About Amman
Being the center of communication, commerce, industry as well as cultural life, the city holds a special place
in Jordan. Due to the temperate climate and modern-day prosperity almost half of the Jordanian population
Brief History
Today’s Amman before 1875 solely consisted of the long forgotten biblical town of Rabbath Ammon. Later,
the town became the flourishing Roman city of Philadelphia and the ancient ruins including an
amphitheater can be still found. In the 1870s the Circassians encouraged by the Ottoman Empire started
settling the area and developed it as a commercial center. In 1905, this was further augmented with the
construction of Hijaz railroad which became the major communication link that connected Amman with
Damascus, Constantinople (Istanbul) and the Hijaz (i.e. the western Arabian peninsula of Mecca and
Medina). Later in 1921, when Amir Abdullah I ibn Hussein, the head of newly formed Hashimite Emirate of
Transjordan, made it his residence and his capital, its official role of Amman established to a great extent. By
the 1980s, Amman was still referred as the largest Palestinian city in the world due to the predominance of
Palestinian residents in the city.
