Loy digging a new feature at
this year’s Tullamore Show
Loy digging will be a new addition to
the already packed programme at
this year’s Tullamore Show and FBD
National Livestock Show on Sunday,
August 12.
A loy is an early Irish spade with a
long heavy handle made of ash, a narrow
steel plate on the face and a single
footrest. The word loy comes from the
Irish word láí, which means spade. It
was used for manual ploughing prior
to and during the Irish Potato Famine
There will be Loy Digging demonstrations
throughout the day from
10:30am until 4.30pm. The demonstrations
will be shown by Tom Egan
and Bernard Casey, both members of
The Loy Association of Ireland.
A plot of ground beside the demonstration
will be set aside as a space
for members of the public to try their
hand at loy digging. Members of the
Loy Association will be present to give
advice and assistance to any beginners
at loy digging and to anyone who never
before has seen a loy.
Eamon Egan, Secretary, Loy Associationof
Ireland commented, “The loy is
uniquely Irish. It’s characteristics are
weed-control and drainage which cannot
be surpassed by the most modern
technology of today. We are fortunate
that the custodians of its use are with
us still. We should be grateful to the
people who saved it for us. God be with
the tool that fed our nation. Long may
its use continue. “Work hand & foot,
work Loy & Hand The Blessed fruit
that grows from the root is the real
gold of Ireland.”
The art of making a ridge or lazy
bed by hand and doing it properly is
most important for the production
of fresh vegetables for the kitchen.
This is a thing that was always done
in the old days.

Teagasc to showcase benefits
of forestry at Tullamore Show
Teagasc Forestry advisers explain
the benefits of growing
trees to landowners almost every
day and yet there are many
landowners who are still not
familiar with the opportunity
forestry can present.
The Forestry and Sustainable
Living Section at the Tullamore
show will be a great
opportunity to find out the
benefits of planting trees;
from the annual income, the
grant which covers the costs;
not to mention the growing
asset, environmental benefits
and many other opportunities
growing woodland can
present.
Organised by Teagasc’s
Forestry Development Department,
the Forestry and
Sustainable Living section
at the show is composed of a
large outdoor trade stand section.
It will showcase all facets
of Ireland’s rapidly developing
farm forestry and renewable
energy sectors.
Investing in forestry is rarely
a choice between farming or
not farming but rather an opportunity
to invest in another
enterprise which contributes
positively to the whole farm
business. The opportunities
provided by a farm forestry
enterprise to enhance family
farm income particularly
through new afforestation,
forestry thinning and wood
energy will be highlighted at
the Tullamore Show.
Many organisations and
companies will be present at
the show this year; ranging
from tree nurseries, forestry
consultants and companies,
state agencies, to firewood
processors and other hi-tech
machines. As the private forest
industry continues to develop,
it contributes more and
more to our rural economy.
The Teagasc Forest Development
Department stand
will be within the Forest and
Sustainable Living Section
(Stand W439). Teagasc Forest
advisers and researchers
will be on hand to assist on
all Forestry inquires. It is a
great opportunity to avail of
free, comprehensive and up to
date information on forestry
and renewable energy as well
as picking up a free forestry
information pack!
from all over the country,
alongside entrants for its other
1,000 plus competitions.
Here is a look at some of the
competitions in the sections at
this year’s event.
DAIRY SECTION
The Dairy section is a key component
in the FBD National Livestock
Show.
There are four breeds catered
for within the Dairy Cattle
section at the FBD National
Livestock Show; Pure Friesian,
Jersey, Dairy Shorthorn, and the
Holstein Friesian breeds.
The highlights in the Dairy
Section this year features four
championships in the Jersey,
Shorthorn and Holstein Friesian
breeds.
Young people will have the
opportunity of competing in six
showmanship classes, which
should cater for all ages and
interests.
The overall prize fund in dairy
exceeds €21,000, with the National
Holstein heifer in milk
and the National Senior Cow in
milk each having a prize fund of
€2,500, together with rosettes
and medallions.
The gold medals are awarded
to the Champions of each breed
and are presented during the
Parade of Champions at the end
of the day.
Exhibitors are sure to find
something to catch their attraction
with these beautiful breeds
on exhibition.
Some of these classes have a
big prize fund of almost €2,500
for the winning animals, such as
the Senior Holstein Cow in Milk.
is a confined section where the
confined classes are confined
to Laois, Offaly and Westmeath
breeders.
