Gold Rush River History
In 1848 the discovery of gold by James
Marshall at Sutter’s Mill on the
South Fork in Coloma, spread a
Gold Rush to the North and Middle
Forks. The “world rushed in” to pan
and dig the precious metal from the
river and canyons. Both the North and
Middle Forks were intensively mined,
and sizeable towns and camps grew up within the
canyons and along the rivers to support the
mining operations. Today, the supply roads and
trails the miners used are the nucleus of the
recreational trail system in the Auburn State
Recreation Area. The Gold Rush Mining
Museum is located in the historic Auburn Depot,
(see Local Museums) and offers a glimpse into
Placer County’s Gold Rush history.
Mountain Quarries
Railroad Bridge
The Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, also
known locally as “No Hands Bridge,” is the most
recognizable historical monument in the Confluence
area. The Pacific Portland Cement Company
completed the 170 foot long, triple-arch span
concrete bridge in 1912. At that time it was the
longest concrete arch railroad bridge in the world.
The bridge and connecting rail line were built to
haul limestone from the Portland Cement Quarry,
located a mile up river on the Middle Fork, to the
Southern Pacific main line in Auburn. In 2004
the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge was
added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2014, the bridge was designated
California Historic Landmark #1051.
LOCAL FARMERS DISCOVER GOLD THAT GROWS BACK
n a warm and busy Wednesday
afternoon at Amber Oaks
Berry Farm fruit shed, Tim
Boughton quickly eats a sandwich made
with freshly plucked tomato and basil
while packing produce into boxes for a
customer.
Behind a tall counter, Rhonda Boughton
rings up the total at the cash register.
The customer, who’s driven from
Reno with her family and dogs, asks
if she can buy a watermelon half, and
Tim Boughton sets about cutting and
packing the fruit for travel. He then
slices up the other half of the melon
and offers a bright, sweet wedge to each
of his customers, his wife, and, shifting
into Spanish, the field hands.
His customer mentions that she’s never
tasted kiwi, so Boughton pulls one out
of the cooler and slices the small, brown,
furry fruit for her.
This is the busiest time of year for the
Boughtons, who will celebrate their 35th
anniversary in September and have been
farming the land off of Mount Vernon
Road for 30 of those years. They raised
three children on the farm, and their
children could all work the register by the
time they were 9 years old.
Tim Boughton grew up in the
neighborhood, living for a time adjacent
to the property he now farms, and he’s
always had his hands in the soil. At the
age of 7 he was awarded the Spreckels
Sugar Beet prize for growing the beet
with the highest sugar content.
At 12, he tended his neighbor’s crops,
and when he saw that the peach trees
were dying, he invested in a few raspberry
vines. Now he and his wife have 190
raspberry vines in rows 300 feet long.
Next, he added thornless blackberries.
“Berries want to live,” he said.
And right now, the u-pick berries are not
only living, they’re thriving. The farm is
full to bursting with Chester blackberries.
The berries that aren’t picked by local
customers are packed up and carted to
farmers’ markets from Marin County to
Reno, along with a cornucopia of other
fruits and veggies. In addition to berries,
the Boughtons grow 120 various crops
on close to 30 acres on three properties.
When the berries are finished, it will
be kiwi season, and then chestnuts,
and then mandarins.
“You can walk out there any time of
the year and find something to eat,”
Tim Boughton said proudly, pointing
to the fields in the distance.
In keeping with the tradition of the
Tanaka family who owned the property
in the 1940s, the Boughtons pick 1,200
persimmons each year, hang them in
rows and hand massage them every day
for three weeks.
“They’re like candy,” Tim Boughton
said. “We sell out in a month.”
While Rhonda Boughton enjoys
the produce and the customers, she
particularly loves the quiet moments
on the land. She recalls picking ripe
peaches from an old tree on a recent
morning, tearing off pieces of fruit for
the two dogs by her side.
really cool.”
Even though it came to him naturally,
Tim Boughton didn’t always want to be
a farmer. His dream was to spend every
day in the mountains, digging for gold
instead of potatoes.
In the off-season, he still spends his
days in the hills, mining for treasure.
Except, for the Boughtons, there is no
off-season.
On a rare day mining with friends, Tim
Boughton carries along a home-grown
watermelon to share at lunch. Between the
photos of handfuls of gold nuggets, he snaps
a shot of his friends with red watermelon
juice running down their arms.
Recently, Boughton wasn’t able to join his
friends on their mining trip. They texted
him photos of their hard-won treasure.
He texted them back with a photo of his
own: Rows and rows of verdant green crops
growing in the sunshine.
“This is my gold,” he wrote. “It’s the
kind that grows back.”
“It was so beautiful,” she said, dabbing
at the tears in her eyes with a berrystained
handkerchief. “It was just
MAX’S DELI & CATERING
A community staple for over 24 years gets a fresh new look!
alking into Max’s Deli
and Catering, I was
quickly pleased to find a
clean, warm, bright environment. This
is not your typical strip mall sandwich
shop, Max cares about his product and
more importantly his customers.
“He[Max] actually answered the phone
the first time I called and every time
after that. I adore Max,” explains Angie,
who then said you should do a story on
his business. “No, really it’s amazing!”
This is exactly how I would describe
his business. I am no stranger to the
restaurant business. The grueling
repetitive nature can sap the energy
right out of you. That is why when Max’s
Deli and Catering suffered from a flood
late last year, Max Berkowitz owner,
took the forced opportunity to revamp
the whole place.
Above: Max prides himself on being a early implementor of technology he was the first business in
Auburn to utilize the Square system. Max’s has amazing salads. Need Catering? Max’s Deli has everything
you need to cater an event. Max’s Deli’s best seller the #6 The Californian - Turkey Avocado. Max’s Deli new
on the menu. We have updated and upgraded all
the ingredients and quality, but for example, still
to this day a #6 is a turkey avocado and remains our #1 seller from day one.”
Max did his research on his pastrami that he uses. I started researching and
asking the question about who has the best pastrami sandwich on the west
coast. Langer’s Deli kept coming up, so he began to ask questions. Finally, he
got what he calls close enough, and I have to tell you that it is amazing.
THE MONKEY CAT
A focus on sourcing fresh local produce, local wine, beer and spirits.
ith lights strung
between lush trees and
smiling faces passing
by, Lincoln Way has long been the
heart of downtown Auburn. Monkey
Cat, a restaurant named after an
elusive exotic creature from old tales,
has been serving Auburn’s visitors and
locals alike for 13 years.
Owners Jim and Trish Bril moved
from San Francisco shortly before
they bought the 120-year-old building
that they would later transform into
Auburn’s own continental bistro.
Those who are familiar with the town’s
history know that this historic building
once served as a general store. Today,
the original flooring reminds customers
that the dedication to serving the
community is quite literally the
foundation of Monkey Cat.
The Bril’s work closely with their
culinary team to craft seasonal and
sustainable menus, while integrating
as many local ingredients as possible.
Jim admits that while the menu
changes often, there are just some
staples that stick around simply
because they are in high demand
among the regulars. These more
popular dishes include the delicately
grilled duck breast with a light ginger
mandarin sauce and the charbroiled
rib-eye served with a red wine herb
jus and tenderly roasted potatoes—is
your mouth watering yet?
In addition to the bold, fresh fare, there
is also a heavy focus on local sourcing.
Monkey Cat has over 30 wine and beer
selections, and out of this extensive list
a majority of the wines are from Placer
County and 4 of the beers on tap are
locally brewed.
Monkey Cat boasts a dog-friendly
outdoor patio and an elegant private
dining room. Events such as wedding
gathering needs.
THE MONKEY CAT LEGEND
ver the years, tales of the
exotic and elusive Monkey
Cat have circulated around
the world. Details about this amazing
creature have varied, but what they all
have in common are descriptions of the
Monkey Cat’s piercing green eyes.
The legend also tells of a great wildlife
explorer who spent a lifetime trying
to locate and capture this elusive and
prized animal. His search took him from
Bombay to Africa and Indonesia to
South America.
Despite a few near captures, the Monkey
Cat always was able to slip away until it was
finally found right here in Auburn, CA
FROM BRICK AND MORTAR
TO MOBILE FOOD BLISS
hen you are in the restaurant industry,
you think that you have tried it all. My
wife and I ran a high-end restaurant
in the cliffs of Monterey Bay. During
our time in the industry, we had the pleasure of eating
at some fabulous restaurants. That said, this little food
trailer at a brewery in Auburn gave me one of the best
things I have eaten in a long time.
The Lamb and The Wolf travels all over the foothills
with his Greek and Italian cuisine. Owner Michael
Athanasopoulos(Michael Wolf) traded the stresses of
owning a restaurant to doing everything on his own.
“I have complete control over everything. I make a
mistake that’s on me. I have to fix it.” says Mike.
Good friends of mine Anna and Dave Gibson and
business owners, The Hearing Aid Center in Auburn,
prompted me to do a story on food trucks. I thought
I would approach this as a catch all one story on all
food trucks in Auburn. I was so surprised at the quality
of food that I am doing a longer series having a food
truck of the month feature in every issue.
So back to the food. Yes, it is incredible. Everywhere I
look this food truck enjoys a five-star rating; Google,
Yelp, and Facebook. Not just one or two reviews his
Facebook page has 86 and an average rating of fivestars.
He has the traditional Greek foods as well as a
surprise.
I was so obsessed with this I made it my cover for this
month. The Pizza Cone. I also went back the next
day and had another, and as I write this, I need to
find where he is going to be next. The combination
of perfectly cooked crispy crust, melted pile of cheese
and pepperoni, then the smooth tang of that sauce.
It is so good that you have to try it there is no way
to describe just how delicious this is. Of course, I ask
how do you do it?
“I had a machine specially made for me in Greece, as
far as I know, I have the only one.” Says Mike
It took Mike six months how to
figure out how to use the special
oven and to perfect the recipe.
You may be thinking, but he
doesn’t know how to cook pizza,
he cooks Greek food. Mike has
been honored to be on the United
States Pizza Team for seven years.
He has only been in the states for
seven years. In 2015 he won first
for this pizza cone, so I am happy
to so it’s not just me.
Why the Lamb and the Wolf?
“Well, that’s simple. Wolf for my last
name. Lamb because every where I
went I was asked do you have a
lamb Gyro? I started making one,
and there you go.” says Mike.
Five stars for Monroe Transmission – and six stars for Rich. My transmission malfunctioned on the way up to Lake Tahoe and I was stranded in Newcastle,
which is about 200mi from where I live. I was fortunate enough to have AAA tow my car to Monroe Transmission. Despite being slammed before
Labor Day weekend, Rich was gracious enough to take a look at my transmission and help diagnose the issue. Since I live in the Bay Area I decided
to tow my car home and have the transmission repaired locally. Despite not having the actual repair done at Monroe, Rich followed up by sending all
the documentation to my Nissan dealership and made sure I well informed/equipped to handle the repair locally. So far working with my local Nissan
dealership has been an absolute nightmare and they are continuing to rip me off with service charges. I WISH I LEFT MY CAR AT MONROE! ~Cali C.
1 TEASPOON PICKLING SPICE
2 SLICES GINGER, PLUS 1 TEASPOON
GRATED PEELED GINGER
3, 1 LB RACKS BABY BACK PORK RIBS
2 TEASPOONS VEGETABLE OIL
1 CLOVE GARLIC, GRATED
1/4 CUP DRY SHERRY
1/3 CUP CHICKEN BROTH
1/3 CUP BALSAMIC VINEGAR
1/4 CUP SOY SAUCE
FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPER
1/4 TEASPOON CAYENNE PEPPER
*1 15OZ BOTTLE OF BARBECUE SAUCE
(I USE MASON MADE)
*1/4C ORANGE MARMALADE
Make the brine: Remove 3 wide strips zest
from the orange with a vegetable peeler.
Squeeze 3 tablespoons orange juice and
set aside. Combine the peels from the
oranges, 4 cups water, 1/3 cup salt, 1/2 cup
brown sugar, pickling spice and ginger
slices in a medium saucepan over mediumhigh
heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until
the salt and sugar dissolve. Remove from
the heat and add 4 cups cold water; let
cool to room temperature.
Put the ribs meat-side down on a cutting
board. Insert a paring knife between the
membrane and the bones on one end,
then loosen the membrane with your
fingers and gently pull it off. Put the ribs
in a roasting pan and pour the brine on top.
Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Meanwhile, make the sauce: Heat the
vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium
heat. Add the garlic and grated ginger; cook
1 minute. Add the sherry, bring to a boil and
cook until slightly reduced, 1 to 2 minutes.
Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar, the
3 tablespoons mandarin juice, the remaining
mandarin peel (diced), the chicken broth,
vinegar and soy sauce and simmer until reduced
to about 1 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from
the heat and let cool. Set aside 1/4 cup sauce
for serving; use the rest for brushing. (The
sauce can be made up to 1 day in advance.)
Prepare a grill for indirect heat: For gas,
preheat to medium high, then turn off half
of the burners and turn the other burners to
medium low.
Remove the ribs from the brine and pat dry. Mix
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper and the cayenne in
a bowl and rub on the ribs. Put bone-side down
on the cooler part of the grill; cover and cook 1
hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Remove from
the grill, brush with 1/2 cup of the sauce, and
place in a 250 degree oven, cover and cook 1
more hour or until done. Brush with more sauce
during the last 10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting
board and slice into ribs. Serve with the reserved
sauce.
About Guy’s Grocery Games
Going to the grocery store
could be worth $20,000 for
one chef in each episode of this
competition series. Four chefs
compete in three elimination
challenges testing their culinary
skills as they make their way
through the store’s aisles. The
chef who makes it through all
three challenges then has two
minutes to go through the aisles
collecting items on a shopping
list. Each item on the list is
worth $2,000 and if the chef
gets every item, the $20,000
grand prize is awarded. Popular
LOCAL ARTIST’S GOURD CREATURES
BRING COMFORT
he day Jenn Norpchen found
an old gourd moldering in the
back of her sister’s barn, her
life was forever changed.
It’d been a hard few years for Norpchen.
Her husband passed away after living
with dementia, and she lost her job as
in architectural design for Chevron.
She was deeply sad, and she didn’t
know how to move forward.
That day in the barn, she looked at
what she had in her hands and instead
of seeing a hard-rinded inedible fruit,
she saw a quirky creature looking
back at her with wide, wondering
eyes.
Norpchen knew something about
sculpture, having taken classes in
college, so she signed up for a gourd
art class. The assignment was to make
a basic bird house, but Norpchen’s bird
house had the face of a cat, and the
entrance was the cat’s open mouth.
Her friends loved the cat birdhouse,
and several wanted one of their own,
so she began giving them away as gifts,
getting more creative with different
animals, adding feathers, beaks and
glass eyes.
She moved from the Bay Area to a
friend’s house in Granite Bay where
she realized that making the gourds
brought her so much joy she didn’t
want to go back to architectural design.
She began to peddle her creatures
at galleries and co-ops far and wide.
“I heard a lot of ‘no,’” she said.
But she heard a few yesses as well.
Locally, Norpchen’s gourds appear
in Auburn Old Town Gallery, High
Hand Gallery in Loomis, the Crocker
Art Museum and the Artery in Davis.
Further afield, Norpchen’s creatures
can be found in galleries in Colorado,
Photos courtesy Jenn Norpchen
WRITTEN BY: TRICIA CASPERS

Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.
Five years later, Norpchen has perfected
her creative process. She hunts for gourds
at her favorite farms and sands them while
wearing a respirator to protect her lungs.
She orders feathers from companies that
provide them for fishing lures, and she makes
the glass eyes herself and finds any sticks she
may need while out exploring nature.
She’s learned how to make the armature
out of iron posts, wire, and aluminum
mesh and how to blend the clay seamlessly
onto the body of the wee beastie.
“A gourd is like an organic canvas,” she
said. “There’s so much you can do with it
that you can’t do with anything else.”
She finds new animals by searching the
pages of “National Geographic.”
If Norpchen had to label her animals with
one emotion, she’d say they’re angry.
“They are very unhappy with humans,”
she said. “They’re saying, ‘Quit killing us.’”
But these creatures are also exasperated,
silly, colorful and unique. Their light
feathers lift in the slightest breeze, making
them appear wistful.
Her most popular animals to date have
been “Hormone Hen,” with a big pink
belly and wide, pink face, and a committee
of vultures titled, “Group Therapy.”
Her buyers tell her the animals are
reminiscent of Jim Henson’s puppets.
They send her photos of the sculptures
at home in their homes. They email her
and say they gave the sculpture to a friend
who’s dying of cancer or put it on the desk
to help them get through the day at work.
“It does bring me joy,” Norpchen said,
smiling. “It does.”
A GOURD IS LIKE AN
ORGANIC CANVAS,”
SHE SAID. “THERE’S
SO MUCH YOU CAN
DO WITH IT THAT
YOU CAN’T DO WITH
ANYTHING ELSE.”
BRINGING A PIECE OF NAPA TO AUBURN
itting on the back deck, I find
myself completely relaxed. The
sound of the rushing creek, the
cool breeze and the view of the grapes
seemed to take me out of the daily
stress of life. I thought the traffic noise
from the busy Luther Road would
interfere, but it did not.
The Vineyard Salon is striving to
offer their clients their vision of a
salon in Napa Valley. The owner,
Debi McRenolds-Cook, went so far
as to plant her very own grapes on the
property.
"I wanted to create a getaway for our
clients. I even went so far as to bring in
a Gift Shop that has jewelry, clothing,
hats, and candles. Busy moms and
professionals have little time to shop
it seemed like the perfect fit." explains
Debi
After five years of ownership and three
years working at the salon, it appears
to be taking off. They even were voted
Best of Auburn in several categories
"I hear it all the time. Your place has a
good vibe. I strive for my clients to feel
comfortable." says Debi
Debi fondly talks about her staff
and how experienced, talented and
educated they are.
"We inspire each other and often
collaborate on styles and new ideas.
We are friends more like family, that's
important to me," says Debi
Debi put countless hours into
researching her product line because
she wanted to have something
different in the marketplace. They
carry Euphora, Image Skin Line,
Farmhouse Fresh to just name a few of
her product lines.
Debi and her husband live in Auburn
and have six kids, and nine grandkids
and absolutely adore this community.
Many times she has let the community
use her space for fundraisers.
"If I see a need, I go out of my way to
help." says Debi
have ridden quite a bit in the last
month. I lost over ten pounds and
have rode over a 100 miles since
the last publication. Some riders do this
weekly, I typically ride that amount in a
year.
This month I rode three trails in
Auburn: Manzanita, Squirrel Trail and
Stagecoach.
Squirrel and Stagecoach are fun; nothing
compares to Manzanita. See map on
page 36.
26 TRAILS IN 6 MONTHS. ONLY 20 TO GO.
Manzanita has it all and has to be the
star for this month. Great drops, tight
turns, rocky sections and all out brakes
off sections where you pray the tires stay
on the ground and you make it through
without a crash.
Only 1.3 miles in length it still packs a
punch. Starting out it has a nice flow of
tight turns and hard packed dirt. Then
you get into some technical drops, turns
and then the rocks come. I love the
section with the bridge and dislike the
climb at the other end that I never make.
Above are all taken on Manzanita Trail in Auburn. Photos by Jeremy Burke
SUPPORT THE AUBURN BIKE PARK
Finally, my favorite is the end just when
you are about to exit there is a large rock
that you have to get over. After three
rides on this trail I finally made it up, and
that was worth the pain of climbing back
up stagecoach later that morning.
Overall a must ride when running
the canyon. I have been linking this
to Culvert and Confluence to make a
solid 11 miles that take me longer than
the average with a total elevation Gain
2,020 feet.
ired of going to Truckee to
work on your skills? Auburn is
so close to having its very own
Bike Park. All the steps have been made
except one last hearing.
There is momentum against the bike
park, and it is critical for you to show
strong support for this project.
Victory Velo and Auburn Bike
Company are organizing a bike ride to
the community. Bring your whole family.
The final public meeting to he held to
adopt the bike park will be at the Canyon
View Community Center. Show up and
show your support!!! For everyone who
is able, show up at the Overlook parking
area @ 4:30. We will roll out around 5
pm to make it to the meeting by 6 pm.
We will ride the canal through the
proposed site for the park and meet at
the Community Center for the Public
Meeting. We will have a place to park
the bikes and someone to watch them
while the meeting is in place. The more
people on bikes, the better!!!!
August 31st from 4:30 to 7:30. Riders
meet at 471 Maidu Dr. Auburn, CA.
There will be a secured location for your
bikes watched by one or both of the
bike shops. For more information visit
Welcome to the American River
The Auburn State Recreation Area Map is a collaborative effort
between PARC and the community of American River experts and
dedicated volunteers who are stewards of the Auburn SRA.
The Auburn State Recreation Area*, an
extraordinary recreational, historical and
scenic gem, is located in the Sierra Nevada
Foothills along 48 miles of the North and
Middle Forks of the American River
stretching from Auburn to Colfax and
Foresthill. The Auburn SRA provides high
quality open space, wildlife habitat and
diverse recreational opportunities deep in
California’s legendary Gold Country. The
American River’s rich cultural tapestry
includes influences from the Maidu
Nisenan Indians, Spanish settlers and Gold
Rush miners. The river was named Rio de
los Americanos by the Spanish. Today, the
pristine river and canyon trails offer
visitors a variety of recreational activities
to responsibly enjoy. Major recreational
uses include hiking, mountain biking,
horseback riding, whitewater boating,
fishing, swimming, gold panning,
picnicking, and much more.
Native American
River History
The acorn grinding rocks in the
Confluence area are visible reminders
of the many Maidu Nisenan Indian village sites
that flourished along the American River and the
canyon rim. The Maidu Nisenan fished for
salmon, hunted game, and gathered acorns. Both
edible and medicinal plants were collected as well.
Their rich seasonal calendar marked time with
“Big Time” dance ceremonies in the village
round house called the “k’um”. The Maidu
Interpretive Center, located in
Roseville (916-774-5934), provides
programs and exhibits that
illustrate the connection between
the people, their culture, and the
natural world.
Gold Rush River History
In 1848 the discovery of gold by James
Marshall at Sutter’s Mill on the
South Fork in Coloma, spread a
Gold Rush to the North and Middle
Forks. The “world rushed in” to pan
and dig the precious metal from the
river and canyons. Both the North and
Middle Forks were intensively mined,
and sizeable towns and camps grew up within the
canyons and along the rivers to support the
mining operations. Today, the supply roads and
trails the miners used are the nucleus of the
recreational trail system in the Auburn State
Recreation Area. The Gold Rush Mining
Museum is located in the historic Auburn Depot,
(see Local Museums) and offers a glimpse into
Placer County’s Gold Rush history.
Mountain Quarries
Railroad Bridge
The Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, also
known locally as “No Hands Bridge,” is the most
recognizable historical monument in the Confluence
area. The Pacific Portland Cement Company
completed the 170 foot long, triple-arch span
concrete bridge in 1912. At that time it was the
longest concrete arch railroad bridge in the world.
The bridge and connecting rail line were built to
haul limestone from the Portland Cement Quarry,
located a mile up river on the Middle Fork, to the
Southern Pacific main line in Auburn. In 2004
the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge was
added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2014, the bridge was designated
California Historic Landmark #1051.
AUBURN DOWNTOWN CO-OP
Celebrates Small Town Life with Urban Flare
magine an outdoor venue
where you could grab a cold
beer and a hot dog or a glass of
wine and a taco and groove to local
rhythms in the warm sunshine.
Meanwhile, your kids might
sample ice cream from a nearby
farm or shave ice from a tiki hut,
make a butterfly wand or watch the
skateboarders ollie and kickflip.
Together you might peruse the
jewelry and pottery created by
Auburn artisans or find out more
about the services Auburn businesses
and nonprofits have to offer.
In fact, close to 1,500 people don’t
have to imagine that place because
they experienced it for themselves
on a recent Thursday evening in
downtown Auburn.
If you missed the inaugural Auburn
Downtown CO-OP, that’s all right
because it’s happening again the
third Thursday of every month
through October.
The seed of the idea for the event
was planted by Deb Arbogast, owner
of Stella + Parker Revival. Arbogast
mentioned to Mora Rowe, Auburn’s
director of economic development,
that she’d like to have a small event
in her store to feature Tysa, a Malibu
clothing designer.
Together, Rowe and Arbogast took
that seed outside and grew it into a
lush and diverse street festival that
appealed to every generation of
Auburnite.
“It was so much more than we
dreamed it would be,” Arbogast
said. “There was something there for
everyone.”
The collaborators were thrilled by
the response of business owners,
artists, farmers and musicians who
agreed to not only show up for
the event, but also, in some cases,
partner together.
“It evolved really naturally and
organically,” Rowe said. “Everybody
said yes.”
Rowe kept this event fairly small
so that vendors weren’t competing
with one another in case the turnout
was low.
She needn’t have worried.
“At 8 p.m., there was a sea of people
out there,” Arbogast said.
Jaci Lambert was one of them.
She chatted happily with friends
while her son watched the
skateboarding demonstration.
“We like to support Auburn,” she
said. “We attend every fun event
there is.”
One of the skaters Lambert’s son
watched with awe was Carlos Ortiz,
a member of the Milo Snow and
Skate team.
Ortiz, who’s been skateboarding for
20 years, was pleased to be invited
to the event.
“We’re stoked to be out here
representing the community,”
he said. “Skateboarding is such
a positive activity, and it appeals
to everybody: Young, old and inbetween.”
But if skateboarding didn’t appeal
to attendees, senior library assistant
Michael McCurdy offered them
something completely different:
Books . . . and DVDs and magazines.
McCurdy welcomed passersby
to take a look inside the Placer
County Bookmobile. With 19
stops throughout the county, the
Bookmobile is usually too busy to
attend events, so it was a special
treat to be able to open its doors
in Auburn , McCurdy said.
“It is a little-known but wellused
staple of our communities,”
he said.
Outside the Bookmobile and up
the street, the Manzanita Band
sang “Heart of Gold” while
children petted dogs, and friends
tasted small batch kombucha.
Later that evening DJ King
Royale would turn the street into
a dance party for all ages.
Rowe’s idea, and it’s one she
hopes to grow, was to bring in a
variety of experiences like those
available in an urban setting.
“If you’re walking through
Central Park, you might find
an Asian dance troupe in one
corner and a Puerto Rican
band in another corner,” she
said. “Some of us long for those
experiences.”
For the August CO-OP, Rowe
will bring in a new variety
of sights, sounds and scents,
create a new scene, all while
celebrating historic and
authentic Auburn.
Lynn Larick of Newcastle is so
far happy with the result. She
and her friends enjoyed dinner
from Nixtaco while swaying to
the twang of a nearby guitar.
“This is the beauty of a small
town, isn’t it?” she said.
anting, Gasping, Burning
this is me climbing a hill on
my mountain bike. Riding
with others, I often hold them back
waiting for me to finish my grueling
task. Then I reach the top begging for a
break, alas they are already rested, and
I hate to make them wait.
I love to mountain bike, to go down
hill as fast as I can. There is something
about the speed and focus needed to
go as fast as possible through boulders,
berms, jumps, rocks, roots, ruts and
anything else the trail throws at you.
Is there a solution to my climbing
dilemma?
It seems that there is. E-bikes are
showing a phenomenal growth. Are
they for me?
BRINGING THE E-BIKE TO AUBURN
That is not something that I can
answer in this story, but for many, this
is just the ticket. Owners Duke and
Christina Jay are carving out a market
for their bike shop here in Auburn.
A-town bikes in Downtown Auburn
seems to found its niche the E-Bike.
They carry over five brands and right
now are having more of a problem
with supply, from some brands, than
anything as the leaders in the e-bike
industry are overseas.
“We have been selling e-bikes for over
five years. We wanted to do something
different,” says Duke
They are seeing steady increases
in sales since they started selling
them five years ago. Injuries can be a
common reason to purchase an e-bike
but just as common is opening up the
accessibility to riding trails that were
once out of reach due to fitness.
“Our typical client for an e-bike is hard
to pin down. There are no specific
clients that are purchasing e-bikes, our
friend’s son is younger and bought a
kit to turn his bike into an e-bike for
commuting to college.” Says Christina
The Bulls brand e-bike seems to be a
good seller right now for A-town Bikes.
It’s a nimble long travel mountain bike
that has an Enduro/All Mountain style
that is very popular right now.
One thing I know is that you have to
try one of these out to appreciate what
this machine can do.
Above: Owners Duke and Christina pause for a photo with their only employee. Below: Duke shows off how he can keep up with the
youngsters in a shop ride. Photos by Jeremy Burke

Bulls Technology
Bosch Motor and Battery
THE GROWTH OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE — LED BY THE BICYCLE
2x Drivetrain
Skidplates
Electric bicycles continue to be the
highest selling electric vehicle on the
planet with an estimated 35M units
sold in 2015 accounting for 62% of all
e-mobility device revenue.
The e-bike industry is driven by high
urbanization rates, improving battery
technology and bicycling infrastructure,
aggressive city energy policy, lower
cost, and higher-performing product
offerings.
With consumers and municipalities
around the globe increasingly searching
for new products that will enable
improved mobility in and around cities
e-mobility devices are one of the top
growing segments.
Revenue generated by global e-mobility
devices (lead by e-bikes) is expected
to more than double from 2016 to
2025, growing from a $25.6 billion
market in 2016 to $62.2 billion by
2025. E-mobility device revenue is
expected to grow at a strong compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.3%
throughout the forecast period.
The GeoOrbital wheel addresses a much
larger market than what is available to
standard electric bicycle manufacturers.
As our market not only includes people,
who might want to buy a new electric
bike, but also current owners of over
1 Billion already made bicycles who
might want to turn them into affordable
electric vehicles.
GOLD COUNTRY FAIR HAS IT’S OWN BEER THIS YEAR
Nevada City Brewery Ol’Republic to release a special brew for this years fair
The moment they started in
2011 this Nevada City Brewery
has seen growth beyond their
expectations. I had a chance to sit with
Jim Harte and Simon Olney over a pint
of their current best selling brew, Clouds
of Jupiter.
“I remember our first conference in
2011 at Sierra Nevada Brewery, I
was in awe over the cathedral
of stainless steel. It
was intimidating to
walk into that room,
yet everyone was
extremely welcoming
and inspirational.”
explains Jim.
Don Ales, CEO of the Gold
Country Fairgrounds, reached
out to all our regional breweries when
Ol’Republic jumped at the chance to
brew something special for this year’s fair.
“I have been humbled by the level of
commitment from Ol’Republic. Their
passion for their beers and the attention
to detail they are taking to make a beer
that is truly unique for this year’s fair.
Simon the owner even took this a step
further and designed a stunning logo
for our event. Thank Yous are just not
enough.” Don Ales CEO Gold Country
Fairgrounds.
Jim and Simon
came up with the
name Pale Dorado;
this is derived from
the use of their main hops
which are El Dorado
Hops. Jim did not want to
commit to a flavor profile
for the beer he alluded to
Modern Pal Ale with an
alcohol content of around 6%.
“This brew is going to be something
special.” says Jim
Ol’Republic Brewery is located in
Nevada City in the Seven Hills District.
They are an award winning brewery
that includes a few best in shows at
the California State Fair competition
which is the third largest brew contest in
America.
CROOKED LANE TAKES RUNNER-UP
Auburn’s newest brewery racking up the awards
ew brewery
Crooked Lane has
not even turned
one and has over 25 awards
under its belt. Owners, Paul
Schilling, Kirt Braun, Adrian
and Teresa Psuty, of this
FROM HOBBY TO FAMILY BUSINESS
he Naggiar Vineyard solely
served as a supplier of grapes
to regional winemakers for
many years, but it wasn’t until new
additions joined the family team effort
that the Naggiar label was finally
born. Tony Tibshirani, Mike’s nephew,
relocated from Montreal, Canada with
his family in 2001. Shawn Naggiar,
Mike and Diane’s only son, and his
family came soon after. The two
families built houses just steps from
the vineyards and swiftly suggested the
addition of a winemaker and a tasting
room. Shawn’s wife, Mary, became the
Tasting Room Manager and she is still
at that post today. Winemaker Derek
Irwin helped the Naggiar family craft
their very first wines in 2003. Once the
tasting room was in full swing, a bistro
followed soon after to complete the
guest experience.
“These things, they have a life of their
own,” Mike chuckles. He insists that
he and Diane never had a vision of
making wine. “We always enjoyed
growing grapes, and we’re good at
that,” Mike says. But making wine and
educating others about the process
quickly became a new and unforeseen
passion for the Naggiars.
By 2009, the tasting room became
fully operational and winery tours
began soon after. Electric shuttles
now usher wine lovers on eco tours
around the grounds, sharing the
love and labor of winemaking.
These tours take guests through the
process, from the growing of the best
grapes the foothills can produce to
the perfect pairings for the varietal
wines these foothills grapes make.
“People seem more interested when
they learn about the wine they’re
drinking,” Mike says. “We grow our
own grapes and we do so because
controlling the conditions of the grapes
as they grow is what makes quality
wine. So we love teaching our guests
about our approach to winemaking.”
Naggiar Vineyard has continued
to sell grapes to winemakers, but
now the Naggiar brand is in local
restaurants from Grass Valley to
Sacramento. Summertime at Naggiar
Vineyards means good music, food and
wine at the estate. Visitors can expect
to see live local music on weekends
and enjoy delectable small plates
and desserts from the Naggiar bistro.
THESE THINGS, THEY HAVE A
LIFE OF THEIR OWN,” MIKE
CHUCKLES. HE INSISTS THAT
HE AND DIANE NEVER HAD
A VISION OF MAKING WINE.
“WE ALWAYS ENJOYED
GROWING GRAPES, AND
WE’RE GOOD AT THAT,”
ECOLOGICAL, AND ECONOMICAL WAY TO GO GREEN
I ENJOY THE
EXCITEMENT WHEN
PEOPLE SEE AND
FEEL THE RESULT OF
TINTED WINDOWS.
BY FEEL I MEAN
YOUR HOME STAYS
SO MUCH COOLER.”
~ STEVE HANSEN
ocal family owned business
Efficient Tint tailor their
business to suit the needs of
your home.
For twenty years Steve and Carissa
Hansen have been in the window
tinting business. Cutting their teeth
in their parents’ business, located
in Santa Cruz, was the perfect place
to prove that their techniques are a
winning combination.
“I enjoy the excitement when people
see and feel the result of tinted
windows. By feel I mean your home
stays so much cooler.” says Steve
I have to say that I was skeptical on
the excitement part, so I showed
up, at their clients install off of Mt.
Vernon Road here in Auburn.
I was fascinated by the process and the
result.
Watching Steve install was
interesting, and he showed me the
difference between a great install and
a poor one.
The windows have to be cleaned
several times. During this process
sometimes bubbles get trapped
between the frame and the window. I
was watching the whole time and saw
no bubbles.
Sure enough on the second window,
Steve says.
“See this; these micro bubbles will
cause the film to separate from the
window. That’s bad,” explains Steve
Then he jumps into the process of

getting the bubbles out.
He peels back the film and
quickly cleans the backside
of the film. He then repeated
this about six times before
the film is bubble free.
“Most installers would just
move on. Most home owners
would never even see this.
Over time, years even, this
would separate and that is
just not ok with me.”
This attention to detail
permeates through the
Hansen’s business and seems
to be the reason they are
growing so fast. Right now
to control quality Steve does
all the installs.
“If I found the right person
and we continue to grow at
this pace I might consider
hiring another installer.
As of now, we are happy
to have high quality and
top customer satisfaction,”
explains Steve.
I stayed for the completion
of the large picture window
over looking a stunning
vineyard. I was shocked
at the difference. It quite
literally changed the way I
saw the world.
Every color popped. Blues
deep and so clear. The greens
of the leaves vibrant and
bright. What surprised me
the most was the contrasts
that showed up. The clouds
looked like almost fake like
a photographer extracted all
the contrast that they could
and at the same time over
exposed the whites.
BEFORE
Above: These photos were taken at the exact same camera setting and with no processing. Still although the
difference is dramatic it looks even better in person. This film was chosen by the customer because it blocks 75%
of the incoming heat and 99.9% of the UV rays. Photos by Jeremy Burke
“There is something for everyone. Solar
Screens have a 3-5% light transmission
and looking out of tiny holes makes for
poor visibility. They also have to be custom
made to size and take some time to produce.
Finally, they are permanently screwed into
the side of your home, so the aesthetics of
your home are altered.” explains Steve
“Kathy is professional, knowledgeable of the area and
knew what improvements I should make to earn the
highest return. She spent a lot of time researching
my listing and not only sold it in creditable time, she
sold it for more than I believed we could get. She did
a great job!” ~Tom A.
“My former agent told me I should not use my VA Loan
because sellers would not accept my offer. Boy, did I
waste a ton of time with that guy. Kathy stepped in and
we got the house we always dreamed of, with NO money
down! In fact, we got another credit from Kathy that
completely covered our closing costs - we really bought
