Welcome pack for
new parents & pupils
Congratulations and welcome! You are about to take the
first steps down a path which we hope will be the experience
of a lifetime and one which will provide you with treasured
memories and friendships for years to come.
Our community of parents, grandparents, staff, pupils and
guardians past and present is one of which we are immensely
proud. As you start to prepare for your venture of joining a
new school, either as a parent or pupil, we hope that some
of the information you find here will be useful to help smooth
the way.
These details have been prepared with the help of current
parents who all know what it is like to be new. If you have
any questions at all and you can’t find the answer here, then
please just email Aileen Wilson at a.wilson@strathallan.co.uk
If Aileen doesn’t know the answer then she will be happy to
put you in touch with a parent ambassador or member of
staff who does. Never feel afraid to ask.
Day pupils in the Senior part of
the School are allocated a study
bedroom for prep periods and study.
This is usually shared with one other.
Pupils can bring in items to decorate
the walls and make themselves
comfortable.
International pupils in Lower and
Upper Sixth can wear their own
national costume on Wednesday
‘Kilt Day’. Permission must be
sought from the Housemaster/
Housemistress.
Second hand
School uniform
Before you buy new items of uniform
or sports equipment, we recommend
you check the stock of second hand
school uniform in the Shop. Parents
can hand in uniform that is in good
condition and has been dry cleaned for
others to buy. Parents receive 70% of
the sale cost in return.
The School Shop is run by Mrs
Evans and can be found in the Main
Building. We recommend making an
appointment at busy times of year
(the start of a new term and before
half term breaks).
Items for sale in the School Shop:
• second hand school uniform
• toiletries
• stationery
• sport uniform
be bought or ordered.
You can pay by card/cash/cheque or
Name tags,
laundry & bedding
Name tags must be on every item of
clothing including boots and shoes
(this can be done automatically when
ordering through SchoolBlazer if
requested). There should be no plastic
poppers or buttons on duvet covers –
Velcro should be used instead. Sheets
are supplied by the School. Laundry is
uplifted twice a week.
Exeat weekends,
sleep-overs & holidays
What is an exeat
weekend?
This is a weekend
when pupils must leave
School (there are no
exeat weekends in the
Senior School).
Junior School -
Riley House
There are two exeat weekends in the
Autumn Term. These begin on Friday
evening. Boarding pupils return to
school on Sunday evening, day pupils
return ready for Monday morning
school.
All pupils must leave school during
these weekends and arrangements
should be made with host families or
guardians for these periods.
In 2018/19 exeat dates are:
• Friday 21st September until Sunday
23rd September
• Friday 16th November until Sunday
18th November
Vacating pupil
bedrooms
All Parents
The School is used by groups during
the Easter and Summer periods
therefore pupil bedrooms must be
emptied of all personal possessions
at the end of the Spring and Summer
terms. This also applies to those pupils
who have completed all of their exams
prior to the end of the summer term.
Half–term &
end of term
Every term there is a half-term holiday
of around one week.
This gives pupils much needed time
to rest, spend time with their families,
friends or guardians or revise for
exams. Pupils must leave school during
these periods.
Christmas, Easter &
Summer Holidays
The School is made available to other
groups during the main holidays
therefore your child’s belongings must
be removed from School at the end of
every term. This includes all clothing,
bedding, books and other items.
Unfortunately the School is not able
to look after your child’s possessions
during these periods.
Non UK
based parents
Please make sure you have arranged
for your child to stay with a nominated
adult or host family for exeat
weekends in the Junior School and
for half term and holiday weeks in the
Junior and Senior School. If they are
not returning home.
Sleep-overs
For boarding pupils outside School
Pupils are welcome to stay overnight
with other pupils at the weekend as
long as they seek permission from
their Housemaster/Housemistress
who will in turn seek permission
from you.
For day pupils inside School
Day pupils are welcome to stay
overnight as long as there are bed
spaces. There is a small charge for
this. Contact your Housemaster/
Housemistress for availability.
Any day pupil staying overnight
should bring a sleeping bag, sheet
and pillow case or a duvet, sheet
and pillowcase.
Communications
Mobile
phones
We encourage responsible use of
mobile phones. Pupils are welcome to
bring their phone to School but must
abide by the School rules for when
and how they can be used.
Keeping in touch
with your child
The School has very strict firewall
policies. The following apps are
allowed for use by pupils (depending
on age restrictions), at certain times of
day on the School Wi-Fi network:
• WhatsApp
• WeChat
• Skype
• Facebook
Full details about mobile phone,
internet and social media are available
in the Parent Handbook available on
the Parent Portal.
Network/
coverage
Pupils new to the School will be able
to connect their phone/ tablet/ laptop
to our wireless network as soon as
they have received and activated their
school network account.
We have control, logging and filtering
systems in place which are intended
to protect our pupils, our staff and
our data: these place restrictions on
pupils’ use of the internet in particular
and pupils will be made aware of the
rules relating to internet usage.
Not all networks work in the Campus,
however this changes as suppliers
improve the strength and location of
their masts. Currently the following
networks are used by staff and pupils:
• O2
• Vodafone
Parent
Portal
Keeping in touch with your child’s
activities and progress.
The Parent Portal is an online platform
linked to our core School database,
iSAMS. This is the area where you can
see your child’s timetable, access their
school reports and progress reports
(Form Orders) and download any key
documents from the school e.g. Fifth
Form curriculum choices. You will be
provided with log in details for easy
access.
Full details of how to access the
Parent Portal are available in the
Parent Handbook.
Computing Software
As part of our licensing with Microsoft, Office 365 is
available free of charge to all pupils, this will remain
active for the entire time they are pupils at the School.
Our IT department, to the best of their ability, will help
out when it comes to problems with a pupil’s laptop /
tablet etc. When there are issues with software we make
available updates when needed and can also reinstall
most software to pupil laptops, providing license keys
are available for that software.
?
We do not allow the downloading of software via the
Internet at Strathallan. This is both to protect our
network and the pupils’ laptops. If there is any software
which pupils require while they are attending the School
we will try to make this available to them, providing it is
either free to use or they can provide us with proof
of purchase.
We recommend that any pupil bringing a laptop to
Strathallan also brings their recovery discs in case any
major problem should occur. When it comes to hardware
faults, we will point the pupil in the direction of a local
facility where they can have these repairs carried out.
Classlist
StrathConnect
Connect with other parents in your
child’s year group.
Classlist is a simple to use, secure
digital platform that helps parents
connect with each other. The system
has been created to allow parents to
register, share and update only the
details they feel comfortable with.
Classlist provides a private group for
each class and year group. Access to
each year group’s data is restricted to
other parents in the same year group
at Strathallan. This means users can
only view information relating to
their year group making it easier to
communicate on a personal level.
With Classlist, you enter your own
information through a fully-managed
secure platform, you can choose
what information to share, who to
share it with and change it whenever
you want. If any parent is found not
respecting another’s privacy, they will
be removed from the site.
To register:
Visit https://classlist.com
Or download an App from either the
App Store or Google Play so you can
always have access to that helpful
information.
Connect with the Strathallan Family
around the world.
StrathConnect is a secure online
platform exclusively for our parents,
former parents and pupils and for
our Sixth Form. It has details of
events, reunions, member’s news
and opportunities to provide and
seek mentoring, advice with CVs,
internships and jobs. As a parent you
can both volunteer to provide advice
to others, including our Sixth Formers
The Assistant Housemaster/
Housemistress supports Housemaster/
She dispenses medication, makes
sure pupils get to any appointments
