Sydney
The Scher family,
of Glencoe
This is Sydney!
She is a very
friendly beagle
that is 12 years
old. She is not
very interested
in toys but she
loves Kongs,
treats and
peanut butter.
Her favorite
month is
November because she loves to eat turkey (her
favorite food) on Thanksgiving! She has spent most
of her life in Glencoe and a little bit in Chicago. She
has an AMAZING sense of smell! Sydney is the best
dog ever! — Submitted by Charlie Scher.
The re-oriented parking lot at the Takiff Center will redirect how traffic flows through the lot and improve
accessibility for pedestrians and people with disabilities. Image Submitted
Major parking, traffic changes
coming to the Takiff Center
Jason Addy
Freelance Reporter
After a successful project
last summer added dozens
of much-needed parking
spots at the Takiff Center
in Glencoe, construction
crews returned on Monday,
Aug. 13, to start the second
phase of the project.
Phase I added 64 parking
spaces in the lot, as well
as new bike racks a traffic
roundabout, said Erin
Maassen, Glencoe Park
District spokeswoman.
“We were very short of
parking, so adding 64 more
spaces has helped tremendously”
over the past year,
Maassen said.
Each day, nearly 1,000
people visit the Takiff Center
on Green Bay Road to
use its gym, fitness and
daycare facilities and to
participate in dance programs,
karate, art classes,
and summer camps.
The goal of Phase II is to
redirect how traffic flows
through the lot and improve
accessibility for pedestrians
and people with
disabilities.
Crews will be flattening
out the slope of the lot
to make it easier to use for
people with disabilities,
part of a Glencoe-wide initiative
to make its buildings
and resources more accessible,
Maassen said.
“We have a lot of users
of all abilities, and we want
everyone to have access
to the community center,”
Maassen said.
Crews also will be constructing
a new plaza and
a designated drop-off and
pick-up lane for parents to
safely their children to and
from the center, as well
as adding new bike racks
and sidewalks to make the
center more pedestrianfriendly.
These changes will prevent
traffic from backing up
onto Green Bay Road during
the center’s peak hours,
which currently “causes
congestion for everyone in
the area,” Maassen said.
The Park District received
no complaints last
year about Phase I of the
project, but officials expect
Phase II to be much more
of a hassle for Takiff Center
users and others in the area.
“This phase will be more
disruptive,” Maassen said.
“We apologize for the disruption,
and we encourage
people to use the early
childhood parking lot, use
alternate entrances and just
give themselves a little bit
more time.”
Glencoe Park District
officials expect Phase II of
the project to cost nearly
$460,000, taking the total
cost of the project’s
first two phases more than
$1 million. Last August,
the Glencoe Park District
Board unanimously approved
spending nearly
$583,000 bid to expand
the Takiff Center parking
lot and add a walking path
around Reinsdorf Field.
The board is expected to
consider additional work at
the center once Phase II is
finished at the end of the
fall.
