Alooooha!
WHEW! The 45 th Transpac Race 2009 is now in the history books, and I believe
it will go down as the biggest and best Transpac ever. There may have been
fewer boats to enter the harbor this Transpac, but in terms of fun and aloha, it
was bigger than ever.
I had the opportunity to go to Long Beach for the start of the race, and had the honor of meeting many of the
participants and spread some aloha (and sell some tickets to our Mt. Gay Party). I found them all to be a great bunch
who were looking forward to their starts, their journey, and their arrival into Hawaii.
The Lynx, a 122 ft square topsail schooner was one of the entries in this years Transpac. They weren’t able to keep up
with the sleeker, faster boats, but they certainly made a grand entrance. Upon entering the harbor, they fired off three
rounds cannon blasts before docking at the HYC Aloha Dock. If you didn’t get a chance to see the Lynx while it was at
HYC, it will be at Ko Olina until August 9.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch (HYC), preparations were in the final stages, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the boats.
I can’t express enough my gratitude to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this Transpac so successful. I
also want to thank those volunteers who are not members, and hope that this experience will encourage you to become a
member.
Everyone did a fantastic job. The Galley by the Sea was in overdrive. The host parties were memorable, and the Mt.
Gay Party was the best ever. In fact, according to the Mt. Gay reps, it was their largest party ever. The most hats they
have ever given out at one party were 600. We handed out (with tickets) 800! Hats off to our Vice Commodore, Sterling
Lau, for putting the party together, to Fred Samuels for coordinating the bar operations, and to Nick Woytenko, General
Manager for his hard work in setting up the staging, lights and sound. I also have to recognize Linell Kam, and the
Cruising & Voyaging Society, who did an excellent job in putting together the awards ceremony at the Waikiki Shell.
Now that things are back to normal, however you define normal, in case you haven’t noticed, we have a new floor in the
lower bar. Thanks to Mike Bullington and Tony Cole – no more stinky carpet. I also want to thank Tim “Squeegee”
Ryan for taking the time to clean all the glass doors downstairs.
The beer and wine societies have been a great success. Meetings were not scheduled in July because of Transpac, but
now that is over the Beer Society has scheduled their next meeting for August 13, 6:00 pm, and the Wine Society has
scheduled their next meeting for August 20. Both will be held at HYC Lower Deck. Watch your e-mails and notices for
reminders.
Hi Folks!
It was all about TRANSPAC 2009 for the Hawaii Yacht Club’s
Transpac Committees, and we were ready for success before
the yachts of the 45 th Transpac race arrived in Hawaii’s waters.
Preparations for the arrival of the sailors and their families,
including the concurrent activities of the Transpac Yacht Club,
events sponsored by our sister yacht clubs, and the awards
ceremony, were all meshed with our own plans involving HYC’s
Mount Gay Rum Okole Maluna Party. It went off like a military
operation in which our committees and HYC members such as
Barbara Silvey and Linell Kam, working with the Transpac Yacht
Club, all played their parts with grace and precision, thereby
assuring a lucrative financial outcome so necessary for our club at
this time.
In early February 2009, Staff Commodore Miles Anderson and
General Manager Nick Woytenko provided me valuable insight
involving best practices in approaching profitable Transpac
celebration activities learned from past experience. Their
information precluded “re-invention of the wheel” and enabled me
to put together a credible working format going into a first meeting
with 14 volunteers on April 11. Our purpose then, as it is now, was
to focus on the success of HYC. By our fourth meeting on June
27 th , we had 73 volunteers, with all of our committees initially
staffed. Discussions of probable scenarios involving the service
of arriving sailors and their families by our club were held. The
location of HYC in relation to the mooring of the arriving yachts
was heavily in our favor. Written operational plans rendered by our
major committee heads to me showed that we were indeed ready.
After the 4 th of July, It was found that our galley services
necessitated immediate assistance in furnishing an appropriate
number and quality of “Pupu’s” with which to successfully fulfill
our event. Assistance, in the form of Bertie Gaspar, a woman well
versed in culinary services, was found to be a good match with
Chef Alfredo Lee, and the proof was in the tasting.
On Monday, the 6 th of July, the Gatewatch Committee and the Ship’s
Store began their stints at the HYC. By Saturday morning July 11,
the Alfa Romeo crossed the finish line at Diamond Head and was
met in the darkness by member George Machado and his crew. It
seemed like the ice had been broken, and the yachts seemed to
appear in the Ala Wai harbor mouth with great regularity, and at
all hours. Each yacht was met by a “chicken skin” Hawaiian chant
and a loud greeting of “Alohaaa” by Commodore Howie Mednick,
the “Voice of Transpac.” Two apprentices, Staff Commodore Al
Bento, and Rear Commodore for Power Boolie Whitmire were in
close proximity and were allowed to stretch their vocal chords on
occasion. There may be future possibilities for both in the world of
“Pitchmen”, or loftier still, a curtain call on “American Idol.”
By this time, most of the HYC Transpac Committees were in full
swing. It was great to see the fresh smiling faces of the Gatewatch
folks, no matter the hour. It must have been the examples set by Bill
Taylor and Lillian Russell. Also in perennial attendance to serve
Vice Commodore
Sterling Lau
the yachtsmen and visitor alike, were Officer of the Deck, Barbara
Mednick , and Aloha/Hospitality heads, Norma Jean Cavell, and
Patty Naiyoke. They were perseverance personified. All of our
committees were running as smooth as silk.
One magnificent reason for the smooth coordination of personnel
within their committees lay in the hands of our “scheduler” Antje
Gruenewald, who could be seen riding her bicycle to the club at all
hours to account for new volunteers who had recently signed up on
a running log next to the lower deck office. Our volunteer list kept
growing and the new personnel were assigned to an appropriate
committee in which to work. This was a major factor in the success
of our operation.
Prior to June 22 nd , Staff Commodore Verne Russell had put up his
version of the sign-up board, and had already started to make our
badges to be used during the Transpac season at the club. One day
we saw his framed photograph fastened to the sign-up board next
to the office. He had recently returned home from the hospital and
appeared to be in good spirits. Many of the volunteers were puzzled
with the placement of his picture on the board. The reason became
crystal clear shortly thereafter.
Two coconut-tree bars were constructed by Tony Cole, Ken
Downes, Scott Fretz, and Richard Page on the lower deck grassy
area. The table surfaces were covered by Paula Sumida and me
with a bamboo wood design contact paper, which made it look like a
real bar top. On the day before our party, the bars were embellished
with palm fronds by Susie Heidrich, and lighting by Kai Blake and
other members. Wilfred Arakaki was the “do it all” person and was
inspiring to watch. General Manager Nick Woytenko turned the
lights on after dark and exclaimed that the bars were decorated the
best that he’d ever seen.
On July 15, early on the day of the party, tickets to the Mount Gay
Rum Okole Maluna Party, were sold out. There were throngs of
people clamoring at the window of the HYC Office. It was at this
time that I felt that the purpose of our planning and work was “in
the can” ---we had succeeded.
The entertainment was special, and a great big mahalo goes to
Trisha Steele for her inspiration and encouragement of Amy
Hanaialii to give freely and lovingly of her time and expense in
providing a wonderful musical performance along with her band
and hula dancer for the excited audience at the Hawaii Yacht Club.
The Johnny Rock Society (which followed Amy’s performance)
added the frosting to a great event and season.
The greatest contribution of all came from 200+ of our own
member volunteers, whose spirit and sense of commonality and
family came together to help us achieve a wonderful success during
TRANSPAC 2009 for Hawaii Yacht Club. Special Kudos to the
HYC Galley, Chef Alfredo Lee, Bertie Gaspar, General Manager
Nick Woytenko and the HYC Office Staff members Mei and Jerry
who worked so hard. Aloha to you all, and see you at the Club!
New Voice Of Transpac
the beginning there was one. Then
– Voices of Transpac. Staff Commodore
Al Bento, Rear Commodore for Power
Transpac for the 45th Transpac Race
2009.
As each boat entered the channel to the
chant alerted everyone around the grounds
of HYC that there was a Transpac boat
entering the channel, giving all ample time
to find a comfortable vantage point to watch
the boat as they ended their 2225 mile
race across the Pacific. At the end of the
chant, and as the boat approached HYC,
they were greeted by Hawaiian music, a
huge Alooooooooha, and the names of
the skipper and crew were individually
mentioned, along with a little skuttlebut
about each crew member, if available. The
music following this was generally a special
request by the boat, which played as they
boolie, howie & al
headed down the channel to their berth
along Transpac Row. All of this blaring,
no matter what time of day or night, over
the loud speakers, controlled by the Voices
of Transpac located in the corner of the
upper deck at HYC.
Staff Commodore Al Bento did a great
job with the announcing, however, I was
on hand to que up the music as Al was
a bit technologically challenged with the
computers. Boolie, on the other hand,
was great with the announcements and
the music, but he could use a little work
on his Aloooooooha. Actually, I have no
complaints about any of the additional
sleep deprived Voices of Transpac. They
all did a fantastic job, and were available
no matter what time of day or night.
There were times when the three of us
laughed so hard we cried. The sounds of
Beethoven’s Fifth Movement was one of
those moments. We worked as a team,
laughed as a team, and got the job done as
a team. My sincere appreciation goes out
to Al and Boolie. More importantly, due
to the teamwork, we were able to save our
voices and sanity.
We three Voices of Transpac, Al, Boolie,
and myself, (Los Tres Amigos) look
forward to Transpac 2011.
Aloha Racers!
Amidst the Transpac racers arriving, we held our annual Mesick
Series Regatta. This series was a 3 day event consisting of a
night race, 2 around the buoys races and lastly a slog up to
Koko Head and back. Conditions were blustery which tested
crew skills. Several protest flags popped up during the racing,
however, in the end the participants dropped their protests.
Having fun was more important than sitting in a protest room.
Overall Results for the weekend: PH A – 1st – Boomerang,
2nd – Prima Donna, 3rd – Bondi Tram and 4th place went to
Cazan. Ph B – 1st – Demasiada. ORR A – 1st – Boomerang,
2nd – Cazan and ORR B – 1st – Demasiada. The Race
Committee got a workout as this series was a bit complicated
logistically. Well done Race Committee and special thanks to
PRO Johanna Katzman. Committee boats were provided by
yours truly, Mitch Burns and Bill Beadle.
Remember that there are other boats
prior to your starting that you may not
aware of and they have the RIGHT OF
WAY.
Sailing
Tony Miller
Rear Commodore for Sail
The Lahaina Race is fast approaching. If there is enough
interest, we will run a feeder race on 29 Aug from the Ala
Wai to Kamalapau, Lanai. The Needles or Black Manele are
possible mooring spots after the race. Also, we are still thinking
about moving the starting line for the Lahaina Race to off of
Kapalua. We would appreciate your input for this and the Lanai
Race. Please email me at eye2020@hula.net as soon as possible.
Another reminder will be emailed to all racers in mid-August.
As RC for Sail, I would like to thank all of the powers that be,
volunteers and folks on the clock for a smashingly successful
Mt. Gay Okole Maluna Transpac party. This one will be
remembered for a long time. Energy was high and at HYC you
could truly feel the Aloha Spirit.
On a serious note, we still have boats participating in the Friday
Night Races that are oblivious to other yachts which are in their
starting sequence. Remember that there are other boats prior
to your starting that you may not aware of and they have the
RIGHT OF WAY. The Friday night fleet has grown over the
years and it is important that you communicate to the Race
Committee WELL BEFORE your intention to race and your
declaration as to either spinnaker or non-spinnaker class.
participated in the qualifiers
for the Sears Cup on July 15
and 16th in Pearl Harbor.
The Sears Cup is US Sailing’s
Keelboat Jr Championship
and will be held in Rhodes
19s and the Pearl Harbor
Yacht Club along with the
Navy’s Morale, Welfare and
Recreation Dept hosted a
great event. There was a
clinic on July 15 and the race
was on the 16 with teams
from Pearl Harbor, Waikiki,
and Hawaii Yacht Clubs.
The winds were 12-18 knots
and the racing was very close
with the three boats crossing tacks often. Going into the last
race there was a tie and the winner of the race would decide
the series. PHYC finished a half a boat length in front and will
represent Hawaii in Massachusetts at the Sears Cup this August.
Congratulations to a great series to the HYC team of Mitchell
Woodrow, Tristan Stenek and Colby Curtis. They were able
to sail to two firsts in the regatta and had an exciting race
5. Thanks to Dean Smith at Pearl Harbor along with Seamus
Murphy for hosting the day.
The US Sailing Association Junior Olympic Sailing Festival
for Hawaii was held July 6-10 with events in 420s, Toppers,
El Toros and Lasers. The first three days was the 420 regatta
with 10 boats competing with trapeze and spinnaker. There
were many blazing reaches and some great upwind shots during
the last day. The last two days had the Toppers, El Toros,
and Lasers sailing in some windy conditions. There were 90
competitors from Kaneohe, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and Hawaii
Yacht Clubs. The banquet for the event was put together by
Anastasia Stallings whom we thank for such a great afternoon.
We’ve had a great summer program and I owe a lot of thanks
to our instructor staff of Jackson Cook, Ailana Warren, Ali
Crighton, Laura Hughes and Colby Curtis. They make
everything happen on a daily basis.
Upcoming events include two Hawaii Laser Association races
on August 1 and 2nd; and two 420 regattas on August 5 and 6.
Adult sailing lessons are taught on an ongoing basis in our Cal
20 and 420 fleet.
cooking hamburgers, steak, shrimp, fish tacos; hula dancers
accompanied by an ensemble of ukulele players entertained to
Below _Cruisers wait to welcome Far Niente
The Cruising and Voyaging Society is
a broad mix of people with a common
goal: to have as much fun on and
around the water as possible! July was a
prime example as many of our members
dove into the Transpac experience and
had a ball. Bill and Lillian headed up
gate watch, Norma Jean hospitality, and
Society members served as the greeters
for the Awards Ceremony under Linell’s
leadership. Members of the Cruising
and Voyaging Society served as OD,
decorators, escort boats, pier ops, you get
the idea…. The whole group acted as host
for Transpac boat Far Niente, welcoming
them upon their arrival with food and
Mai Tai’s, to the delight of the crew and
their families. Skipper Pat Hearne then
showed their appreciation by treating the
host committee to brunch at the yacht
Cruising & Voyaging
club. While we didn’t have a formal cruise
in July, we sure lived vicariously through
our interaction with all of the Transpac
racers.
The First Sunday Brunch on July 5th had
nearly 20 participants. The kitchen did
a fine job and the conversation was lively.
These First Sunday get-togethers are
informal, no agenda or speakers… just a
