LIEUTENANT GENERAL
A WORLD FREE FROM BULLYING.

BULLY ZERO strives to create
a world free from bullying.
A world where teenagers aren’t
driven to suicide by tyrants
online. Where a workplace
is a welcoming environment,
not a place of anguish.
Like many other Foundations,
BULLY ZERO was born
out of tragedy. This sense
of loss, and need to act, drives
us to work with victims and
their families to bring about
changes both in law and
in our national culture.
To do that, BULLY ZERO
delivers its established services
nationally, and ultimately,
globally. Through university
partnerships, BULLY ZERO
creates research-led
educational programs to
deliver to the community.
BULLY ZERO continues
to provide its one-of-a-kind,
tailor-made programs to
schools and workplaces
—building on its ability as
a preventative measure,
rather than a reactive one.
The Foundation’s services
go from strength-to-strength
—with a goal to becoming
a long-term part of the
curriculum—further enhancing
its ability to prevent bullying
amongst our youth.
“BULLY ZERO is a Foundation
that stands as a legacy for all
victims of bullying. Their stories
galvanise the message BULLY
ZERO presents in each
face-to-face session—evoking
emotion in the audience and
calling participants to stand
up for change. The only way
to create a world free from
bullying is to educate entire
communities and embed social
nuances, such as respect and
empathy into everyday life.”
STORY

Equipped with the desire to
make a difference, a group of
passionate individuals joined
forces in 2012 to create BULLY
ZERO. The Foundation was
unique in the driving forces of
its team, which included senior
members of the Police force,
volunteers, psychologists,
lawyers, teachers, politicians,
and the families of bullying
victims.
In 2009, prior to the formation
of BULLY ZERO, Ali Halkic’s
son Allem tragically fell victim
to cyber-bullying. Through the
determination of not wanting
the same fate for another child,
Ali successfully lobbied the
Victorian State Government
in erecting barriers along the
Westgate Bridge in Melbourne
—preventing hundreds of
suicides as a result. In 2011,
Allem was formally recognised
as a victim of crime. This was
a landmark decision and the
first of its kind in Australia.
Ali’s determination for change
has continued with his work as a
director of BULLY ZERO.
BULLY ZERO is the only
Foundation in Australia that
delivers face-to-face programs
by qualified teachers, and has
received the endorsements of
both the Office of the eSafety
Commissioner and WorkSafe
Victoria to deliver cyber safety
and bullying prevention
programs.
Every student, worker, parent
and young person that engages
with BULLY ZERO helps
to shape a world free from
bullying.
BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

While the reasons are varied
and complicated, the loss of
young Australians to intentional
self-harm continues to trend
upwards. There have been
multiple examples where these
tragedies arise as a consequence
of bullying.
The largely universal use
by young people of portable
hand-held devices, which
cannot be easily monitored by
teachers, parents or guardians,
constitutes a growing threat
to mental health and provides
a straightforward, immediate
and targeted channel for
abusive communication.
The impact of the loss of a
loved one is devastating and
far-reaching. For many others
the impact of bullying on their
general well-being, self-esteem,
academic performance and
employment prospects is telling.
Recent changes in legislation
have enabled serious cases
of bullying to be deemed
criminal. However, much work
remains to be carried out to
prevent bullying—through
better awareness, preventative
education and resultant
behavioural change.
TESTIMONIALS

“BULLY ZERO Foundation
ran a presentation for key
leaders within the Department
of Home Affairs in Victoria,
including the Australian Border
Force. The session provided a
real-life insight into the impacts
of bullying and harassment
and strategies for creating
a workplace culture free of
such issues. The presentation
drove home the importance
of a zero tolerance to bullying
and harassing behaviour
and the consequences if
not addressed.”
“LaManna has been an avid
supporter of BULLY ZERO
since it’s conception. BULLY
ZERO conducted several
sessions for all employees
of LaManna, to demonstrate
the detrimental effects
that bullying can have on
individuals. The presentation
provided a true insight on
how bullying can impact not
only the individual, but those
around them and through
the use of real life scenarios
pushed across the crucial
message of a zero tolerance
to bullying. The presentation
was touching and received
an amazing response across
the board. The Foundation
is constantly pushing to
put a stop to bullying in the
community and LaManna
is proud to be a sponsor of
such an active and successful
Foundation.”
“This is a fantastic program.
We offered the program to
staff at PTV who are parents
or have regular contact
with children, on how to
deal with the impacts of
bullying. The presentation
was a perfect combination
of stories to really push the
message across of the horrific
impacts of bullying, and also
practical tips and advice for
parents on how to manage
and watch out for bullying.
We had great feedback from
staff who learned a lot from
the presentation. Thank you
BULLY ZERO for helping to
spread awareness of bullying.”
Bullying behaviours at work
produce a complex set of
potential consequences for
both employers and employees.
Victims of bullying may face
significantly higher health
risks, ranging from stress to
severe self-harm. The ordeal
of bullying is also proven to
affect their work performance
and attendance.
On the other hand, perpetrators
of bullying may also exhibit
mental health symptoms and
lay themselves open to civil
or criminal legal proceedings
in serious cases.
The consequences for
employers can be wide-ranging,
with incidents being brought
forward to the Fair Work
Commission, the relevant work
cover authority, the Police or
individual employees.
These lead to potentially
serious repercussions for
employers and their businesses.
Consequences of bullying
in the workplace can be felt
everywhere. The most
common occurrences are the
risks of higher absenteeism,
poor workplace culture,
productivity loss, work cover
claims and damage to
corporate reputation.
