President’s Independence Day Address:
‘Don’t let contentious issues distract us’
New Delhi : Stating that
India is at a “pivotal
moment”, President Ram
Nath Kovind said on
Tuesday that “contentious
issues and extraneous
debates” should not be
allowed to “distract us”. In
his televised address to the
nation on the eve of
Independence Day, Kovind
recalled Mahatma Gandhi‟s
“most noble mantra” on the
“power of ahinsa” (nonviolence)
being “far greater
than the power of
hinsa” (violence). “The
power to stay your hand is
far greater than the power to
strike with your hand and
hinsa has no place in
society,” he said.
“We are at a juncture in our
history that is very different
from any period we have so
far experienced. We are at
the cusp of achieving many
of our long-awaited goals.
Un i ver sa l a ccess t o
electricity, the elimination of
open defecation, the
elimination of homelessness,
the very elimination of
extreme poverty is achievable
and attainable. We are
at a pivotal moment. Let
contentious issues and
extraneous debates not
distract us,” said Kovind.
“Women have a special role
in our society. The
expansion of freedom
in our country in many
senses amounts to the
expansion of freedom for
women in our country.
This is true whether we
see them as mothers,
sisters, daughters or
simply as women who are
entitled to a life of their
choosing – and deserving
of the opportunity and the
security to fulfil their
potential. They could
do this as sheet-anchors
of our families or as
absolutely critical entrants
to our institutions of
higher learning and our
workforce. The choice is
theirs; as a nation and as a
society we must ensure
that they have the right
and the ability to exercise
that choice,” he said
The President said that
every Indian “who does
his or her job with
sincerity and commitment,
who contributes to society
by being true to a
professional ethic” is
“upholding the values of
freedom”. “Every citizen
of India who does his or
her duty sincerely, fulfils a
personal and professional
obligation and keeps to a
Atal Bihari Vajpayee: India has lost
its ‘anmol ratna’, says PM Modi
given word is, at a
fundamental level, upholding
the principles of
our freedom struggle. I
would argue that every
Indian who does not jump
the queue and respects the
civic space and rights of
those ahead in the line
also lives up to the
principles of our freedom
struggle. It‟s a very small
gesture. Let us try and
abide by it,” he said.
He said farmers, armed
forces and paramilitary
forces all uphold the spirit
of the freedom struggle.
In another reference to
Gandhi, Kovind spoke on
his “concept of swadeshi”.
“Gandhiji spoke of
swadeshi with an uncommon
zeal. To him this was
a pride in promoting
Indian creativity and an
I n di a n s e n s i bi l i t y.
Nevertheless, he was alive
to intellectual currents
from the rest of the world.
He invited these to enrich
our learning. To him,
Indian civilisation was
defined by open windows
and not closed doors. This
was his concept of
swadeshi and it is still
relevant to us as we
engage with the world –
whether for our economy,
our health, education and
social aspirations, or our
policy choices,” he said.
Independence Day 2018: India to be engine of world
growth for three decades, PM Narendra Modi
New Delhi : Prime
M i n i s t e r N a r e n dr a
Modi Wednesday said
India will be the engine of
growth for the world
economy for the next
three decades as the
“sleeping elephant” has
started to run on the back
of structural reforms like
GST.
Addressing the nation
from the ramparts of the
Red Fort on the occasion
of 72nd Independence
Day, he listed out the pace
of reforms in the last four
years of his government
that pulled out the country
from being considered a
“fragile and risky” economy
to being the fastest in
the world.
Prior to 2014, India was
likened to policy paralysis
and delayed reforms.
“India was considered
among „fragile five‟ but
today the world is seeing
it as a destination of
multi-billion dollar investment.
The narrative has
changed,” he said.
The government‟s motto,
he said, is reform, perform
and transform. Red tape
has been replaced with
„red carpet‟, propelling
India on the ease of doing
business ranking, he said.
Bottlenecks were a topic
of discussions among international
institutions and
experts prior to 2014 but
“today they are saying the
sleeping elephant has
woken up and has started
running”.
The comment was an
apparent reference to
International Monetary
Fund‟s commentary on
India last week in which it
said the country is on
track to hold its position
as one of the world‟s
fastest-growing economies
as reforms start to pay off.
Stating that India is now
the sixth largest economy
in the world, Modi said
international institutions
are saying that “India will
give strength to the world
economy for the next
three decades. India will
be the engine of growth”.
“We have the potential to
take tough decisions. We
are not partisan,” he said.
“Prior to 2014, global
institutions used to say the
Indian economy is risky.
T o d a y t h e s a m e
institutions and people
are saying that reform
momentum is giving
strength to fundamentals,”
the PM said. He went on
to list structural reforms
like Goods and Services
Tax (GST), bankruptcy
and insolvency law and
benami property law that
helped transform the
economy.
Electrifying all villages,
providing 5 crore cleaner
cooking gas to poor
women, doubling the pace
of highway construction,
r e c o r d f o o d g r a i n
production, record mobile
phone manufacturing, and
building four-time more
new houses in villages
were some of the achievements
of his government,
he said. If the work continued
at the pace that was
prevalent in 2013, it
would have taken one or
two more decades to
electrify all villages, 100
years to provide LPG gas
connections to all and
generations to take optical
fiber to villages. Modi
said the government
fulfilled the promise to
provide 50 per cent more
than the cost of production
for Kharif crops to
farmers and is on the way
to achieve the target of
doubling farm income by
2022.
New Delhi : Former
PM A t a l B i h a r i
Vajpayee dead: Former
prime minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee and BJP stalwart
passed away at the All India
Institute of Medi cal
Sciences in the national
capital on Thursday. He was
93. The premier institute,
where a stream of leaders
across party lines visited
Vajpayee since morning,
announced his death at 5:05
pm. The iconic BJP leader
was admitted to the AIIMS
in June and had been ailing
for long.
He retreated from active
public life over the last
decade following the
deterioration of his health
and remained restricted
to his residence. A host
of leaders including Prime
M i n i s t e r N a r e n dr a
Modi visited the BJP
patriarch at AIIMS.
Vajpayee was awarded
India‟s highest civilian
award, the Bharat Ratna,
in March 2015. During his
second term as prime
minister,Vajpayee ordered
nuclear tests in May 1998
in a strategic masterstroke
to blunt Pakistan‟s nuclear
ambitions. He followed
this up with peaceovertures
to Pakistan, riding on
the first direct bus from
India to Pakistan in
February 1999.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee : A
brilliant parliamentarian
If one word could best describe a man, then for Atal Bihari
Vajpayee that would have to be compromise. Ever the
contrarian, Vajpayee was equally the consensus-seeker and
the alliance-builder who could traverse ideological divides
and overcome political animosities with a skill set that
was a throwback to the Nehruvian era. A brilliant
parliamentarian and a shrewd politician who could demolish
political opponents with his acerbic wit, Vajpayee was also
the elder statesman who was never afraid to reach out and
make peace with India‟s neighbours. Without a doubt, he was
born of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the torchbearer of
Hindutva. But his rise in the Jana Sangh was at a time when it
was not on the ascendant, and this meant he always tried to
outgrow his organisation. Vajpayee spent a lifetime
trying to make his party displace the Congress from power,
and to this end he switched
between fighting the
Congress‟s tactics and mimicking them. If the Jana Sangh
came to power as part of the Janata Party in 1977, it was in no
small measure due to his readiness to mend fences and build
bridges with former political opponents. Indeed, he became
the acceptable public face of a party propelled by divisive
forces. Whether he was a mere frontman, a „mask‟ as one of
his party colleagues described him, or a driver of change in
an organisation with deep-seated prejudices, is difficult to tell;
the truth lay somewhere in between.
Vajpayee‟s first hold on power was a stint as External Affairs
Minister in the Janata government in 1977-79, where he made
a bold effort to normalise relations with China. Subsequently,
he had three stints as Prime Minister, a 13-day misadventure
without the required support in 1996, a 13-month experiment
with strange bedfellows in 1998-99, and a full
term with a reasonably cohesive alliance during 1999-2004.
The National Democratic Alliance that the BJP formed in
1998 would not have been possible without Vajpayee as
the leader. His image as a moderate trying to rein in extremist
elements in his party made it easier for others such as the
Telugu Desam, the Trinamool Congress and the Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam to join the NDA. The BJP would not
have come within sniffing distance of power without him, but
he brought the party to power by keeping its most contentious
issues, Ayodhya, Article 370, uniform civil code, out. It is a
matter of debate whether Pokhran-II was a strategic mistake,
an unnecessary concession to a hyper-nationalistic
constituency, but there is no denying the remarkable maturity
he displayed during the Kargil crisis in 1999. But the
compromise man could not win a second substantive term.
Forced as he was to carry on a delicate balancing act, he often
came across as an indecisive and cautious Prime Minister,
even if at times an endearing and loveable one. There was no
way to judge whether he softened the BJP or the BJP toughened
him. Perhaps it was a bit of both.
Our martyrs -our pride. Let us bow
to them on this Independence Day.
Freedom is not achieved without sacrificing the blood. If these great
fighters had not given their lives, we would not have seen
today‟s independent India. Let us remember the martyrdom of
shahid Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru who embraced death
with smiling faces and left a great motivation for millions of Indians
that is inspiring us for generations now.
The Indian freedom struggle is incomplete without the mention of the
greats like Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat
Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev who choose to take the weapons to fight
the British. Their ideology was different than that of Mahatma Gandhi.
However the objective was the same – Complete Independence of
India.
These fighters have left in impact in the
history of Indian freedom struggle that it is
incomplete without the mention of their
names. Let us remember them and their
work this 15th August while we are
celebrating the Independence Day of
India.
Let's salute the martyrs for the
sacrifices they made and thank them for
giving us our today.
abuse case; departmental inquiry ordered
The Deoria incident came
to light after a girl escaped
from the shelter home and
informed the police how
they were all treated like
servants. The Deoria Police
also arrested a man
Reacting to the case, Uttar
Welfare Minister Rita
Bahuguna Joshi had said
an inspection by the CBI
is 2017 had established
that the shelter home in
Deoria was running illegally.
She added that despite
an order being issued
for the closure of the shelter
home and shifting of
the inmates, the order was
not followed.
The exact motive behind
the crime was not
immediately clear, police
said adding they suspected
the victims' opposition to
cow slaughter could be
one reason.
"People were generally
complaining that the area
where the murders took
place was witnessing
cases of cow slaughter and
the victims were opposing
it. That could be a
possible motive behind the
Alvida Atal: Political entities
bid emotional goodbye to
former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Political parties on Thursday mourned the demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,
as he passed away at AIIMS this evening after a prolonged illness. Leaders described
him as a visionary statesman with acceptability across a diverse ideological spectrum.
India‟s most respected leaders who led the nation through several crises and held together a
tenuous coalition with his inclusive politics was bid an emotional goodbye by several political
entities.
President Ram Nath Kovind
Extremely sad to hear of the passing of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, our former PM and a true
Indian statesman. His leadership, foresight, maturity and eloquence put him in a league of his
own. Atal ji, the Gentle Giant, will be missed by one and all.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh
This is a very sad moment for us that Atal ji is no more. Shortly his mortal remains will be
taken to his residence where people can pay tribute to him.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu
Never expected end will come so soon. He was a true Indian. He never hesitated to speak from
his heart. He was the tallest leader in India post-independence. Vajpayee ji is 'ajatshatru' of
modern times because he always maintained dignity and decorum.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan
Atal ji was like a star in the sky of politics, which shone brighter than everyone else. He had the
unique ability to bring everyone together. Even if you ask the opposition they hold a sense of
respect for him.
BJP leader LK Advani
I am at a loss of words to express my deep grief and sadness today as we all mourn the passing
away of one of India‟s tallest statesmen, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. To me, Atal ji was more than a
senior colleague- in fact he was my closest friend for over 65 years.
Former PM Manmohan Singh
I have learnt with profound sorrow about the sad demise of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee
ji. An excellent orator, an impressive poet, an exceptional public servant, an outstanding Parliamentarian
and a great Prime Minister.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee
Though he was suffering for a long time I did not believe that the end will come. Fate snatched
him away from us. He carried conviction with everybody. No doubt that the country will be
poorer in the loss of Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was like a colossus for almost 6 decades. I pay
my deepest regards for this great son of India.
Former Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an eminent statesman known for his wisdom moderation intact. His
way of communication was unique and made him extremely popular. This kind of a person
comes once in a blue moon. He will be remembered for a long time.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi
Today India lost a great son. Former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, was loved and respected by
millions. My condolences to his family and all his admirers. We will miss him.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath
He worked in the national interest rather than personal interest, he brought a political stability
to our country. His ashes will be spread in every river in UP to respect his grand stature.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti
The demise of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is not only a loss for the country, it is big loss for the people
of Jammu and Kashmir. He was the first Prime Minister to understand the agony of our
people.
Mulayam Singh Yadav
It is a big loss for the country, he was a very simple man inspite of being such a senior leader.
There was not even a shred of arrogance in him. Current leaders need to learn a lot from him.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh
We grew up listening to him, learning from him, inspired by him. There was no electronic media
those days, but many of our college-mates, who did not subscribe to our ideology, would
come over to his rallies, just to pick up speaking skills from his oratory.
Union Minister Harsh Vardhan
A visionary statesman, with political sagacity, his acceptability across diverse ideological spectrum
endeared him to all.
Union Minister VK Singh
India has lost one of her most beloved sons, a statesman, and unarguably one of the best PMs to
have led the country. Rest In Peace Atal ji, we will miss you.
Congress MP Milind Deora
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a poet and statesman who put country before party. In the spirit of
bipartisanship, he worked closely with my late father Murlibhai to strengthen Indo-US ties and
liberalise India's insurance sector. My condolences to Gunu didi, Ranjan, his family and supporter.
Ram Vilas Paswan
He was a great politician, intense speaker, a true diplomat, having clarity in thinking, warrior of
social justice and a great nationalist.
Union Minister Suresh Prabhu
Atal ji struggled all his life to uphold the ideals so dear to him, it culminated in his becoming
PM in 1996, period of 1998-2004 when he held the position again, will be always remembered
Good Governance. Fought with ailments, last few years, today fight ends. We always will miss
you.
Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma
It is a great loss to the country. It was a joy to listen to Atal ji, he cut across ideology, he was a
person who had compassion and his belief to take India together is to be remembered. India has
become poor in his loss. He has left a deep imprint.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
He may be not with us physically, but his vision will always be with us, losing a person whom
we always looked up to is a personal loss for all of us and I am sure we will always take inspiration
from his ideology.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik
I am deeply grieved by the sad demise of former PM, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was one of
the tallest leaders of the country. He was much loved by the people of India and more so by the
people of Odisha. May his soul rest in peace.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan
He was an inspiration and support. It's an end of an era of Indian politics. He wasn't among
those to lose battle. He was a fighter. He was a great politician and loved by millions. It's unimaginable
to think that our beloved Atal Ji is no more with us. This is an end of a political era,
the void of his absence can never be filled.
Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari
I just pray the almighty to receive his soul and give strength to his followers and well-wishers
to bear the loss.
Former prime minister
Atal Bihari Vajpayee,
admitted to New Delhi‟s
All India Institute of
M e d i c a l S c i e n c es
(AIIMS) on June 11 with
kidney and urinary
infection and chest
congestion, passed away
on Thursday. He was 93.
Often described as the
moderate face of the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP), Vajpayee served
as the country‟s prime
minister for 13 days in
1996, 13 months in 1998,
and a little under five
years from 1999. He was
India's first non-Congress
prime minister to last a
full five-year term.
Vajpayee began his
political career as a
freedom fighter, with his
first brush with politics
as part of the Quit India
movement of 1942. As a
student, Vajpayee had
briefly been inclined toward
communism. But it
was the ideology of the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh (RSS) that
appealed to him more.
Later, influenced by
Syama Prasad Mookerjee,
Vajpayee in 1951
joined the Bharatiya Jana
Sangh. An orator par excellence,
he was lauded
as a statesman politician
who would go far beyond
his party‟s core political
agenda for the larger
good.
His journey in electoral
politics began in 1957,
when he contested the
Lok Sabha elections
from three seats and was
elected from Uttar
Pradesh‟s Balrampur
Here's a timeline of his
Vajpayee's future as
India's PM
Having contested the
Lok Sabha polls on
three seats, Vajpayee
lost to Raja Mahendra
Pratap in Mathura, and
also in Lucknow. But
he was elected to the
Lok Sabha from UP‟s
Balrampur. Vajpayee
took oath as a member
of Parliament that year
and impressed Jawaharlal
Nehru with his
excellent oratory skills.
Nehru predicted that
became the Minister
of External Affairs
in Prime Minister
Morarji Desai‟s government.
As foreign
minister, Vajpayee that
year became the
first person to deliver
speech at the United Nations
General Assembly
in Hindi.
1980: Birth of the BJP
Vajpayee, along with
Lal Krishna Advani and
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat
founded the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) in 1980 and was
appointed its first president.
1984-1989: The downfall
of BJP and Vajpayee
In the 1984 elections,
following the assassination
of the then PM Indira
Gandhi, BJP won
only two seats in the
545- me mb er L o k
Sabha. This defeat hit
Vajpayee particularly
hard; he himself lost the
p o l l s f r o m h i s
birthplace Gwalior. He
worked tirelessly to
build the party and in
the next parliamentary
elections, in 1989, the
BJP won 88 seats.
1991: BJP’s emerg
ence as mai n
Opposition party
By 1991, the BJP
had emerged as the
principal Opposition
party, having won 120
seats in the 1991 parliamentary
elections.1992,
1994: A shining light
in the middle of chaos
Atal Bihari Vajpayee
was conferred
with the Padma Vibhushan
for his contribution
to the country in
1992. That year, when
Hindu mobs razed the
Babri mosque, his was a
lone voice among
Hindu nationalists that
didn't sound happy. He
called the incident the
'worst miscalculation'.
In 1994, he was
awarded as the best
Parliamentarian.
1996: The first prime
ministership
Vajpayee's first stint as
the prime minister in
1996 lasted only 13
days, from May 16 to
28. In his reply to
Parliament during the
no-confidence motion,
V a j p a y e e s a i d ,
"Political parties will
come and go, but India's
democracy must live
on".1998: Realising the
nuclear dream, and
the Delhi-Lahore bus
service
On May 11, 1998, the
world was caught
unawares when India
did its first official
nuclear tests in Rajasthan's
Pokhran. The
underground tests not
only demonstrated the
country's scientific capacity
but also reflected
the courage of Vajpayee's
leadership.
In the same year, he
launched the Sada-e-
Sarhad, a bus service
between New Delhi in
India and Lahore in
Pakistan, and symbolic
of peace initiatives that
he wanted to pursue
with the neighbouring
country. The service
was, however, suspended
after the 2001
terror attack on the Indian
parliament that
nearly led to war between
India and Pakistan.
His second term as
PM ran for 13 months,
from March 19, 1998.
1999: The Kargil war,
and third term as PM
The Atal Bihari Vaj
p a y e e -
led National Democrati
c Alliance (NDA) was
in power at the Centre
during the time the Kargil
War was fought.
India's victory bolstered
Vajpayee‟s image, and
he was praised for
supporting the armed
forces and clearly articulating
India‟s stand
at the world stage. After
the war, he was elected
the prime minister for a
third time. This term
would make Vajpayee
I n d i a ' s f i r s t
non-Congress prime
minister to last a full
five-year term.
in 2002. He,
however, defended
2005: Vajpayee hangs
When he failed to return
to power after the 2004
general elections,
though he was given to
believe he would, it
practically marked the
end of his long and
eventful political career.
A year later, he left
active politics.
In 2015, Vajpayee was
conferred the Bharat
civilian award.

Mumbai: A stalwart, a
poet, a writer, an
enlightened mind and a
compassionate being
leaves this world -- that's
how megastar Amitabh
Bachchan began his
tribute to former Prime
Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee, whose demise
has left the nation
mourning.
Vajpayee died on Thursday
at AIIMS Hospital in
New Delhi after weeks of
being hospitalised. He was
93.
"He was an admirer of my
father and his works and
there were many an
occasion when I would be
present at their meetings,"
Amitabh, son of late
prolific and celebrated
writer Harivansh Rai
Bachchan, wrote on his
blog.
He said his father knew
Vajpayee, who was then a
student. Harivansh Rai, he
says, was very impressed
by Vajpayee's oratory
skills, which was his
virtue.
"His oratory powers were
Devastated by former
Prime Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee's death, Asia's
n i g h t i n g a l e L a t a
Mangeshkar who shared a
very close bonding with
him, said: "He was like
my father. He called me
Beti. I called him Dadda. I
feel I've lost my father all
over again.
"When I saw the glow on
his face, his persuasive
oratorical powers and his
love for the arts, I was
always reminded of my
father (the legendary
musician-stage actor
P a n d i t D i n a n a t h
Mangeshkar). When I was
a child many national
leaders and politicians
would visit my
home. Vir Savarkar was
one of them. Atalji
reminded me of Vir
Savarkar. He was a noble
soul . No words of praise
can do justice to him.
Atalji was never short of
words. But I am."
Lataji gets pensive about
her association with
Atalaji. "He was very
close to me, and I to him.
When we Mangeshkars
inaugurated a hospital in
Pune in my name, I asked
At a l ji t o do th e
inauguration. He happily
agreed and gave a rousing
speech -- as usual -- where
he said he was in a
dilemma as he thought
naming a hospital after me
was not right. There
should be a music
academy named after Lata
Mangeshkar, not a
hospital. Now what do I
say? That people should
fall sick so that this hospital
named after my Beti
would run?' His speeches
were works of art. There
is not one orator in Indian
politics, or for that matter
in India, to match Atalji."
In 2014 Lataji had the rare
privilege of doing an entire
album of song devoted
to Atalji's poems.
R e c a l l i n g t h e
"unforgettable" experience,
Lataji says: "I still
remember the album was
officially released in his
home in Delhi. We had
flown down for the
occasion. All the poems in
the album we entitled
' A n t a r n a a d ' w e r e
handpicked by me and my
composer Mayuresh Pai.
We then flew to Delhi to
get his approval. When
Atalji saw the poems we
u n m a t c h e d
and the usage
of words
e x em plar y.
They were
filled with the
power of pron
un ci at i on .
The rendition
of the word
was enough
to give it
m e a n i n g . . .
One did not
n e e d t o
un d er s t a n d
the language, that was his
brilliance. Some of his
public speeches and ones
done in the Houses of
Parliament are testimony''.
"A poet, a writer, a
politician, a Prime
Minister... an extremely
rare human," Amitabh
wrote.
The actor also wrote about
the special bond Vajpayee
shared with his father.
"Despite his prominence
as a leader of eminence,
Atalji never hesitated to
meet up with my father...
Particularly on one
occasion when my father
had selected he was very
happy, specially with
'Geet naya gata hoon',
which was among his personal
favourites.
"However there was some
doubt over another poem
'Thann gayi maut se'
which we had selected.
Though Atalji himself
loved the selection his
(adopted) daughter and
others close to him felt it
was wrong of him to challenge
death through poetry.
So we decided to
drop that poem. When we
told Atalji of our decision
he was very quiet then he
said, if that's what everyone
wants, then so be it."
Lataji says she has seldom
been more impressed by
any other politician.
"Atalji hriday se kavi the
aur swabhav se sadhu (he
was a poet at heart and a
saint by nature). He was a
visionary and India made
rapid progress during his
primeministership. I remember
how much he did
to improve relations with
Pakistan. He started the
bus service to Pakistan.
And he was very keen that
I be one of the first passengers
in that journey to
the other side of the border.
He told me that people
in Pakistan were as
keen to hear me as people
in India. But I didn't go. It
was always hard to say no
to Atalji. He was such a
wonderful human being
and great statesman."
Lataji feels the nation has
lost more than Bharat
Ratna. "Dadda was man
with a vision. He could
see the future. His
speeches were works of
art. When he spoke, the
nation listened. I still have
his speeches on my mobile
phone. I can listen to
them for hours. In his going
India has been orphaned.
But then, if he
was in so much pain it
would've been selfish of
us to hold him back. He is
now relieved of all pain
probably regaling the gods
with his oration.
Vajpayee was an extremely rare
human being: Amitabh Bachchan
was admitted to AIIMS
hospital in Delhi, Atalji
visited him to ask after his
condition. I was there. His
compassion and concern
was most gracious''.
"It was Atalji who agreed
to launch and honour the
occasion when the „stamp'
was inaugurated in my
father's name. It was in
Lucknow."
Big B, 75, also recounted
the birthday routine
when Vajpayee would
r in g h im on h i s
special day, and he would
ring the politician on his
birthday.

Asian Games 2018: Indian
INDONESIA: The Indian
contingent on Saturday has
reached Jakarta for the 18th
contingent consists of 804
athletes and officials. The
opening ceremony will be
held at Gelora Bung Karno
(GBK) main stadium in
Jakarta. The ceremony will
start at 5.30 pm IST.
The 18th Asian Games will
stand as a reality check for
the Indian athletes who are
recovering from the
Commonwealth Games
high.
India notched up their
second best medal tally of
all time at Gold Coast CWC
2018. India will be competing
with teams such as
China, Japan and Korea in
the Asiad.
Th build-up for the Indian
contingent has been rather
chaotic with controversies
over the size of the contingent
and complaints around
the selection procedures but
nevertheless, this has not
dampened the spirit of Indian
athletes.
The contenders range from a
16-year-old schoolgirl
from Haryana in Manu
Bhaker (shooting) to the
proven-but-struggling Sushil
Kumar (wrestling) to the inform
and consistently
rising to new heights, Neeraj
Chopra (Javelin Throw).
Then there are the likes of
Hima Das, a sprint
sensation who has raised
hopes by becoming the first
Indian woman to claim a
world championships gold,
albeit in the under-20
competition.
Mumbai: 'Love Sonia',
based on the horrors of child
trafficking, will release on
September 14.
Tabrez Noorani's 'Love
Sonia' is a hard-hitting story
of a 17-year-old girl who
risks her life to rescue her
sister from a vicious human
trafficking network across
India, Hong Kong and Los
Angeles. The film has got
standing ovations globally
for its touching tale about
human trafficking. It also
won the best Indie Film
Award at Indian Film
Festival of Melbourne 2018.
It features Mrunal Thakur in
her debut film role, with a
cast including Freida Pinto,
Manoj Bajpayee, Richa
Chadha, Rajkummar Rao,
Sai Tamhankar, Adil Hussain
and Mark Duplass, with
a special appearance by
Demi Moore.
"After the incredible
audience reactions in
London and Melbourne, I
am thrilled that the movie is
now releasing back home in
India. I am blessed with a
game to the table on the
big stage can never be
discounted but it remains
to be seen how her body
responds to what has been
a grueling season so far.
Along with K Srikkanth
and HS Prannoy, they are
among those expected to
contribute to India's medal
tally.
India can also hope for a
good show on the
wrestling mat where the
inf-rom duo of Bajrang
Punia and Vinesh Phogat
are being seen as sure-shot
medal hopes.
Punia not only won a gold
at CWG but also emerged
champion at Tbilisi Grand
Prix and Yasar Dogu
International in the run-up
to the Jakarta Games.
However, it's redemption
time for a few struggling
stars. Olympic medallists
Sushil Kumar and
Sakshi Malik are not in
the best of form. Sushil
recently lost his first bout
in four years at the Tbilisi
GP in Georgia and
Sakshi failed to reach the
medal round at Yasar
Dogu in Istanbul.
Their reputations are at
stake and nothing less
than a gold will be able to
redeem those.
The men's hockey
team will be aiming for a
gold and a direct entry
into the 2020 Tokyo
Olympics. The team,
which recently ended
runner-up to Australia
at the Champions
T r oph y, d oes n ot
have many tough nuts to
crack and it will only
be a disaster if it returns
without gold.
The women's team missed
out on a historic place in
the world cup semifinals
powerful ensemble cast
and all of them have contributed
to make this film
special," Noorani said in a
statement.
Producer David Womark
said: "I am deeply thankful
for the accolades 'Love
Sonia' has got so far in
London and Melbourne.
Tabrez has made a powerful
film and I am glad we
are now releasing in India."
A film which Noorani had
been planning for at least
a decade, 'Love Sonia'
enters the dark alleys
where sex trafficking is a
business and sexual exploitation
and oppression
To this, co-producer
Indian captain Virat Kohli
on Friday took a dig at
critics questioning his chop
“We need to focus on this
Test and not think about
whether someone's career
bizarre thought to have,"
Kohli said at the pre-match
The skipper, who has
changed his playing XI 37
times in as many Tests as
captain, said his players
did not feel threatened that
the team‟s priority was to
win matches.
"I don't think anyone is
thinking like that. These
are just things that are created
on the outside and
people like to make a lot of
nothing. For us, the priority
is to win games of
cricket. We are not thinking
whether someone's
career is on the line or
what's going to happen to
their future," Kohli said.
