The Great Outdoors 

Long before the perpetual bombardment of emails, social media, stressful jobs and 

consumer pressures we lived in the great outdoors. Residing amidst trees, water, the sky 

and the weather… innately embraced by nature. 

It can be claimed that life was much easier back then. Sure, we lived shorter lives and infant 

mortality was pretty scary, but psychologically there was simplicity. Rules were virtually nonexistent. 

We didn’t need to work and there were no choices or decisions regarding lifestyle 

because everyone had exactly the same - which was not much. 

Contemporary life can be crammed full of worries; choices, injustices, confusions, congestion 

and anxieties, and many of us struggle to breath under that sort of heaviness. Those 

searching for an antidote may be pleasantly surprised to discover the rejuvenating qualities 

of getting amongst our historical 

alfresco habitat. 

It kind of makes sense if you think 

about it. Humankind walked 

(getting our exercise fix and 

boosting our serotonin and 

endorphin levels) through 

grassland and trees gathering food 

for millions of years. Just 12,000 

years ago the agricultural 

revolution gave us physically hard, 

dawn to dusk jobs, but at least we 

were under the sky. The 

industrial revolution took us out of 

the countryside and put us into factories. Most of us have stopped working in the fresh air. 

So, does being in nature allow more free ‘head space’ for you to be closer to the true you? 

Are you able to be more peaceful - more in the moment - less worried or happier? Many 

medical professionals and psychologists indicate that human beings have an inborn desire to 

be part of nature calling this phenomenon ‘Biophilia’. 

For some, modern life can sometimes seem like a bit of a struggle. Being amongst the flora 

and fauna renews the mind and soul. 

The evidence is too compelling to ignore, take time to get out there and go for a walk or a run 

or just sit in the great outdoors.

Diabetes not taken seriously by UK public, says Diabetes UK 

‣ There are 169 diabetes-related amputations each week, which means someone loses a leg, 

foot or toe every HOUR 

‣ People with diabetes are 32% more likely to die prematurely than people without the condition 

‣ 12.3m people in UK at risk of Type 2 diabetes, yet public unaware of the devastating health 

complications 

Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to devastating health complications, but new 

research by Diabetes UK reveals that only a small percentage of the British public are aware of 

how life-changing this condition can be. 

A new survey by Walnut Unlimited (1), which spoke to 1,000 people with and without a link to 

diabetes shows the extent of this lack of awareness, with only 2% spontaneously saying a stroke, 

kidney damage (4%) and heart disease (6%) are complications of diabetes. 

Despite amputation and blindness being prevalent diabetes-related complications, only one in four 

(25%) of people surveyed said, unprompted, that they were linked to diabetes. Furthermore, the 

survey found that no one spontaneously knew diabetes could cause problems in pregnancy and 

only 2% knew diabetes could lead to a shorter life span or early death (4%). 

Evidence shows just how serious this condition can be. The recent National Diabetes Audit (NDA) 

into Complications and Mortality (2) shows that people with diabetes are 32% more likely to die 

prematurely than people without diabetes, due largely to the health complications resulting from 

diabetes. 

Additional figures from Public Health England show there were 8,793 amputations a year on 

average between 2014 and 2017 which equates to 169 amputations each week, or one every 

hour. The number of minor amputations, which includes a toe, heel or foot also continues to rise 

each year. 

Similarly, more than 1,600 people have their sight seriously affected by their diabetes every year 

in the UK. This means around 30 people a week develop sight loss due to their diabetes. 

Diabetes is a significant health crisis, and it is on the rise. Analysis from Diabetes UK shows the 

number of people being diagnosed with diabetes has doubled in the last 20 years. There are now 

3.7 million people in the UK living with a diabetes diagnosis (90% have Type 2 diabetes) and 

around 12.3 million people are at an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. The condition now affects 

more people than any other serious health condition in the UK - more than dementia and cancer 

combined.

However, diabetes-related complications can be prevented or delayed 

with early diagnosis, support and education to ensure the condition is 

managed correctly. To support this, Diabetes UK has launched a new 

campaign called ‘Be in the know’ which aims to raise awareness of the 

devastating complications associated with diabetes. 

Peter Shorrick, Midlands and Eastern Regional Head at Diabetes UK, said: “Losing a 

limb, eyesight or having a stroke is devastating and often life-changing. It is vital 

people with diabetes receive the right support from their healthcare teams to help 

them identify any early signs of a complication. 

“Many complications can be prevented or delayed so it is incredibly important that 

people with diabetes are vigilant and contact their GP as soon as possible if they 

have any concerns.”

The Advanced Driver Course 

NAM was founded 40 years ago. Since then we have helped 

close to 1000 people pass the advanced driving test. Our 

intention is not to just get people through the test, but to 

work with them to permanently improve their driving. 

The course is not time limited, nor is there a maximum 

number of sessions. Individuals will vary in how long it 

takes to reach advanced standard and drive consistently at 

that level. 

As part of our celebrations we are running a driving 

challenge for young drivers. This will be fun experience with

Mighty 

Magnus’ 

Medicine 

THE village of Brixworth has rallied in support of a brave six-year-old fighting a rare 

childhood cancer. 

The story of Magnus, diagnosed last Christmas with stage 4 Neuroblastoma - a 

highly aggressive cancer affecting children under 5, has inspired friends, 

neighbours and the wider community in the Northamptonshire village to help fund 

life-saving treatment not available in the UK. 

A host of fund raising events have been held and are planned for the year, 

including at Brixworth Primary School where six-year-old Magnus is a pupil. The 

Rotary e-club of district 1070 has also taken the charity under their wing and 

recently organised a Race Night which raced over £2000. 

Meanwhile local tradespeople are generously donating a percentage of their 

income. So far, the Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund has raised over £30,000 - and 

Magnus’s parents Kate and Sandy are overwhelmed by the support and generosity. 

Kate says: ‘This has been such a tough eight months for us since Magnus’s 

diagnosis because his treatment has been so intensive, but we could not have got 

through it all without the amazing kindness and support from so many people, 

including complete strangers who have been so generous and taken Magnus to 

their hearts.’ 

In January Magnus was admitted to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham 

where scans showed he had a large abdominal tumour and like many other 

children with Neuroblastoma the disease had already spread to his bones and bone 

marrow. He started chemotherapy the following day.

Approximately one hundred children in the UK will be diagnosed every year with 

Neuroblastoma, and of those around half will be in the high-risk category. The 

treatment is punishing - a prolonged course of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, stem 

cell replacement and immunotherapy over one year, and major surgery to remove 

the tumour. It is a challenging illness to treat and Magnus will require constant 

monitoring in the years following. 

Amazingly Magnus has responded as well as can be hoped to the treatment so far; 

an embodiment of the spirit and strength of the Viking warriors that he so loves. 

For his Viking-themed sixth birthday party in April Magnus was so determined not to 

disappoint his guests that he received a blood transfusion in the morning to give 

him the energy to conquer the day. The Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund was 

created in May to raise funds for essential treatment not offered by the NHS. At the 

time a vital drug required for treatment - Dinutuximab Beta - was not available and 

the family faced the prospect of having to fund this themselves. 

Thankfully the NHS has now since advised that it will fund this drug following a 

public campaign. This has come as a massive relief for Magnus’ family and the 

other families who were facing months of uncertainty. 

But, in order to give Magnus the best chance of survival and avoid the high risk of 

relapse, he will need access to the latest and most innovative treatments currently 

only available in the US and elsewhere. Facebook and Just Giving pages have 

been set up for the Mighty Magnus Medicine Fund, and they would love to hear 

from you if you can assist in any way with organising events or fund raising.

explores a difficult time in her life throughout the poem and the effects that 

fostering has had, helping her to develop strong, loving relationships. 

The relationships were horrible. Then everything was terrible. 

Heartbroken was how I felt all the time. Then turned into the worst crime. 

Every day I was so depressed. And everything turned into a mess. 

Smashing the house was the worst thing I’d done. And it was really not that fun. 

The feeling of the police at my bedroom window. All of a sudden, I felt really low. 

My life. 

Falling out with my family what can I do, a nice fresh start and something new. 

I had enough so I went to London. The whole thing felt terrifying and I felt done in. 

That night we all got high, I felt I was dancing in the sky. 

Hearing my name on the news. Got me shaking in my shoes. 

My life. 

I walked in the doors and it felt like a prison. The whole 7 months felt like a mission. 

Upset was the worst thing I’ve felt. I just wanted to hide and melt. 

How can depression make you feel so sad? I thought it won’t make you feel so bad. 

For the first few weeks I was annoyed. Everything around made me feel destroyed. 

My life. 

Leaving the place was such an achievement. So happy I thought I was dreaming. 

Foster care was a whole new place. Like I won my first 100-mile race. 

Loved is the first thing I felt. Wrapped around tightly like a seat belt. 

After all of this we made up. Finally, after this horrible break up. 

Our relationships are stronger than before. We love each other more and more. 

My life.

The Northampton Musical Theatre Company have been proudly performing 

since 1898 to Northampton audiences. In 2011 the company changed its name 

from NAOC to NMTC as it was decided that the name 'Northampton Amateur 

Operatic Company' no longer described who we are and what we do. 

We produce at least one musical theatre show and a concert each year striving 

to be one of the best local award-winning companies. Our recent productions

Unite against dementia at a Memory Walk this Autumn 

Helen Crawford, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Northamptonshire 

In a few weeks’ time, I’ll be tying my shoelaces and checking the weather 

forecast for Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. 

This year, Memory Walk aims to raise £9million nationally and bring 

together a total of 110,000 walkers across the generations. 

If you’ve not been to a Memory Walk before, I’d like to encourage you to 

unite against dementia and register for free at memorywalk.org.uk. 

Dementia devastates lives, but every pound raised through Memory Walk 

will help Alzheimer’s Society provide vital information and support, 

improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people 

affected by the condition. 

Each walk sees thousands of people come together to raise money to 

support people living with dementia and raise funds for research. We 

always ask people to take a moment to reflect on who they are walking 

for by leaving a message on the Memory Tree. It’s an emotional moment 

as the tree blossoms with hundreds of individual stories of local people 

whose lives have been touched by dementia. 

It’s an important reminder of the scale of the dementia crisis. Dementia is 

now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three 

minutes.

We need new treatments for dementia now - there have been none in 

the last 15 years. We owe it to the 8000 people in Northamptonshire 

currently living with dementia to understand the condition better, so that 

they can live better. 

We believe that research
