So what is changing with the bins in Renfrewshire?
Firstly, you'll be receiving a new green bin which
will be for plastics, cans and glass.
This will be delivered in advance of the new
collection arrangements along with details of what
should or should not go in each bin.
You will still receive a collection every week of at
least one bin.
Why is this happening?
We've found through research that up to 69% of the
rubbish being placed in the general waste bin could have
been recycled.
The new service aims to encourage people to be better
recyclers and increase the space available in your general
waste bin.
Your four bins will now be:
A GREEN wheelie bin
for plastics, cans and
glass and will be
collected every four
weeks (alternate
fortnightly with the
blue bin).
The GREY general
waste bin will be
collected every three
weeks
We also need to comply with the Scottish Government's ban on untreated
biodegradable waste being sent to landfill by 2021, as well as ensuring we fulfil the
national Household Recycling Charter objectives.
Does this affect everyone?
The new collection service will impact on the 90,000 properties across
Renfrewshire which have a kerbside collection service.
Approximately 30,000 properties, which includes tenements, maisonettes and high
flats, will see no change to their general waste collection but the service will be
tailored to allow these properties access to the new service if they require.
The BLUE bin will now
be for paper and
cardboard only and
will be collected every
four weeks (alternate
fortnightly with the
green bin).
There is no change to
the BROWN food and
garden waste bin, if
you have one, which is
still collected
fortnightly
Don't worry, you will be fully informed of the change to your collection in advance.
Keep an eye on the Council Facebook and Twitter channels too as we'll be posting information there as often as
possible. http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/binchanges2018
Sports & Vision
by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians
Do you wish you could cut a few strokes off your golf
score? Having trouble returning your tennis partner’s
serve? Does your child always seem to be just a few
steps away from the football? Vision, just like speed and
strength, is an important component in how well you play
your sport.
Eye protection should also be considered by all sports
people, especially in certain high-risk sports. Thousands
of children and adults suffer sports-related eye injuries
each year, with squash and paintball accounting for a very
large part of this group. Nearly all of these injuries could
have been prevented if the proper protective eyewear
had been worn. Years ago, there was some resistance
by children to “looking funny” when they wore protective
eyewear but today, sports goggles are an accepted part
of everyday life, similar to the way bike helmets have
become the norm.
Impact resistant materials, initially used for astronaut helmet
visors and space shuttle windshields, are now widely used as
lightweight but durable spectacle lenses, and are particularly
effective for eye protection in sport. Polycarbonate lenses,
for example, are up to 10 times more impact resistant than
standard plastic or glass lenses and they also offer further
protection from UV light.
For outdoor sports, appropriate sunglasses are a must, and
some sport-specific designs may even help you improve your
game. There are a variety of tints available to improve on
contrast in golf, clay pigeon shooting and skiing. Almost
every option is also available with spectacle correction, even
swimming goggles.
Each sport has its own specific risks and visual demands
so just ask your optometrist what would be best for your
favourite sports.
