From early in their history, the church has developed forms of daily worship. At the
Reformation, the people were encouraged to join in daily worship in their parish
churches, and the 1564 book of Common Order made provision for daily services.

Pastoral letter
August 2018
A man I met as I walked on Peebles High Street the other day greeted
me with warmth that matched the balmy summer air. Our brief
conversation focused almost entirely on the wonderful weather we have
been enjoying for what now seems like many weeks. Then, as we went
our separate ways, he cheerfully suggested that a good summer was a
sure sign that a severe winter would follow.
I hope that gentleman’s prediction will be proved wrong because after
last year another bad winter would be hard to take, but, in any case, it
won’t take a prolonged period of bad weather before we start to share
our murmurs of discontent once again. It might only need a cold
Let our every day
begin in
thanksgiving to
God for our
waking once
more to the
wonder of living
morning, a rainy afternoon or a windy night for our
moaning to surface once again. It seems to be part our
birthright as residents of the British Isles to complain
about the weather.
How blessed we are, even in the midst of this beautiful
summer, not to have to worry about climatic extremes.
A dry summer in the Borders is a far cry from the
devastating droughts experienced in sub-Saharan
Africa. The severe gales we endure are as nothing to the annual storms
in the Caribbean. Bleak rainy days in Scotland can scarcely be
compared to the horrendous floods that are a regular feature of life in
parts of Asia.
Let us hope the sunshine and high temperatures will continue for a while
yet and, more than that, let us be thankful for each new day, whatever
the weather. Let our every day begin in thanksgiving to God for our
waking once more to the wonder of living, for purpose and for passion,
for faith and for blessing, and for the people with whom we share our
time, our thoughts, our feelings and our love. Whatever the weather,
we have so much for which to be ever thankful.
With all my love,
Calum.

News from
Peebles & Eddleston
What we’re up to.
How can the local Church serve its parish community more
effectively?
That is the question that Eddleston Kirk Session is hoping to
address at a public meeting on Friday 24 th August.
An invitation is going out to people of all ages in the parish to
come and share thoughts and ideas at an informal gathering
in the Village Hall as the Kirk Session seeks to meet the
increasing challenges of being a parish church in the first
quarter of the 21 st Century.
There has been a worshipping community in Eddleston since
the time of St Mungo’s missions in
Tweeddale in the 600s AD and we are
determined to maintain that presence, but
as well as seeking to address the priorities
as we see them we hope the people of the
parish will feed in their thoughts about how
the Church’s role can be more effective.
The meeting is in the Village Hall on Friday
24 th August at 7.30pm and will last for an
hour. Tea and coffee will be served.
A Bite and a Blether
A Bite and a Blether, the weekly lunch club, meets every Wednesday from
11.30am - 1.00pm in Eddleston Village Hall. For a donation of £2.50 come
along and enjoy the camaraderie, a bacon roll or vegetarian alternative,
home baking, tea and coffee. All ages are welcome.
Eddleston Choirs
Junior Choir and Eddleston Voices resume practices on Thursday 23rd August
at 4.30pm and 7.30m respectively in the church. New members are always
welcome. The ability to read music is not required and no audition is
necessary. For further information contact Lorraine Mulholland on
Lorajazz@aol.com or telephone 01721 730332.
Eddleston Church Clean
The monthly church clean will take place on Monday27th August at 9.30am.

Kirk Session Report
Wednesday 13 th June
The Moderator updated Session on an event in Galashiels for the Year of Young
People. It was entitled ‘Growing young’ and gave rise to the idea to revive a youth
group within our church. Could we replace the evening service with a service for
young people? Ideas were forthcoming and it was thought best to get a group of
younger people together to help and also to find out what our young people might
want. Anyone with ideas or willing to get involved should contact Calum on email:
calum@topcop.org.uk or phone 720568.
Fees for funerals: as this is a service of a parish church it was agreed to leave the
fees as they were.
Ordination of Elders: a list of names was given to the Moderator of people who
might be approached to see how they felt about becoming Elders. It was also
discussed about producing a list of duties required for Eldership so that people
would have more idea of what it was about. As the number of current Elders is
decreasing thought was also given to a list of things for which help is needed and
seeing if anyone would be interested in helping with certain tasks.
TOPCOP Finance Report – 13 June 2018
1.Statement of Financial Activities
The Statement for first quarter to 31 March was circulated.
At this stage it was too early to draw any conclusions. Overall we are broadly on
target.
There was a surplus for the quarter of £6,024, which is slightly above the budget
figure. The main reason why there is a surplus at the end of March is because the
10 instalments to the Ministries & Mission do not start until March.
2. Bank Balance - The balance on the Treasurer’s Account at 13 June was
£33,391.55
3. Salaries - At the previous Kirk Session it was remitted to the Finance Committee
with powers to review the staff salaries. The Committee agreed that an increase of
3% should be applied across the board and this will be implemented with effect
from1 June.
4. Meet and Make - We now have 2 offers of grant.
The first is from Tesco from whom we are to receive £4,000 and thanks are due to
everyone who made that possible by putting tokens in the voting box. This money
should be paid into the Outreach Account shortly.
We have also received an offer of £2,000, from Foundation Scotland and the
money from them should paid shortly.

We have received a donation £170.10 from the Tweeddale Petanque Club which
will be the first money to be lodged in the Outreach bank account.
With those grants and donation the Meet and Make Club will be funded for at least
one year and can now get underway.
Applications were still in the pipeline with Awards for All and the Robertson Trust,
subject to clarifying some details. Discussions with the Robertson Trust were
ongoing. If either or both of those come up with an offer, this will allow the classes
to be held weekly rather than fortnightly at present.
Fabric: Church Bells maintenance service & recommendation - agreed to annual
service and renew deteriorating cables.
Church Audio system, projector failure- submitted for information, investigation
ongoing.
Church heating system, update on newly installed controller submitted for
submitted for action.
Church Hall heating system, filter to Central heating installed 20th May 2018.
Proposed Church noticeboard, Advertisement application, Requested Listed Building
Consent application submitted, await Planning conclusion.
Feral Pigeons -Environmental Pest Control company confirmed they will install bird
deterrents previously agreed, in early July 2018.
Fire Risk Assessment- Document submitted is under review by Fabric Committee,
when complete a copy and report will be issued to the Kirk Session with our
comments.
Words of Wisdom
Set the Right Example
‘He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his
father…had done’ 2 Chronicles 26:4 NIV
The punch line in a cartoon reads, ‘No matter what we teach our
children, they insist on behaving just like us!’ We smile, but it’s a
very serious matter. One expert says, ‘We teach what we know,
but we reproduce what we are.’ Your children may sometimes
doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do. So;
1 If you want them to have a quiet time with
God, you have one.
2 If you want your children to be in church,
take them, don’t send them.
3 If you don’t want your children using foul
language, watch what comes out of your
mouth.
4 If you don’t want your children to smoke,
drink, or do drugs, you leave them alone.
When you say one thing but do another your
children may still love you, but eventually
they’ll lose respect for you. And what’s worse,
they’ll think, ‘If the principles you preach
don’t work for you, why should I try them?’
Your example will have more impact than all
your exhortations. Read these two scriptures carefully. The first is
found in the Old Testament: ‘He did what was right in the eyes of
the Lord, just as his father…had done.’
The second is found in the New Testament: ‘I am reminded of
your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in
your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.’ 2
Timothy 1:5 NIV. Thousands of years separate those two
scriptures, but the truth they teach is timeless: set the right
example.
John Bunyan
the man who wrote Pilgrim’s Progress
After the Bible, John Bunyan’s wonderful Christian allegory, the Pilgrim’s
Progress, is one of the most celebrated and widely-read books in the
English language. It has been translated into more than one hundred
languages around the world and keeps its place as a Christian classic.
Names of people and places from its pages have been commonplace
wherever English is spoken. We need only recall Mr Great-Heart, Mr
Valiant-for-Truth, Giant Despair, Madame Bubble, the Slough of Despond,
Vanity Fair, the Delectable Mountains, the Hill Difficulty and the Celestial
City.
Bunyan was born on 28 November 1628, at Elstow, near Bedford, England,
of a poor family. He had little formal education and his father taught him
to be a metal worker. His first wife died young. His second wife, Elizabeth,
helped him considerably with his blossoming literary career. His conversion
was the result of reading the Bible, and the witness of local Christians.
From that time the Bible became the great inspiration of his life. He wrote
more than fifty books on Christianity. A Baptist by conviction, he had little
time for the Established Church.
Bunyan became a popular preacher, but because of his opposition to the
Established Church and because he did not have a Church of England
preaching licence, he was imprisoned in 1661. It was in prison that he
wrote Pilgrim’s Progress. It was not only Bunyan’s greatest book but was
destined to become one of the most popular Christian books in the world.
Pilgrim’s Progress is an allegory, using the names of people and places from
the Bible to teach spiritual lessons. The vivid and unforgettable imagery in
the Pilgrim’s Progress covers the whole Christian gospel from sin and
condemnation all the way through faith, repentance, grace, justification,
sanctification, and perseverance to heaven itself.
Bunyan died on 31 August 1688. His portrayal of the death of Mr Valiant
For Truth is Bunyan at his allegorical best. This brave old soldier of Jesus
Christ had received his summons to ‘go home.’ Calling his friends together
he says, ‘My sword I give to him who shall succeed me in my pilgrimage …
My marks and scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me, that I have
fought His battles, Who will now be my rewarder.’ … So he passed over,
and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side...’

More tea Vicar?
Me: I was doing an overnight at a hotel
away from home. I took my computer
down to the bar to do some data
entries. I sat down at the bar and I
asked the bartender, What’s the
Wi Fi password?
Bartender: You need to buy a drink
first.
Me: Okay, I’ll have a beer.
Bartender: We have Molson’s
Canadian on tap.
Me: Sure. How much is that?
Bartender: $8.00.
Me: Here you are. OK now, what’s the
Wi Fi password?
Bartender: "youneedtobuyadrinkfirst";
No spaces and all lowercase.
Just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year. Not to cause any trouble,
but shouldn't that be an even number?
Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local
swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water.
I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and
yelling like the passengers in his car.
If I had a dollar for every girl that found me unattractive, they would eventually
find me attractive.
I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are
flashing behind you.
When wearing a bikini, women reveal 90% of their body... men are so polite they
only look at the covered parts.
A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight, live longer
than the men who mention it.
Relationships are a lot like algebra. Have you ever looked at your X and wondered
Y?
You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's
common sense leaving your body.
I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row.
I decided to stop calling the bathroom the “John” and renamed it the “Jim”. I feel
so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child I thought “Nap Time”
was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a wee holiday.
