The Howick Girl Guides enjoyed their
year end trip recently. They traveled to the Earl Rowe Provincial
Park in Alliston, where they spent two nights. The girls had a
very fun filled weekend at this beautiful park. They had a canoe
lesson, went fishing, swimming, and played yard games (ladder
golf, bocce ball, badminton, etc.) They made their own Hobo
Pockets for dinner, and were amazed by the willow tree that was
too big for the beavers to take down! I think the biggest hit was
the Sky Flying Lanterns. Twelve girls attended, along with two
student volunteers.
Thank you to Cassandra Ash and Heidi Raynard for helping out.
Also thank you to the four Moms and three Leaders
Fordwich Seniors
Fordwich Seniors euchre was held on Friday night, June 8th, in the
Fordwich Hall. Winners were: High pink card – Bernice Johnston,
tied for second High – Myrna Burnett and Ilene Tomlin. High white
card – Mary Mighton, tied for second High – Lois Kerr and Russel
Hartley. Consolations were Irene Kaufman and Allan Wylie. The
next euchre will be Friday, July 13th, 7:30 p.m., Fordwich Hall. Everyone
welcome, lunch provided.
Fordwich Seniors Young at Heart Club met at the Fordwich
united Church parking area on Wednesday, June 6th, at 11:30
a.m. They pooled cars to go to Kings Hotel, Palmerston, for 12:00
noon, where forth five members and visitors enjoyed a delicious
smorgasbord dinner. At 2:00 p.m., we gathered at Prestige Taxidermy,
also in Palmerston, where we were welcomed by Taxidermist
and Owner, John Wesselink. John took us on a tour, which
was very interesting, and he explained how the animals are brought
to him, and from the the work is started and until it is completed.
The animal is either mounted to hang on the wall, or left standing
or a sitting position. This takes many hours. Several questions
were asked and John very ably answered them. He was thanked
on behalf of the group by Carol DonaldsonJohn declined a gift for
speaking to the group, so a donation was made to the Palmerston
Food Bank on his behalf.
There will not be a meeting in July, but a card party will be held
on Friday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m., at Fordwich Hall. Everyone welcome.
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN HOWICK
Wroxeter Community Hall
Board receives funds
GODERICH, ONT. -- April 23, 2012 Ben Lobb, Member of Parliament
for Huron-Bruce, today highlighted federal support for the
Wroxeter Community Hall which will expand opportunities for people
with disabilities and improve accessibility.
MP Lobb made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable
Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
“Our Government recognizes the abilities of all Canadians and is
committed to removing barriers to participation for people with disabilities,”
said MP Lobb. “We are proud to work with the Wroxeter
Community Hall Board which is helping Canadians gain greater access
to facilities, programs and services in their communities”.
The Enabling Accessibility Fund supports community-based projects
across the country that improves accessibility and enables all
Canadians, regardless of physical ability, to participate in and contribute
to their communities and the economy.
The Wroxeter Community Hall Board is receiving $42,233 to build
accessible washrooms and install a wheelchair lift at the Wroxeter
Community Hall. Through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, the
Government has supported over 800 projects across the country,
including 188 new projects totaling $6.2 million that were recently
announced.
“On behalf of the Wroxeter Community Hall Board, we would like
to thank the Government of Canada for this support. It will ensure a
future for our Community Hall”, said Cam Edgar, Chair of the Wroxeter
Hall Board.
Restaurant reopening
The Wroxy Restaurant, which was recently closed, re-opened on
Friday, June 1st. Elizabeth MacLean, who moved to Wroxeter a
little over a year ago, is fulfilling a dream that she has fostered
for the past 37 years - to run a restaurant. She says that to her,
working as a cook is a labour of love. She has come to know a
lot of people in the community, and is looking forward to meeting
more residents in the future. The new hours that Elizabeth has
set are on a trial basis for
a month, at which time she
will decide what works best.
Elizabeth managed two restaurants
before coming to
Wroxeter, so she is well experienced
in the trade. Give
A visit to Mike Shannon’s Bevelled Edge Blacksmith Shop at Dres was
the beginning of the May Meeting. Mike demonstrated his craft as he
was working on a coat rack scheduled for auction at the hospital Gala,
which will be held on May 26. The ladies admired many different
items he has made and the new steel he uses . As well, he showed
us the various hammers to shape the steel, which he first heats on a
coal fire.
The members also saw the finished sculpture Mike was commissioned
to make, and which is now located on the Clifford Main Street.
This sculpture took 150 hours to complete. Each lady received a souvenir
key chain Mike had made. Following many questions that Mike
answered, he was thanked and presented with a gift.
Irene Kaufman was the hostess for the remainder of the meeting.
A short business meeting was conducted by the president, Isabella
Hislop. It was decided that Lakelet W.I. would not sponsor an ambassador
for the Howick Agricultural Society competition. Adele Kavelman
read an amusing story for her favourite reading. Refreshments
and conversation concluded the meeting.
Fordwich UCW
Members of the Fordwich u.C.W, along with family members and
friends, attended a live production of the Sound of Music at the Drayton
Festival on Thursday, May 31. This was in lieu of the regular
u.C.W. meeting in June.
Following the performance an excellent buffet salad supper was
served by the Drayton Christian Reformed Church, in their Church
Hall. They also served a variety of desserts, along with tea, coffee
and juice.
Minister’s
Message
Broken in a Good Way
One of the strangest train wrecks in the history of the railway occurred
on September 15th, 1896 near Waco, Texas. Most other train wrecks
were accidents, but this one was planned! Ironically, the name of
the man who organized the event was George Crush! Realizing that
train wrecks always drew large crowds, Crush knew a planned wreck
could bring in a lot of money. He was able to convince some railway
officials to test the idea, and preparations began for the big day. Posters
for the event were splashed across the entire state of Texas. The
only entrance fee would be the price of a train ticket to the crash site.
The cost for a round trip from anywhere in Texas was two dollars.
On the day of the wreck, forty thousand people showed up to watch.
The crowd was restless with excitement as the two engines, both
pulling six cars, lined up nose to nose. Next, both engines backed
up about a mile and the engineers waited for the signal. Crush was
sharply dressed and riding a white horse in front of the crowd. He
held his hat high, and then lowered it to signal the engines to start.
Both engineers set their locomotives at full throttle, and then jumped
off before they got up to speed.
The crowd roared as the sound of the trains grew louder. Clouds of
smoke and steam billowed out from the engines as they reached top
speed. They struck with a terrible crash. The boilers on both engines
exploded on impact. There was nothing left but a tangled mess of
broken pieces.
Have you ever felt like your life was a “tangled mess of broken pieces?”
Are you hurting? Have your dreams been crushed? Have you
lost a loved one or been abandoned by a friend? To brokenhearted
people, the Bible says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he
rescues those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). God cares
about what you’re going through.
Did you know that there is another kind of broken heart? The Bible
says that what God wants from us is “…a broken spirit. A broken and
repentant heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). This
kind of broken heart is not sad—it is humble! This is the attitude God
is looking for in all of us. God says, “Heaven is my throne, and the
earth is my footstool. … My hands have made both heaven and earth
and they are mine … I will bless those who have humble and [broken]
hearts, who tremble at my word” (Isaiah 66:2).
God invites all of us into a relationship with him; a relationship where
we experience His love and grace and find forgiveness and hope.
It is our attitude that is the key to entering into this relationship with
God. If we are proud and self-dependent, we think we don’t need
God and we won’t seek Him. But humility and brokenness unlock
the door to a relationship with God. We live in a culture that prizes
independence, but God is looking for people who are willing to make
a ‘declaration of dependence,’ trusting the God who made them and
who offers to forgive. Are you broken in a good way?
Joke of the Month ..
Senior Driver
Sitting on the side of the road waiting to
catch speedy drivers, an O.P.P. officer
saw a car puttering along at 11 km. per hour. He thinks to
himself, “This driver is as dangerous as a speeder!”
Approaching the car, he notices that there are five elderly ladies
– two in the front seat and three in the back – wide-eyed
and white as ghosts.
The driver, obviously confused, says to him, “Officer, I don’t
understand. I was going the exact speed limit, what seems
to be the problem?”
The officer, trying to contain a chuckle, explains to her that
11 was the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed,
the woman grinned and thanked the officer for
pointing out her error.
“Ma’am, I have to ask, is everyone in the car OK? These
women seem awfully shaken!”
“Oh, they will be alright in a minute, Officer. We just got off
Highway 169!”
Seniors, tell us a story about your school days (how you walked
Why do turtles cross the road?
May and June are nesting times for turtles. Female turtles
often return to their own birth site to lay their eggs, and it is necessary
for them to travel distances to reach this site.
You would think it would be relatively easy to avoid hitting
a slow moving turtle on the road. But accidents can happen! However,
there are those who will deliberately drive over them. I am
sure many of you have observed those drivers who seem to delight
in hitting small animals and reptiles – does it give them a sense of
power – using a huge machine to decimate some small creature?
Recently a female turtle was hit near the bridge in Wroxeter.
A passerby stopped to move it from the road, and observed
the eggs that the turtle was looking for the right location - soft, sandy
soil in a sunny spot, for her offspring to hatch. Once again, accidents
can happen – and I would hate to think that some fool would
deliberately drive over her!
Turtles must be handled carefully. I know of some drivers
that carry shovels in their vehicles at this time of year, when so
many of them can be seen on the roads. It is relatively easy to coax
a turtle onto a shovel, or a similar object, and give them a “lift”. If
there is nothing available to move them, then carefully pick them up
by grasping both sides of the shell, never by the tail. Always take
them in the direction they were heading, as they will only attempt to
cross again. They know where they are going!
Too many of these small species are becoming extinct,
and each and every one of them have a purpose in the ecological
system. We should be trying to preserve them, not destroy them!
(Now snakes and mice are a different matter!)
JULY 2012 EDITION PAGE 13
WOW ! That was life changing
Hola, My name is Adam Schefter. This past February I had one of the
most amazing experiences of my lifetime. (other than getting married
of course) I was fortunate enough to be invited by a friend of mine
to go on a trip to El Salvador to build houses. I travelled there with
eleven other individuals who were mostly based out of the Listowel
Pentecostal church .
When we arrived we actually had the opportunity to tell some
of the families that we
were going to build
them a new house that
week. That ‘s emotional.
We went to work and
built 9 houses. The
houses are of steel
tubing construction,
pre fab walls , with galvanese
sheeting that
is tek screwed to the
walls. The inside dimension
of the house
is 16 feet by 16 feet.
After the house is up
the locals cement the
floors to a very smooth
finish. The houses that
we built are manufactured
in the capital of
El Salvador. Total cost, with cement, is $2,700.00
One of the tasks when we were there was to bag food rations,
which consisted of beans, corn, rice, powdered milk and sugar. One
bag of food would last a family approx. 4 to 5 days. If they had to buy
that bag of food it would cost $15-$18. An average wage is $5 a day.
One of the rewarding parts of the trip, was knowing that we helped
put safer roofs over top of families heads. The other really neat thing
is that we were able to walk in to a local school and play soccer with
the kids. They are more than happy to beat up on the white guys.
After being back on Canadian soil for a while things really started to
sink in about how good we have it. The whole experience has redirected
some of my goals in life. Another time slot is already booked
for next year.
All costs incurred for travel hotels and food I pay for myself. I am
not asking for any money to go on the trip.
Here’s my idea: I would like to come up with enough money from
residents of Howick Township to build one or two houses. The part
I love about this project is that I know exactly what everything costs
and where all the money goes. I don’t like the feeling when you donate
your hard earned money to a cause and you are not sure how
much actually ends up where it is supposed to.
There is a tax receipt available for any money donated. All
cheques will be made to EMCC. (Evangelical Mission Church Canada)
I will forward them on to the correct location.
Please feel free to contact me any time and discuss more about
what we did on the trip or about donating.
TURNING UP THE
VOLUME TO SAY
LOVE IS LOUDER
Local Youth are hired to run Traveling Summer Day Camp at local
united Churches with a message of Welcome and Hope.
Feeling safe and included is paramount for every person....no matter
what age. Children are no exception. Summer camp has been
a place to build relationships and a church is one place many find
community support that lasts through out their lifetime. The Huron-
Perth united Church Traveling Summer Day Camp is focusing this
year on helping kids understand how to strengthen and develop
safe and welcoming community as they focus on concepts like
trust, promise and hospitality. Caring for the environment is also a
key message in this summerʼs program with a strong focus on water.
Both these themes of safe community and water preservation
are woven into the activities for the each day in all sorts of ways.--
---games, science activities, crafts, music and more!
“Environmental concerns are a big part of everyoneʼs focus. It is
nice to be able to highlight this at a young age with the kids who
will come to our camps.”, notes Jenna Beierling, this years, fulltime
Day Camp Coordinator. “When I was a kid, I loved the vBS program
at my home church. I saw my friends, I played games outside
and inside, I sang songs, made fun crafts and I learned about my
faith in a different way than I did at traditional Sunday School.”,
remembers Beierling.
Kathy Douglas, the Huron-Perth Presbytery Youth Minister notes
”not only does this program connect communities to their local rural
churches, it also offers much needed summer employment and
skill development for youth and young adults.” There will be jobs
provided for over 50 youth through this program. This is the third
year the program has run and it has grown from six sites to twelve
host sites. Love is Louder, has the potential to strengthen our local,
rural communities.” This day camp is a daily half day program for
children 4-12 years of age. Registration is advised and participants
are encouraged to contact the church
nearest them to attend.
Love is Louder, Traveling Summer Day Camp, 2012 will run in the
Fordwich United July 23-27. All children are welcome. If you are
13-15 and looking for a one week chance to work/volunteer at our
camps, we pay $50/wk or offer 25 hours of community service. For
more information-call your local united Church or Kathy Douglas,
From the
Editor
Well, here I am in Denmark, enjoying a
visit with relatives. After flying to Amsterdam,
and then to Hamburg, Germany,
where we rented a car, and travelled to a friends home just over the
Danish border, where we stayed for the night. On Saturday, we headed
off to my nieces wedding, but there was an accident on the road,
and we were delayed. We made it in time to see the bride and groom
come out of the Church. We then attended a reception for them at the
harbour in Faaborg.
We are staying at a bed and breakfast near our family. Little Audrey is
gradually adjusting to the 6 hour change in time, and actually went to
bed at 10 p.m. last night. Before that it was 1 a.m. before she wanted
to settle down. Some of you will remember our nephew, Kai Feldskov,
who lived with us several years ago. It has been great to see him, and
his wife, Anne Grethe, again. We celebrated his birthday and their
10th anniversary. Holger and I last visited Denmark for their wedding
10 years ago.
I had to come to Denmark to visit an Ikea store today. I have never
had the opportunity to go to one at home. A very new store here, that
was very interesting to see. And of course, we went to McDonald’s for
lunch, Audrey’s favourite restaurant.
This afternoon we are visiting with a niece, Elsebeth and her husband,
Peter Hansen, who are honey producers. We have had an interesting
tour of the different stages of honey production and Elsebeths shop
where she makes and sells wicker baskets, bird cages, etc.
On Thursday, we will fly to Scotland to visit with friends, and to attend
the Royal Highland Show. Then back to Denmark for more family
visits. before returning to Canada,
Thank you to all who sent their submissions in early, so Sharon will
not have to do everything at the last minute. And thank you, Sharon,
for all your work in getting the July issue out.
Will see you soon, Marion, Mary and Audrey
continued from page 9
We would like to thank all of the volunteer parents and members
of the community for your ongoing support of our school this
year. We couldn’t have such a great school without your efforts,
whether it was working with students to improve their academic
skills, being a member of School Council, helping prepare food
and clean up for our snack program, cooking hotdogs, tending our
gardens, helping with graduation, or assisting with fund raising
events, you really made our school a better place.
As the year draws to a close, we have to sadly say goodbye to
some staff members. We have teachers returning from maternity
leaves, so we will be saying goodbye to Mrs. Stephanie Bloemberg
and Mrs. Julie Haugh, and Mrs. Myca Bateman-Charters.
These teachers have been a tremendous asset to our staff, and
we wish them well in their future placements. To all of the families
who are leaving us, we wish you well, and we look forward to welcoming
many new families to our school community next year. We
want to remind everyone to play safe and have an enjoyable summer.
We look forward to seeing you back at Howick in September!
Howick Bloomers
Garden Club
The Bloomers started their June 11th meeting with a tour of Julia
Stan’s garden in Fordwich. What a delightful surprise to see
what’s growing behind her garden fence! Julia has designed all
sorts of special areas in her secret hideaway: ponds, beaches and
a cabin, all surrounded with unique shrubs and perennials.
The final meeting before summer holidays is on Monday, July 9th
for a tour of the Flowers to Fragrance Lavender Farm on Highway
89. Everyone is invited to join us for a fun evening. Call Linda
Henhoeffer at 335-6235 for car pooling information.
