Cumnor House Girls School Magazine 2017-2018

Welcome
From
The
Head
Mistress
I would like to officially thank
you – pupils, parents and staff,
for welcoming me to Cumnor
House School for Girls and
helping me along my first steps
of this stage of my life’s journey
– one that I began with a degree
of excitement and trepidation.
It seems particularly pertinent
to think about journeys with
our Year Six girls moving on to
their next schools, other girls
leaving to pastures new and staff
moving on to their next stages.
When we know that we are to
journey, we plan where we will
go, who and what we will see,
we have an idea of some of
the destinations, and we may
even put a time scale on things.
Girls, as you journey there will
be set events, things that are
inevitable like birthdays and
GCSE’s. You will expect some
family events; births, marriages,
funerals and every event will
have a different effect upon you.
It’s exciting, this journey into
the unknown, there should be a
feeling of anticipation, excitement
– perhaps a touch of nerves.
Journeys require that you prepare
and this is no different, you
need to pack your metaphorical
bag. I was thinking about what
would be useful things to have
– apart from Kendall Mint Cake.
Curiosity – always be curious,
never be afraid to wonder
and ask questions.
Good humour – no one wants
to spend lots of time with
people who are negative all the
time and sometimes difficult
times can be helped by having
a smile and kind words
Courage - on this journey
there will be tricky bits and
you will need to be brave –
but know that you can be
Resilience – you will have
setbacks, I can guarantee
that. Resilience will help
you to deal with them
Humility – accept that others
will know better, see that
as a safe thing and it goes
hand in hand with Trust,
don’t forget to pack Trust.
Adaptability – you may have to
change route, mode of travel, with
little or no warning but stay calm,
think, problem solve and adapt
what you do in order to carry on
Self-reflection – never be
complacent or arrogant, by
thinking that your way is the
best and only way, be prepared
to admit your mistakes
and then do things better.
There is no shame in that
Compassion – care for those
around you, those who you love
and those who you don’t love.
Have empathy and understanding.
Faith – your faith, if you have
one, but also faith in yourself.
Believe that you can. Tell yourself
that you can – you are stronger
than you would ever believe…if
you allow yourself to be that is.
Where will you go? There is
no fixed destination, you go
where your heart leads you.
Circumstance may take you in one
direction and serendipity may
take you in another. Sometimes
you just need to accept and go
with the flow. Know that the
journey will be filled with twists
and turns – that is what will
2
make it interesting. There will be
bumps, and potholes and after a
while you will learn to recognise
them and walk around them. You
will fall over, you will get knocks
and bruises – think of them as
learning injuries. Don’t let the
fear of getting hurt stop you from
journeying on. There will be flat
and uninteresting parts, some
easy downhill bits and some
steep climbs. There will be joy
along your road, don’t forget to
enjoy it, don’t be in too much
of a hurry to miss the view and
try not to avoid conversations.
Connect with what is around
you, don’t be so busy that you
keep your head down – look
up, see the clouds morning
across the sky, listen to bird
song and wonder at waterfalls.
Connect with people, some will be
with you all the way through your
journey, others will drift in, stay
for a while and drift out - they
were there for a reason, connect.
Some people who wish to travel
with you may not have your best
interests at heart – choose your
travelling companions carefully.
Enjoy it, it won’t be easy all of
the time, it may not be easy
most of the time but you have
the right things packed in your
bag – remember to rummage
through and unpack what you
need to help you along the
way. Remember, this is no
one else’s journey but yours;
walk, sometimes scamper, or
skip – your journey, your way.
Message from
our Head Girl
My time at Cumnor has been an exciting and fulfilling journey.
Throughout the years, I have grown my tree of friends and
so many wonderful opportunities have been handed to
me. There was a lot of hard work too!! And it did pay off
when I was sitting my 11+ entrance exams. It was then that
I realised how well my school had prepared me, and how
the work we do at school is to such a high standard. I am
proud to say that, although the girls in my class and I had
our highs and lows during the 11+ period, nobody really
struggled and we have all had successful outcomes.
We have been blessed with amazing teachers who do a great
job presenting information in incredible ways, making it fun
to turn dry facts/serious events into plays, posters or Power
Point creations. We are always given challenging tasks to do.
I am sad thinking about leaving this school, all my memories
will be packed away and I will be forced to make new ones.
However, my time at Cumnor has already given me a head start
in life and I look forward to the rest of my learning journey.
Enough about leaving though! At the point of writing this, we
still have 2 months left of this school and we, together with
our teachers, are planning to make the most of it. So many
fun activities will fill our schedule during this last stretch: the
bushcraft trip and “the lion king” play are just a “preview”
in our programme; and it will be so much fun to be huddled
together with my classmates in a tent under the stars.
I am so grateful for Cumnor and I hope many other children
and their parents, look past its seemingly small appearance
and catch a glimpse of the beating heart of the school.
School Life
It’s been another busy and productive year in
the drama department. Every girl in the school
has been in at least one production and the
girls have also produced some wonderful
work in their weekly drama lessons.
The year started with performances at Harvest
Festival - poems, playlets and speeches were
performed with great confidence by all our girls.
December saw our youngest girls take on the
challenge of the annual nativity play. This years
offering was A Midwife Crisis and followed the
journey of a midwife who had heard about the
impending arrival of a special baby to Bethlehem
to see if she could be of help. Accompanied
by her trusty donkey, Steve, she ventured
across the land towards Bethlehem meeting
innkeepers, shepherds, wise men and angels
in their way. Reception, Year 1 and 2 performed
with great confidence and the audience really
enjoyed the festive atmosphere created.
The spring term saw Year 5 tackle Shakespeare and
Macbeth. Using a live lesson available via the RSC
the girls were able to learn from one of the RSC
directors about some of the most important scenes
in the play and use that during their rehearsal
process. We staged the show as if the girls were a
group of travelling players in Elizabethan England
and we saw some very fine acting from our Year 5’s.
The summer term was packed full of excitement
for the drama department. The year 6 girls went to
London to see The Lion King in the West End so they
could prepare for their moment in the spotlight.
Years 5 and 6 were treated to an extraordinary
workshop provided by the West End company
Showstoppers, where they spent their time learning
the craft of musical improvisation - with some
exceedingly amazing results and the facilitators of
the workshop were very impressed with our girls.
At the beginning of June Years 3 and 4 performed
their production of The Mystery of Magpie Manor.
This was a whodunnit style 1920’s musical so
there were feathers and flapper girls galore. We
saw some very lovely dancing and fine acting
skills and the girls really enjoyed the rehearsal
process and performing to a very full hall.
Year 6 (with support from the rest of KS2) staged a
magnificent ‘sell out’ production of The Lion King at
the end of June. The hall was packed with parents
who could not believe their eyes when the Circle
of Life played out and the whole hall was filled
with a menagerie of animals - all created by Year
6 - under the expert guidance of our wonderful Mrs
Clingan. A true whole KS2 effort - I think it’s safe to
say that the whole experience will not be forgotten.
Year 6 were outstanding in the leading roles and
we mustn’t forget Meghan and Sara who ably ran
the lighting and sound - assisted by Mr Kimber.
The final drama show of the year was presented
in the final week of term, by Reception, Year 1
and Year 2. The Bee Musical was a delightful
way to showcase how much our youngest
students have grown in confidence during
the year with a play filled with lovely music,
beautifully sung and with a strong message.
Year 5 held a mock election as part of
their public speaking and debate unit of
learning in drama in the summer term.
The girls have worked for most of the term on
understanding the democratic system in our country
and thinking about what would make a good election
speech and manifesto. The girls performed 6 parties:
Future, Progress, Vision, Tomorrow, Transform and
Discovery. We also had an election committee
which oversaw the official running of the election.
On Wednesday 13th June, the girls presented their
manifestos to the rest of the school in assembly
and on Thursday 14th June the big vote took place.
Counting was done and the result was decided
by how many year groups each party won. The
end result was a hung parliament with both
the Future and Discovery parties winning 3 Year
groups each! Congratulations to party leaders
Penelope and Naima and to party members
Matilda, Ilaria, Toluwa, Amaya, Alisha and Ruby.
Year 5 Girls’ MFL
Mastermind Competition
at Reigate Grammar School
Ten carefully selected pupils from Year 5 were
invited to take part in a Modern Foreign Language
Competition at Reigate Grammar School on Monday.
Eager to participate in their first Mastermind
Language Competition, the girls collaborated
with excitement when deciding upon their final
answers to the different questions and tasks they
were asked to fulfil. After discussion and a short
presentation by the girls to the other schools about
what ‘culture’ meant to them, we soon realised
that this competition was about the importance of
foreign language speaking across the world. The
competition began with an introduction to Japanese.
With interest and confidence, they soon discovered
that they were able to communicate successfully
and exchange information in Japanese within only
one hour’s teaching; proof that we are all able to
learn a new language, whichever one that may be.
Then there was a general quiz about national
flags, which was swiftly followed by a quiz about
French food. The girls particularly enjoyed the
poetry task they were set, which involved reciting,
by heart, a short poem in French. They performed
brilliantly, with perfect pronunciation, fluency and
intonation. The girls were awarded First Prize and
were each handed a certificate and a gift bag. Many
congratulations to each of you for being such perfect
ambassadors for Cumnor House Girls’ School. In
particular, for being so sociable and friendly with
the other school pupils taking part, and also for
working so effectively as a team. Bravo, les filles!
Sports Day
Sports Day in particular, both for Prep and
Pre-Prep, was a fantastic day. The girls ran,
threw, jumped, balanced and swam (in the
novelty race!) incredibly well. They enjoyed not
only their own races but watching their Mums,
Dads, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles etc having
some fun of their own. Thank you to everyone
for coming to watch and support the girls and
we’re already looking forward to next years!
