rotational gorse management
plan to encourage bushy regrowth with more
open scrub ‘edge’ habitat favoured by birds
such as Dartford Warbler, Nightingale,
Stonechat, Tree Pipit and Whitethroat and to
provide a constant resource of suitably aged
bushes for nesting birds and invertebrates,
and
• Create a range of suitable conditions
including wood edge, light scrub cover,
scattered trees, short grazed turf and areas of
bare ground to favour a diversity of
heathland birds, including ground nesting
birds such as Nightjar and Woodlark,
invertebrates and reptiles.
Chickweed, with locally uncommon Broadleaved
Cotton Grass, Pale Butterwort, Burnet
Rose, Lesser Bladderwort, Dodder and Matgrass,
together with Nationally Rare Reddish
Buff moth.
Target Species:
Nightjar: A New Forest speciality and a bird
that could be encouraged to the Pennington
Common. Listen out next May & June for its
‘churring’ night-time call.
Pale-heath Violet: Recorded within heath at
Upper Pennington Common
Soft-leaved Sedge: Also recorded on the
Common.
Existing special species on Upper Pennington
Common:
Nationally Scarce Soft-leaved Sedge, Pale
Heath Violet, Wild Chamomile and Upright
Management Methods:
Techniques to encourage suitable habitat for
nesting birds and invertebrates: Young birch
and willow is present amongst a number of
more mature gorse stands. This is removed in
conjunction with the rotational gorse
management. Gorse is managed on a rotational
basis to create diverse age structure.
Other management includes; the restoration
of species-rich semi-natural grassland,
woodland and lowland heath, maintenance of
wood pasture, parkland, ponds of high wildlife
value and the control of invasive plant species.
Indicators of Success: Cover of shrubs such as
Holly, Hazel, Hawthorn and Blackthorn should
be between 10% and 50%. By year 10,
undesirable species such as Holm Oak,
Sycamore, Rhododendron, Laurel and Japanese
Knotweed should be rare (less than 5% cover).
In all years, populations of nationally scarce
Upright Chickweed and Chamomile has to be
maintained. In return for completing these
works, the Council are able to claim up to
£5,953 pa from the EU & Natural England pot
for the duration of the ten-year plan. A further
£14,749 for capital works is also available.
Lousewort: Flowers from April to September
on damp acid grassland
NOTICE BOARD : LOCAL GROUPS , CHARITIES
Hordle & District Twinning Association
Do you remember your first holiday abroad?
Perhaps taking the ferry to France, and on
arrival finding things slightly different to what
you were used to at home, but quite wonderful
to explore - a boulangerie with fresh croissants,
an epicerie with strange smelling cheeses, or
better still chancing upon market day with a
huge range of colourful local produce and
products that you couldn’t buy back home.
Well, the Hordle & District Twinning Association
can offer you all this and more!
On the Sunday, everyone spends time with their
hosts - perhaps visiting friends or relatives for
lunch, or a place of interest, whilst some of us
organise a cycle ride in the beautiful countryside
surrounding Yerville. The weekend is topped off
with a get-together in the local Salle du Maire,
entailing a communal meal and entertainment,
and perhaps a few short speeches. We leave on
the Monday morning after meeting up again for
a group breakfast of coffee, hot chocolate,
crusty baguette and croissants. It is great fun!
The Association began 30 years ago with a few
enthusiastic members and a lot of hard work to
twin with the village of Yerville in Normandy.
Since then, every alternate year, a group of 40
or so from Hordle travel to France to stay with a
host family in Yerville for a long weekend, Friday
to Monday. We stay in their homes, being
treated to lovely French cuisine and wine of
course, and appreciating the French way of life.
Our twin association in Yerville, organise a grand
day out on the Saturday - visits have included a
local Chateau with beautiful gardens, a
fromagerie producing specialist Neufchatel
cheeses shaped like hearts, punting on canals in
Amiens and visiting the Benedictine Liquor
factory and museum in Fecamp. This 30th
Anniversary year we were treated to a velo-rail
ride to the beautiful coastal town of Etretat,
where, after lunch at a pretty restaurant, we
went on a guided tour of the town and stunning
cliffs.
On odd years (2017, 2019), our Yervillais friends
come to us, when we look forward to showing
them the beauty of the New Forest, its coast
and attractions, as well as English cooking and
proper beer.
The “raison d’être” of the Association is to
introduce our cultures through exchanging real
life experiences, in the heart of a family home,
thus gaining a better understanding of how each
other lives. We share stories of childhood and
everyday life and it soon becomes obvious that
we’re not that different at all. But above all we
have a great deal of enjoyment together, and
build up long-lasting friendships with our
‘twins’.
The Association does not lie dormant between
these annual weekends. We organise events
throughout the year to socialise and to raise
funds for hosting our guests. We organise the
annual scarecrow competition which runs up to
the village fête, as well as Quiz Nights, Safari
Suppers, Bastille Day BBQ, wine-tasting and
group meals out.
Above all, the Association is all about
camaraderie! We are always happy to welcome
new members of all ages. Please contact Bob
Norley on 07436000614 if you are interested in
joining.
In the Garden
Gardening Tips
with Alan Edmondson of
Bowercot Garden Design
August/September
• Watering is most important. Even if it does rain, check any containers and baskets in
sheltered positions.
• Collect black spot infected leaves from beneath roses on a regular basis. Do not compost
them.
• Trim established hedges such as box, holly, beech and yew. These are all only given an
annual cut.
• Clear duckweed from the surface of pools.
• Cut gladioli as soon as the lower flowers open but leave at least four leaves on the plant in
order to feed the developing corm.
• Pick sweet corn cobs as soon as the seeds exude ‘milk’, when pressed with your finger nail.
• Cut out fruited loganberry canes to the base and tie in the new stems.
• If mare’s-tail is a problem, crush the stems before applying glyphosphate weedkiller.
• If you are thinking of building a rockery or raised alpine bed, choose a sunny, well drained
position away from trees.
• Continue to dead head roses – this should ensure they bloom throughout the month.
• Take cuttings of lavender and protect them in a cold frame.
• Pick remaining tomatoes and lay them out to ripen in a warm place, but not in direct
sunlight.
• Prepare containers for planting spring flowering bulbs. Try a bottom layer of tulips, a middle
layer of daffodils and a top layer of crocus.
• Do not forget to feed the fish in your pond. Live food may be becoming scarce and they
need to build up their reserves for the winter.
Local Gardening Tip: Invasive weed around the Danestream
Himalayan Balsam, which is an invasive weed is growing around our area. I
have just pulled up over 300 plants in an area of 10 square metres. The plant
has a very pretty flower as It is from the Impatiens ( Busy Lizzie) family,
however that pretty flower sets seeds which can be fired up to 25 metres away. Thankfully the
roots are very shallow and easy to remove before the plant flowers. It suffocates all other plants
in the area it invades, so see one and pull it up! Any weedkiller containing Glycophosphate
(e.g.Roundup) will kill a plant in a few days. ……….. Clive Gilchrist
NFDC LOCAL PLAN
UPDATE
NFDC currently have out for public consultation
their ‘Local Plan 2016-2036 Part 1: Planning
Strategy’. This is the document that will
determine the most suitable places for larger
‘strategic sites’, each of over 100 dwellings, in
the New Forest district area outside the
National Park. In total, the plan will provide
strategic sites for 10,500 new homes in the
district over 20 years.
new routes through the village to the school
and church and encouraging biodiversity.
Please read the Planning Strategy document
and, if you wish, make your comments on the
Representation Form provided, all
downloadable at
www.newforest.gov.uk/localplan2016
If the plan is approved by the government
inspector at an examination hearing early next
year, Hordle will see around 260 new homes
built in the area. Generally, the plan promotes
smaller 1 and 2 bed homes of different types,
suitable for a variety of ages, from younger
couples starting off in life, to those downsizing
from a larger home. 50% of homes built on
strategic sites will be ‘affordable housing’, and
of that there will be a mixture of affordable
small rented properties, affordable smaller
‘home ownership’ properties and other market
homes of various sizes.
The main sites proposed in Hordle are on
Hordle Lane/Vicarage Road/Sky End Lane (site
SS8) and Everton Road (SS9). Officers and your
NFDC councillors have worked hard (taking into
account residents’ earlier consultation
comments) to determine what we believe are
the most appropriate and least harmful areas
for development in the village. In addition,
officers have developed more detailed designs
as to how these sites might be best developed,
as a future guide for both potential developers
and planning officers. A Supplementary
Planning Document showing this further detail
should be available in the autumn.
I am very aware of the different views that local
people have about the development of these
currently green belt sites. But I believe the plan
will provide attractive new homes in Hordle,
whilst also creating new open recreational
space available for everyone to use, providing
The deadline for comments is August 12 th . You
can also contact me about the plans at any time
