Welcome
From
The
Head
Master
Over the last few weeks and
months, I have reflected in
detail, on what has been an
incredible and busy first year
as Headmaster. Headmaster’s
normally focus on the year
past and describe in detail the
highlights of the year. A year
that as a community, we have all
contributed to and participated
in. So I asked myself. Should
I be focussing solely on the
past? Well, yes I look back with
fondness over the last year
thinking about the new South
Croydon Nursery Launch, our
Fireworks evening in November,
being soaked numerous times
at the Summer Fayre and many
enjoyable Parent Association
events. I have spoken proudly to
friends about our school sporting
successes and competing in
National finals for cricket and
swimming. I described in great
detail to my family, the wonder
of our 50 piece orchestra that
featured boys from 6 to 13
at years old at the summer
concert, my trip to Canterbury
Cathedral, where I attempted to
sing with our extraordinary choir
and of course the magical and
moving choir tour to Belgium,
that included singing at the
Menin gate. I also gloated to my
creative wife about our first true
Cumnor House art exhibition,
which featured work themed in
Sealife from the very youngest
of our children in nursery to
the very oldest Year 8 pupils.
@WEARECUMNOR
/WEARECUMNOR
A year that included the most
scholarship awards ever - for
Cumnor House graduates.
So many truly spectacular
achievements this year! Despite
all of these, quite simply amazing
accomplishments. I decided
the emphasis for this piece
should be the future and my
vision for what Cumnor House
will be moving forward.
‘Dare
to be
Different’
Cumnor House is a school with
an admirable reputation for
academics, sporting success
and musical ability. A school
fashioned on 87 years of tradition
and formulaic approaches to
education. This methodology and
pedagogy has served the school
well over the years. But having
spent the last year listening to
the feedback of parents, staff
and pupils, I believe, if we would
like to continue to hold our heads
higher than our competition and
remain outstanding, we must
not stand still, we must stand
out from the rest we must be
different. Our school must move
with the times and respond
to the world that has changed
around us during those 87 years.
WWW.CUMNORHOUSE.CO.UK 3
Education has changed,
standards have risen, the world
is smaller, there is an increased
use of technology and we can
observe different demands from
employers and universities.
Cumnor House must dare to
change, it must dare to be
different… Not different in way
that loses the age old values
of our DNA the Cumnor Way.
Not different in the aspirations
that we have for the pupils in
our care. Not different in the
excellent achievements of our
boys in academics, sports and
music. These will continue… But
different in the way our school
approaches its core business
of educating, nurturing, caring
and getting the best from our
boys. We often hear in the media
about well-being, independence,
resilience, and safeguarding
being the vital components of a
new world education. But these
only hold true if they are part of
everything we do as a school. In
my mind the only way we can do
this is by putting the boys first
and using them as the central
driver for the direction and vision
of our school. September 2018
is fast approaching and I have
been working closely with my
Leadership team, staff and the
Girls’ school working towards
these goals. My staff and I are
committed to working towards
the best possible outcomes
for your boys and this year our
focus for development has seen
us reflect on metacognition,
personalised learning and
research based educational
delivery. Learning should never
stop and a truly great school is
one that can generate a love for
learning from staff and students.
The timetable for September
2018 has been adjusted to focus
on boys’ development and
progressive learning needs, with
a balanced approach to lesson
timings and content. We have
reviewed and will be making
changes to our curriculum,
tailoring our content to boys
learning styles and interests.
With further focus on reading
to inspire writing and creativity.
This will be a curriculum that is
designed and planned with boys
in mind to enthuse and engage
them, with new challenges and
skills more suited to the 21st
century and preparation for life.
Our teachers have been tasked
with further personalising
learning to focus on mastery
and not on formulaic responses
to just ‘pass the test’. We will
seek true transferable skills that
support our boys to be creative,
progressive and shine in every
area of the curriculum. We will be
providing more opportunity for
boys to demonstrate their newly
acquired skills and achievements
through competition and
4
@WEARECUMNOR
/WEARECUMNOR
performance in further areas
of the curriculum. I will launch
a new robust approach to
monitoring, assessment
reporting and tracking that
supports form tutors in their
understanding of boys’ progress
and provides parents with the
clarity and guidance they need
to help children at home. We will
continue to work with parents
in open and honest discussion
about boys’ progress and
attainment and action support
and challenge for their next
steps to learning. Attainment
won’t be capped through age
range or setting, but instead
boys will be challenged to take
the next step in their learning
journey regardless of starting
point or current achievement.
One of the most important
elements to our success - will
be to continue to listen the
boys’ feedback and work with
them to continue to design
learning experiences that inspire
them. And we will achieve this
through an increase in form tutor
time, headmaster breakfasts,
continued school council
meetings, house meetings, and
our voice of the student survey.
Pupil voice really matters. In
my 16 years of education I
can guarantee two things:
1. Children will always surprise
you by what they can achieve.
So we should aim high!
&
2. Children will make the most
progress when they feel
happy, appreciated and safe
in their learning environment.
At Cumnor House this will be
our future, one where we as a
school community work together
as parents, staff, and students.
Message from
our Head Boy
My Cumnor journey has been a long one
(eleven years), but it has been filled with lifelong
memories. None of these memories would have
been created if Cumnor had not given me such
great opportunities, such as allowing me to travel
to Barbados on the cricket tour aged ten! This
was then followed by the two more amazing
cricket tours to South Africa and Dubai.
These years at Cumnor have enabled me to make
lots of established friendships. If you should know
one thing about Cumnor, it would be that you will
never be alone; whether it be your friends or the
teachers. You will always have someone by your
side, guiding you through your Cumnor journey.
The teachers at Cumnor always pushed and
stretched us in class but it is now clear to us all,
especially after completing our 13+ common entrance
examinations as to why they were challenging us.
Looking back on my journey, I realise that Cumnor
has done so much for me since nursery to the
present day. Cumnor has transformed me from a
little boy who never wanted to leave my parents,
into someone who has now got the confidence
to give speeches and talk openly in public. As
the Cumnor motto states, ‘Time Tells All’.
Thank you Cumnor for this unforgettable journey.
WORLD’S
MATHS
DAY
Wednesday 7th March 2018 was
World Maths Day, when adults
and children all around the
world are encouraged to solve
maths equations and puzzles
to improve their mathematical
skills. Cumnor’s Year 5
mathematicians celebrated
the event by playing live on
Mathletics to earn points
for their sets, with each set
ranked against other classes
worldwide.
Mr Vijay’s Year 5 maths set
came 49th in the U.K, which
was an excellent acheivement
and Cumnor House’s best ever
result. Notable contributions
came from Aditya Nair (ranked
4th in the U.K and 53rd in the
world individually) and Harshaa
Kumra (45th in the U.K).
Well done to everyone on an
excellent performance. This sets
a great target to beat in 2019!
Science
Week
The boys of year 5 and 6 participated in
an engineering task to construct a selfsupporting
tower using just balloons.
The task itself seemed simple enough
but the boys faced a number of key
challenges. To begin with, many found
it quite difficult to plan and delegate
duties collaboratively. In addition,
despite their natural competitive
nature, the budding engineers were
forced to stop and listen to each
other, especially when mishandled
balloons began popping. The task was
enjoyed by all and hopefully the boys
will learn to appreciate the need to
operate as a team not just in science
but also in everyday activities
Seussical
the Musical
After a very long week of rehearsals the boys were finally
ready to perform on stage. Thursday and Friday evening
proved to be spectacular! I would like to thank the cast, crew,
musicians and all involved in putting together this great show.
Special thanks go to Mr Sizer, our super talented Musical
Director as well as our Director, Roberta Zuric who rescued
us at a very late stage in rehearsals. I cannot imagine how
we would have been able to put on such an event without
the magical talents of Mr Turner. He not only managed the
crew but was responsible for the flashing feathers, and all
sorts of other weird and wonderful things. Mr Turner has
been slaving away in the DT room for many a late evening!
What makes our performances special has always been the live
music and the band were absolutely tremendous. Made up of
our very own boys a special mention to Kieran Parker and Katie
Osborne for joining them. Jamie Jones , Isa Khan, Omar Nesbeth-
George, Alex Sadottie, Joe Zaza and Olisa Aghadiuno played
to an excellent standard under Mr Sizer’s lead. Miss
Secker and Mrs Poole were not only part of the brilliant
band but also on hand for rehearsals and supported with all
aspects of the production including putting the set together!
As with any show it is important to mention some stand out
performances. Some of these boys have had only weeks to
memorise their scripts and learn their songs and I take my hat
off to them. Especially when we also have important exams
around the corner for many of them. It is a true testament to
the type of boy we have at Cumnor House where we see them
take ownership of their roles and are leading examples.
Fourth Plinth
Schools Award Ceremony
On Thursday 26th April I attended the Fourth
Plinth School Awards at City Hall with Kanishk
and his parents. When walking up to the
conference room on the second floor, I was
tremendously excited to see a gigantic version
of Kanishk’s artwork displayed on the wall!
From talking to colleagues, who have previously
been invited to the Awards Ceremony, I knew
that this meant something very special. As the
slope meandered up to the Conference Room,
we walked past a huge montage of the borough
winners. This year, the London Plinth Schools
Award received over 4500 entries and this
display revealed the best art for each individual
London Borough. On reaching the very top of the
slope, City Hall is the most fabulously designed
building, we reached Kanishk’s huge piece of
artwork! I was very proud to see that his name,
Cumnor House School, the name of his work
and the media used, had all been displayed.
Kanish’s work was actually called Black History
Art and was completed at school as part of our
cross-curricular Black History commemoration
in October. All Year 6 boys took part in the art
activity and much of their work was displayed
in the school hall. At the time we were focusing
upon portraits in Year 6, and the picture depicts
a woman’s face divided into two sections. Part
of the face is looking straight ahead and the
other part is in profile. We used oil pastels to
colour the designs; each boy putting his own
stamp on his work, working on details such
as what skin colour to select, how to display
the eyes and design adjoining lips. Kanishk’s
entry had a number of flourishing stokes over
each face and this was one of the features that
I really liked about his work. This is possibly
why I selected it as one of my entries.
The Fire of London
By Aarush
Raghavendra
Sunday 2nd September 1666
I woke up this morning and smoke
went up my nose. Then my maid Jane
told me all about the fire. A fire had
started in a baker’s in Pudding Lane.
I went out and saw the fire, but I
didn’t care, it was just a little one.
Monday 3rd September 1666
I woke up again and the fire was burning
and spreading. I went to the Tower
of London and had a closer look. I
was shocked! I saw people escaping
on boats carrying all their goods.
Tuesday 4th September 1666
I saw people pulling down houses.
I went to my house and buried my
Parmesan cheese and precious wine.
St. Paul’s Cathedral had caught on fire.
Wednesday 5th September 1666
I saw the fire burning more slowly
as the wind had died down.
Thursday 6th September 1666
Finally the fire was out. I was so
relieved! When I got to my house it
hadn’t burnt so I was thrilled.
on the new date. The boys were the last choir to
perform in the Infant Choirs (7 years and under)
class. They sat well and listened to two lovely
performances from other choirs and finally it was
their turn. They filed onto the stage, looking extra
smart in their blazers and a little nervous, but as
soon as they began singing the nerves disappeared
and they were able to enjoy themselves.
Their first song, ‘Sing of a Rainbow’ saw them
singing confidently in two parts and the adjudicator
commented on their very good ensemble singing
and energised sound. Their second song, ‘The
Rainbow Connection’ was a challenging song,
particularly as the piano part did not give them
any help! But they sang it very well and ‘with
enthusiasm’ (and even managed to get quiet at
the end despite a baby starting to scream!). They
then listened carefully to the adjudicator as she
talked about all three choirs, and were delighted
to learn that they had been awarded Distinction,
with a mark of 87 out of 100. Well done boys!
Competition
Congratulations to all the instrumentalists that
reached the final of the House Music. It was an
excellent competition this year with almost 300
performances. From one boy who has never
received music lessons to Gold Class finalists
of grade 8 standard, everyone involved
performed very well.
Our guest adjudicator Mr Gerard Holden, Head
of Music from The Cedars School commented:
“I was impressed with the standard of music at Cumnor
House. Some of the gold and silver finalist’s performances
were truly inspirational; a real testament to the excellent
running of the school and teaching staff, two of whom, we
share. Mr Sizer has clearly helped to create a wonderful
nurturing environment and the results were on display in
abundance. It is reassuring to know that The Cedars is an
option for your boys and I sincerely hope we stay in touch.”
Well Done!
English Schools Finals
We travelled up to Sheffield
for the English Schools Finals
with high hopes having
qualified fastest of all the
London Schools in our regional
qualifiers. The Boys didn’t
disappoint and all swam
fantastically well to finish in
2nd place in the Freestyle Final
and in 6th place in the Medley
relay. Well done to Ethan
Spoerer-Scott, Noah Dominguez-
Tchetche, Alexander Sadotti,
Krish Idnani and Shivendra
Prashad who all played their part
in finishing runners up in the
National swimming Finals. A great
achievement. Well done.
London School’s Finals
We had a very successful eveing
at the London Schools Finals
We had some great individual
performances and finished with
3 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 other top
6 places. These results meant
that we finished as the 2nd top
School in the overall standings. A
special mention to Ethan
Spoerer-Scott who won both
the Backstroke and Butterfly
finals and to Noah Dominguez-
Tchetche who won the Freestyle
final. All three of these events
were won in new record times.
London League
We finished third in the London
League final which is our highest
ever placing. This competition
is a very tough format with
a team of over 30 swimmers
needed. We now have far more
depth within our swimming team
which really shone through on
the night. A special mention
to the Year 4 A team who were
particularly impressive.
Croydon Schools
We were once again very
dominant at the Croydon Schools
Finals. We won 6 events. William
Letchford won the Year 4
Backstroke, Jeremiah Carnegie
won the Year 4 Breaststroke,
Laurence Qin won the Year 5
Backstroke, Rhys Waltham won
the year 5 Breaststroke and we
also won both the open Freestyle
and Medley relays. Their were
second place finishes for Thevan
Iyavoo, Zachary Bush, Finn
Allinson, Ethan Spoerer-Scott
and Noah Dominguez-Tchetche.
Such was our dominance that
we won top school for the 9th
consecutive year and scored
more than double the points
of the next placed School.
U10 Rugby
Despite having most of the rugby season
interrupted by poor weather, the U11 A
rugby side showed great promise. We
started the season brightly with a 45-20
victory over a strong KCS side. Ethan Brown
made a number of exceptional line breaks
with Nicholas Lee demonstrating excellent
technique and determination in the tackle.
The teams best performances came in the
Surrey Championships beating the Mall
school and an exceptionally tough Rokeby
side, a team we lost to earlier in the year.
There was clear evidence of development
in our play and it was excellent to see four
new players in the A team since last season.
Luke Henstock-Smith led the team with
great pride and passion, while standout
players such as Zak Mirza, Ethan Brown and
Nicholas Lee displayed a new tactical side to
their game. Arrun Muriss and Jasper Brown
were once again strong at the breakdown
and with go-forward ball; I am sure both
will have a bright future in the game.
During the Spring term Year 5
Cumnor Boys made the short journey
to the Girls School for a game of
touch rugby versus Year 5 Girls.
It was great to see the girls and
boys enjoying their rugby together
and compete in what was the
girls’ first ever match! It was a
close encounter but the boys left
victorious. The superb afternoon
U9 Football
The U9 coaches spent the early stages of the
season teaching the boys the key skills to
transition from 6-a-side to 7-a-side football.
The boys were taught about different formations,
and the vital roles for each position, as well
continuing to develop their individual ball skills.
The U9 circuit was extremely competitive this
season, meaning 57 goals and 12 wins as a year
group was very impressive. Well done to all boys
Tournament
The Hawthorns Football Festival brought the
first set of fixtures for the U9’s this season. After
only 1 Games session is was difficult to find time
to work on any team shape or tactics, therefore
ensuring that was improved as the day went on
was our main focus. After a slow start against
Hawthorns, we did begin to improve. We passed
the ball with more quality, but importantly, we
started to do things quickly. Our opponents
found this difficult to deal with, meaning that
we would go on and win out 6 team group. Both
Humzah and Aston were excellent in defence,
listening to instructions about how to shape
up extremely well, and Tega was a constant
threat up front, scoring some superb goals. We
ended up losing the final by the way of Golden
Goal in extra time, seconds after missing a
great chance ourselves. However, the boys
took the defeat like honourable young men,
and more importantly did improve as the day
went on, which bodes well for the season.
U10 Barcelona Football Tour
During the October half term break 23 pupils
from Year 5 and 3 members of staff set off
for a 5 night football tour of Barcelona with
sun, sand and soccer awaiting them.
After an early 9am flight from Gatwick Airport
the tour began with a magical experience
for all pupils and teachers present on tour.
We visited the Espanyol FC Stadium to watch
Espanyol draw 0-0 with Larente, the atmosphere
was spectacular throughout the match.
This year, we were invited to play against Athletic
Del Valles in rural Barcelona, boasting some
amazing views of the quieter side of the city. All
teams performed very well with the A and B teams
earning well deserved victories and the C team
narrowly losing out. However, the boys all won their
penalty shoot-outs, with Leo scoring an especially
impressive strike. Training sessions at FC Espanyol
and a visit to the glorious sandy beach followed.
We played our final fixture against another local
Spanish club, Club Futbol Parets. All games were
highly entertaining and on the whole, strongly
contested. The Cumnor teams were on the wrong
end of the scorelines, nonetheless, many football
lessons were learnt on the day. Despite the results
being fairly one sided, the experience of playing
in the heart of Barcelona, a city that thrives on
the passion of football, was unforgettable.
Other activities included a visit to the Nou Camp
Stadium, the home of FC Barcelona, sightseeing
around Barcelona city centre, a Mr Brotherton
win at bowling and swimming in the beautiful
Balearic sea and hotel pool. The entire group
represented Cumnor House fantastically well
displaying exemplary behaviour and application
throughout the entirety of the tour. A big thank
you must also go to Mr Brotherton and Mr Dwyer
for all their support while on tour. Finally, a
special mention goes out to Daniel Parris, the
Barcelona point’s winner, an award given to the
tourist of the week. Ishan’s behaviour, application
to the tour and maturity levels throughout
the week, deservedly earned him the prize.
Well done boys!
U13 Football
The U13s represented the school extremely well
this season, in what is a greatly competitive
circuit of fixtures. There was a number of boys
who progressed and moved up teams throughout
the season. Umar Chaudary in particular, who
moved from the U13D team to play a major role in
defence for the U13A team. The coaches worked
tirelessly with their teams, educating the boys
about both 11-a-side and 9-a-side football, a
major change from the 7-a-side football most of
the boys were used to playing. The boys learnt
about the offside rule, as well as different
footballing tactics required for football on much
larger pitches. They scored 66 goals as a year
group and won an impressive 11 matches.
Surrey Cup Run
The 1st XI boasted a wealth of youth in the 2017
season with the majority of the starting line-up
representing the school for most fixtures consisting
of Year 7 boys. Therefore, in the early stages
of pre season much of the coaching time was
dedicated to developing the boy’s 11-a-side football
understanding. The story of the Surrey Cup this
year was unfortunately a trend of English football,
missed penalties. We lost both knockout matches
on penalties, finally being knocked out at the ¼ final
stage. The team were a joy to coach and pleasingly
our captain, Didier Gore, earnt a place in the London
ISFA team. Reggie Rose, another Year 8 pupil, also
continues to play for Crystal Palace. His experience
and knowledge of the game was inspirational for a
number of our younger players this year.
Cricket
A staggering 154 Cricket fixtures shared between
32 different teams, has seen a total of 22,758 runs
scored by the Cumnor boys this Summer!
We have seen the U8 boys compete in their first
competitive cricket fixtures for the school and the
U9 boys have continued to impress in their pairs’
cricket matches. A squad of 12 talented U8/9 boys
finished the Summer by taking on an U9 Surrey
Development side which proved to be hugely
beneficial and it has been great to see our younger
boys adapt to hard ball cricket with ease. The
U10ABCD teams have been strong across the board
and have shared 28 victories in 38 games played.
The U10A side were unlucky not to win the Reigate
Grammar School 6 A-Side Tournament and various
other tournaments over the Summer.
Cricket has flourished once again in the Upper
School, with National success at both U11 and U13
level. Although both sides did not go onto win
the National Cup, all boys should be massively
proud of their efforts in qualifying for such
events. Cricket remains a strong success at
the school and currently 17 different boys are
involved in the Surrey Cricket County set up. The
school term ended with the U13A side winning
the Surrey Cup for a third successive year!
U11A Cricket
The U11 A team have enjoyed a highly
successful season with great team and
individual accomplishments. The side played
a remarkable 26 matches including the shorter
versions of the game (6 aside and 8 aside).
The A team, which used a total of 17 different
players throughout the course of the season
involving pupils from Year 4 to Year 6, began
brightly beating King’s College School,
Shrewsbury House School and Hall Grove in
20/20 cricket. These results were then backed up
with a superb performance at the Tonbridge 6’s
tournament, which included the top 24 schools
from Kent and Surrey. Cumnor won the group
winning all four matches as Kanishk Srivastava
achieved a personal milestone of taking a superb
hat trick. In the Semi-Final, Cumnor’s quality with
the ball was too much for the opposition and a
cool head with the bat from Kanishk Srivastava
and Max Wallis secured a four run victory.
Cumnor faced a strong Cranmore side in the final,
posting a par score of 52 for two. Although we
put Cranmore under great pressure with the ball
and in the field, unfortunately, Cranmore were
able to get our total with five balls remaining.
Undoubtedly, our strongest performance of the
year was in the U11 Saracens Hard Ball 8 Aside
National Cup. In the local round, we swept aside
St Peters and Elmhurst to face Rokeby in the
Quarterfinal. A good team performance with
the bat saw Cumnor make 112 for one off 72
balls beating Rokeby by 43 runs. This resulted in
Cumnor advancing to the Regional Semi-Finals
with the hope of qualifying to the National
Finals later in the term; we certainly did not
disappoint. Facing the best Surrey had to offer,
Cumnor were resilient and played with good
game sense. After a nervous wait to compare
net run rate, Cumnor were victorious over
Cranmore, KCS and Trinity to represent South
East England at the Nationals in Leicester.
The Finals day saw the best eight U11 sides
from across the country competing in 30 degree
heat. We unfortunately lost our opening two
games, one of which, on the last ball. We then
showed a positive response by winning our
final group game comprehensively. Despite
losing our final match of the day and finishing
6th overall, all boys can be proud of their
fantastic achievement. Well done to Max Wallis
and Zak Mirza who showed great leadership
throughout the season. I wish all the boys the
very best for their senior cricket next year.
Tennis
Cumnor House once again competed in the
Year 7/8 Aegon Team Tennis School Competition
this year.
The first fixture was against Ewell Castle. All the
matches were close, with wins in the singles by
Moses Isahuyi and Reyhan Borde-Kuofie. The
doubles were close as well, with Cumnor House
coming out on top in both.
From there our next fixture was against the might
of Wilson’s School, who fielded an extremely
strong team of experienced juniors. It was an
eye-opening afternoon for our boys, as we lost
all matches convincingly. The boys walked away
from that match with a desire to improve, and
this showed in our next fixture against Hinchley
Wood School.
Hinchley Wood again had a squad full of
experienced club tennis players, but this time all
of the matches were close with Cumnor House
coming out on top in two of them, and Hinchley
Wood winning four.
The date of our last fixture clashed with a
Surrey Cup Cricket match, providing opportunities
for boys in the lower school to demonstrate their
skills. Finn Allinson from Year 5 played exciting
tennis in a tight loss to a boy three years his
senior, whilst Oliver Springett battled manfully
in his first ever tennis match. It finished with
five losses and a third win of the season by
Moses Isahuyi.
This year the team have played with an
enthusiasm and maturity beyond their limited
tennis experience, and laid a foundation for the
continued growth of tennis at Cumnor House.
