SOFT STARTERS
WEG Motors and Drives, the proven leader in
AC motor control, maintains their leadership role in
Soft Starter technology with the release of the 3rd
generation SSW06 Soft Starter Product Line. Many
of the advantages that have been proven successful
in WEG’s CFW09 Variable Frequency Drive are now
integrated into the SSW06 Soft Starter.
ADVANTAGES
A Dual Readout Digital Copy Keypad allows
maximum ease of operation by providing a high
visibility red LED display and a 2-line by 16-character
alpha-numeric display that virtually eliminates the need
for an instruction manual during set-up and operation.
The alpha-numeric readout can display in English,
Spanish, German or Portuguese. The copy keypad
function allows the storage of two unique sets of User
Parameters for easy recall. This can also be used to
download these parameters to other SSW06’s for easy
set-up and “cloning” of multiple soft starters.
“Oriented Start-Up” is a WEG exclusive advantage
that simplifi es the initial start-up of the SSW06. The
SSW06 asks for operational and motor information via
the keypad, thereby assuring correct operation and the
motor overload protection is setup accurately.
The Built-in Bypass Contactor will automatically
put the AC motor “across-the-line” once the SSW06
has smoothly accelerated the motor up-to-speed. The
bypass contactor will minimize power losses and heat
dissipation by removing the SCR’s from the motor
control and also provide energy savings and a smaller
overall soft starter package. The user can mount the
SSW06 inside of a more protective enclosure, NEMA1,
NEMA3R, NEMA12, NEMA4 and NEMA4X with minimal
cooling requirements.
Universal Source Voltage allows a single unit to
be used in applications with voltages ranging from 220
to 575V AC three phase, 50/60Hz. The appropriate soft
starter would be selected by the full load Amps of the
AC motor.

INTRODUCTION
Most Soft Starter and VFD installations are completed quickly
with a successful start-up and a satisfied User. But if questions
on set-up, operation, or troubleshooting occur, what
should be done in response? If the VFD stops operating and
the User’s production is interrupted, what should be done for
the quickest and most effective response? If a product has to
be returned for evaluation, what is the proper RA procedure
to make this happen?
INITIAL TECHNICAL RESPONSE
The first step is for the User to contact their local WEG office
and discuss the problem with their regional WEG sales
staff for technical support. Often this is a simple request for
Instruction Manuals or a question on the product that can be
handled at a local or regional level.
CALL 1-800-ASK-4WEG. (1-800-275-4934) If the local
WEG office or WEG sales staff cannot answer the question or
resolve the problem, then contact the WEG Regional Drives
Product Specialist (See Service Center Map for the WEG
Drives Specialist in your area) or in the event that person is not
available contact the WEG Atlanta Drives and Controls Department
at 1-877-WEG-DRIVE (1-877-934-3748).
After Hours Procedure for Technical Support?
The procedure for obtaining “after-hours” technical
support is the same as for WEG motors. The User should call
1-800-ASK-4-WEG and follow the instructions to reach their
regional “Emergency On-Call” person. If the “On-Call” person
cannot handle the situation, then the “On-Call” will contact the
appropriate WEG personnel for additional support. The I-877-
WEG-DRIV technical support number is only monitored during
normal business hours; (8:00AM to 5:00PM EST, Monday thru
Friday).
WARRANTY RESPONSE:
If the problem has not been resolved with telephone
technical support and the Product is still covered under
warranty, the following Options should be reviewed for the best
response under the specific conditions.
Option 1: Return the Product to Atlanta for Warranty
Evaluation
The customer can send the defective product to the WEG
Atlanta Drives and Controls Department for evaluation. Before
the defective product is returned to Atlanta, Terri Woodruff, in
the WEG Atlanta Drives and Controls Department, must be
contacted to issue an RA# to track the return of the product for
warranty evaluation. An RA# is required for all products prior to
their shipment to Atlanta. The RA# allows us to track the unit
through the evaluation process. The customer would be notified
on the results of the evaluation and quoted the repair costs. If
they choose not to have the unit repaired, there would be a $150
evaluation charge for services performed. If they decide to have
it repaired then the $150 would be applied to the repair charges.
Option 2: WEG Representative to Evaluate Product
“On-Site”
Depending on the situation and the User’s location, a WEG TAM
or WEG Drives Product Specialist or a member of the WEG
Atlanta Drives and Controls Group would travel to the customer
site to evaluate the situation. Unless otherwise negotiated,
warranty service would include only “in-house” parts and labor
and all Travel and Living (T&L) expenses would be paid by the
customer. Any exception to this policy would be negotiated prior
to the customer visit.
1-800-ASK-4WEG
TECHNICAL SUPPORT Notes PROCEDURES FOR WEG
VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES & SOFT STARTERS
www.wegelectric.com
Option 3: Technical Support from a WEG Authorized
Service Center
WEG has established a network of regionally located 3rd party
Authorized Service Centers (ASC) that can be authorized to
provide on-site and off-site warranty service. Prior authorization
must be given to the User and to the ASC before the ASC
is called in to the User’s location or if products are sent to an
ASC for warranty evaluation and repair. See the next section
for Non-Warranty procedures.
When a User needs to return a product for warranty evaluation,
the preferred procedure would be Option # 1; sending
the product to Atlanta. Before the defective product is sent
to an Authorized Service Center for warranty evaluation, the
User must get authorization to send it to the ASC as well as
contacting Terri Woodruff, in the WEG Atlanta Drives and
Controls Group, to issue an RA# to track the shipment of the
product to the ASC for warranty evaluation. An RA# and prior
authorization is required for all products prior to their shipment
to the ASC for warranty evaluation.
Authorizing the Services of the WEG ASC
The use of a WEG ASC must be pre-authorized prior to the
service being started with a PO# issued from the Atlanta
Drives and Controls Group or the WEG Drives Product
Specialists. If products are sent to the ASC or the ASC is
called into the customer’s location without prior authorization,
warranty may not be allowed pending review by the WEG
Atlanta Drives and Controls Group.
Warranty Service applies only to “In-House”
Parts and Labor
Unless negotiated in advance, the warranty service will cover
in-house parts and labor only. All T&L expenses, including
travel labor, will be the responsibility of the User.
NON-WARRANTY RESPONSE
For repair of products that are out of the warranty period or
fail due to non-warranty conditions, there are several steps
to follow for expeditious response. (The standard warranty
period for WEG Drives products shall be 18 months from the
invoice date).
As mentioned previously, the User’s initial response is to
contact their local WEG office to provide that first line of
technical support.
If the local WEG office or WEG salesperson cannot resolve
the problem, then the WEG Drives Product Specialist or the
WEG Atlanta Drives and Controls Group should be contacted.
If the problem still exists after the initial telephone support,
here are further support options.
Option A: Return the Product to Atlanta for Non-
Warranty Evaluation
The customer can send the defective product to the WEG
Atlanta Drives and Controls Group for evaluation. Before the
defective product is returned to Atlanta, Terri Woodruff, in the
Atlanta Drives and Controls Group, must be contacted to
issue an RA# to track the return of the product for non-warranty
evaluation. An RA# is required for all products prior
to their shipment to Atlanta. The RA# allows us to track the
unit through the evaluation process. The customer would be
notified on the results of the evaluation and quoted the repair
costs. If they choose not to have the unit repaired, there would
be a $150 evaluation charge for services performed. If they
decide to have it repaired then the $150 would be applied to
the repair charges.
Option B: Send the Product to a WEG Authorized
Service Center
The customer can send the defective product to an ASC
for evaluation and repair. WEG would not be involved in the
billing process and the customer would work directly with the
ASC for pricing, service and billing.
SUMMARY
The main concern of the WEG Atlanta Drives and Controls
Department and the regional WEG Drives Product Specialists
is to provide quick and accurate technical product support. A
vast majority of the times the situation can be resolved with
a single telephone call. A change in a parameter settings, a
different wiring connection or combination of both of these
can often solve what often seems to be an insurmountable
problem.
Teamwork is essential between the WEG sales force, WEG
Drives and Controls Department, the WEG Drives Product
Specialists, the ASC and our Product User’s to provide a
quick, efficient and effective technical support network.
The WEG Electric Motors national headquarters
in Suwanee, Georgia is also home to our own
custom panel shop. Opened seven years ago, the
panel shop was charged with the sole purpose of
integrating WEG variable frequency drives and
soft starters into rugged and reliable industrial
control panels. This shop provides an essential
value-added service to WEG customers around
the nation.
Our panel shop has developed the popular and
successful TPH and GPH soft starter product lines,
and continues to produce them, keeping them in
stock in five warehouses around the country. In
addition, the panel shop produces unique custom
drive and soft starter panels designed to meet
customer specifications. All of our panels are fully
compliant with Underwriter’s Laboratory UL-508A
program, as well as the National Electric Code.
Panel shop personnel directly involved in design,
assembly, wiring, and testing represent seventy-
five years of experience in system integration and
panel shop work. Personnel in essential support
positions add another eighty years of diverse
industrial control experience. We draw on this
valuable experience to produce panels of the
highest quality and dependability. All of our panels
are assembled and wired using the best industrial
practices, and each one passes through a very
meticulous inspection and testing process before
being shipped.
We offer custom systems from our Brazil and
Mexico Works as well.
