Scooter Etiquette

As our clown population
grows older, more of us
will be on scooters due to
mobility issues. We need to
set some rules for scooters
at conventions.
If you are on a scooter,
you cannot block aisles
and you cannot park in
the middle between the
two sides of seats. Hotels
set up the chairs with the
knowledge of the fire
department requirements. A
person on a scooter may sit/
park on the side, but not in
the middle. People would
not be able to get out in case
of emergency. Also, you will
no doubt be blocking other
people’s view of the lecture.
Everyone on a scooter
should turn their speed
down to “turtle’ while
inside. Most scooters have
a choice of turtle or rabbit.
Inside requires turtle; you
don’t need to run anyone
over to get anywhere faster
than the walking person.
Always, always be very
aware of other people’s feet!
I have had my foot run over
and boy does that hurt! My
friend “Dizzy Dave” had
his foot run over as he was
sitting during a lecture. Who
would have ever guessed
that would happen?
I gave scooter lessons at
the convention in Anaheim.
It appeared to go well. I
will always be available
to give lessons anytime.
I believe a number of
people rent scooters for the
conventions. We all need to
be considerate of others.
We are extremely lucky
to live in the U.S. where we
have American Disability
Act laws. Twenty years ago,
disabled people just stayed
home. Wouldn’t that be
awful?
