So one would think
executing a cover shoot
would be a relatively
simple operation, yes? Well,
not quite. Between the hours
of 9.30am and 5.00pm on a
Thursday in Hennie’s kitchen
and living room, the madness
took place... Make-up covered
the counter tops alongside
the hairspray, clips, camera
equipment and PVC that
littered every available surface.
For hours we styled, curled,
posed, clicked and squealed
until we captured what we had
worked so hard to achieve.
Simple or not, we all left the
shoot utterly exhausted, but
with smiles on our faces.

My love of working
with latex started in
1994 in the UK where I
was trained to produce
latex clothing. I have
since designed and
manufactured latex

My mother is an artist and my
inspiration. Thanks to her, I don’t
think there has ever been a time that
I was not covered in paint or found with
a pencil in my hand. I wasn’t fortunate
enough to be in a school that offered art
as a subject but that didn’t stop me from
pursuing it after.
I have a Degree in Graphic Design from the
Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Even then in my spare time I use to draw
portraits for friends and their families.
Since completing my studies I applied my
design skills to promoting my husband’s
nightclub and helping people affiliated with
us.
I only recently rediscovered my passion for
drawing.
My preferred medium is watercolour
pencils and I use them in a technique called
burnishing.
I think an artist only reaches their full
potential once they find the medium that
suits them best.
Another great inspiration for my art
has been DeviantArt. I can’t stress how
important it has been for me to see what
other artists are capable of on this very
popular art website.
Until now I have been honing my skills but
I plan to create a business for personalized
portraits. It’s never too late to live your
dream.

LORI EARLEY
BIO
Lori Earley is a
contemporary surrealist
figurative artist who began
exhibiting her works in 2004.
Born and raised in New York,
Earley was an accomplished
and gifted artist from a young
age. As a maturing adolescent,
she discovered her distinct
style and fondness for painting
deeply personal subject
matter. She then began her
journey towards becoming a
professional oil painter through
fine art training at the School
of Visual Arts in New York
City. Her innate passion for
expressing mood and emotion
on canvas and paper along
with her mastery of technique
in oil and graphite was soon
recognized, in the United
States and abroad. Earley was
acclaimed as an exceptional
new talent, praised for her
authentic portraiture. Her
stylized, elongated subjects
echoed Mannerist elements

and the dramatic lighting
of the Baroque period. Her
distorted realism drew
attention from established
artists, collectors, and
galleries which immediately

While her femme fatale
portraits mature in style and
intensity, they retain her
signature ethereal quality
that embodies an undeniably
feminine force. Her portraits
always capture elusive
moments in the artist’s
individual perception and
experience, viewed through
her imaginative lens.

not, the figures I paint are
a reflection of myself and
whatever mood I am in at
the time, so every painting
is in essence a self-portrait.
Each mood is distinct,
ranging from subliminal,
cryptic expressions to more

often the primary focus of

My work is a fusion of
personal experiences
and influences- moody

The figures I paint exist in
their own esoteric realm

Playing fly on the wall behind the scenes with
BlackMilk Productions is almost like being married
to the Mob, writes Nerine Dorman
t sometimes blows my mind when I have the
chance to sit back and reflect on all that has
happened which has resulted in a slew of
short films, starting in 2008, with KiTTY KiLL,
Emma-O, 23 Rue d’Amour, Regression, The Lovers,
Jornada Del Muerto, Onrusbarend and Anna. This is
excluding some of the advertisements they’ve made,
which are worth hunting down on YouTube. Most of these
films have won awards, including the SA HorrorFest,
shnit Realtime and Auteur Film Festival. In the short
three years that the core group of BlackMilkers have
been active, they’ve certainly been busy.
The question I hear most often is “How the hell do you
guys do it?”
I usually reply by saying they have to do it. Most people
involved in the BlackMilk films are in the media industry,
one way or another, but usually in more commercial
aspects where freedom of expression can be limited.
They’re all immensely talented and their collaboration
using film as a medium is how they flex their creative
muscles. A BlackMilk film provides the blank canvas for
Ronnie Belcher, Thomas Dorman, Leon Visser and Este
Kira to collaborate on their dark, twisted and somewhat
surreal visions.
Leon says, “My day job consists of everything that I
have a passion for, filmmaking, photography, editing
and design. I am able to explore quite a bit of my ability
there, but with BlackMilk it’s different.
“It’s a relationship—one I have fallen in love with a
very long time ago. Every time we, as BlackMilk,
create something, there is a sense of accomplishment
I’ve never experienced with any other collaborators.
“It’s a bond that really, I think, could never be broken.
Our persistence is our success as a creative group.

We don’t wait for the world to accept.
We create because we want to. Like it
or not, we will be here for many years
to come.”
You never quite know what you’ll get
when the BlackMilk crew sits around
a table to discuss their next project.
What you can be assured of is that
you’ll have a visually rich final product
with its own lexicon of imagery that
often recurs. Be it a fish, gas mask
or flowers, these symbols are left open
to the viewers’ interpretation, often
within a non-linear context.

“23 Rue d’Amour stole my heart and
ate it. When I read the script I was
inspired. A new world opened before
me. There was so much that I could
play around with and elements that I
could add to the film. I do not recall the
complete briefing that I received, other
than ‘film noir’ and ‘old-school elegance’
without restricting the script by confining

It’s the behind-the-scenes anecdotes
that make the films for me, little place
markers that are almost like journal
entries, especially with some of the
outrageous demands they make for
production design. One such is for 23
Rue d’Amour, where they briefed a
food stylist to create life-sized, edible
penises—that were both cut and uncut.
The final results were eerily realistic,
especially when viewed in their container
on the day of filming. According to the
actress, they tasted good too!
This was Este’s debut with the crew. She
says, “I came on board about a month
before shooting 23 Rue d’Amour. I still
today do not quite know how I managed
to prepare everything in time, but somehow
it all worked out. Today, multiple
projects later, I am still here.
“BlackMilk is my mistress and ours is a
clandestine affair. She seduced me and
I willingly allowed myself to be mesmerised
by her black-seamed stockings
it to a certain period. I started sourcing
in the prop houses of Cape Town where
bit by bit the different pieces started
falling into place. A good example of
this is the eye-shaped mirror in one
of the opening scenes. During the
pre-production phase I constantly tried
to include textures and depth into the
design. I created depth with interesting
things, such as a dirty popcorn machine to
shoot through, a warped carnival mirror to
twist you into a different reality and big old
metal letters backlit for added dramatic
effect and background texture.”
Keeping up with the BlackMilk crew can be
quite challenging but then they excel at
functioning under some pretty frightening
time constraints. Pre-production meetings
happen almost daily in the run-up to the
shooting schedule, after hours and often
until quite late. How they manage on the
chronic lack of sleep I don’t know—and it’s
possibly why they’ve brought out their
own brand of BlackMilk coffee. If you
have a chance to lay hands on the stuff,

it’s worth every cent you’ve paid for it;
a custom-selected blend of coffee you’ll
find nowhere else.
Thomas tells me, “On a sunny winter’s
afternoon Ronnie was busy having a
cup of BlackMilk coffee when his mobile
phone rang. He didn’t recognise the
number, but proceeded to answer.
“On the other end was none other than
Garreth Bird, one of Cape Town’s top
independent film makers. He informed
Ronnie that he was planning on creating
a film screening event to be held within
the next month and wanted to know if
BlackMilk Productions had any film material
they would like to be included at this
prestigious evening. The only catch was
that the film should not have been screened
elsewhere, thus being a premier.
“23 Rue d’Amour stole
my heart and ate it. When
I read the script I was
inspired. A new world
opened before me.”
“All our films have had previous screenings,
but we did have a few adverts and
smaller projects that could possibly
meet the needs, Ronnie told him.
“Garreth suggested that the evening
should rather incorporate short films,
and not adverts of any kind.
“‘We will make you a film for this
evening,’ Ronnie promised, without
thinking about what he had just said.
“Silence.
“‘That is extremely bold,’ Garreth
replied.
“‘We will do it,’ Ronnie assured him.”
That was how Jornada Del Muerto came
into being, shot over two days over a
weekend. Onrusbarend, the film that
won BlackMilk this year’s shnit Realtime
audience choice award, posed a more
daunting challenge. They had to film,
edit and finish sound over a span of
three days. Well, they did it, even if I

felt like a widow in the process.Thomas
often crawled home in the early hours
of the morning—and he still had a full
day’s work waiting for him.
But what are the films about? Relationships
between a man and woman are a common
theme that is explored, but often the
darker aspects, such as obsession come to
the fore. Onrusbarend, one of their most
recent screenings, is typical in that it boasts
most of the BlackMilk hallmarks.
Thomas shares a bit more about their
creative process: “Ronnie and myself
spent many hours working on the script,
going back and forth with various ideas.
Each time the story seemed too obvious,
too predictable. We wanted to create a
story that resonated with us, that would
ignite the spark we both feel drives us
towards the end of the various projects
we create.
“When writing, we often take the other two
members of BlackMilk into consideration
and this was no different. We wonder
whether they will enjoy creating our vision.
Will it be challenging enough for them
but at the same time doable? Leon is
very good at knowing if something is
possible, and is very pragmatic. We often
discuss key technical issues with him
before finalising the script.
“After creating at least ten possible options
and stumbling through the quagmire of
many dead ends, we came face to face
with a creature summoned up from the
darkest depths of our collective psyche,
which Esté soon named ‘Onrusbarend’.
“Built from myths, dreams and distant
memories, Onrusbarend has many references,
most personal, many biblical and
some very South African. Many were created
intentionally; others on some deeper level
which we only discovered while filming.”
BlackMilk Productions is more than just a
film production company. It’s a creative
partnership and a cultural revolution all
rolled together with a perspective on
contemporary arts that is not subservient
to current social expectations.

Ronnie concludes, “BlackMilk was conceived
by the necessity to ‘label’ our
creative energies. Despite the fact that
this energy is still in its infancy, it has
changed the way we are perceived and
has given a platform for like-minded
peers to collaborate with us. BlackMilk
is an organic entity which drifts along a
clear path that is fueled with creative
passion. Drink BlackMilk.”
FROM NEXT MONTH ONWARDS
Ronnie and Thomas will review the most
offbeat, twisted and underground films
imaginable, for Kultür Magazine.
Anna, BlackMilk's latest short film, will premiere at this
year's South African HorrorFest, 3 November, 8:30pm at
the Labia Theatre on Orange.

Rock the River SA New Year’s Festival
2011/12
The year is speeding
to an end and the
party season is fast
approaching – do you know
how you will be spending New
Year’s Eve 2011? How about
heading out to a kick-ass
outdoor music festival with
your friends, away from the
madness of the surging innercity
crowds?
Now in its third year, Rock the
River SA Festival continues
to provide an exciting
alternative to conventional
New Year’s Eve parties –
allowing participants to enjoy
live South African music in
an intimate, safe and natural
environment. The need for
non-mainstream, small yet
professionally-run events was
first acknowledged in 2009
and since then Rock The River
SA has grown to an annual
New Year’s event.
This year’s Rock the River
SA New Year’s Festival will
take place from December
31st to January 2nd at the
Cape Town Ostrich Ranch,
located 20 minutes’ drive
from Cape Town along the
N7, towards the West Coast.
The organisers will once again
bring along a brand new stateof-the-art
sound and lighting
rig to provide three epic
stages for the more than 100
acts expected to attend. This
includes the Main Stage, the
Electro/Dubstep/ D&B stage
and a third stage for Metal/
Goth/Hard Rock and Punk.

How long have you been
playing and what got you
into playing dark music?
I Started Playing in 2001 so 10 years
now, I started by playing Metallica,
Megadeth, and ACDC covers then
moved on from there. I really have not
been playing extreme music that long,
probably only a couple years. I started
writing Church Of A Thousand Sorrows
in 2009. Extreme music is just a good
way to take something Negative and
turn it into something positive that
people can enjoy.
What would you classify your
music as?
If you see my facebook pages and
other forums, I classify Through These
Gates as Blackend/Death Metal but
over all its just Extreme music. Church
Of A Thousand Sorrows is a little bit of
everything which ended up being well
rounded.

You played your first gig
recently, how was the response
from the crowd?
It went well I got a lot of Support
from the people that I know that
were there.
I met some great people in the
process, so overall it was a success.
The last time I was on stage was
in 2008 so it felt good to get up
there and do what I love to do, and
Hopefully make a name for myself in
the town I live in Mammoth Lakes.
Being a solo artist, you must
have faced a lot of challenges.
What made you decide to go the
solo route and produce your own
material?
Through These Gates was originally
started in 2008 as a Learning Tool
really. At the time I was in a Dark
Progressive Metal band called Mark
Of The Infinite and we were getting
ready to record our second album,
and I needed practice for recorded
and double tracking guitars. I
left the band later that year and
Through These Gates music just got
better and sounded more serious.
Solo Artists are actually getting
more popular especially on the
Professional Level, Bloodsoaked,
Insidious Decrepancy, and Putrid
Pile are prime examples just to
name a few. Deciding to go solo with
Through These Gates with some
Encouragement from other musicians
I talk to. It ended up Being Through
These Gates that it is today Live.
Are you getting much feedback
from your first solo album?
Right now it’s what I expected, for
the first few months it was pretty
good and then just kinda died down.
The Feedback I have gotten from
it definitely has a positive side and
a negative side so you just have to
take that as a learning tool and move
on.
Give us a run-down of the gear
that you are currently using for
live gigs and recording?
Live Gear I use a Line 6 Spider Valve
Hd 100 half stack, my main guitar
is a LTD Flying V the Dave Mustaine
Model DV-200 and a LTD F-50 with
Emg Active 81 pickups. Drums and
bass are played back with my Apple
Ipod ran through a DI Box out to the
sound system.
Recording gear I use is My Line 6
Spider Valve and Line 6 Spider 2
amps. Bass guitar I will be using the
Line 6 Pod XT for that, drums are
programmed with Superior Drummer
from Toontrack and Vocals I use a
Shure Sm57 and a Shure Sm7.
What are your future plans as a
solo artist?
I am currently working on some
new material for my next release,
hopefully will be ready to start
recording Spring or Summer of
2012. I’m also working on getting
some shows lined up in 2012 and a
small merchandise line of T Shirts.
I’m just gonna keep doing what I do
and bring the music to the people.
The music world is so overlaped
with bands and different sounds. I’m
just trying to make Through These
gates stand out in the extreme metal
world.

Where did the name
Imperium of Man
come from?
The name is based on the
Latinate concept of power which
fits in with the lyrical theme and
direction of the band. In the
early stages of writing we based
a lot of our music on the work
done by Dan Abnett and Richard
Williams and even now, that
we have started going our own
route, the name remains perfect
for us.
What would you class your
music as?
I am hesitant to say technical
death metal, although that
is an aspect of it, we have
incorporated a variety of modern
and more old school pieces into
the music and lyrics in an effort
to create our own sound. Its
not as easy as it once was to

put a genre on us(for me) as our
writing style has changed a lot
over the last couple of months. I
just call it death metal.
You’ve been playing the
scene for a while now. Has
there been a show that you
guys have played and said to
yourself, “Now that’s a show
we would like to play again”?
just to show how much we have
changed and improved over the
last year. I’m certain we could
piss a few more Christians off
than we did last time too.
What’s the reception from the
crowds like and which was
the best show you’ve played?
The last few months has seen
a drastic increase in crowd size
Typically,you would expect that
to be a show that went really
well and that we got a great
reception at. For us I think
that playing with Becoming
the Archetype(USA) would be
something we want to do again
for us, I think the combination
of having played a Metal 4 Africa
show and the fact that we slowed
down on the amount of shows
we play has helped a lot. The
crowds have been awesome and
although a lot of our stuff isn’t

the easiest of music to bang
your head to, they try their
best and that’s encouraging.
Grindfest, M4A Winterfest,
Ultragig 8000, Noisefest and
all of gigs in P.E have been
awesome.
Are you planning on any
tours in the near future?
We have done two P.E tours
over the last 6 months so
we are having a little break
and then we are going to hit
Johannesburg
Seeing that you’ve played
alongside Crow Black Sky, is
there any other band/s that
you would like to open for or
have open for you?
Bile of man, All forlorn,
Wargrave, Juggernaught, Mind
Assault and Suiderbees are all
awesome local bands that we
have shared the stage with and
hope to do so again in the near
future.
Album announcements! We
are releasing a 9 track album
‘’Lexicanum’’ in the next couple
of months. It is being mixed and
mastered by world renowned
producer, Jamie King (Between
the buried and me, The human
abstract, He is Legend, In
the midst of Lions, Through
the eyes of the dead etc) It
will be the first album he has
done from Africa so its exciting
times for both of us. We have
Stephen Spinas (White Picket
Fence designs/Crow Black Sky)
working on the album artwork
as we speak. Once we confirm
the launch details we shall
head off for some touring and
promotions followed by heavy
viral marketing and a music
video that is already taking
shape.

of Tolkien’s homo-erotic overtones.
It is well-realised and populated with
characters that are living, breathing,
foulmouthed, scheming humans and
not the cookie-cutter elves, dwarves
and wizards that constitute the usual
fare of fantasy books. His characters
are men who fight for loyalty, gold,
land, honour, titles, country, revenge,
and out of sheer habit…
The Heroes of the title are standing
stones on a hilltop that has no strategic
value and yet thousands will spill their
blood to claim this insignificant piece
of land. The battle itself plays out over
3 blood-soaked days and this book has
that grim and predestined feel of men
marching to their death (sometimes
for a cause they neither believe in or
support), but with some surprising
twists along the way.

Hardcover: 512 pages
Joe Abercrombie takes a typical fantasy
scenario of Renegade versus King
and turns the concept on its’ ear by
giving it a realistic spin and filling it
with characters that talk, act, live and
die realistically, and brain-splattered
battle scenes so sexy the book should
be sold with lotion and tissues. One
could call him the Michael Bay of the
literary world except that Abercrombie’s
depictions of violence are great and
actually serve a narrative purpose.
Despite it’s fantasy trappings, The
Heroes is less of a typical fantasy tale
and more of a military adventure: a
strange hybrid that will grab you by the
throat (or balls to use the language of
the book) and drag you to a world that
is deep, vibrant and pulsing with blood
and guts.
The scale of this world is massive:
this is a land that could rival Middle
Earth for its’ complexity but has none
The story is told from many
perspectives on both sides of the war,
but the focus is on 3 men who have
their own reasons for going to war.
The coward Prince Calder, son of a
slain Northmen king, a schemer, liar,
betrayer and despised by soldiers that
served his father; Bremer Dan Gorst,
master swordsman, broken, disgraced,
former protector of the Union King, a
man seething with hate and seeking
redemption in battle; and Curnden
Craw an old soldier who believes in
honour, the right way of doing thing and
surviving, a man aware of his mortality
and fearful of death. The duality of the
characters is very cleverly explored –
these are men that in the final analysis
are at war with themselves, denying
what they are inside or in some case
transcending it for the greater good,
they are vibrant, engaging characters
that the readers will either see as
heroes or villains, but will definitely
identify with.
The Heroes is an imaginative and tautly
balanced epic acid mash up of Tarantino
and Tolkien that transcends its’ grimy
hack and slash origins and scores some
subtle hits about the stupidity of war,
politics and life itself while keeping a
firm tongue in cheek. Definitely not
your dad’s fantasy tales, The Heroes is
well worth a read.
