Journey
40 Years of Creative Dabbling
(1978 - 2018)
Once upon a time, my mum gave me a pencil and told me to draw some lines on
a person's face. "Turn him into a nice clown" she said... It was Carnival in my
home town and the whole family worked non-stop for 4 days to colour the faces
of hundreds of carnival goers. For 4 days these faces were our canvas and I
loved it.
Many years later, my dorment artistic aspirations bubbled to the surface and
grabbed me full blast. I dove into heaps of books and tutorials, gathered new
and scrap materials and started on my creative journey by making Venetian
masks in plaster, leather and papier-mâché.
While life interfered I went on a long art-free hiatus after which I picked up my
brushes and started painting in water colour, acrylics and mixed media for a
very brief period only to fall in love with the more sculptural and tactical polymer
clay. So many techniques, endless variations... The ideal medium for my short
attention span.
After 8 years of studying and exploring this medium, it was time to pass on my
knowledge and I ended up making my own tutorials and teaching various classes,
creating more aficionados along the way.
And then life happened - big time. A traumatic event forced me to stop all
activities for a couple of years.
No longer having the strength to work with clay, I have gone back to my old love
of colouring and painting with a variety of media, giving a new life to some old
rags, bits and pieces, boxes and books. Oh yes... and the faces are back as
well. Dog faces this time :)
40 years after painting those first faces, I look back on the colours in my life and
I thank my husband, my son, and my very dear friends for supporting me along
the way and for believing that I had some sort of talent.
Thank you!
