Immix Ensemble: Kelly Lee Owens
Invisible Wind Factory – 20/09
Kelly Lee Owens
IMMIX ENSEMBLE continue to move from strength to strength as one
of the leading purveyors of innovative music in the North West. The
collective’s next show, in partnership with Liverpool Biennial, invites
stripped-back techno-pop vocalist KELLY LEE OWENS to combine her
electronic instrumentation with classical arrangements provided by
Immix. Using her own songwriting as a springboard, the performance
will allow Owens and the ensemble’s composer to explore the
intricacies of her song structures, embarking along alternative
imaginings of their original form. Extending the performance’s sensory
appeal, the show will be set before the backdrop of a collection of
immersive visuals created by THOMAS GILL.
Wooden Shjips
Invisible Wind Factory – 14/09
Returning after a five-year hiatus, San Francisco’s very own purveyors of
cyclical psychedelia are back to take over the Invisible Wind Factory for a
night sure-bound for hazy intensity and otherworldly textures. The beardtoting
four-piece have returned with the critically-acclaimed album V which
features intricate vocals slipping between waves of minimalist rhythms. It’s
an LP that creepily unfolds to unveil swathes of smouldering flower power
optimism amid a less-than-optimistic era – on both sides of the Atlantic.
WOODEN SHJIPS’ compelling blend of krautrock-influenced pysch is a
treat to the ears as their looping licks are poised to transport the Northern
Docks right back to the summer of love.
CLUB
SisBis Is One!
Rat Alley – 15/09
Conceived on a holiday romance in Italy, revved up on the stunning selections
of Donna Leake, SISBIS made the seamless, successful transition to Liverpool
12 months ago – and hasn’t looked back since. Head honcho GIOVANNA
is piloting this birthday edition of the monthly club night, and has snared a
perfect headliner in the form of FLO DILL. The host of the monthly Flo Motion
show on NTS is always striving to find a future classic, and it’s that restless
ethos that fits so well with SisBis’ own manifesto. Regulars and friends LUPINI
(Melodic Distraction) and TIZ (Anti Social Jazz Club) are also on the bill – if you
haven’t discovered the delights of SisBis yet, now is the time to start.
FESTIVAL
Fusion Festival
Otterspool Promenade – 01/09-02/09
If the festival season has passed you by, then September still offers the
chance to dance outdoors in the final licks of heat falling from a recordbreaking
summer. Few festivals hitting the banks of the Mersey this
month will be able to offer as much chart topping pulling power than
FUSION – the brainchild of radio station Capital FM. An alternative to
your usual gig going experience, expect high production values when
behemoths such as DAVID GUETTA, JESS GLYNNE, SHAWN MENDES,
CLEAN BANDIT, YEARS & YEARS and DISCIPLES hit the stage at
Otterspool over the course of the two-day festival.
CLUB
Circus 16th Birthday
Camp and Furnace – 29/09
Alan Fitzpatrick
It’ll be 16 years young for Circus come the end of the month. As you might expect, the clubbing mainstay has no
designs of putting up its dancing feet up and taking a well-earned rest any time soon. This year’s birthday bash
boasts an A-list of invitees, including the prospect of a rare b2b outing between longstanding dancefloor conductor
SASHA and contemporary frontrunner of big room techno ALAN FITZPATRICK. With it being a birthday, it seems
fitting that EATS EVERYTHING will be given the opportunity to reflect on Circus’ 16-year exploits with a special
‘history set’. And to top this all off, the evening’s special guest Larry Heard will assume the form of MR FINGERS for a
rare live performance on Merseyside.
FESTIVAL
Merseyrail Sound Station Live
Liverpool Central Station – 28/09
You no longer have to go out trawling for the region’s next big musical stars, because the
future sound of Liverpool is coming to you. Following two months of structured support and
mentoring, 11 of the 13 artists taking part in the all-new MERSEYRAIL SOUND STATION artist
development programme will be performing live in Central Station as part of this year’s BBC
Music Day. The artists, who represent the cream of the current crop of emerging music makers
in the city, have taken part in a number of seminars and workshops aimed at helping them
improve their skills and general awareness of how to succeed in the music industry. You can
come and see them in the flesh, and for free, between 2pm and 9pm on Friday 28th September
– and watch out for them performing across the network in the coming weeks, too. You can
even catch up with their progress at merseyrailsoundstation.com.
