A Word from The Vice President of Operations
Hey there pilots! July was a busy month for Charlotte or I should say for me…
and Charlotte!
I am still so grateful to be at the helm of one of the greatest hubs in the
network. I have been told by a few pilots from other hubs that Charlotte was
once at the top of all the reports and awards for a long time. Now we are not
even placing (referring to the mid-year report, available in the Squawkbox
forum). It is my goal to get us back there.
The first thing I am attempting to do is get the majority of our 70+ registered
pilots back in the saddle. I am not 100% sure of how to effectively make that
happen yet, but I started handing out termination warnings to those who have
been inactive for over 2 months and a number of pilots have been removed from the system. Some have
responded while most have not and will probably be removed by HR, by the time you get this newsletter. There
is no need to have 70+ pilots when only 10 are active, ya know?! Its like cleaning out the cupboard of cans that
has been in there for years that you will never use. Sure, they have a long shelf life… but what’s the point in
keeping them if you will never use it.
The other thing I am doing is trolling flight simulator blogs and promoting American Virtual, specifically the
Charlotte hub in hopes we will get some new recruits.
I will say that the active pilots we have, are VERY active and I enjoy approving their reports. Read further in this
newsletter for some honorable mentions and statistics.
I’d love to start giving out full copies of software add-ons or software in general (i.e. a full academic P3D license)
as gifts to those who place in the top of the numbers monthly by forming alliances and partnerships with
software distributors and manufacturers! We need the numbers though. Those who make these awesome add-
0ns would like to know that by giving one away, several others would come and buy a copy. If we don’t have
enough active pilots, that won’t be a viable option. So let’s get to flying!

From the Handbook
Back in the day AVA (formerly USAVA) used to be
the company to fly with if you wanted to have that
friendly atmosphere where everyone kind of knew
each other, in real life or just through chatting on
ACARS, TeamSpeak or the Forums. While the lines
of communication were never closed, we need to get
back to using them and get to know each other…
again!
4.2.2 – TeamSpeak
TeamSpeak is a proprietary voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) application for audio communication between
users on a chat channel, much like a telephone conference call. Users typically use headphones with
a microphone. The client software connects to a TeamSpeak server of the user's choice, from which the user
may join chat channels.
More and more, TeamSpeak is being used by a large portion of our pilot base. There is a manual on how to install
TeamSpeak (also needs updating but the meat is still good!), in the documents section of the website. Hub
managers are on frequently and can answer questions about the simulator, flight planning or the juicy double
bacon cheeseburger I just had, lol.
We encourage free thought and free expression (you may discuss your personal views) but know when to stop.
Comments classified as derogatory to any group of people, including but not limited to any race, any sexual
orientation, political/religious affiliation and/or nationality, will not be tolerated. Harassment, name calling,
constant channel switching, spamming, etc. will not be tolerated. Always be positive, be friendly, and be
helpful.
If you need to have a private conversation, there are rooms for that or you can use the chat function and chat
directly with whom you’d like to speak to.
If you need help setting up TeamSpeak, please reach out to the VP of Operations.
4.2.1 - Community Forums
Not much helpful information is in the handbook about the forums. It is a place for friendly discussion, debate
and making new friends. There are several groups within the forum with some very useful information. Please
check it out when you can.
If you do not have access or forgot your log-in information. Let the VP of Operations Know

Commentary
VATSIM
The idea was pitched of doing monthly
online events, but no one from CLT
responded with any ideas. In the spirit of
opening lines of communication again and
getting to know your fellow pilots, I think I
would be great if we could get together one
night a month for a quick online trip.
Just so happens, Monday Night Madness
where Every other Monday Night, ZTL, along
with another ARTCC, will staff up two
airports, welcoming pilots to fly between the two features airports, with a quick turn heading back to their point
of origin.
On Monday August 13 th , Monday Night Madness with be doing CLT to RDU. A short flight that shouldn’t take
more than 2 hours of your time! It starts at 2300z. If you don’t know what time that is where you are check out
this time conversion chart
If you fly online for this event, you will not be charged a jumpseat fee (check “Will fly online” in ACARS).
Regardless of where you are at the time, just start off at CLT and join in. Then go back to where you were when
done with the event.
BE KIND TO EACH OTHER – By Sean Jackson
As I have been going through checking on pilots (Have you gotten an email from me
yet? You probably will soon), I noticed there was one pilot with a boat load of hours but
haven’t been active in a while. When I checked in, he told me that he felt mistreated by
some individuals on our Facebook page and as a result when and signed up with
another VA.
Listen, I understand we live in a technologically connected “right now” world and
people are easily agitated these days! But you should not always, if ever, say the first
thing that comes out of your mouth (or type the first thing that comes to mind).
Receive the message, digest what the person is trying to say and then… if it requires a response... from you, then
respond. But in responding, think how you would feel if someone said what you are about to say, to you!
Keep in mind that this is a hobby, first. There should be no need for hostilities or managers getting emails from
disgruntled pilots requesting to leave because of something someone said… or worst yet, just never come back.
In a world where you can be anything, be kind!

FSPASSENGERS
Pilot of the Month/Promotions
FSPassengers for P3D v4 has been released! Given the
amount of work, the upgrade from FsPassengersP3D v2
and v3 to v4 will not be free BUT you'll probably have a
good rebate. If you use it currently, go check it out.
Not sure how often this
happens, but I am going to
have to give this a newbie,
Pilot of the Month for August.
Congratulations Jackson
Whitely!
Are you interested in flying online with other real flight
sim enthusiasts and live air traffic control? Coming soon,
we will tell you how to make that happen and how to
build up your ranking! In the meantime, look at the
VATSIM manual in the documents area. We will try to
simplify it for you later!
http://usairwaysva.org/uploads/VATSIM_Tutorial.pdf
Jackson joined AVA as a Probationary First Officer on 7/10/2018 and has
been flying non-stop ever since. He has flown 25 flights, been promoted
to First Officer and amassed 31.5 flight hours in 21 days! When talked to
about fuel planning (he was going 100% all the time), he corrected it on
the very next flight.
Not sure if we have had a PFO as active as you before but Jackson, we are
happy to have you here at CLT. If you have any friends into flight
simulation, and they have the same drive as you… send them over!
Keep up the good work Everyone!!
