Chairman's Message
Well here we go again. The start of our fifth season
since being re-formed and our fourth season at The
Paycare Ground.
We are delighted to welcome the players,
supporters and officials of Bromyard Town for what
will be our 48th league game at The Paycare
Ground. Since their relegation from the Premier
Division at the end of the 2015/16 season this will
be our fifth encounter against today’s visitors.
Whilst we have managed to win on the previous
four occasions it has always been by a single goal so we know another
tough encounter is in store today. Win lose or draw their players and
officials will be most welcome to join us in the clubhouse after the game for
post match hospitality.
It was disappointing to lose the playing services of Lucas Hough and Sam
Giles during the close season. Players at this level come and go but Lucas
and Sam had been with us since day one so it was particularly
disappointing to lose them to Premier Division Black Country Rangers.
Changes to the management team also took place during the close season
with Andy “Tomo” Thomas, Shaun Bolton and Steve “Coyney” Coyne all
moving on to Sikh Hunters, FC Darlaston and Wolverhampton Casuals
respectively. However we are delighted to welcome a dozen or so new
players and in particular a very warm welcome to Assistant Manager Scott
Moore and to new physio Aimee Clemson.
It was always part of our 5 Year Plan to form a youth section and I am
delighted to say that since the end of last season we have set up 8 youth
teams all of whom will play here at The Paycare. We are delighted to
welcome them all to the club, many of them will be here today so please
say hello to them. We hope in the years to come that they will produce
many players to grace the first team.
Enjoy today’s game and here’s hoping to a great season.
Neil
View from the Dugout
Firstly, I’d like to welcome everyone back for our
first game of the new season. This a=ernoon we
kick off our campaign by taking on Bromyard
Town F.C. We hope that you’ve all had a great
Summer and enjoyed our pre-season games. I’ve
menAoned on lots of occasions throughout last
season how important you the “FANS” are. We
have the best non league fans any club could ask
for and the lads are going to need you all behind
them again this season if we are to achieve our
goals and push on as a club.
It seems an absolute age since the last Ame I wrote a piece for the match day
programme, many weeks have passed, the World Cup has come and gone, the
club has hosted events throughout the summer. So, what have we been up to
in pre-season training since the beginning of June ….
The re-structure of my backroom staff at the end of last season took place with
some big changes, seeing new addiAons being added to the Management team
Sco. Moore as Assistant Manager and Aimee Clemson our new Physio. A=er
the process was complete I held several meeAngs with Sco. and Mike Howe
our Sports Therapist both would be overseeing and playing pivotal roles in
seEng up our pre- season schedule.
We highlighted key areas and workloads we wanted to work on, with this all
organised and the structure in place the lads reported back earlier than usual
for Pre-Season on the 12 of June because we wanted to start the work load as
early as possible.
A massive amount of credit has to go to the boys a lot of clubs at our level
didn’t start back for two or three weeks later. But we wanted to improve our
fitness levels and push on from last season. The only way to do this is with
structure and planning along with the big part “HARD WORK”. We've
5

had good turnouts at training and everyone’s been posiAve and engaged, which
has been carried into the preseason games. The players understand what we
are trying to achieve and how we aim to execute our strategy for the season.
There have been some new addiAons to the squad, which we hope the fans will
be excited to see as they get to grips with our way of playing.
We did lose some keys players to teams playing at a higher level before and
early into pre-season training which was a bit of a blow. We will never stand in
the way of players who want to be.er themselves. But we sAll had a very
strong core of players from last season’s squad that had commi.ed again for
this season. Looking at the shortlist of players we wanted to recruit we were
excited to see how things would shape up throughout pre-season. Mooro and I
have been working extremely hard, spending numerous hours at the club, on
the phone etc, to ensure we are well prepared and hopefully a step-in front of
the rest.
We have completed a lot of different fitness and screening tests in the preseason
schedule to assure we could go into our first league game in the best
shape possible. Also, we handpicked our pre-season friendlies, because we
wanted to test the lads physically and mentally. By playing different sides from
higher leagues who use different formaAons, it's allowed us to work on our
systems and develop different ways of playing which no doubt you will noAce as
the season goes on. We are more than happy with the work completed in preseason
and believe the players have been prepared in the best possible way.
There will be some tough games to come this season, most teams have
recruited wisely as we have. There have been some management and ground
changes also within our Division, so we are looking to visiAng Bustleholme and
Newport Town’s new grounds and meeAng new colleagues.
Finally, we can't thank the commi.ee and volunteers enough for all their hard
work off the pitch. We hope to have assembled a squad that will be challenging
come the beginning of May and that everyone associated with Darlaston Town
is proud of.
“Beyond the
Dressing Room”
Welcome to the first ediAon of Beyond the Dressing Room which will be a regular feature
in the home programmes wri.en by myself and others which will hopefully bring you
exciAng and interesAng informaAon from areas “Beyond the Dressing Room”.
At Darlaston Town (1874) we try really hard to engage supporters in the team, club, site,
news and bring events and informaAon to people quickly, but we know we can definitely
improve on this. So, this is a new way to try and do that...We also think the club
programme should be a real joy to read as opposed to adverts and sponsor details, so that
supporters really do find a use for purchasing the programme.
I appeal to anyone if you have any stories, photos or items you want to share, then to get
in touch and I will be happy to write up the piece for you.
So where to start for the first ever arAcle. This has given me much cause for thought, I kind
of decided that I would look at seEng you supporters a challenge. I would like to lay down
the gauntlet so to speak and ask for your support to humour my unhealthy obsession with
all things Darlo. May I suggest we develop a running photo commentary of what it’s like
supporAng the club, it shouldn’t be hard, almost everyone including the Chairman has
camera phones these days, so that at the end of the season we have a collecAve account
that shows us what it means when we say “Darloaywe”
Clubs and their idenAAes are massively important to supporters, it centres and unites a
group of people. I mean even football hooliganism is largely a result of idenAfying with a
parAcular group, so it can’t be played down just how passionate people can get over
anything related to their club. As a bit of a social scienAst (not many people know I took a
degree in sociology and social policy) I am completely intrigued to know what it is that
keeps the Darlo faithful coming back Ame and Ame again and the experiences we all
share.
I have in my mind very set ideas about what it’s like to be a Darlaston Supporter, but I
would love to open it out and ask that at the end of the season I may be able to write one
final post that Aes it all together which includes your experiences and photos.
So, if you have social media then use the #darloaywe tag, if you have email
then please forward your emails/photos to us at nicolawaite@yahoo.co.uk or
8

if you’re old school then just come and grab me and share your thoughts and
experiences with me: good and bad!
One thing we do want at Darlaston is for you to feel involved in the club! This year we
welcome so many new members in terms of our youth team players and hopefully
one day we will see some of them in the blue and white stripes on a Saturday
a=ernoon. So welcome all if you’re new to us this season I look forward to geEng to
know you all, if you’re returning back again then hello old friends let’s enjoy another
season together and win, lose or draw I know our lads come 3pm on a Saturday will
have the best support in the league because nothing comes close to being a Darlo fan.
I will leave you with this fab quote from a Gooner of all people.
“When you start supporAng a football club, you don’t support it because of the
football trophies, or a player, or history. You support it because you found yourself
somewhere there you found a place where you belong”
Dennis Bergkamp
And I can honestly say to you all of you visiAng for the first Ame that I hope you find
that you belong, and I hope you can create many memories with us because that is
what non-league football and clubs like ours are about.
Welcome All, a new season! How exciAng! Let’s do this!
Darlaston Town Vets
The newly formed Darlaston Vets team mainly consists of players
over the age of 35. On Wednesday 25th July 2018 they played a
youthful Wednesbury Athletic team who play in the Birmingham
A.F.A. Division Three.
Club Vice-Chairman Garry Hale has been eager to set up a Vets
team for some time now and together with his right-hand man
Anton Allen, it all came to fruition on the Wednesday Evening.
The Vets team will be entered into a League with starts in January
and the games are being played on the first Friday of each month,
so a few friendlies will be arranged between now and January for
fitness and to form a squad of 16 players to represent the cub.
The game against
Wednesbury
Athletic started
well
with
Darlaston Town
having a Sean
Westley header
disallowed in the
opening minutes
for a push in the
box, the back
three of Sean
Westley, Steve
White & Anton
Allen made things look easy keeping out all of the Wednesbury
attacks and moving the ball across the pitch with ease.
The Captain on the evening, John Reeves Jnr, was relishing
renewing his partnership with best pal and current first team
player Mark Swann, together with Gavin Ingles keeping a hold on
the midfield throughout the game. On the right wing was Steve
Beach and first team manager Andy Parkes. During the game we
cheated slightly introducing a bit of youth with Sam Lynex who
played wide on the left and Allie Allen up front.
Darlaston Vets and most of the players in the first half went close
16

to scoring when Shaun Westley struck the bar from 30 yards out,
but Mark Swann opened the scoring before the half-time interval
with a fine finish from 12 yards out. Wednesbury’s attacks were
blunted by Darlaston’s back three and resorted to long balls into
the box.
At the start of the
second half
Darlaston made
changes to the
team with Garry
Hale, Jamie Taylor
and Dean Butler
being introduced
and Darlaston
nearly doubled
their lead with
John Reeves Jnr
taking control of a
loose ball in
midfield he
floated past 6 opposition players into the penalty area in a
finishing position, but the exhibition run was halted at his feet by
the Wednesbury keeper.
Darlaston’s second goal came from the penalty spot after young
Sam Lynex was brought down in the area. Sam dusted himself
down from the challenge and scored from the spot, giving
Darlaston a 2-0 lead.
For all Darlaston’s hard defensive work as Wednesbury pushed to
get back into the game, it was fluke cross that beat keeper Jake
Parker going in at the far post, with 10 minutes remaining.
The final 10 minutes saw Wednesbury Athletic throw the kitchen
sink at Darlaston’s defence, which were able to blunt all their
efforts and therefore run out 2-1 winners.
Some first game and result for the first official Vets game.
Obviously as the season progresses there will be further updates
and articles about the Vets squad and their games.
Darlaston Town
Youth Section
Since Darlaston Town (1874) reformed in 2014, the club has published two Fiveyear
plans, the last being in August of last year.
Within the new Five-Year Plan, the club wanted to create four youth teams, the
idea was to create a pathway through to provide players into the first team. The
club commi.ee decided that we would adverAse for established teams within
other clubs that would look to come and play under the Darlaston Town 1874
name, from the beginning of this Season.
The response that we received was astounding, myself and Garry Hale met up with
several teams that had expressed interest from the adverts and we explained what
the club’s ethos and ethics were and what our expectaAon was of any teams that
were looking to join us. Obviously, the meeAngs were two-sided affairs because
we need to saAsfy the needs and desires of any teams that would be playing under
our name.
Following these meeAngs, we invited a number of teams to join the new youth
secAon and were delighted that eight teams accepted our invitaAon.
The main club commi.ee expressed a desire that the youth secAon be run
separately with its own commi.ee structure and from the eight teams that agreed
to join, following an open meeAng a youth secAon commi.ee was formed as
follows:
Chairman
Secretary
Welfare Officers
Youth Liaison Officer
Commi.ee Members
Anton Allen
Richard Cooper
Nicola Jane Waite & Coz Beech
Gary Hale
Kerry Norman & Karl Norman
We were pleased that all teams are playing their home games at The Paycare
Ground playing at various age groups, , a list of the teams, leagues and days are
as follows.
Midland Junior Premier League – Saturday Mornings
Darlaston Town Jaguars – Under 12’s
Darlaston Town Hornets – Under 16’s
18

Walsall Junior Youth League – Sunday Mornings
Darlaston Town Cannons – Under 13’s
Darlaston Town Eagles – Under 13’s
Darlaston Town Vipers – Under 14’s
Darlaston Town Warriors – Under 14’s
Walsall Junior Youth League – Sunday A7ernoons
Darlaston Town Rockets – Under 16’s
Darlaston Town Lions – Under 16’s
Because the youth secAon had been set up from nothing since the end of last
season every team had no funds whatsoever. Therefore, the youth secAon
commi.ee suggested a sponsored walk to all the teams. Five teams took on
their suggesAon and on Sunday 22nd July 2018 over 100 players, parents and
commi.ee members completed the 10.2 mile walk the walk between The
Molineux to The Hawthorns The morning’s stroll was an outstanding success
raising in excess of £5,000 for the five teams. The money will go towards buying
team kits, tracksuits and all the relevant equipment needed to get the teams
ready for the start of the season.
Every youth team will be wearing the same home and away kit and tracksuits.
Darlaston Town 1874 have also given each youth team player free passes to
come and watch the first team home games so that they can experience and
understand the pathways through and what non-league football is all about.
As chairman of the youth secAon, I am looking forward to watching the teams on
a Sunday morning and am so proud of the club’s directors, commi.ee members
and volunteers that have helped form this youth secAon in such a short space of
Ame.
The club is growing and to go from 20 – 30 playing members to now in excess of
250 in three months is somewhat of a major task, but it should be that way
because in this day and age the only way to ensure clubs’ survival is to have your
own pool of talent feeding into the first team.
On a final note I would like to wish the first and all of the youth teams good luck
for the coming season and I will be there supporAng you all
Season Preview
I know it is the first day of the new season but please indulge
me whilst I muse about the coming season. I will remain silent
about my own club.
Last season’s runners up Newport Town look to be pre-season favourites. They
are smarting after being denied promotion, they have moved to play at Eccleshall
FC and added several new players including Ryan Asson from Telford Juniors and
the 2016/17 Division One top scorer Shane Thomas from Wolverhampton Casuals.
Old Wulfrunians are another club I expect will be pushing hard at the top of the
table. They have moved grounds to guarantee playing facilities up to Step 6
standard and whilst they have lost Noah Diallo they have retained most of the
squad which finished third just 4 points off top spot last season.
Team Dudley again look strong and have been active with 10 new signings
including Alex Smith and Jack Bailey who have both played for Dudley Sports in
the Premier Division. They are another team which have brought their ground up to
Step 6 facilities.
Last season’s fifth placed team Gornal Athletic have a new Chairman and new
Manager so they will be an unknown quantity. Worcester Raiders are another team
with promotion aspirations and have had some excellent pre-season results
including a draw against Alvechurch. They have also added former Wolves and
Port Vale striker Chris Cornes to their coaching staff.
Allscott have had some excellent pre-season results including a 2-2 draw against
Premier Division Wolves Casuals and may be a dark horse. Promoted Division
Two champions Sikh Hunters also look interesting. They lost just one game last
season, won the Division by 9 points, have moved grounds (again to another Step
6 facility) and have retained the majority of last season’s squad. It will be
interesting to see how Tipton Town progress under new manager Neil Perks. They
have been active in the market with several new signings whilst retaining the
services of some very good players including the Patrick brothers, T J Davies and
former Darlaston midfielder Sam Hesson.
I have heard very little news about today’s visitors Bromyard Town and I know little
about the pre-season signings and results of Telford Juniors, Droitwich Spa (a club
moved from the Midland League), Wellington Amateurs (relegated from Premier
Division), Wyrley and Willenhall Town although they are under new management
with former Gornal manager Matt Fisher now at the helm.
Perhaps we will all be a little wiser after today’s games.
