Summer Sun & Summer Fun
A wonderful turnout for this year’s Gala, there’s so much to report we’ve
added a whole extra section to cover the fun and games. None of
it could have happened without the help and support of lots of
volunteers – we take our hats off to you – a great result!
Don’t forget if you have ideas for ways to make the Gala
even better next year get in touch with the committee –
planning for 2019 will be underway before you know it.
We’d also like to hear your ideas on what’ you’d like to see
in this magazine. We’re proud of the balance of adverts –
no more than 50% is advertising and also grateful to our
advertisers & sponsors without whom this magazine would
not exist. So please if you call someone from an ad please let them
know you saw them in the Ellington Express.
We have already had 2 mini heatwaves, so I expect that we can assume that Summer is finally
here, hurray! The Winter has been long and hard and the Spring cold and wet so we are all much
looking forward to some sun and warmth to cheer us up. Have you ever thought about coming
along to a WI meeting it is a good way to meet people and make friends, particularly if you are
new to the village. We hold our meetings in the village hall on the first Tuesday of the
month at 7.30pm and you would be most welcome.
In May we had our resolutions meeting
when we discussed the resolution that
this year will be taken to the NFWI
AGM in Cardiff next month and it was
entitled “ Should Mental Health have
Parity with Physical Health.” It is a very
worthwhile resolution and we all voted
unanimously in favour of it. Afterwards
Mike Baker gave us a very interesting
talk about The Duke of Edinburgh Award
scheme which many of our children have
taken part in whilst at school.
On July 4th the WI are running a coach to Hunstanton for the day. We have also invited family,
friends and other villagers to come along and enjoy a day at the seaside with us.
On August 7th there has been a change of plan and we are now going to have our meeting in
the village hall at 7.30pm. As yet the agenda for the evening is unconfirmed but will be sent to
members via email in due course.
So, come along and see for yourself, nothing ventured, nothing gained we will make you very
welcome.
The Seasons of Life
Sometimes it seems like we are having one trouble after another and there is no end in sight but life,
like nature, runs in seasons.
We have happy and successful
seasons but we also have less
happy and often very difficult
ones, like all seasons though
they come and go.
I saw a quote on social media
recently which went something
like this: “On particularly rough
days when I’m sure I can’t
possibly endure, I like to remind
myself that my track record for
getting through bad days so far is
100% and that’s pretty good!”
We have all survived our
previous rough days (and weeks)
and we will likely survive the
ones we have now and in the
future too.
I’d like t
My bel
There’s nothing to be gained
by trying to fight the season
we find ourselves in. Jesus told
his followers they would have
“trouble in this world” but he
also assured them that in him
“they would overcome” those
troubles.
I’m no expert on these matters
but the more I think about it,
the more it seems all we can
do is accept what comes when
it
comes. This is not fatalism though, it’s not resigning ourselves to everything that comes our way and
shrugging our shoulders; rather it is acknowledging that we can’t change what is happening and that
the best course of action is to accept it, good or bad, and live as best we can through it. Perhaps we
can even learn to find good in situations that look bad at first glance — with hindsight there’s almost
always something good in even the worst of happenings.
As I write this article it’s lovely and sunny and the flowers in the garden are starting to come out. It
looks as though the worst of the winter is behind us now and we can look forward to spring/summer.
It will be cold and wet again one day but I’m going to try and enjoy the weather we have now without
worrying about that.
My beloved spoke and said to me,
“Arise, my darling,
Gala Special
With so much happening in the run up and over the Gala weekend we’ve dedicated the
next 8 pages to it.
The most welcome guest was the
fabulous weather!
Jason did a great job as ever
opening the Gala and judging the
Dogs (& one Tortoise!) in the Pet
Show.
Dave the Dog led a very
entertaining Dog Agility.
Spaldwick School entertained us
with their singing and led a very
enjoyable maypole dance.
Magic Dave kept the children
entertained while parents could
enjoy the Bar, Barbeque and
stalls.
A wide range of traditional
& stalls including Tombola,
Defi brillator awareness, Water
& Wine, Cakes, Target Golf,
Coconut Shy, Candy Floss &
Bat the Rat.
Sam Malt did a great display
of village memorabilia.
The Classic Cars had their
own special area with special
chequered fl ag bunting.
Gala Day - Evening
The evening kicked off with
Eclipse, a band we have
had previously in a different
formation as Maid of Ale &
Vertigo. They played three
full sets which meant we didn’t
have space for a Disco.
A very successful raffl e added to Gala funds signifi cantly.
After limited initial interest it was great to see that Ellington really has “Got Talent” Well
done to all the participants and thank you for entertaining us all.
Top Gun Shoot
A good turnout of Top Gunners competed
at High Harthay for the coveted title of Top
Gun. David Adams won the Professional
category with Dave Porter as runner up. In
the Amateur category Graham Crouch won
with Richard Sykes in second place. Thanks
to Steve Edwards for organising.
Car Treasure Hunt
With a few changes to last year – a new end
location at the Mermaid and a start outside
the village, fifteen teams entered the Car
Treasure Hunt. As well as a drive around
the local area looking for clues, the hunt
had a walking section in Houghton at the
start. Everyone returned unscathed and
with one or two noticeable exceptions (you
know who you were!) were still talking to
each other.
The results were very close and this year
the top three were equal on points and
separated only by two tiebreak questions.
The scores were very high so clearly next
year needs to be a bit more difficult. The
results were as follows:
1st - “Lumbers-Staton” team on- 98
points.
2nd - “Off-roaders Reunited” also on- 98
points (second out on tiebreak)
3rd - “7 Up at the Gables” also on- 98 points
(first out on tiebreak)
4th & Family winners (ie with kids in the
car!) “Late Langs” on- 97 points.
Tim & Janette from “Off-roaders Reunited”
have kindly agreed to organise next years
Treasure Hunt. We think we will retain the
start outside the village – who knows where
we will go in 2019…!
The Gala officially ended on Sunday evening with a Gala praise service in the church which
gave everyone another opportunity to admire the Flower Festival on the theme “Memorable
Great to have some new “florists” and we were thrilled that a number of people are interested
for next year. What shall we do in 2019? A year, countries, shows, songs, hymns, Saints,
holidays?
Did the weekend inspire you to get involved?
There are lots of ways that you can get involved with the Gala. We have a small committee and
Great Staughton Ward Report
May 2018 – Darren Tysoe
3rd May Elections
All 52 seats across Huntingdonshire were contested. Great Staughton is a new Ward made up of 5
parishes: Great Staughton, Hail Weston, Perry, Grafham and Ellington. Previously these 5 villages
were in 3 different Council Wards. The changes were brought about as a result of Boundary
Commission recommendations.
The turnout in local elections is generally lower than for a General Election, but Great Staughton
Ward had the highest turnout of all 52 Wards, at 45%. Good to see turnout out in such high
numbers. The lowest turnout across the District was 24% and the average was around 33%.
Ellington had the highest turnout at 51%.
The elections resulted in some changes to the political composition of the District Council, the
Conservative Group maintains control of the Council with a majority of 8.
Contact
I will maintain regular contact with all 5 parishes by attending Parish Councils, local events,
and holding surgeries. I am also contactable on Facebook, twitter email, and telephone. Living
locally, in the Ward, I can always visit too. I will use the village newsletters and Facebook to
inform residents of what I am doing and make sure I spend some time each month in each Ward.
I look forward to being your District Council representative and doing whatever I can to support
you with local council issues.
Since the election, the Council has held its Annual General Meeting, where I was appointed as
one of the 6 Executive Councillors who form the Cabinet, which includes the Leader and Deputy
Leader, and 4 Cabinet Members. My portfolio is ‘Digital and Customer’.
A14/A1 Road Closures
In Ellington, the A14/A1 road closures have resulted in increased traffic through the village,
including HGVs, which may be over the 18-tonne weight limit if they loaded. Together with many
residents, I contacted Highways England to alert them to HGVs ignoring the official diversion and
asked the Police to enforce the weight limits. Some signage has improved, though the diversions
are still ambiguous in places, leaving drivers confused or they are ignoring the official diversion
routes. I will continue to monitor the situation, though some disruption is inevitable given our
proximity to the A14 and A1 road schemes.
