An extraordinary franking and destination Provenance: Christie's 1993, realised £4'000 10001 F The Collection of 30 Covers with the One Anna Value 1854 One Anna red portion of the famous India Used in Burma Grand Prix exhibition collection of envelopes & entires, with a variety of 1a red frankings, neatly mounted & written up on 29 album pages. The collection includes the following 1 anna frankings: - 1a paying the Indian inland rate up to 1/2 tola: six covers each with single frankings from a variety of Burmese towns and showing a variety of postmarks incl. Akyab cds in red on cover to London, Bassein octagonal B/12 in BLUE & apparently the only one known in this colour, Rangoon cds in red, Sarawah octagonal B/165 in black, and two covers to England from the Backer Correspondence, both with Toungnoo cds in red - 2a frankings paying the Indian inland rate up to 1 tola: six covers each with two examples of the 1a from a variety of Burmese towns and showing a variety of postmarks incl. Akyab cds in red on cover to Rangoon, Moulmein cds in red on cover to Calcutta, Moulmein Bearing in black wrongly applied on cover to Reading, England, one of the two recorded Pegue cds on reverse of cover to London, Pegu octagonal B/146 and “Pegue” cds on apparently the only known 1a franked cover to Switzerland, with Rangoon cds applied on arrival - 3a frankings paying the Indian inland rate up to 1 1/2 tola: cover fron Akyab to Rangoon with pair & single tied by octagonal B/5 with blue boxed Rangoon Ship Letter marking alongside; cover from Rangoon to Inverness, Scotland with pair & single tied by diamond of dots - 4a frankings paying various different types of 4a rates including; two 1s stationery envelopes with additional franking, both from Shoaygyeen and tied by B/171 cancels, addressed to England; 1a strip of four on registered cover from Moulmein via Rangoon to Calcutta; and entire from Moulmein to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, apparently being a unique usage to that destination - 5a franking paying the Indian inland rate up to 2 1/2 tolas: 1a strip of four, die II, stone C, position 84-87 plus single 1a die III, all tied by octagonal B/127 on registered envelope from Moulmein to Calcutta; registration fee was 4 annas which was paid in cash, a great showpiece - 6a franking paying the Indian inland rate up to 3 tolas: 1a block of six tied by octagonal B156 cancels on reverse of envelope Rangoon to Calcutta, being the unique block of six used from Burma, important showpiece and a great rarity India Specialised May 19, 2011 David Feldman SA
Lot N° Symbol(s) The most important 1 anna franking known, with pair and strips of 3 & 5 Lot 10001: The Collection of 30 Covers with the One Anna Value (continued) - 7a franking paying the Indian inland rate up to 3 1/2 tolas: 1a strip of seven, die II, stone C, position 42-48, all neatly tied by diamond of dots on reverse of envelope from Rangoon to Calcutta, apparently the largest known strip used from Burma - 9a franking paying 1a Indian inland rate up to 1/2 tola plus 8a steam postage: six combination issue frankings, with 1854 1a + 8a rose, to various destinations with four to England, one to France & one to Denmark - Two spectacular 1a frankings (illustrated on this page and page opposite) from Rangoon to Miss C.
