Freight digitalization progresses as
Lufthansa Cargo joins live spot-rates
sales channel
Source: Lloyd’s Loading List
Date: 16 th July, 2018
Partnership with cargo.one enables air freight forwarders to book available
air freight capacity completely digitally, with immediate confirmation
Air freight digitalization is set to enter a new stage after one of the sector’s
largest players, Lufthansa Cargo, agreed to join the live spot-rates sales
channel cargo.one – an airline-independent digital platform for marketing and
booking of air freight capacity.
The partnership with cargo.one enables air freight forwarders to book
available air freight capacity completely digitally, with immediate
confirmations. Although cargo.one said it already has more than 10 airlines on
its booking platform, Lufthansa Cargo is thought to be its largest airline
partner to date.
The German carrier said: “Lufthansa Cargo is thus opening up a new digital
sales channel for the spot segment. The globally available capacities of
Lufthansa Cargo will be integrated into the cargo.one offering for this
purpose.
“The partnership between cargo.one and Lufthansa Cargo enables air freight
forwarders to book available air freight capacities for td.Flash and td.Pro

completely digitally and in real time across the entire available route grid of
Lufthansa Cargo.” The td.Flash and td.Pro products are the carrier’s timedefinite
products for express and general freight, respectively.
Lufthansa Cargo said the sales platform offered customers a completely “upto-date
online offering”, noting: “All important information about the
connections as well as the real capacity-dependent and dynamic live spot
rates are clearly displayed. For each connection, numerous alternatives are
displayed at a glance so that the optimal offer can be found quickly.”
Although the air freight sector began exploring online sales portals more than
a decade ago, including via neutral channels such as GF-X and CPS, the use of
neutral online booking channels by freight forwarders and airlines has failed
to take off in a meaningful way. However, new pressures driven by e-
commerce look set to accelerate their adoption within air freight.
Peter Gerber, chairman of the board of Lufthansa Cargo, commented:
“Digitization allows information to be distributed around the globe in fractions
of a second. This has given rise to new expectations with which both carriers
and freight forwarders are confronted.
“We are therefore now offering our customers the opportunity to exchange
prices and capacities even faster and to book services even easier. Booking
platforms such as cargo.one will in future support forwarders in meeting their
customers’ needs even better. This is the next logical step in the digitization of
our industry.”
Oliver Neumann, founder of cargo.one, commented: “We are pleased to
partner with Lufthansa Cargo as the leading air cargo airline in our mission to
make air cargo bookable digitally and in real time. Many solutions on the
market promise digital bookability; the reality is that in most cases the rates
offered do not give access to capacity.

Page: 8
“In particular at times of high demand, our solution offers air freight
forwarders a quick and easy access to capacities with immediate confirmation
at live spot rates.”
Neumann said the US$84 billion global air cargo market remained mostly “still
offline and immensely intransparent”, adding: “It takes a forwarder hours to
get quotes from airlines, bookings aren’t made online, documents aren’t
digital, and communication asynchronous.
“By building a platform that solves these issues, we will bring more
transparency to the overall market and enable freight forwarders to book
freight on a specific flight to a specific dynamic price with a simple click of a
button. Together we will change this market and build the backbone of
modern air freight.”

CargoSmart launches blockchain
initiative to simplify ocean freight
processes
Source: Lloyd’s Loading List
Date: 20 th July, 2018
New platform claims to increase document accuracy and traceability,
allowing shippers, forwarders, carriers, truckers, and customs agencies to
collaborate more efficiently
Freight software solutions provider CargoSmart has launched a blockchainbased
solution, backed by Oracle, to streamline and improve the current
complex system of ocean freight shipment documentation and supply chain
processes.
The software specialist, which has received investment from container line
OOCL, said its blockchain solution aimed to “simplify the shipping
documentation process, increase trust, and boost efficiency”, by establishing
“a digital baseline for trusted shipment documentation management across
the shipping and logistics industry”. It would allow shippers, forwarders,
carriers, truckers, and customs agencies to collaborate more efficiently
through the platform, which would provide “a single version of truth and an
immutable audit trail”.
CargoSmart said: “Connected through a blockchain documentation platform,
the entire shipping ecosystem can reduce disputes, avoid late penalties from
customs agencies, expedite documentation turnaround times, and better
manage detention and demurrage costs.”

Page: 10
CargoSmart projects a 65% reduction in the amount of time required to
collect, consolidate, and confirm data from multiple parties and to handle
shipping data that is repetitive in different documents by leveraging its
blockchain shipment documentation solution.
It noted that shipping document handling processes were currently complex
and include dated paper processes that involve many stakeholders across
countries, adding: “In addition, companies in global shipping have very diverse
technical capabilities and data standards, exchanging documents in many
formats including email, online forms, and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).”
On average, a single shipment can involve more than 30 documents
exchanged by all parties, often with multiple revisions due to human errors,
before it leaves port, the company noted. It said document handling was
particularly extensive for shippers and their logistics service providers with
specialized cargo. For example, shipping dangerous goods requires numerous
certificates to state that declared goods are classified and packed correctly.
“Some of the shipping document contents are filled repeatedly into different
declaration forms,” the company added. “CargoSmart’s blockchain solution
reduces the risk of misdeclaration and speeds up the filing process. When
documents are submitted accurately and timely, the cargo can continue to
move according to plan.”
Steve Siu, chief executive officer of CargoSmart, commented: “Blockchain
technology provides immutable records and a trusted network to offer secure
and traceable documentation. Providing a solution for supply chain parties to
auto-fill repeated and verified information can dramatically increase data
accuracy and efficiency for the whole logistics process.”
To develop the initiative, CargoSmart has been working closely with Oracle,
which recently launched Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service. Oracle’s blockchain

platform enables organisations to easily build blockchain networks to drive
more secure and efficient transactions and to track goods through supply
chains on a global scale, CargoSmart said.
“Its enterprise-grade architecture, interoperability and decentralized
governance model make it ideal for organizing and tracking international
shipments through all involved parties,” the company added. “CargoSmart will
continue working with Oracle to build comprehensive blockchain networks
with breadth and depth to serve key customers.”
Amit Zavery, executive vice president of Oracle Cloud Platform, commented:
“Maritime shipping is essential to global trade, but it often suffers from
inefficiencies in the complex documentation processes across many involved
parties. CargoSmart’s new solution, powered by Oracle’s blockchain cloud
platform can help engender trust and confidence in the ecosystem. Its gives
users across the entire shipping ecosystem a trusted, secure, scalable, and
resilient means to share information, helping to speed up turnaround time,
reduce disputes and lower costs.”
The move comes as a number of container shipping and logistics companies
have already launched initiatives to explore and develop the use of blockchain
technology. Maersk and IBM announced a blockchain joint venture in January,
while APL and Pacific International Lines have been testing blockchain
solutions with partners.
However, the chief executives of Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express
have pointed to the lack of industry standardisation as the main stumbling
block to a further application of the technology in container shipping.
