My mother is an artist and my inspiration. Thanks to her, I don’t think there has ever been a time that I was not covered in paint or found with a pencil in my hand. I wasn’t fortunate enough to be in a school that offered art as a subject but that didn’t stop me from pursuing it after. I have a Degree in Graphic Design from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Even then in my spare time I use to draw portraits for friends and their families. Since completing my studies I applied my design skills to promoting my husband’s nightclub and helping people affiliated with us. I only recently rediscovered my passion for drawing. My preferred medium is watercolour pencils and I use them in a technique called burnishing. I think an artist only reaches their full potential once they find the medium that suits them best. Another great inspiration for my art has been DeviantArt. I can’t stress how important it has been for me to see what other artists are capable of on this very popular art website. Until now I have been honing my skills but I plan to create a business for personalized portraits. It’s never too late to live your dream. 39 KULTÜR NOVEMBER 2011
